Yeah Im not sure how I missed that or how it happened. But it seems to have worked out for the Cubs as they won a lopsided game anyway.

1911 Philadelphia Athletics vs 2008 Philadelphia Phillies

Who was the best team in Philly?
2008 Philadelphia Phillies
Record: 92-70
Finish: Won World Series over Tampa Bay
Manager: Charlie Manual
Team ERA: .388
Team AVG: .255
Home Runs: 214
Key Players: Ryan Howard 1B (48 HR, 146 RBI), Jimmy Rollins (11 HR, 47 SB), Brad Lidge (41 S, 1.95 ERA)

A young team the Phillies rode the wave on momentum and took the title in 08. The numbers in a competition like this are not great as the ERA is close to 4 and the team strike out rate is alarming (1117 Ks). Cole Hamels and Jamie Moyer will have their work cut out for them, but the Phils are a gutsy team that should compete well.

1911 Philadelphia Athletics
Record: 101-50
Finish: Won World Series over NY Giants
Manager: Connie Mack
Team ERA: 3.01
Team AVG: .296
Home Runs: 35
Key Players: Home Run Baker (.334, 115 RBI), Eddie Collins 2B (.365, 38 SB), Jack Coombs (28-12, 3.53)

Connie Mack led this hard nosed team to the title with a team average close to .300 and a team full of speed. Mack preached team play over individual stardom and has his starters long the big innings as was the norm in the era,

Pitching matchups
Game 1: Cole Hamels (14-10, 3.09 ERA) vs Jack Coombs (28-12, 3.53)
Game 2: Jamie Moyer (16-7, 3.71) vs Eddie Plank (23-8, 2.10)
Game 3: Brett Myers (10-13, 4.55) vs Cy Morgan (15-7, 2.70)

PHILLIES EDGE A's IN OPENER

In the opening game of the battle of Philadelphia its the Phillies team of the modern era that win the first fight. Ryan Howard slammed a 430 foot home run in the to tie the game and then the Phils extended their lead in the 7th inning by scoring three.

Cole Hamels kept his poise and tired late by leaving the game very tight after the A's cut the lead with 2 in the 8th after a running triple by Amos Strunk. Then it came down to Brad Lidge who looked very sharp in the last frame striking out Eddie Collins to end a good ball game.

Athletics look to rebound in game 2

ATHLETICS PICK THEMSELVES UP

Both starting pitchers went the distance in this one, another tight one, and the Athletics prevail in another tight one to tie the series.

Teams exchanged 2 run innings in the 3rd inning. Pat Burrell hit a solo home run off Eddie Plank to give the Phillies the slim lead going into the late innings. Left Fielder Bris Lord drove in a two run single that turned the tide of the match again and gave the lead back to the visitors; Lord went 2 for 2 on the day. Pitcher Plank then gave himself valuable insurance by driving home a 5th run with a hit.

Plank stayed on the mound to close it out himself for the win, as it really looks like we have a fine series on our hands.

PAT BURRELL HOMER DIFFRENCE BEHIND MYERS

In a very well played game at Shibe Park where defense and pitching were on display, one swing of the bat was the diffrence in the end.

Pat Burrell hit his second home run of the series going deep 2nd inning with a man on. Burrell ended up going 3 for 4 and making the ultimate diffrence. The rest of the story was the effort of Pihillie closer Brad Lidge who came on in relief for a tired Brett Myers after six. A fresh Lidge went 3 innings and held back the Athletics who just couldnt get it going or score on their home field.

It is said that game 3 is the crucial one in a best of 5 series, and indeed now the Phils are in the drivers seat with a chance to close things out. The Athletics look to regroup and really wasted a good pitching effort from Cy Morgan who made just one crucial mistake early.

Question: Are you playing with the neutralized database? I haven't used it much but others have mentioned that playing with the default database tends to favor the modern teams.

I am playing with a nuetralized database with editing based on stats if need be. I do my best to make the starters of each team as accurate as possible. I use webhelp from baseball prospectus and baseball refrence.

Results seem pretty good thus far.

ATHLETICS FORCE A GAME 5

With their backs against the wall the 1911 Athletics wasted no time evening up the series with an 8-6 victory over the 08 Phillies. The A's scored 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off their opponents the rest of the way.

Joe Blanton the Phillies starter was lit up like a Christmas tree in the first inning but did survive the frame and settled down to pitch an eventual 6 innings. Home Run Baker and Jack Berry each had two run doubles as the A's managed 6 hits in the big inning.

Down 7-1 in the 7th, Jimmy Rollins took Chief Bender long for a two run shot to narrow the gap.

Harry Krause came on to close things out but ran into a rough 9th inning of his own. Jayson Werth hit a three run home run in the ninth to cut the lead to two runs befoer the reliever could close the door.

So now the series between two world champions from diffrent eras moves to a final and critical decisive game.

PHILLIES MOVE ON

The 2008 Phillies thrilled their home fans with a Game 5 victory over Connie Mack and his championship team of 1911 to win the series and advance.

The Phillies behind lefty Cole Hamels pulled out the win by a 5-1 margin in what had began as a duel pitching matchup. Athletics ace Jack Coombs matched Hamels pitch for pitch as both teams battled into the 5th inning scoreless.

Pedro Feliz and Shane Victorino drove in runs with singles and Hamels had the cushion he needed. Ryan Howard hit his second long ball of the series off Coombs in the 8th inning with a man on basically seal the game and put the Phils up by 5.

Hamels went the distance allowing only one run and striking out 11 A's batters. The win is the second by a Phillies franchise, matching the 1993 team that won in 5 as well.

1970 CINCINNATI REDS vs 1969 NEW YORK METS

1970 CINCINNATI REDS
Record: 102-60
Finish: Won NL Pennant; Lost to Orioles in World Series
Manager: Sparky Anderson
Team ERA: 3.69
Team AVG: .270
Home Runs: 191
Key Players: Johnny Bench C (45 HR 148 RBI), Pete Rose RF (15 HR, .316) Gary Nolan P (18-7, 3.27)

This Reds team that won 102 games deep with talent can compete with anyone. This team was the beginning of a dynasty and has legends like Johnny Bench and Pete Rose in the lineup. Their ability to create runs and close to 200 home runs speak for themselves. Pitching will be the key for them.

1969 NEW YORK METS
Record: 100-62
Finish: Won World Series over Baltimore

Team AVG: .242
Home Runs: 109
Key Players: Tom Seaver P (25-7, 2.21), Clean Jones (.340, 75 RBI), Tommie Age OF (26 HR, 12 SB)

The Amazings are a fan favorite of many. Tom Seaver had one of the best season's a starter can possibly have winning 25 games, he anchors a pitching staff that is the strength of this team. The Mets effort in 1969 may have been one of the greatest team effort in MLB history.

METS HANDLE REDS IN GAME 1

The Mets of 69 scored the first victory of this five game series thanks to a 5 run 5th inning and a good enough performance from their ace Tom Seaver.

Third baseman Wayne Garrett banged a three run home run in the big fifth inning as Gary Nolan wasnt helped by his defens in the inning and couldnt get out of the jam.

Cleon Jones had added a long solo shot an inning before as the Mets got on the board first.

Seaver had the strikeouts working for him, fanning 12 Reds along the way and going the distance throwing 112 pitches.

SHEA ROCKS; METS UP TWO GAMES
The 1969 Mets got the support they needed from a capacity crowd at Shea Stadium as they take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series against the Reds and are now thinking sweep as the series goes back to the Queen City.

Jerry Koosman endured a 45 minute rain delay to earn a win and match Tom Seaver who won game 1 by striking out 12 Reds.

Tony Perez drove in two runs in the first inning and it looked like the Reds could be in control in game 2, but it was not to be. The Mets scored runs from the 5th inning on and mostly with small ball. Jim Merrit looked good early for the Reds but couldnt get out of the late innings.

Frustration could be seen on the leaders of the Reds team, a team that is still young and full of talent, but a team that may not have learned how to win yet.

REDS WIN; ROSE CONFIDENT

The Reds bounced back on their feet in Game 3 of the series beating the miracle Mets 6-3; the Reds had no intention of ending the series after only three games.

With the game tied at 1, Johnny Bench and Lee May hit home runs in the 3rd inning to give the home side the lead they wouldnt give up again.

Jim McGlothlin didnt have the greatest of games but did leave with the lead in hand in the middle of the 5th. He needed help from his bullpen and got it the rest of the way, Don Gullit and Milt Wilcox pitched shutout baseball until the finally closed the door in the 9th.

"We are still the favorites in this series." said Pete Rose after the win, "I feel we are the better team and will show it the rest of the way. This win is only getting us started. Rose went 1-3 and drove in a run.

REDS WHALLOP METS; FORCE GAME 5
As many expected, this series of two world series champions will be coming down to one final game as the series is tied after 4 games, with the home side winning each time.

Game 4 wasnt even close, as Pete Rose predicted the Reds took the game with ease punishing Mets starter Don Cardwell and winning by a final of 11-2.

10 runs in the course of two innings out the Reds in the drivers seat and Walt Simpson stepped up big as his side needed him putting together a very good start for the win. Sparky Anderson showed confidence in the young right hander, and he came through with the win. The big innings by the Reds gave him added confidence.

So all eyes and roads lead to Shea and game 5. The tension will be great but the entertainment even greater.

SEAVER AND MIRACLES MOVE ON

In what turned out to be a great series Tom Seaver and Jim Merrit put it all on the line n Game 5 at Shea Stadium.

Both ace pitchers did their job in a duel that went into the 5th inning scoreless on both sides. With every pitch the tension built and the fans grew in great voice.

In the 5th the Reds loaded the bases with two out against Tom Terrific. Second baseman Tommie Helmes singled to left whereCleon Jones collected the ball, Billy Tolan scored easily but Bernie Carbo tried to make it two and challanged the throw. Jerry Grote blocked the plate and Carbo was out on the slide to end the inning.

In the bottom of the frame it was the home teams turn to put Merrit under pressure. Ronny Swoboda as a pinch hitter delivered the go ahead hit to center and then it was Amos Otis who doubled to the gap scoring the insurance run.

The the Mets gave the ball to Seaver and told him to go win it. Seaver pitched 7 innings strong striking out 13 batters. Leaving the game earlier then he may have wanted, Seaver gave way to Al Jackson who even though walking two, did the job in the final two innings.

The Miracle Mets move on.

Seaver put well in the end, "This was the toughest series of our life."

1986 Boston Red Sox vs 1995 Atanta Braves

1995 Atlanta Braves
Record: 90-54
Finish: Won World Series over Cleveland
Manager: Bobby Cox
Team ERA: 3.44
Team AVG: .250
Home runs: 168
Key Players: Greg Maddux P (19-2, 1.63 ERA), Fred McGriff 1b (27 HR, 93 RBI), Tom Glavine P (16-7, 3.08)

Greg Maddux may have pitched the best season in modern baseball with his perfromance in 1995. The Braves were great because of their rotation on dominant arms and took it the distance for their only championship. The bats were adequete as well with a young Chipper Jones, David Justice, and Fred McGriff.

1986 Boston Red Sox
Record: 95-66
Finish: Won AL Pennant, lost to Mets in World Series
Manager: John McNamara
Team ERA: 3.93
Team Avg: .271
Home Runs: 144
Key Players: Wade Boggs 3B (.357, 71 RBI), Roger Clemens P (24-4, 2.48), Jim Rice OF (20 HR, .324)

One strike away from winning it all this Red Sox teams has been resurected from history numerous times. A well balanced team with power and a high average the Red Sox worked for everything they acheived. Roger Clemens won 24 games including striking out a then record 20 in one game; the only concern as many know is their less then strong bullpen.

Pitching matchups
Game 1: Roger Clemens (24-4, 2.48 ERA) vs Greg Maddux (19-2, 1.63)
Game 2: Bruce Hurst (13-8, 2.99) vs Tom Glavine (16-7, 3.08)
Game 3: Oil Can Boyd (16-10, 3.78) vs John Smoltz (12-7, 3.18)

Long Ball Gives Braves Win

A good opening game for this anticipated series as Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens were the headline of the night. Both starters were good but not great as the game had its drama all the way until the final out.

The Red Sox got on Maddux from the opening pitch and Dwight Evans drove a single to right driving in two runs. The Red Sox then loaded the bases but Maddux struck out Spike Owen on a good cutter.

The Braves answered off Clemens from the bottom of their lineup, Jeff Blauser and Mike Lemke delivered two out hits to drive in runs and tie the score. The Red Sox took the lead in the third with a sacrafice fly.

The rest of the game saw strong pitching as expected, however it was the Braves who had the last laugh. Fred McGriff who has always been clutch hit the go ahead long ball in the 6th and then Clemens let up another in the 7th when Ryan Klesko took him yard.

A good close game at Fulton County.

HYSTERIA OVER COMEBACK IN ATLANTA

Another classic game in Atlanta as the 1995 Braves punished the 1986 Red Sox into losing another late lead and game, building to their legends as chokers.

Wade Boggs went 3 for 4 driving in two runs including one on a double that gave the Red Sox a 4-1 lead in the 4th inning. Left hander Bruce Hurst looked good up until the latter part of the game, when John Macnamara may have just left him in a tad too long.

In the eighth inning with the score still 4-1, Chipper Jones and Fred McGriff opened the innings with singles. Hurst settled down to strike out David Justice but with the bull pen warming up, Hurst was left on the mound one hitter too long.

Ryan Klesko slammed a breaking ball 393 feet to right to tie the game at 4.

With the tomahawk chant in full effect, the game went into extra innings where everyone thought it was just a matter of time. In the 10th it was Calvin Schiraldi who was in his second inning of work. With the winning run on second base up came Ryan Klesko again and this time the Red Sox decided to put him on and face Javy Lopez.

Lopez took a Schiraldi fast ball and sent Fulton County stadium into hysteria hitting a 411 foot walk off home run.

The Braves are cruising to a 2-0 series lead heading back to Fenway.

HUGE INNING AVOIDS SWEEP

Losing by 5 runs and heading late into the game against John Smoltz it looked as if it was curtains for the 86 BoSox, but they were jump started in a huge way and will live another day to battle the Braves.

The bottom of the seventh inning Smoltz was working on a shutout, but the flood gates opened in a huge way. Tony Armas opened with a solo home run to end the shutout but it was Marty Barrett who hit a three run homer to tie the game. Barrett had only 2 home runs in all of 1986. Then things got even weirder when none other then Spike Owen took a Smoltz pitch over the short porch at Fenway, it reminded many of Bucky Dent. Fenway Park can indeed create some rare moments. In the end Smoltz was gone and the Red Sox had scored 9 runs in the frame to completely turn the tide.

Once Cursed Always Cursed

Once again the Red Sox had two outs in the 9th inning and looked to wrap up an important match, and once again the lead and the game slipped away. This time Calvin Schiraldi let up a two out base hit to Fred McGriff that scored two, including the winning run after the Sox couldnt scratch in the bottom of the frame.

The Braves take the series 3-1 and got the clutch hits when they needed to. In this game the Braves actually took the lead in the 4th inning when Javy Lopez hit his second 3 run homer of the series and gave the visitors a 3-2 lead.

The Red Sox continued to lean on the long ball when Jim Rice and Rich Gedman went back to back in the bottom of the 7th to get the lead. Both batters cleared the Green monster off Steve Avery.

The lead held up until the fatefull 9th inning. A walk to Grissom to open the inning followed by a Chipper Jones hit, set up the dramatics of the rest of the inning.

The 95 Braves move on and continue the trend of success for World Series winners.
