This is in dire need of an update, so here it is.
the baseball times May 14th, 1958 NOTHING ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ the baseball times May 15th, 1958 ROSS BECOMES TALK OF SEATTLE Sky Chiefs right fielder Antonio Ross is on fire. He's so on fire that he has a 20-game hitting streak. He extended it with his 1-for-3 performance today against Juneau, with his squad winning 7-5. He's so on fire that the people are mentioning it to him when he's on the streets. "Every time I go to the general store, the cashier, first thing he says, is 'Hey! It's Mr. Hitting Streak!' And I tell you what, it's getting on my nerves," Ross says in an interview after the game. As of now, he's slugging .339, with 22 RBIs, 19 runs scored and 7 HRs. ROMAN DOES IT AGAIN, SHUTS DOWN MIAMI Omar Roman of the Fort Worth Monsters is on something today, as he blanks Miami 5-0. While giving up 7 hits, he struck out 10, keeping Legion sluggers at the bench. "It was a win I really needed. I looked at my pitching record this season, and knew I needed work on that, and I took my time in the bullpen, and it contributed," says Roman after his performance, which makes him 3-3 on the year. His ERA is now up (or should I say down) to 3.16 with 86 strikeouts. SCORES Houston 9-6 San Diego San Jose 5-4 Oakland Boston 1-6 Philadelphia Cleveland 3-6 New York Miami 0-5 Ft. This time, it's 37-year-old Mario Vazquez, a second baseman for the Swashbucklers. The native of Curacao has decided that family was more important than the game. WALLER MAKES MASTERPIECE, SHUTS OUT BEARS The Irish are having quite a season so far, and Jake Waller is making no exception. His squad hosted the Brown Bears of Cleveland today at Yankee Stadium, and Waller dominated, striking out 8 and walking 1 in a 4-0 shutout. Andy Rodeiro had some words about his performance. "He's using that fastball really well. He brings it down and leaves those batter guessing." Waller is now 6-2 with an ERA of 2.68. He's struck out 60 this year. May 17th, 1958 DE LA GARZA PUTS REDBIRDS ON SHACKLES, WINS 7-0 The way Santos de la Garza was pitching today in Omaha, it looked like he was the all star on a prison baseball team. He shut out the Chicago Cardinals in a 7-0 victory, striking out 5 and giving up 5 hits. He had a game score of 82, which is a pretty impressive total compared to his opponent, Gabe Hann, who had a score of 18. Garza's performance now makes him 8-2 with an ERA of 2.46 in 87.2 innings. SCORES Cleveland 20-4 New York (I'm not making this up) Boston 5-4 Philadelphia Miami 2-6 Ft. Worth Albuquerque 4-5 Tuscon (10 innings) San Jose 2-12 Oakland Tulsa 5-9 LV Houston 4-1 San Diego San Antonio 3-2 Denver Austin 4-5 Detroit LA 5-4 Columbus (10 innings) Jacksonville 8-4 Memphis (11 innings) Chicago 0-7 Omaha Honolulu 3-5 Colorado Springs Oklahoma City 4-1 El Paso Milwaukee 9-4 Long Beach Seattle 1-8 Juneau STANDINGS The ABC East is at a 3-way tie (excluding Miami, of course). the baseball times
May 19th, 1958 GENERAL MOTORS PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED It's that time of the week again, meaning that we're giving out awards to the week's best players. In the American Conference, LF Josh Turnage of the Boston Norse is our pick. He hit .700 last week, with 2 HRs and 10 RBIs. He is currently .393 on the year in hitting, with 10 HRs, 28 RBIs, and a .434 OBP. In the National Conference, it's 1B Poto Finocciaro of the Memphis Otters. He scared pitchers last week, hitting .462 with 3 HRs and 6 RBIs. On the year, he's hitting .440 with 6 HRs and 19 RBIs. LEYBA HITS 31, DESPITE DENVER LOSS Alex Leyba continues to prove that even though your team loses, you can still contribute. Even though the Sun Dogs lost 3-0 to the Norse at Fenway today, Leyba went 1-for-3 to up his streak to 31. When asked about his hitting, Leyba told the Times: "It's a thing you can't think about too much. It's part of your zone. Once you're in it, you can't get out of it." Mike Alman of the Norse held Denver to 3 hits, striking out 7 and walking 4. He's now 3-3 on the year. KASEY COX SQUARES UP, KS 16 IN GENERALS WIN Wolfson Park was full of fun today, as Kasey Cox of the Generals turned out amazing. He struck out 16 Black Dogs, tying the NBC record with Johnny Butkus and the NBL record with 4 pitchers en route to a 3-2 win. Generals manager Matt Igoe said: "We needed this boost. When you have a pitcher with control and an understanding, it turns into a win-win situation for your team." May 20th, 1958 MIKE HAYES FINDS SETBACK, OUT AT LEAST 2 WEEKS The Loggerheads will continue to play without CL Mike Hayes, as he's been bumped back another 2 weeks. While being treated for a hamstring strain, his light rehab workout didn't end well. "I got finished stretching when it just started hurting. It was sharp, and it hurt. It just hurt to stand," Hayes said about his injury. Loggerheads manager Aaron Searle had this to say in an interview: "It's not good to see a setback like this, but we manage. We do have guys that can do the same thing as Mike: get out there, pitch well, get a save." O'LEARY, CORRA HENRIQUES DISCIPLINED FOR BRAWL AT TINGLEY FIELD Mike O'Leary of the Loggerheads and Bruno Corra Henriques of the Archers will be out for 4 and 6 games respectively after being suspended for a brawl that they started today at Tingley Field. After a Jon Lucero home run in the bottom of the 4th, O'Leary was clipped in the side by a 2-2 pitch. Instead of shaking it off and heading to first, Mike ran straight to the mound and threw a punch at Corra's side. Corra responded with an uppercut, and the brawl lasted a full 5 minutes. "This is not tolerated by the NBL, and it never will be," says NBL commissioner Acunajrbravesfan. "These guys have to realize this is baseball, not boxing." SHUTOUTS GALORE IN NBL More shutouts today, and 4 pitchers contributed. Devon Hamby of the Veterans topped the Otters 3-0 at Riverside, whiffing 8 and walking 1. Larry Havery of the Sky Chiefs stopped the Gamblers 1-0, whiffing 7 and walking 2. Luiz Lopez of the Fusion blanks the Monsters 4-0, striking out 5 and walking 1. Finally, Brian Skinner of the Brown Bears shut out the Wolverines 2-0, with 8 strikeouts and 2 walks. OTHER NEWS Alex Leyba's 31-game hitting streak has ended in Boston, going 0-for-3 in a 4-3 loss. They fall to the Sun Dogs 5-2, as Elias Castillo struck out a record-tying 16 batters for Denver. He only gave up 1 walk and 2 hits in the effort. The Legion were once again disappointed afterwards. "I don't know what kind of team we drafted, but we're not making the most of it at all," says Joe Earl, Legion manager. EVEN MORE SHUTOUTS IN THE NBL Once again, the pitchers treat us to more shutouts. Today, we've got 3 spectacular games. First, Jake Waller of the Irish blanked the Wolverines 2-0 on 5 hits. May 22nd, 1958 IZZY HIT WITH SEASON-ENDING INJURY, GENERALS GIVEN SETBACK Izzy Ramirez, the ace for the Jacksonville Generals, will have his season end prematurely. Back on the 20th, his rotator cuff gave out and got torn. In that game against the Black Dogs, Ramirez struck out Miguel Bugarin for out number 2 in the 5th. After the previous pitch, he felt sharp, stinging pains in the shoulder region. Izzy was not available for comment, but Matt Igoe was. "This is certainly a heartbreaker. This month of May has been full of terrible incidents regarding our star players. First was Slaughter, now it's Izzy." RETIREMENT DAY: 2 MORE PLAYERS HANG UP CLEATS A pair of players will end their career at the conclusion of the inaugural NBL season. The first is Oakland reliever Seth Cooper, at the age of 37. "You know, umm, as time passes, age and weakening bones and joints, it can really take a toll on your body. It just hurts for me," Cooper said in his announcement. The other retiree is Long Beach SS Mike Martin, who wraps up his major league service at 38 years old. He made no comments. ALVAREZ GOES 5-5, TUCSON LOSES TO FIGHTIN' NY IRISH Ricky Alvarez had a splendid performance today at Desert Park in Tucson. He not only tied the NBL record with a 5-5 outing, but his team lost 5-3 to the New York Irish. Both teams are now 27-19. "I felt great out there. I ate properly, I drank properly, I exercised, and it worked. But I just wished that the rest of the team followed my formula to success," Ricky told The Baseball Times after the game. After his performance, he now slugs .332 with 7 HR and 32 RBI. SCORES San Jose 6-9 Philadelphia Tulsa 6-3 San Antonio Boston 2-5 Houston New York 5-3 Tucson Miami 4-21 Denver (poor poor Miami) Ft. May 24th, 1958 GAONA GETS ON HIS BIKE, HITS FOR CYCLE Alfredo Gaona can tell his grandkids that he made NBL history. In the El Paso Indians' 8-2 win over the struggling Austin Veterans, Gaona bought a bike and took it for a ride, completing the first cycle in the history of the National Baseball League. After striking out in the 2nd, he tripled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, hit a 2-run homer in the 7th, and made history with an RBI double in the 9th. "I didn't even know I hit the first one until just moments ago," Gaona told the Baseball Times via translator following the game. "I only focused on getting hits, helping the team win. So, uh, congrats to me!" He's now hitting .211 with 3 HRs and 10 RBIs in 26 games. SCORES Houston 5-3 Miami Las Vegas 3-11 New York Tulsa 8-1 Boston San Diego 5-6 Cleveland Philadelphia 6-8 Ft.
