Phillies Phodder: Weekly Report - 8/24/1987

Notes: The Phillies went 3-3 this week, losing 2 0f 3 to the San Diego and sthen taking 2 of 3 from LA. Pitching remains a problem as we gave up 44 runs in those 6 games. BRuce Ruffin who was on fire for almost 2 months, went ice cold, giving up 19 ER over 10 IP in his last 2 starts. That raised his ERA from 3.48 to 4.31. Joe Cowley (12 ER in 21 IP) and Craig McMurtry (13 ER in 11 IP ), were terrible in August and no longer in my plans. If they clear waivers will spend the rest of the year in the minors. McLarnan struggled in his first big league experience (5.1 IP, 7 ER, 15 H, 4 BB) and will get another shot at some point. Britt Burns has been great this year with a 17 IP, 17 H, 1.06 ERA, 6 BB/6K and will get a chance to hold a middle relief spot for the rest of the season. Len Watts has been steady but unspectatular at 5-10, 5.67 ERA, 4.37 FIP, 109 K in 138 IP. I signed Charlie Moore because even though he is a catcher, he can play CF and I needed a CF at AAA. Some of my AA outfields were getting healthy, so I released Wayne Cromartie who hit .135 in 55 PA at AA and .083 in 14 PA at AAA. The Utica Blue Sox won the Eastern Division of the New York-Penn League at 52-28 and will meet the Batavia Trojans in a best of 7 championship series. Division Leaders: AL East: Milwaukee 79-44 AL West: Kansas City 71-52 NL East: New York 68-55 NL West: Cincinnati 74-50 Notable MLB News: Astros SP Danny Darwin (75/75), torn flexor tendon, out 12-13 months Dodgers C Mike Scioscia (80/80), setback in rehab, out another 6 weeks Royals LF Danny Tartabull (75/75), fractured shoulder blade, out for 4 weeks |

Hey you took a chance on Cowley and McMurtry, no harm in that. They just couldn't deliver. Building for the future! A grand scheme! Looking forward to seeing how all this turns out, and like the detail. Feels like I'm reading a team newsletter. Good stuff!!

When you stink, you have to take those chances. The first year in a save is always tough because of the lack of free agents. If nothing else, getting Kevin Appier and Greg Hibbard made this year a plus. Hopefully they develop as expected and some of the others make a big step forward.

Notes: The Phillies went 4-3 this week, winning 2 of 3 from SF, losing 2 0f 3 to the San Diego and then won first game from LA. Pitching has been as they only give up more than 3 runs twice. Ben Oglivie cleared waivers and refused his assignment to the minors. Since he passed waivers, I shopped him around and Minnesota offered an 18 year old catcher who was holding his own at A ball. I accepted the trade. I had saw C Tom Prince on the waiver wire, and he has a decent arm and some gap power and plate discipline. He was injured and would not play this year but he was a speculative pickup for next year. He hit .281 with 12 HR, 48 RBI, 36 BB, 36 Ks in 358 PAs at AA this season. He also throw out 30% of base runners and has a positive zone rating. [B]MLB Playoff Reports 10/27/1987[B]
WOW! It was a wild finish to the 1987 regular season. The New York Mets may have clinched the NL East early, but the other divisions came down to the wire. In the NL West The Cincinnati Reds held off the Los Angeles Dodgers and won the division, on September 30th, with 4 days left in the season. In the AL East, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Boston Red Sox, were tied with 3 games left to go. In the final series, they played each other. Milwaukee took the first two games to win the divison. Sadly, Boston's curse continues as they won the final game of the season to win 100 games on the season. They had the second best record in the majors, but will miss the playoffs. In the AL West, the Kansas City Royals had a 1 game lead on the Seattle Mariners haeding into the final series of the season. The Royals took 2 of 3 from the Minnesota Twins, while the Mariners swept the Texas Rangers to force a 1 game playoff. The Mariners went into the bottom of the 8th with a 4-2 lead. The Royals tied it on a 2 run HR by rookie Kevin Seitzer. The Royals went on to win it in the bottom of the 10th to win the division! In the NLCS, the Mets took Game 1 by a score of 3-2, with Frank Viola getting the win and Ted Power taking the loss. In Game 2, Mets SP Dwight Gooden throw a 3 hit shutout. The Reds came up just short in Game 3, losing 2-1 in 12 innings. The Mets completed the sweep in Game 4 winning 4-3. Mets SP Dwight Gooden was named Series MVP. In the ALCS, both Game 1 starters went the distance and the Brewers won 1-0 behind Teddy Higuera's shutout. In Game 2, the Royals shifted home field advantage by winning 5 to 2. Kansas City won easily at home in Game 3 by a score 9-1. Then in high scoring game that saw 5 HRs, the Royals edged the Brewers 7-6, putting themselves 1 win from the World Series. Game 1 hero, Teddy Higuera went the distance in Game 5 limiting the Royals to 1 run on 3 hits as they won 9-1. The Brewers, back at home in Game 6, forced a Game 7 by escaping with a 5 to 4 victory. In an exciting Game 7, the Brewers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 2 innings. Kansas City cut the lead to 2 in the Top of the 4th, but Milwaukee answered back in the bottom half of the inning and tacked on a another in the 5th. Neither team scored again giving the Milwaukee Brewers a 5-1 victory and a trip to the World Series. Brewers SP Teddy Higuera was named Series MVP. Game 1 of the World Series went 12 innings with the Brewers winning 3-2 behind another brilliant outing by Teddy Higuera. Not wanting to lose their first 2 home games, the Mets turned to young ace Dwight Gooden, who responded by brilliantly shutting down theBrewers 6-0. He held them to 3 hits while striking out 9. Game 3, in Milwaukee, was a back and forth game, the saw the Mets emerge victoriously, 6-5. The Brewers evened up the series at 2, winning Game 4, 5-4, on a wlak off double by Paul Molitor in the 10th inning. In Game 5, Teddy Higuera finally got outpitched as Frank Viola through a 8 hit shutout as the Mets won 3-0. This put them up 1 with the series shifting back to New York. Game 6 was a slugfest that saw Milwaukee outlast the Mets 8-5 setting up a Game 7. In the final game of the 1987 season, the Mets score 2 runs in the 4th, Milwaukee 1 in the 5th and the Mets scored again in the 6th to increase thier lead to 3-1. They blew it open with 4 runs in the 8th and then David Cone slammed the door closed in the 9th, giving the New York Mets a 7-1 victory and their second straight title and third championship overall. Gary Carter, hit .429 with 2 HR and 7 RBIs to win the World Series MVP. Congrats to the New York Mets |

Going to be an interesting offseason for sure! I see the owner mood though is happy, which isn't surprising in Philly. As long as you're making them money, that's what matters most!
Good luck in the offseason! |

11/11/1987 - End of Year Report
It was a tough year for the Phightin' as they finished 71-91, which was the 2nd worst record in the NL and the 5th worst in the majors. This season saw a big turnover on the active roster as well as the minors as the GM started looking towards the future. Here is an overview of the players who played for the Phils this season: Catchers
Parrish will be out until around June. That will make the Daulton the starter with Nelson, if I resign him, as the likely backup. Infielders
Schimdt and Samuel are set at 3B and 2B. I may look to FA for a 1B or play Carmelo Martinez there. Giles, Gallego, or Weiss will compete for the SS job with the others either as the backups or in AAA. Schu and Jeltz will either be released or in AAA. Legg will most likely be kept at AAA. I like his K and BB rates and he can play multiple positions. Hayes had a better season defensively as a CF than 1B. Surprisingly, Schimdt was my worst defender with a -5.0 ZR at 3B and 21 errors. I may consider him at 1B at least some of the time next season. Outfielders
My inital thought is Hayes will start in CF, with James, THompson, Miller and Meadows fighting for the other spots. Gross is a FA and won't be back and Stone will be AAA depth. After looking at defensive stats, I think Martinez would be best suited at 1B Starters
I would expect that Ruffin and Gross would be the 1 and 2 unless I get a FA. Then Watts, Cummings and Burns and a few minor leaguers would fight for the last 3 spots. Maddux and Toliver would be better served in the bull pen. Relievers
Ed Nunez was outstanding when coming over and will open as my closer. Maddux and Orosco should open in the pen.Corsi, Toliver and Jackson will compete with minor leaguers and any FAs that I sign for the other spots. Awards: Silver Sluggers: C Lance Parrish, 2B Juan Samuel, 3B Mike Schmidt All Stars: SP Don Carmen, C Lance Parrish, 1B Von Hayes, 2B Juan Samuel, 3B Mike Schmidt Pitcher of the Month: Bruce Ruffin Players of the Week: Von Hayes (2), Mike Schmidt, Mike Easler 40 Man Roster: C - Daulton, Harper, Tom Prince IF - Hayes, Gallego, Legg, Samuel, Schmidt, Schu, Giles, Jeltz, Weiss, Tom Barrett, Rob Nelson OF - Gross, Martinez, Stone, Meadows, Miller, Thompson, Ward, Jose Leiva SP - Burns, Cummings, Gross, Jones, Maddux, Ruffin, Toliver, Watts, Steve Ontiveros, Kevin Appier RP - Corsi, Jackson, McLarnan, Nunez, Orosco, Rozema, Jim Campbell 60 Day DL - Parrish, James I will make changes to this before the rule 5 draft.
