Put the snow shovels down and grab a bat and glove. The season is almost here!
We're almost there finally and believe it or not the snow has finally gone down to what I would refer to as a gentle coating...baseba is officially 3/4 days away and I've never been so happy!

Are you in NY? Seems like you guys got off easy.

Unsafe.

(By the way, the situation: an out in the bottom of the 8th with the 67-46 Cubs down 2-0 and the heart of the order coming up. The weather conditions at game start: 78 degrees, sunny, with a 8 mph wind.) I think that should probably settle a lot of the arguments being made here.

The thread seems to have settled down, but there was an infraction issued for the personal attack posted on page two by mancandy.

Please keep that sort of stuff out of discussions in the future. Thank you

Is there a rule that clearly defines "nearby"? And as far as the "I feel like I'm having a discussion with children" comment is concerned, let me respond by saying "(︶︿︶)_╭∩╮". Baseball is a game for children of all ages.

[QUOTE=Mancandy;3845308]MOD EDIT: Removed the personal attacks and gave an Infraction as a result. I've also removed inflammatory and aggressive language at several points throughout the post.

Heh. Fair enough. I'll just restate that reading this thread is like watching people talk to a brick wall, which is both completely true and obviously no worse than his "I feel like I'm having a discussion with small children" claim(talk about the pot call...no, I promised myself I wouldn't escalate this any further) and leave it at that.

And just to get back on topic, again, just in case anybody is confused...unsafe conditions do not result in MLB games being immediately called. That is not how it works, at all. In 2008, I was at a game at Wrigley Field that was delayed by a tornado warning, with fans being advised to leave their seats and take cover in the concourse...and the game resumed two hours later. Apparently, the same thing happened during a Rockies-Giants game last year with fans being sent to the basement level. Which kind of speaks to the point that not only are games not called immediately due to unsafe conditions, but officials would specifically NOT call the game during unsafe conditions, because they wouldn't want fans trying to leave if conditions are unsafe. Being in the stadium is considerably safer than walking around outside, and once conditions are safe enough for fans to leave they would be safe enough to play. So the entire idea makes no sense.

(In case you want to look it up yourself, you will see that those games were ultimately called due to rain, but note that both resumed play after the tornado warning until a second delay eventually resulted in the game being called...because the rain wasn't going to stop, not because the conditions were unsafe. In the Cubs game, the second delay was prompted by an uncomfortably close lightning strike during play, and there's a video of Lance Berkman running from the batter's box to the dugout when it hit. There was another lengthy delay before the game was actually called, so the lightning strike also had nothing to do with the game being called.)

But it seems to be lost here that the OP had a fair point, even if it wasn't worded perfectly, that it would be cool if the game took into consideration that umpires will let teams play through much worse conditions in some circumstances. Games that are the last time two teams will play in a given city that season, particularly games that are the last day of the season, and especially games that matter in the standings...it takes a whole lot for umpires to call for a delay in those situations. And obviously there has to be a delay if there's a lightning or a tornado, but if that's what's happening, include that in the game. "Roy Oswalt gets the sign... OH! A LIGHTNING STRIKE! The players are running off the field... there will be a delay..."

It's an added layer of immersion. It's realistic. People need to stop taking everything that's not heavenly praising of the game as a personal insult. That in particular, and in general all around horrible attitudes from certain people(one especially), are a big problem on what's an otherwise nice board. I know I would come around here more than once a year if I didn't have to read that nonsense, given that it seems like it's always those people with the horrible attitudes who seem to feel the need to chime in on Every. Single. Thread.

Speaking of which, with the opening day roster update out, it looks like it's time for me to take my 11 month hiatus. Cheers.

Yep, I think a lightning storm would be the culprit here, or maybe a tornado warning that would have required everyone to run at the drop of a hat. I've seen college football games called because of lightning storms and such, so I think it could happen.

Meanwhile, the Giants and Cards played, what, an inning and a half in a downpour in the NLCS in 2012? That happens too.

Probably at some point (certainly in Cleveland in the past), but not recently in Detroit. The number of Tigers home games postponed in the 2009-2014 time period and the stated cause:

2009: 2 (both due to rain)
2010: 3 (all due to rain)
2011: 4 (all due to rain)
2012: 3 (all due to rain)
2013: 1 (rain)
2014: 2 (one due to rain, other due to 'inclement weather')

Instances of games being postponed specifically due to snow in the 2009-2014 time period.

2009: KCA at CHA, April 6
2010: none
2011: ARI at COL, April 3
2012: none
2013: NYN at COL, April 15; NYN at COL, April 17; ATL at COL, April 22
2014: none

The Yankees' home opener back in Hideki Matsui's rookie year was snowed out.
