Here it is. A huge update. I found a much easier way to pull from real-world databases/rankings for reweightings/additions/eliminations, so this is pretty substantial.
DOWNLOAD HERE Here's what you'll find: 1. Brand-new Panamanian namesets: A standard Hisp-Panamanian nameset and a separate Afro-Panamanian nameset that follows local patterns (Spanish first name, Afro-Caribbean last name). In world.default.xml, the new distributions for Panama are 95% Hisp-Panamanian, 2% Afro-Panamanian, and to keep fully Anglo-Caribbean names in the mix, 1% each of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Nicaraguan. I also added 1% East Asian-Hispanic (think Bruce Chen). Let me know if you think this should be adjusted any. 2. Further additions to the Aruban and Curacaoan namesets including a complete reweighting of the former using real-life data. Added more "island-style" first names mainly, especially to Curacao, which seems to use them more. Aruba seems a bit more traditional. This should reflect that. 3. A completely blown-up and redone Venezuela nameset and majorly revamped Mexican and Dominican namesets. I noticed there was a lot of "cross-pollination" among sets where some extremely or exclusively Mexican, Dominican etc surnames were also highly-weighted in the other sets. So you shouldn't really be seeing Cantu on a Dominican player or Disla on a Mexican one now, for instance. Or at least only rarely. This should help each country's player pool feel subtly different. I may do a Cuba revamp next. Stay tuned. Here is a 40-man sample of what each of the countries look like now. Let me know what you all think.

BIG UPDATE! Download here
In addition to some tinkering and adding, there are now two new namesets and two majorly updated ones.

Thank you so much for doing this overhaul! I do think it was long overdue for the namelists to have an overhaul. As mentioned, it was unusual to see like Disla appearing on a Mexican player, or Cantú appearing on a Dominican player. I did make that far less common on my name lists that I downloaded on here a few years ago. (I did change some things in mine, like ethnicity ID 194 is Venezuela and 224 is now Indian-American, and even threw in some Filipino surnames for ID 47 because it originally lacked them. I moved the female names ethnicity ID at the end because I wanted to make room for more ethnicities)
I had a couple suggestions that's easy to do: I was thinking maybe have Afro-Colombian as its own nameset, kind of like Nicaragua has, and it being a mix of Colombian and Caribbean names (e.g. Édgar Rentería, Jeter Downs, etc.) I know it's a bit of a longshot, given Argentina, Chile and Paraguay aren't really baseball nations, but they could have their own name lists because there's a lot of differences with the naming customs between the three countries. I did like the idea of Asian Brazilians as their own nameset, or even Afro-British (Which would be very similar to ethnicity ID 46, but with significant naming differences to set them apart) as their own names. I hope I'm not overwhelming you with too many suggestions all at once because I think it'd be a bit more realistic. Take the time that's needed. |

The Afro(X) namesets are more to pick up the Anglo-Caribbean descended populations and I found there's a lot of overlap between the Afro-Nicaraguan/Panamanian and the (English-derived) Colombian ones. Downs is actually more common in Nicaragua than in Colombia. You will also find Sjogreen, Hooker, Campbell, etc on San Andres Island, where the English-speaking Afro-Caribbean population lives. Main difference between those two sets, outside of weightings and a few names here and there, is that the Nicaraguan population in question is mainly English-speaking and uses English names (which you see in real life) while the Panama population largely uses Spanish first names these days. I mainly included both in the Colombia nation listing because at a brief glance it seems like Colombia's Anglo-Caribbean-descended population uses both English and Spanish first names. At least it picks up the flavor for now. Haha. But I will definitely consider a micro-set along the lines of those other two. I have like 15-20% of (Hispanic) Colombian players generating as African so that covers that aspect of it. I forget if I mentioned am considering doing a Japanese-Brazilian micro-nameset next! May make them a disproportionate number of generated Brazilian players too (though nothing crazy) if you all think that would be a good idea, considering they make up a good chunk of the baseball playing population there. I may just do it the easy way and have it combine the Brazil first name set with the Japanese last name one. |

Just FYI it appears the latest patch may override both world_default.xml and names.xml. Always make sure to have these backed up.
Anyway, I'm working on more updates. |
