At 61-71 / 3.81 for his PBL career to this point, Tom certainly hasn't been as terrific as I expected he would be.

Today, however, he very much was.

This fine effort extends Junior's lead at the top of the PBL HR tally. Besides him, only Willie McCovey has 20 or more. I see few, if any offensive marks being bettered this year.

Seattle has made a bit of a move in the West, 33-21 over this month and last to lead by 8. Not home yet but they are looking good for a return to the playoffs.

After a couple of losing campaigns, the Stallions are right in it this year, trailing Boston by just one game in the North. Sam McDowell has improved with each subsequent season and looks like he'll be a bit of a beast for the remainder. He pitches a gem here.

This is great. Two questions: 1. How did you import real life managers? 2. What town does the New Jersey team play in?

Loads of fun seeing all these GOATs mixing it up against one another.

The managers are, for all intents and purposes, only cosmetic. A couple small personality trait changes but coaching is OFF so none of that really comes into it.

The Stallions are nominally in Jersey City, but proudly represent the Garden State in its entirety.

John Olerud has been one of the surprises in this league, doing much better than I'd have suspected and looking set to improve even further from where he's currently at. This is a particularly fine performance from him.

On a day that also sees New Orleans' Joe DiMaggio have a 7-RBI game and teammate Johnny Mize go 5-for-6 in a 17-4 flogging of Florida, Roy Halladay becomes the PBL's first 20-game winner of the season and looks well on track to eclipse Addie Joss's mark of 23 wins set in 1961.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of this league is seeing how the dev engine works for and against these players over time and how those movements are reflected statistically.

El Presidente rates only averagely and hasn't done so well to this point, but suddenly is having a great year and this is another excellent game from him.

Entering the 1965 stretch run, Seattle and Carolina look all but home. A streaky 15-14 month leaves KC still within Florida's reach, while it looks a race in two for the North between Boston and New Jersey.

  • Batter – Johnny Mize (New Orleans): 373 / 7 HR / 26 RBI
  • Pitcher – Christy Mathewson (Virginia): 5-0 / 1.04 / 30 K / 60.1 IP

Weekly Award Winners
  • 2nd: Bullet Rogan (Los Angeles) / Joe Morgan (New Orleans)
  • 9th: Rick Reuschel (Seattle) / Roy Halladay (Carolina)
  • 16th: Cristobal Torriente (New Jersey) / Albert Pujols (Florida)
  • 23rd: Jeff Bagwell (New York) / Johnny Mize (New Orleans)

Doc - of the Halladay variety - continues on his merry way. Despite the tasty-looking trad stats of 21-3 / 2.55, this won't measure up to the truly dominant seasons like Kershaw's 1963 or Maddux last year. In fact, his 3.5 WAR total to this point is astonishingly low, mainly as a result of his relatively high 96 FIP-. But at a league-best 83-56 and looking good for a deep title defence, I'm not sure the Trips are too bothered by such whimsical details.

Actually, it's been a pretty good campaign for all the Docs. Gooden is 16-6 / 2.88 / 128 ERA+ / 80 FIP- / 5.3 WAR, White 14-11 / 2.42 / 151 ERA+ / 81 FIP- / 5.4 WAR.

The breakout year I thought Duke would have this year hasn't really eventuated. At the time of writing he's slashing 246/340/384 with 14 HR and 59 RBI, good for just 1.8 WAR. Still, each of these is a career high or near enough to, and as this game shows, he looks headed in the right direction.

Don't you love it when sim imitates life, as the Billyball era in Washington lasts less than two seasons - 239 games to be precise...

This is the fourth no-no of the season, and the third in which the Fury has been involved.

End of 1965 Regular Season

A pretty uneventful season overall ends the same way, with no dramas down the stretch. Carolina wins 102, Washington loses 101.

Monthly Award Winners

Northwest League
  • Batter – Mark McGwire (Portland): 306 / 6 HR / 19 RBI
  • Pitcher – Dick Redding (Seattle): 4-0 / 0.64 / 20 K / 42 IP

Southeast League
  • Batter – Albert Pujols (Florida): 295 / 8 HR / 23 RBI
  • Pitcher – Roy Halladay (Carolina): 5-0 / 1.36 / 37 K / 53 IP

Weekly Award Winners
  • 6th: Jim Wynn (Seattle) / Roberto Clemente (Virginia)
  • 13th: Fred Clarke (Boston) / Jim Perry (New Orleans)
  • 20th: Willie Keeler (Las Vegas) / Lefty Grove (Atlanta)
  • 27th: Dick Redding (Seattle) / Joe Mauer (Atlanta)
  • 4th: Gary Sheffield (New Jersey) / Albert Pujols (Florida)

Milestones
  • 150 HR: Mickey Mantle, Frank Robinson, Aaron Judge
  • 100 SV: Zack Greinke, Rube Waddell

Other Observations and Points of Interest
  • Nolan Ryan back to relief duties at Virginia.
  • Old Aches and Pains Appling hits his 4th career HR.
  • Jerry Koosman gets just his 4th career win, Bob Lemon his 6th.

Batting titles to Willie Keeler (341) and Albert Pujols (353). In a heavily-dominant pitchers' year, Prince Albert (36), Ken Griffey jr (33) and Frank Robinson (30) are the only ones to hit 30 or more HR, while John Olerud's 125 RBI leads either league.

Doc Halladay ends up with 25 wins and his 0.893 winning percent is a new PBL best, while George Cuppy and Dennis Eckersley share the lead with 39 saves. Clay Kershaw sets a new mark with 20 CG, while Sam McDowell earns a record he'd prefer not to have by walking 173 batters.

1965 Paragon World Series

Carolina Triplets v Seattle Rainiers

Best of nine, Triplets with home-field advantage.

Redemption for Seattle and Sandy Koufax after 1964's heartbreak, but have they anything left in the tank to take on the all-conquering Triplets, looking to defend their title? If the answer to this is anything shy of a resounding YES!!, then this one could be over in straight sets. But I think this Rainiers group has plenty of moxie and will take a couple games from Carolina. The longer this series goes, the better I like Seattle's chances, but I'm still of the belief that the Trips simply have too many weapons all firing at maximum capacity right now.

Carolina in 7.
