Other Cardinals
I guess rather than post photos that we already have elsewhere, I should point out that many of the Cardinals of the 40s have already been posted by Tnfoto and others in the following thread:
http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...lineups-2.html There are some nice color shots of Joe Garagiola, Max Lanier, and others. I apologize for any waste of web space this may have caused. |

Next batch of 1940s Cardinals
Freddy Martin - relief pitcher with the Cardinals in 1946 and 1949-50 - Martin was 30 when he made it to the Cardinals in 1946 after serving in the military during WWII - he signed to play in the Mexican League in 1947 (like Max Lanier) and was banned from the Major Leagues until the ban was lifted in 1949 - he went on to become a legendary minor league coach & instructor, teaching the split-finger fastball and tutoring the famous reliever Bruce Sutter.
Danny Litwhiler - leftfielder for the Cardinals in 1943-44, military service in 1945, returned to the Cardinals briefly in 1946 before being traded to the Braves. Ray Sanders - 1B for the Cardinals 1942-45 before being sold to the Braves for 1946 where he joined his old manager, Billy Southworth. Lou Klein - 2B-SS for the Cardinals in 1943, military service in 1944 and much of 1945, returned to the Cardinals for 1945-46, like Freddy Martin and Max Lanier, signed with the Mexican League for 1947 and was in turn banned from the major leagues. Returned to the Cardinals briefly in 1949 when the ban was lifted. Bud Byerly - pitcher for the Cardinals 1943-45 |
