1905 World Series
The 1905 World Series: New York Highlanders vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Results Game 1, October 11th, 1905, Hilltop Park Home Field Advantage: Evers, New York Open World Series with Win The New York Highlanders defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 14-11 in Game 1 of the World Series today. A big contributor was second baseman Johnny Evers, who was 3-4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. The win moves New York into a 1-0 lead in the series. Bill Hinchman's at-bat in the bottom of the second inning was a big one for New York. Coming to bat with no one out, runners on 1st and 2nd and New York trailing 2-0, the third baseman hit a run-scoring single. "It was one of those games where both teams were swinging the bat well," Hinchman said. The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Hilltop Park in New York. Highlanders lead series 1-0 Game 2, October 12th, 1905, Hilltop Park New York Tops Pittsburgh Again, 4-2 Starter Joe McGinnity was sensational for the New York Highlanders in his team's 4-2 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates in Game 2 of the World Series today. McGinnity pitched well, but New York picked up the win to take a 2-0 lead in the series. With the game tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the sixth, McGinnity had a key at-bat for New York. With the bases loaded, McGinnity, who finished 5th in the AL in ERA with 2.53 in 1902, hit a bases-clearing triple off Jack Chesbro, making the score 4-1, Highlanders. "We're happy," McGinnity told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last." The next game is set to be played for October 14th, 1905 at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Highlanders lead series 2-0 Game 3, October 14th, 1905, Exposition Park Highlanders Win Again, Extend Series Lead to 3-0 The New York Highlanders are one game away from a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates today after a road win at Exposition Park, 3-1. Highlanders right-hander Ernie Groth had a strong outing. He threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball. New York now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series. Groth allowed 1 run on 6 hits over 9 innings for the Highlanders. He walked 2 and struck out 1. "We won," Groth told assembled media after the game. "I guess that's all that really matters." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Highlanders lead series 3-0 Game 4, October 15th, 1905, Exposition Park Highlanders Sweep Pittsburgh in World Series With a 7-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Exposition Park, the New York Highlanders wrapped up their 2nd title in team history. New York left little doubt who was the better club. "Team" was the word of the day as the Highlanders celebrated the culmination of their banner year in the victors clubhouse following the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said New York manager John McGraw. "Our players felt that way all year and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as New York celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" in the works. "We're going to celebrate our team, our championship New York Highlanders," the mayor said. The champions completed the regular season with a first-place finish in the AL and a 96-58 record. Highlanders win series 4-0 Series MVP: 1B Burt Hart (New York Highlanders) |

The 1906 World Series: New York Highlanders vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates
Results Game 1, October 10th, 1906, Exposition Park World Series Game 1 Victory for Waddell and Pittsburgh The Pittsburgh Pirates started the World Series in style today, downing the visiting New York Highlanders at Exposition Park by a score of 4-2 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Pirates left-hander Rube Waddell threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. Honus Wagner dealt the Highlanders a blow in the bottom of the third. Batting with the bases loaded and Pittsburgh leading 1-0, Wagner, who finished 5th in the NL in runs with 93 in 1903, hit a 2-2 screwball for a 2-run single. Highlanders manager John McGraw did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
