1904 World Series results

1904 World Series: Boston Americans vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Game 1, October 14th, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh
Americans Edge Pirates, 3-2, to Open WS
If the Pittsburgh Pirates were expecting the pressure of the playoffs to get to Cy Young, they underestimated the old man.
The Boston Americans got a strong start from the 37-year-old right-hander. Young threw 9.0 innings of 6-hit ball as Boston won the contest, 3-2, at Exposition Park to take the lead in their best-of-7 series with the Pirates. The Americans now lead 1-0.
Young went the distance for Boston, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, while striking out 9. He walked no one.
"Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Young after the game.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
Americans lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 15th, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh
Boston Pins 5-2 Loss on Pittsburgh
When the stakes were high, Jack Chesbro raised his game to match.
The right-handed Chesbro turned in a stellar performance in Game 2 of the World Series, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Boston Americans to victory. He allowed 7 hits and struck out 5. The win gave Boston a 2-0 lead over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the best-of-7 series.
Chesbro pitched a complete game for Boston. The 30-year-old right-hander was charged with 2 runs on 7 hits. He struck out 5 during his 111-pitch performance.
"We're one game closer to our goal," Boston manager Jimmy Collins said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."
Game 3 is scheduled for Monday at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston.
Americans lead series 2-0

Game 3, October 17th, Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston
Pittsburgh Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 2-1
The Pittsburgh Pirates have closed some of the gap between themselves and the series-leading Boston Americans, winning, 3-1, at Huntington Avenue Grounds. Pirates left-hander Jesse Tannehill threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. The win cuts the deficit facing the Pirates to 2-1 in the best-of-7 World Series.
Tannehill confounded Boston hitters. Over 9 innings, he allowed 1 run on 7 hits.
"It's a huge change in atmosphere versus last game," Tannehill said after the win. "I feel like we're back in the mix now. We just can't let up."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston.
Americans lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 18th, Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston
Pittsburgh Win Evens Series at 2
The Pittsburgh Pirates took down the Boston Americans by the score of 6-3 and moved into a 2-2 tie in the World Series. The largest share of the credit belongs to Pittsburgh starter Rube Waddell, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball.
Waddell allowed 3 runs on 8 hits over 9 innings for the Pirates. He walked 0 and struck out 9.
"Coach said he wanted eight innings, so I decided to do him one better," Waddell said later.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston.
Series tied 2-2

Game 5, October 19th, Huntington Avenue Grounds, Boston
Critical Game 5 Goes to Host Americans, 8-2
Game 5 was big. So was Jack Chesbro.
In leading Boston to a crucial 8-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Huntington Avenue Grounds, the Boston starter rose to the occasion, tossing 9 good innings. Chesbro threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball as the Americans defended their home field to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 World Series.
Sam Mertes helped his team take an early lead with a run-scoring triple. It came in the first inning, making the score 1-0, Americans.
"We're happy," Mertes told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
Americans lead series 3-2

Game 6, October 21st, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh
Pirates Even With Americans After Home Win
The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Americans will take the World Series to a decisive 7th game. In a must-win situation, the Pirates beat the Americans, 10-5, at Exposition Park to force the series into what will essentially be a one-game playoff. Pittsburgh shortstop Honus Wagner went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 2.
Wagner contributed in the bottom of the first. With runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit a run-scoring single. It was one at-bat among others that helped Pittsburgh get the win.
"Things broke our way today and that's great," Pirates manager Fred Clarke said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh.
Series tied 3-3

Game 7, October 22nd, Exposition Park, Pittsburgh
Pirates Win World Series
With a 3-1 win over the Boston Americans at Exposition Park today, the Pittsburgh Pirates wrapped up their 3rd title in team history.
The Pirates left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game.
"Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said Pittsburgh manager Fred Clarke. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void."
A jovial mood filled the air as Pittsburgh celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order.
"I hope they have a big celebration," Boston manager Jimmy Collins said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it."
Pirates win series 4-3 (Pittsburgh Pirates (3))
World Series MVP: CF Ginger Beaumont (Pittsburgh Pirates)

1905 World Series results

1905 World Series: Washington Senators vs. New York Giants

Game 1, October 11th, American League Park, Washington
World Series Game 1 Victory for Joss and Washington
The stakes were high. Addie Joss was ready.
The right-hander turned in a performance for the ages at American League Park, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the Washington Senators to victory in Game 1 of the World Series. Joss held the New York Giants to 3 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 2. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for Washington, which now leads 1-0.
Joss was brilliant for Washington. The right-hander went the distance, shutting out the Giants on just 3 hits.
"We're happy," Joss told reporters after the win. "When you're in the playoffs, you've got to treat every game like it could be your last."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at American League Park in Washington.
Senators lead series 1-0

Game 2, October 12th, American League Park, Washington
Giants Even With Senators After Extra-Innings Win
The New York Giants went the distance and then some at American League Park to drag themselves back into a tie with the Washington Senators.
It took 10 innings to settle Game 2 of the World Series, but New York eventually took the 5-4 win behind the efforts of pitcher Al Orth. Orth threw 8.0 innings allowing 4 runs to aid the New York cause. The clubs are now tied 1-1 in their best-of-7 series.
The most important at-bat for New York came in the top of the tenth inning, when catcher Frank Bowerman stroked a first pitch screwball to left-center for a run-scoring single, putting New York up, 5-4.
"Every team in baseball loses," Senators manager Justin Moorman said. "We're in the playoffs and we still have the same guys that got us here. We'll bounce back."
Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at the Polo Grounds in New York.
Series tied 1-1

Game 3, October 14th, the Polo Grounds, New York
New York Tops Washington, 5-2, Claims 2-1 Series Lead
The New York Giants got a strong performance from pitcher Dummy Taylor, who stymied the visiting Washington Senators en route to a win, 5-2, in Game 3 of the World Series. The Senators could never get a bead on the right-handed Taylor, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The Giants now hold a 2-1 in the best-of-7 series.
The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Danny Murphy came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Washington pitcher Frosty Thomas, he hit a 0-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting New York on top, 3-2.
"We lost," Washington manager Justin Moorman said later. "We'll deal with it. The series isn't over."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Polo Grounds in New York.
Giants lead series 2-1

Game 4, October 15th, the Polo Grounds, New York
Mathewson Handcuffs Senators, Giants Seize 3-1 Advantage in WS
When the games really matter, the New York Giants put on their best show, beating the Washington Senators by a final score of 1-0. Christy Mathewson threw 10.0 innings of shutout ball. New York now leads Washington 3-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
The game was still up for grabs in the bottom of the tenth. With no one out, Mathewson hit a curveball from Addie Joss for a run-scoring single. The Giants, in dramatic fashion, had a walk-off win.
Said Mathewson: "It's just one win, but it feels like more when you outlast a tough opponent."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at the Polo Grounds in New York.
Giants lead series 3-1

Game 5, October 16th, the Polo Grounds, New York
New York Giants Take World Series
New York did well in regular season play, but they did even better in the postseason -- they won the whole shebang, finishing off the Washington Senators in the World Series 4-1 to claim the crown for the 1st time.
In the elimination game today at the Polo Grounds, the Giants polished off Washington 3-1 to win the Major League Baseball championship.
In the NL pennant race, New York compiled a 86-68 record and came in first.
Giants win series 4-1, (New York Giants (1))
