Amazingly this game was not played in New England, New York, Pennsylvania or Ohio but in a State that has only provided a Major League team for 1 season since the termination of the 19th century. Anyone like to post a reply as to who that post 19th century team was and the year?

The winning lineup in the first major league game ever played :-
1. Frank Selman (rf) 2. Bobby Mathews (p) 3. Jim Foran (3b) 4. Wally Goldsmith (2b) 5. Bill Lennon (c) 6. Tom Carey (ss) 7. Ed Mincher (lf) 8. Joe McDermott (cf) 9. Bill Kelly (1b)

The game was won 2-0 by Fort Wayne over the Cleveland Forest Citys. It turned out to be the lowest scoring game played in that first season of National Association competition.

The pitcher who threw the first ball in Major League history and the recipient batter will forever be linked in the record books. Interestingly the two can also be linked in that a strong case can be made for them to be the 2 remaining most impressive candidates from the 19th century for entrance to the Hall Of Fame.

Winning pitcher Bobby Mathews fell just 3 games short of being the first pitcher to amass 300 wins. Cleveland leadoff batter Deacon White went on to play 20 seasons. He hit a lifetime .303 and was a regular on 6 Championship winning teams. He played mostly at third base where he was the leading performer of his generation. Only 1 third baseman who appeared in the 19th century is in the Hall and his career commenced in 1895 5 years after White's final year.
