David, got lucky on the mug shots. I've downloaded some photos for fighters without files for future projects and I just happened to have the last two you rated. Saved me some work. Maybe I should give you my photos and let you rate them

GEORGIE CROUCH WW (1935-1941)

Hometown - Los Angeles, California, USA

25(11)-17-5

Crouch fought almost entirely in Southern California with the exception of a 5-2 trip to the East Coast and Detroit and a 3-1 record in Hawaii. He boxed his way to a number of good wins in his career but could never string enough together to position himself for any sort of title shot. He out pointed Jimmy Garrison (who beat him on three other occasions), Ritchie Fontaine, Phil Zwick, Tony Chavez (also lost to Tony), Johnny Dias and KO'd Flashy Sebastian. He drew with Sheik Rangel, Tony Chavez, and Big Boy Hogue. Crouch was stopped twice in 47 pro bouts and was disqualified for not not trying in his final fight with Flashy Sebastian.

Like too many boxers that hail from my home state, Pinky Kaufman made barely a ripple in the boxing world. Now that Clay-Bey seems headed for the rocking chair, we'll have to rest our hopes on PA transplant Eric Harding who came back from two years off to take a decision from Telesco last week. (Borec has mixed up their 'Hartfords" by the way - he lives in East Hartford not West Hartford as they note; He'll have to earn a few big paydays before he can afford a home in West Hartford )

PINKY KAUFMAN WW (1925-1932)

Hometown - Hartford, Connecticut, USA

9(3)-11-1; 1 NC

This Hartford boxer had a few nice wins but never had much of a chance to put anything together between his somewhat weak chin and choice of opponents. He opened his career with a fourth round KO to Johnny Jadick. He stopped King Tut in two rounds in 1929 and beat Billy Alger on points the following year but had no other significant wins. Kaufman dropped bouts to Jimmy Belmont, Freddie Polo, Bucky Lawless, Ignacio Ara, Tani Loayza, Tut and Bruce Flowers (twice). He packed quite a set of opponents into a short 22 bout career and was stopped 7 times.

AL DIAMOND MW (1930-1938)

Hometown - Newark, New Jersey, USA

12(3)-25-1; 1 NC

Although he lacked power, Al Diamond had a good chin and boxing skills. He began his career 11(3)-4-0, mostly against less than stellar competition. However, a ten round decision over Ben Jeby catapulted him to an NBA and NYSAC World Middleweight Title bout with Vince Dundee in 1934. The two met in Diamond's home state of New Jersey and fought a full fifteen rounds with Dundee taking the decision. I am sure that most assumed that more would be heard from Diamond, but what followed was an epic losing streak that would see Diamond descend into ranks of the professional opponents. Over the four years that followed the world title fight, Al lost decision after decision en route to a 1-21-1 finish to what had been a promising career.

Diamond lost bouts to Paul Pirrone, Ken Overlin, Tait Littman, Young Stuhley, Frank Battaglia, Marcel Thil, Manuel Abrew, Eddie Pierce, Solly Krieger and Popeye Woods among others. With the exception of Krieger and Woods at the very end, Diamond pushed every one of these good to great fighters to the final bell but simply could not extract another victory to rival the win over Jeby.

Here are 5 more from the late 1940's. Includes some HW's but since I am not sure anyone other than myself would have much interest in them figure I will just make one post for them all rather than a couple here and a couple in the HW thread.

Angelo Ambrosano - Philadelphia Featherweight began career 12-1-1 against mostly unknowns before losing by second round KO against Sandy Saddler. He would lose his next 3 fights to Jock Leslie, Percy Basett and Billy Banks before retiring.

Tony Bosnich - San Francisco HW fought exclusively on the west coast. Lost to Turkey Thompson, Joey Maxim and Pat Valentine among others.

Leon Hutson - Cambridge Mass. featherweight lost twice to Fernando Gagnon.

Bob Johnson - Kansas heavyweight KO'd twice by Pat McCafferty

Al Spaulding - Baltimore HW had plenty of fights ending in KO's but more often than not they were picking Al up off the canvas. Late in his career lost to Archie Moore.

Thanks, there may be an interesting story behind Diamond, but I couldn't find much. I would imagine that as he got into the teeth of that losing streak, it may have become difficult for him to schedule opponents which may be why he faced several heavies and light-heavies (although that was not uncommon at the time from MW to HW). When you think about it, he was not someone that a fighter would want to schedule. Once the losses piled up, as a contender or near contender, you absolutely were expected to beat this guy so the win did little for your standing. But, Diamond had beaten Jeby, fought for World Title and until the Krieger fight, had never been stopped. He certainly couldn't be called a trial horse, you would never want a promising youngster facing him (at least if I was the manager).

You have to wonder about the management or advice that he was getting. Once he had dropped a few decisions to good fighters after the Title fight loss, I would have expected that a few real stiffs would have been lined up to build his confidence back up because he was clearly a decent boxer with potential. But that never happened, he just kept tilting at windmills and comming up short.
