A touch of magic in the air around Sick's as we enjoy a near-perfect opening stanza. 48-12 is where we sit, 21 games ahead of our nearest rival with the AtHoL's best record by some margin, and for now there's little if anything that isn't going precisely how we want it to.

BATS

What a first 60 from Vlad Guerrero. His first 40 were even more amazing before some expected regression cooled him off a tad, which just happened to coincide with the Babe going nuts. Frisch and Jackson have been great, and the production from our O'Farrell / Richards catching platoon has been a pleasant surprise indeed. Not all is perfect, as it rarely is. O'Neill and Bell each need a hurry-on, while Anderson is not long for this group, I fear. With his defensive shortcomings, we can't afford to carry the likes of his 173 / 0 / 2.

BALLS

An almost complete inversion from our pitching staff to this point, with the starters all coming really good and only Pappas among the relievers with an ERA north of 4. We pick up two-way player John Donaldson off the Waiver Wire and with him still on the min and with option years remaining he'll slot in nicely thanks very much indeed - JD's defensive skills at all three OF spots is, I'm afraid, another mark against Anderson's continued presence.

GLOVES

Looking good, although if I'm being picky I'd like to see those errors cut down a bit.

WINGS

For now, we'll be making as few changes as possible with the group purring as it is. So these guys will need to be patient but ready to step up should that change.

POCKETS

The locals are now lining up to sup from the Kool-Aid fountain, and I think we should end up with closer to $2.5m than $2m to spend next year. We have re-upped Smoltz (5/960), O'Neill (3/360) and Bell (2/295), as well as Vlad, Larry and Jose Rijo on 1-year deals. We have some tough decisions to make but they won't be made while things are going so well. We'll see if we can jag ourselves a ring first and then think about this sort of stuff. We are, as they say, all in for this year.
