Game 94: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans

Now this is more like it -- a classic Noodles Hahn pitching performance leads the Boston Americans (50-44) to a 4 to 0 victory over the Chicago White Sox (37-57). While Boston now has sole possession of 3rd place in the American League standings, they remain 7 games out of the top spot.

Noodles Hahn (11-10) pitched a fine game today, scattering 7 hits while striking out 2 as he cruised to a 101 pitch shutout victory; Game Score 75. Fred Glade (9-15) was tagged with the loss after he permitted 4 earned runs on 11 hits; Game Score 49.

Fred Clarke (3 for 4, Double, Run, RBI), Chick Stahl (2 for 4, Double Triple, Run, RBI), and Jiggs Donahue (2 for 4, RBI) powered the Americans' offense. Mike Grady (2 for 4, Triple) and Harry Bay (3 for 4, Stolen Base) played well in the loss.

Game 95: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans

The solid pitching of Jesse Tannehill powered the Boston Americans (51-44) to a 9 to 1 victory over the Chicago White Sox (37-58) to complete the 3-game sweep.

Jesse Tannehill (16-8) was dialed in as he limited the opposition to 1 earned run on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 75. The outing lowered Tannehill's ERA to 1.99 on the season. Bill Carrick (8-13) was tagged with the loss after allowing 7 earned runs on 11 hits and 2 walks in 6 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 23. Dad Hale was called in to cover the final 1 1/3 innings of play though he did allow 2 additional earned runs on 3 hits and 1 walk.

The Americans had several nice hitting performances on the day, led by Fred Clarke (3 for 4, 2 Doubles, Triple, 2 Runs, RBI), Chick Stahl (3 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs), Jiggs Donahue (3 for 4, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs), and Dave Brain (2 for 3, Run, RBI, Walk, Stolen Base). Spotlight Game Performance: Nixey Callahan

While on its own, the game was a fine pitching performance that the Tigers were happy to get from pitcher Nixey Callahan. More importantly though it provided fans and teammates a glimpse at what Callahan was like in the previous two seasons. For a multi-time 20 game winner, this has been an extremely difficult season for Nixey. I honestly don't have an explanation why Callahan's ratings and performances have dropped so much this season -- the mysteries of OOTP.

Game 96: Boston Americans vs. St. Louis Browns

A missed opportunity for the Boston Americans (51-45), as they blew a 10th inning 2-run lead to lose 6 to 5 to the St. Louis Browns (41-55).

Frank Owen (8-6) went the distance, permitting 5 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits, 2 walks, 1 wild pitch, and 1 hit batsman on a total of 167 pitches; Game Score 59. Cy Young was given the nod for the start but did not factor into the decision as he allowed 3 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings of play; Game Score 55. Jose Ramos pitched a solid 2 innings in which he scattered 2 hits, while striking out 3 in his scoreless effort. Al Orth (0-2) was tagged with his first blown save after surrendering 3 earned runs on 2 hits and 1 walk.

What a special day for St. Louis Browns 1st-baseman Bill Hassamear as he went 3 for 5 (Double, Homerun, Run 3 RBIs, Stolen Base), and teammates Patsy Donovan (2 for 5, Run) and George Magoon (2 for 5, 2 Runs, RBI) provided additional help. Homer Smoot (2 for 2, 2 RBIs) and Fred Clarke (1 for 5, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs) played well in the loss.

Game 97: Boston Americans vs. St. Louis Browns

A tough-fought game in which both teams played well and starting pitching was in the spotlight. Here, the St. Louis Browns (42-55) topped the Boston Americans (51-46) by a 2 to 1 score.

Andy Coakley (13-14) twirled a fine game, permitting 1 earned run while scattering 10 hits on a total of 154 pitches; Game Score 69. Sam Leever (13-10) was the tough-luck pitcher who gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 64.

The Browns offense was led by Jimmy Barrett (2 for 3, Double, RBI), Patsy Donovan (2 for 4, 2 Runs), and Billy Lauder (1 for 3, Double). The Americans had standout performances from Ossee Schreckengost (4 for 4, Double, RBI) and Fred Clarke (4 for 4).

Game 98: Boston Americans vs. St. Louis Browns

On a blustery night, the 70 minute rain delay could not stop Noodles Hahn from shutting the opposition down, as the Boston Americans (52-46) topped the St. Louis Browns (42-56) by a 3 to 0 score.

Noodles Hahn (12-10) scattered 6 hits while striking out 4 batters to complete the shutout on 127 total pitches; Game Score 79. Weldon Henley (11-13) was tagged with the loss after allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits and 5 walks in 8 innings of play; Game Score 66. Patsy Flaherty covered the final inning of play, giving up 1 hit and 1 walk in his scoreless effort.

There wasn't much offense coming from the Americans lineup, but when it mattered Jiggs Donahue (1 for 3, Triple, 3 RBIs) Frank Chance (1 for 3, Run, Walk, Stolen Base), and John Farrell (0 for 1, Run, 3 Walks) came up big. Hughie Hearne (2 for 4, Double) played well in the loss.

Freeman Sets Homerun Mark!

On Friday night, Cincinnati Reds slugger Buck Freeman launched the ball deep into the stands to set the single-season homerun record. In getting his 11th longball of the season, Freeman passed the record set last year by Topsy Hartsel and Herm McFarland. With 55+ games left in the season, it will be interesting to see how high Freeman can push the homerun mark.

Game 99: Boston Americans vs. Detroit Tigers

Staked to an early 2-run lead, it seemed highly likely that Jesse Tannehill would be able to cruise to another victory. Then again, things don't always go according to plan. In this game, the Detroit Tigers (49-50) mounted a comeback to prevail over the Boston Americans (52-47) by the score of 5 to 2.

Doc White (17-10) picked up the victory, permitting 2 earned runs on 9 hits and 4 walks; Game Score 61. Jesse Tannehill (16-9) was tagged with the loss after allowing 5 earned runs on 9 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 48.

The Tigers offense came from Nixey Callahan (2 for 3, Double, 2 Runs, Stolen Base), Tom Daly (1 for 2, Double, Run, RBI, Walk), and Mike Donlin (1 for 4, Double, RBI). Boston was led at the plate by Frank Chance (3 for 3, Stolen Base), Danny Shay (2 for 3, Run, Walk), and Jesse Tannehill (1 for 3, Double, Run, RBI).

Game 100: Boston Americans vs. Detroit Tigers

The 100th game of the season and the Boston Americans (53-47) topped the Detroit Tigers (49-51) by a score of 8 to 2. With the win, the Americans sit 6 games out of the top spot with just 2 weeks left before the trading deadline.

Cy Young (8-13) pitched a fine game, allowing 2 unearned runs on just 4 hits and 1 walk; Game Score 77. Nixey Callahan (2-13) continued his struggles as he gave up 8 runs (6 earned) on 14 hits, 3 walks, and 1 wild pitch in 8 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 25. Ed Fisher covered the final 1/3 inning of scoreless ball.

The hitting-attack was working well today for the Americans, as Fred Clarke (3 for 5, Double, Run, 3 RBIs), Chick Stahl (1 for 2, Double, Run, 2 Walks), and Frank Chance (3 for 5, 2 Runs, RBI, Stolen Base). Roger Bresnahan (2 for 4, RBI, Stolen Base) and Freddy Parent (1 for 2, Run, RBI, Stolen Base) played well in the loss.

American League Player of the Week

While the season has not been as smooth as he might hope for, Boston ace Noodles Hahn was dialed in this past week. In taking home his 1st American League Player of the Week award, Hahn posted a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA (both shutout performances) and 0.6 WAR.

National League Player of the Week

At this point it really should be named the Nap Lajoie Award, as the Cincinnati Reds superstar took home his 12th National League Player of the Week award. On the week, Lajoie batted .469 (15 for 32) with 3 Doubles, 2 Triples, 9 Runs, 4 RBIs, and 3 Walks for a slash line of .469/.514/.688 that resulted in 0.8 WAR and 0.33 WPA.

Americans Find Trading Partner With Cincinnati

The Boston Americans pulled off their first trade in nearly 5 months, sending veteran 2nd-baseman Art Madison and a 9th round draft pick to the Cincinnati Reds in return for a collection of players that may, or may not, have some "prospect talent" left in them. Coming to the Bay State are relief pitchers Ernie Ross (former 7th round pick, current #70 ranked prospect), John Skopec, and Bert Husting. The Reds retained the prorated salaries of Skopec and Husting.

Highlanders Fleece Superbas

It is difficult to understand what the Brooklyn Superbas were thinking when they agreed to send multiple quality prospects to the New York Highlanders in exchange for a middle of the bullpen arm. Specifically, Brooklyn sent closer Gene Wright (former #47 ranked prospect), reliever Dike Varney (#82 ranked prospect), and catcher Fred Abbott (#80 ranked prospect) to New York in return for reliever Cy Swaim.

Game 102: Cleveland Naps vs. Boston Americans

After a series of road games, the Boston Americans (55-47) returned home to treat their 6,352 fans to an 8 to 4 victory over the Cleveland Naps (51-51). Boston remains in 3rd-place in the American League standings; 6 games out of the top spot.

Don't let the 4 runs fool you; this was a dominate pitching performance by Noodles Hahn (13-10), as he allowed 0 earned runs and gave up just 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8 batters to finish with a Game Score 78. "Wild Bill" Donovan (11-13) was tagged with the loss after serving up 8 runs (6 earned) on 12 hits and 7 walks; Game Score 25.

Highlanders & Superbas Deal Again!

Okay, not going to lie -- this was rather strange to see. After the lopsided trade a few days ago, the Highlanders and Superbas reached another deal that saw the recently traded Dike Varney heading back to his Brooklyn teammates in exchange for veteran relief pitcher Bill Kissinger. Why the Highlanders would trade for Varney just to send him back 2 days later will remain an OOTP mystery...

Game 103: Cleveland Naps vs. Boston Americans

A difficult extra-innings loss for the hometown fans to deal with! In a 13-inning game that took nearly 4 hours to play, the Cleveland Naps (52-51) squeaked by the Boston Americans (55-48) by a 4 to 3 score. With Boston's loss and a Highlanders victory, the Americans are now 7 games out of the top spot and the Magic # is down to 36.

Both starting pitchers went the distance, though it will be interesting to see if they have any feeling left in their arms after tossing a combined 404 pitches. Picking up the win was Kid Nichols (12-13) who allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 13 hits, 5 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 72. Taking the hard-luck loss was Jesse Tannehill (16-10) who permitted 4 runs (2 earned) on 14 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 70.

The Naps were powered at the plate by Ed Delahanty (2 for 6, Double, Run), Harry Arndt (2 for 2, RBI), and Zac Wrigley (1 for 6, Triple, 2 Runs). The Americans were led by Kid Elberfeld (1 for 2, Double, Run, Walk), John Farrell (1 for 3, Triple, Run, Walk), and Bill Lange (3 for 7, RBI).

Game 104: Cleveland Naps vs. Boston Americans

Playing before 6,356 fans, the Boston Americans (56-48) jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 10 to 4 victory over the Cleveland Naps (52-52).

Cy Young (9-13) picked up the win, allowing 4 earned runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, 2 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 56. Watty Lee (14-12) was tagged with the loss after permitting 9 runs (5 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks in 6 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 28. Win Kellum was called in to cover the final 1 1/3 innings of play in which he gave up 1 earned run on 3 hits.

Not only was he the game's winning pitcher, Cy Young had a fine day at the plate as he went 3 for 4 with a Triple and 2 RBIs. Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Double, Run, 2 RBIs), Chick Stahl (2 for 5, Double, Run, RBI), and Dave Brain (2 for 4, Homerun, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs) played great. Watty Lee (2 for 2, Double, RBI, Walk), Lew Dill (1 for 2, Triple, 2 Runs, Walk, Stolen Base), and Ed Delahanty (2 for 4, Triple, Run) played well in the loss.

Senators and Cardinals Trade Prospects

With only 7 days left before the trading deadline, the Washington Senators and St. Louis Cardinals reached agreement on swapping ranked prospects. In the deal, Washington received pitcher Eddie Quick (#96 ranked prospect) in return for pitchers Arch McCarthy (#40 ranked prospect) and Arlie Pond. Not seeing the value for the Senators in this trade, as Quick only gives them an additional pitch (Forkball) and a tick faster velocity).

Game 105: Boston Americans vs. New York Highlanders

If Boston was to have any meaningful chance at making it to the playoffs, they had to come out big against the Highlanders. They failed to get the job done, as New York (64-41) topped the Americans (56-49) by a score of 9 to 6. The loss put them 8 games out of the American League top spot and increases the likelihood of a trade deadline fire sale.

Christy Mathewson (17-11) picked up the win after permitting 6 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 4 walks; Game Score 62. Sam Leever (14-11) was roughed up for 9 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits and 7 walks in 7 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 24. Al Orth was called in to cover the final 1/3 inning.

The Highlanders were led by Harry Davis (3 for 5, Double, Triple, Run 3 RBIs), Jimmy Collins (2 for 4, Double, Run, RBI, Walk), and Barry McCormick (2 for 3, Double, 2 Runs, RBI, Walk). Fred Clarke (2 for 5, Double, 3 RBIs) and Frank Chance (2 for 5, Triple, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs) played well in the loss.
