1967 Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Replay
Last two fights for Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 1967.
No new fighters to post here but wanted to keep ya updated on my fights. 01/17/67 Tuesday Houston, TX, USA Zora Folley – HW (73-7-4) vs. Floyd Joyner – HW (19-11-3) In about 2 months, veteran heavyweight Zora Folley would be climbing into the ring against Ali to fight for the first and only time in his career for the world heavyweight title (WBA). This fight was probably obviously a tune up for Folley with an opponent with some modest boxing experience and ability to him but who would most likely not jeopardize Folley’s meeting with Ali in March. (Can any of you boxing historian confirm my assumption here? Was the Folley/Ali fight even planned yet when Folley fought Joyner?) This fight in 1967 lasted only 1 minute and 40 seconds as Joyner was KO’d by Folley in the 1st round. Our replay lasted longer. I scheduled this as a 10 round bout. Joyner made a real fight of it for the first 4 rounds, giving Folley more then what he bargained for. The first round, both fighters spend the first couple minutes feeling each other out. Folley most likely was being careful not to take any quick, rash mistakes. Then at about the 2-1/2 minute mark, Folley lands a hard shot that stuns Joyner as the round end. Joyner though regroups and comes out in the 2nd round and turns it on. It’s an exciting round with both fighters landing punches. Two judges score the round for Joyner. Round 3 was more good action with Folley landing a volley of shots early but then Joyner fights his way back landing a couple good uppercuts. With a ½ minute to go in the round things look pretty even, but then Folley fires a rapid, solid combination that scores and then quickly lands a hook and a couple jabs to Joyner’s body to slow Joyner up. Folley manages to take the round. Three great rounds of boxing with Folley getting more then what he bargained for. Things then slow up quite a bit in the 4th round. Both fighters seem unwilling to carry the action. The round ends in a dull fashion draw. Through 4 rounds though Joyner has a chance at pulling an upset. The first 2-1/2 minutes of the 5th round are again more of the 4th with neither fighter really pressing the action, though Folley manages to land enough punches to be ahead in points. Then quickly, Folley lands another crushing combination that leaves Joyner dazed. At the end both fighters throw a series of punches with neither connecting much with them. Folley though starts to pull away some with this fight in this round. Round 6, Folley again does just enough to keep the judges in his corner with Joyner beginning to look spent in this fight and becoming ineffectual with his punches. A minute into the 7th round, Folley lands a thudding shot up into Joyner’s ribcage and Joyner crumbles to the canvas. He barely beats the count, getting up at the 9th count. For the next minute and 15, Joyner hangs in there exchanging punches with Folley but Folley is obviously getting the better of it. Then at the 2:32 mark, Joyner goes down for a 2nd time with another tremendous shot to Joyner’s body. This time he gets up in 8, but Joyner is clearly spent in this fight. Folley quickly moves in and then lands another hard shot to Joyner’s ribcage. He can’t withstand the force of the shot and Joyner drops to both knees. The referee starts the count and he’s counted out in 10 right at the 2:59 mark of the 7th round! KO victory for Zora Folley! 01/17/67 Tuesday Portland, Maine, USA Willie Ray Richardson – HW (18-5-0) vs. Tony Burwell – HW (0-4-0) Richardson is coming into this fight having won his last bout on January 5th of this year defeating Gene Stewart by a 2nd round TKO here in Portland. Burwell meanwhile is climbing back into the ring 1 day after having lost an 8 round split decision to Jose (King) Roman on Monday in Worcester! Incredible that he’s coming right back to fight again within 24 hours! In this fight, Richardson comes out the winner by an 8th round TKO. In our 10 round scheduled replay, we didn’t end up needing the 10 rounds. Richardson comes out early about ½ minute in landing a right cross and then shortly after lands a good jab. The fighters circle each other for a few seconds then Burwell manages to get a jab in and then scores with a quick hook to the head of Richardson after Willie Ray had missed with a wild shot of his own. Richardson is now missing with his shots. At the 2 minute mark, Burwell glances a hook off Richardson’s side . Richardson misses with a cross and the two continue to move around each other. Burwell then backs into a neutral corner. Then all of a sudden Willie Ray connects with a strong cross and just like that Burwell is down!! He doesn’t make it up. Winner by KO at the 2:48 mark in the first round, Willie Ray Richardson! |

Van Dorsey
Here is the first rating for the heavyweight stiffs that I posted pictures for yesterday. This is a guy that kissed the canvas repeatedly, not too tough to rate. I thought it would add a little to my game to have some tomato cans from real life conplete with photos.
Van Dorsey Hometown - Hartford, CT 0-6-0 Van's career consisted of six first round stoppages; three by knockout, two by TKO and one by way of disqualification. CONN

JESUS ROHENA HW Stiff
JESUS ROHENA (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Hartford, CT 1(0)-10-0 Rohena served as a punching bag exclusively in Massachusetts. He was stopped within 1.5 rounds on average with the lone exception being a four round decision over the equaly unimpressive Phil Prince.

Jerry Arentzen
JERRY ARENTZEN (photo in other thread)
Hometown - Trenton, NJ 2(1)-18-0-1 Arentzen went 2-7-1 from 1991 to 1993 before calling it quits. Then, he tried to recreate the magic in 1999 with a comeback. After a string of eleven losses, the Pennsylvania Commission retired him. If only they would do the same with fighters that no longer have talent that they do with those who never had any.

Shawn Bryant
SHAWN BRYANT (photo in other thread)
Springfield, MA 0-1-0 With only one round of pro boxing under his belt, Bryant decided that seeking other gainful employment was the right thing to do.
