Game 87: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
A barely decent showing by Noodles Hahn and some timely hitting led to the Boston Americans (46-41) topping the Washington Senators (38-49) by a score of 4 to 3.
Hahn (10-9) picked up the win, permitting 3 earned runs on 12 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch to finish with a Game Score of 50. Doc Scanlan (12-10) was tagged with the loss after allowing 4 earned runs on 6 hits, 6 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 58. While the Americans had a difficult time getting the ball in play, they made the most of those instances with Fred Clark (2 for 5, Run, RBI), Chick Stahl (1 for 4, Double, 2 RBIs, Walk, Stolen Base), and Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 3, Double, Walk) having success. Doc Casey (2 for 4, Double, Walk), Jack Doyle (3 for 4), and Willie Keeler (1 for 5, Double, 2 RBIs) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Doc Scanlan

Power Rankings
The Cleveland Naps (48-39) sit atop of the latest Power Rankings. While not possessing the best record in baseball (or even the AL for that matter), the Naps have won 6 consecutive games and have a 9-1 record in the last 10 games. The Chicago Cubs (52-35) and Philadelphia Athletics (52-35) remain in hot pursuit. The Boston Americans (46-41) remain in 7th place, while the Chicago White Sox (34-53) are now back in familiar territory with their last-place position.

American League Player of the Week
Big Ed Delahanty continues to smash the ball despite the many miles on his body. The Cleveland Naps outfielder had a tremendous week, smacking the ball to the tune of a .517 batting average (15 for 29) with 3 Doubles, 1 Homerun, 5 Runs, 6 RBIs, and 4 Walks for a slash line of .517/.576/.724 that generated 0.8 WAR, 0.73 WPA, and earned the steady-slugger his 4th American League Player of the Week award.

National League Player of the Week
Rookie Ambrose Puttman was not viewed as a top-level player when he was selected as a 3rd round pick by the St. Louis Cardinals, though there was hope that he would provide help eating innings and eventually developing into a back of the rotation player. Well Puttmann's efforts have been very welcomed by fans and front-office staff alike. In picking up his 1st National League Player of the Week award, Puttmann posted a 2-0 record, with a 0.50 ERA in 18 innings of play.

Highlanders Sign Armas
The New York Highlanders secured international free agent Hector Armas, landing him with a signing bonus of $2,980. If Armas is able to reach his potential, he should have a nice combination of power and contact at the plate, though having limited speed and lacking an meaningful defensive value.

Hot Stove Action
The proverbial Hot Stove is starting to heat up, as teams are showing more activity heading towards the July 31st trade deadline.
In the latest roster movements, the New York Highlanders sent reliever Jim Fairbank (#36 overall ranked prospect) to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for veteran pitcher Bill Whitrock. This trade makes no sense for me, as the Highlanders don't add any meaningful value to the rotation and they are giving up a very promising prospect. On a rather selfish note, I was in talks with the Highlanders to land Fairbank but my delay in pulling the trigger caused me to miss out. This really frustrates me! ![]() The other trade of the day saw the Detroit Tigers send pitcher Tad Quinn (#41 overall ranked prospect) to the New York Giants for pitchers Ed Fisher and Kaiser Wilhelm. On balance this one makes some sense, as the Tigers get some rotation help while the Giants get a solid prospect in Quinn.

Game 88: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
An outstanding pitching performance by Jesse Tannehill powered the Boston Americans (47-41) to an 8 to 0 win over the Washington Senators (38-50). This marked Tannehill's 6th win in his last 7 decisions.
The pitching gem that Jesse Tannehill (14-8) tossed was a thing of beauty; scattering 5 hits and hitting one batsman while striking out 4 batters in his 95 pitch shutout effort; Game Score 81. Frank Kitson (3-3) lasted 8 2/3 innings in which he allowed 8 runs (3 earned runs) on 13 hits and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 38. Jock Menefee covered the final 1/3 innings. The Americans' batters were seeing the ball well today, as they smacked the ball to all corners of the field. Leading the way were Bill Lange (3 for 4, Double, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, and Stolen Base), Frank Chance (2 for 5, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, Stolen Base), and Chick Stahl (1 for 3, 2 RBIs). Cy Seymour (2 for 3, Triple) and Kid Gleason (2 for 3) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #14 / Career: #54)

Spotlight Game Performance: Jack McCarthy
While the season has not gone as well as the Detroit Tigers outfielder had hoped for, Jack McCarthy put together a special night by going 5 for 5 in a 13 to 5 loss to the Chicago White Sox. McCarthy's special game resulted in a Double, Triple, 2 RBIs, and a Stolen Base to raise his season batting average .014 points (.225 to .239).

Game 89: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
Led by the strong pitching performance of ace Rube Waddell, the Washington Senators (39-50) played well today as they topped the Boston Americans (47-42) by a score of 8 to 2.
Rube Waddell (13-12) had a fine outing, allowing 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks, striking out 8 to finish with a Game Score of 72. Sam Leever (12-9) was tagged with the loss after serving up 8 runs (5 earned runs) on 15 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch in 6 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 19. Jake Boyd pitched the final 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball to finish the game. The Senators saw the ball well tonight, led by Danny Green (3 for 4, Double, Run, RBI, Stolen Base), Jack Doyle (3 for 4, 2 Runs, RBI), Duff Cooley (2 for 5, 3 Runs), and Kid Gleason (3 for 4, RBI). The Americans' limited offense came from Dave Brain (2 for 4, Homerun, Run, 2 RBIs) and Fred Clarke (2 for 3). Player of the Game: Rube Waddell

Reds Welcome Home Puttmann
Growing up just mere minutes from Palace of the Fans stadium, Ambrose Puttmann longed dream playing for his hometown Cincinnati Reds. With the deal reached between the Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals, that dream became reality today. With the trade, Cincinnati received Puttmann and minor league infielder Frank Gatins while sending pitcher Chappie McFarland to the Cardinals. I don't know if this was a case of the Cardinals applying the "buy low, sell high" principle coming off of Puttmann's recent Player of the Week honors, so it will be very interesting to see if this trade makes sense in the long run.

Game 90: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
A costly 8th-inning error by third-baseman Dave Brain proved to be a difference maker, as the Philadelphia Athletics (54-36) topped the Boston Americans (47-43) by a score of 4 to 3. This was a missed opportunity for the Americans to gain ground in the playoff race.
Earl Moore (14-8) pitched a solid game, allowing 3 earned runs on 10 hits, 3 walks, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 56. Noodles Hahn (10-10) was tagged with the loss after he permitted 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks; Game Score 54. Philadelphia's offense was powered by John Titus (2 for 3, Double, 2 Runs) and Billy Clingman (2 for 4, RBI), while the Americans received help at the plate from Bill Lange (3 for 5, Double, Run), Chick Stahl (2 for 5, Double, Run, RBI), and Frank Chance (2 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI). Player of the Game: Earl Moore

Game 91: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
Thanks to an early lead and the ability to limit damage to balls hit in play, the Boston Americans (48-43) topped the Philadelphia Athletics (54-37) by a score of 3 to 1. With the victory, the Americans are tied for 3rd place in the American League standings; 6 games out of the top spot.
Jesse Tannehill (15-8) picked up the win, allowing 1 earned run on 12 hits and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 62. Buttons Briggs (14-8) was burdened with the loss after giving up 3 earned tuns on 11 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 51. Boston's hitting attack was powered by Jesse Tannehill (3 for 4, RBI), Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Run), and Jiggs Donahue (1 for 4, RBI, Stolen Base). Tommy Corcoran (3 for 4), George Davis (2 for 4, RBI), and Tom McCreery (2 for 4, Run) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: Jesse Tannehill (Season: #15 / Career: #55)

Highlanders Dominate International Free Agent Market
The New York Highlanders are spending money like it is going out of style, as they landed Dominican outfielder Jose Quintana ($10,346 signing bonus) and Venezuelan shortstop Bill Beltran ($7,048 signing bonus). The Americans placed an offer on Beltran early in the negotiations, but was quickly eliminated when the price went so high.

Spotlight Game Performance: Harry Davis
In a game that saw the New York Highlanders thump the Detroit Tigers by a 11 to 0 score, Harry Davis was the star of the show! Davis went 5 for 5 at the plate which included hitting 3 Doubles and 5 RBIs.

Game 92: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators
A tough extra-innings game for the Americans (48-44) to lose. Despite having the lead in the 9th inning, they could not hold on and allowed the Athletics (55-37) to secure the 11th inning victory by a 8 to 7 score.
Starter Cy Falkenberg did not factor into the decision after allowing 7 earned runs on 13 hits, 4 walks, and 1 hit batsman in 8 2/3 innings of work; Game Score 28. Red Donahue pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless ball before turning it over to Mordecai Brown (13-10) who picked up the win for his 1 inning of relief work. On the other side of the ledger was Cy Young who likewise did not factor into the decision due to his surrendering 7 runs (5 earned) on 15 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 36. Closer Jose Ramos (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits and 1 walk. With neither pitching staff having command of their pitches today, opposing batters were locked in. For Philadelphia, George Davis (4 for 6, 3 Runs, 2 Doubles), John Titus (2 for 5, Homerun Run, 2 RBIs), Tom McCreery (2 for 5, 2 Doubles, Run, Walk), and Honus Wager (3 for 6, Double, 2 Runs) each had a fine day at the plate. For Boston, Jiggs Donahue (4 for 6, Double, Run, 3 RBIs), Chick Stahl (2 for 6, 3 Runs, Stolen Base), and Harry Smoot (1 for 1, 2 RBIs) played well in the loss. Player of the Game: George Davis

Game 93: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans
A much needed win against the last-place American League team. While the game was closer than I would have hoped for, in the end the Boston Americans (49-44) topped the Chicago White Sox (37-56) by a score of 4 to 2.
Sam Leever (13-9) got back on the winning track, limiting the opposition to 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 73. Charles Bender (11-14) was burdened with the loss after allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 56. While limited offense for the home team, Danny Shay (2 for 3, Double, 2 RBIs), Sam Leever (1 for 3, Run, Stolen Base), and Jesse Hoffmeister (1 for 3, RBI) did enough to held secure the victory. John Anderson (2 for 3, Double, Triple, RBI) and Mike Grady (1 for 3, Homerun, Run, RBI, Walk) played well in defeat. Player of the Game: Sam Leever (Season: #9 / Career: #31)

Spotlight Hitting Streak: Ed Delahanty
Cleveland Naps outfielder Ed Delahanty has been seeing the ball well over the last few weeks. So much so that Delahanty has run his hitting streak to 20 consecutive games and continued to put up MVP-type numbers on the season.

Power Rankings
The Philadelphia Athletics (56-37) remain atop of the MLB Power Rankings, but the New York Highlanders (55-38), St. Louis Cardinals (52-41), and Boston Beaneaters (49-44) are each trying to narrow the gap. The Boston Americans (49-44) have moved up to 5th place, while the New York Giants (35-58) occupy the last spot. It is odd that the NL leading Chicago Cubs are ranked 7th.
