NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Thursday, October 2nd, 1879: The biggest anxiety for 1879 new young players is getting drafted. For the young man with something to prove, simple entrance into the draft does not guarantee a big league contract. Some will suffer the excruciating torment of having to stand by as their competitors get picked before them, hoping that they get a slim chance to prove their skills anywhere. At any rate, teams now have 30 days to scout the draft pool before the draft is held. The Transactions page also gets a new section dedicated to the draft pool, which will be available for 30 days prior to the draft. The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be: 1. Roger Connor, 22 year-old first baseman out of college. 2. Buck Ewing, 19 year-old catcher out of high-school. 3. John Reilly, 20 year-old first baseman out of college. 4. Frank Mountain, 19 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 5. Lee Richmond, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 6. Mickey Welch, 20 year-old starting pitcher out of college. 7. Stump Wiedman, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school. 8. Arlie Latham, 19 year-old third baseman out of high-school. 9. Charlie Guth, 23 year-old reliever out of college. 10. Fred Dunlap, 20 year-old second baseman out of college. Thursday October 2nd 1879 Philadelphia 5 Cleveland 2 Dan Brouthers has a perfect 4-4 game. Athletics move within a game of first place. 20-Game Hitting Streak for Kelly Thursday, October 2nd, 1879: Just like "Old Man River" King Kelly just keeps on rolling along. The Cincinnati catcher stretched his hitting streak to 20 games today at Avenue Grounds. He was 3-for-5 in the Reds 11-4 win over the Chicago White Stockings. Baltimore at Philadelphia Saturday October 4th 1879 Baltimore 15 Philadelphia 9 George Bradley hits his first home run and wins his second game of the season. Jim O'Rourke and Doug Allison collect four hits. Sunday October 5th 1879 Baltimore 6 Philadelphia 0 Harry Arundel shuts down Athletics in five hits. Zero Hour: Arundel Blanks Athletics Sunday, October 5th, 1879: Harry Arundel of the Baltimore Orioles blanked Philadelphia 6-0 on a 5-hit complete-game shutout, striking out 3 batters and walking 1. Monday October 6th 1879 Baltimore 7 Philadelphia 1 (14) Orioles scores six times in the 14th for the win. Dan Brouthers goes 3-5. Best in Wins, Ks, ERA -- Britt Nabs Triple Crown Tuesday, October 7th, 1879: You wouldn't have to be a baseball genius to think Jim Britt will win the coveted Outstanding Pitcher Award this year. The Cincinnati Reds ace certainly has the numbers to take it, topping the National League with 26 wins, 1.45 ERA and 151 strikeouts to win the Pitching Triple Crown. NL Batting Title Belongs to Warner Tuesday, October 7th, 1879: Fred Warner gave Reds fans plenty to cheer about this past year. His latest achievement, the 1879 National League batting crown, gives them one more reason to celebrate. In 84 games, the Cincinnati third baseman hit .345 with 116 hits, no home runs, 49 RBIs, and 49 runs scored. Brouthers Takes Home AL Batting Title Tuesday, October 7th, 1879: Philadelphia Athletics first baseman Dan Brouthers is this year's batting champion in the American League, finishing up with a .349 average. Among his numbers were 121 hits in 347 at-bats, 14 doubles, 10 triples, 3 home runs, 33 RBIs and 59 runs scored. Final Standings
