February 2298 - News and Notes - February 15-22

Heavy roll month continues - baseball less than a game month away!

15 February 2298 - Commando Wants to Be Truly Notorious

Jamaica Plain Red Rockets' minor league third baseman Notorious Fugate has spent the offseason looking to become offensive. While he is notorious for a notorious use of strange non-speak, Fugate wants to do something else: become notoriously good on the baseball field. He currently starts for the Haymarket Mall Commandos of the Downtown Boston League.

"My dad always said you have to pull some razorgrain to milk a brahmin," Fugate said. "That's what I'm trying to do, bang the nails on the heads."

"I can see him making improvements," Commandos hitting coach Steve LaFoe said. "They're subtle, but he works just as hard as anyone else. I think he can make it [to the CBO]."

Fugate agrees, "Yeah, I mean, you wax on, you wax off, you take your turn and keep it moving.

"I would say there's daylight at the bottom of the tunnel. You take your steaks and you cook them raw, not dead. That's the Commonwealth way."

18 February 2298 - Quincy Starts the "88 Special" Tradition

Taking the idea from the CBO champions and league rivals, the Oberland t-51s' tradition of giving its top pick #51, the Quincy Gunners have announced they are going to do something similar.

"We're calling our new tradition the '88 Special,'" Quincy general manager
Gunner Sprague said. "We want to award the player that has shown the most grit and embodies what we consider being a Gunner ballplayer is all about.

"To us, there is only player that has exhibited success on the field, has worked hard every day, is like a long-lasting battery of work ethic, can adapt to any situation, and can help us win ball games every day. That player is catcher Stuart Costantino."

Costantino has started every game at catcher for Quincy in his first two years in the game. Originally drafted as a 3rd-round pick in the 2296 Inaugural Draft, Costantino has a career .318 batting average with 13 home runs and 110 RBI.

18 February 2298 - Pondsip Returns

University Point closer Marc Pondsip returned to the team on Friday after a dangerous encounter with a super mutant in November.

Pondsip had his spine partially crushed from a supersledge swung by a super mutant primus. Thanks to quick action, Pondsip was kept alive and transported to the hospital. He later had his spine refused at Vault 81.

"We feel Mr. Pondsip was quite lucky," Deathclaws team doctor Dr. Musst Short said. "He survived a brutal injury to his spine, but some great doctors were able to patch him up. Now we'll see how he holds up long-term."

20 February 2298 - Starlight to Host Amateur Film Festival

Hoping to garner more tourist opportunities at the Starlight Drive-In, town mayor Irish Cait has announced an amateur filmmakers' festival throught the month of April.

"We figure after last season's debacle that we need to liven up the joint," Cait said.

Winners will have their games shown prior to Lady Killers games towards the end of the month. From April 19-27, the Lady Killers will host six games versus the Salem Witch Hats, the Sunshine Tidings Chemists, and the Slog Ghouls.

Cait announced the showing highlights: "We're using the opponents for our themes. On April 19 and 20, we're showing our Creepy Horror category movies because the Witch Hats are here. On April 22 through 24, we're showing our Science Fiction winners because of the Chemists, and April 26 through 27 we're showing our Monster Movies when the Ghouls come."

21 February 2298 - Swiger to Sit in 2298

Malden Grognaks (County Crossing) left fielder Nick Swiger has decided to sit out the 2298 season, citing personal reasons.

Swiger's father owns a small boat tours company in Nahant and had reportedly fallen ill. Though Swiger did not disclose his reasons, team officials suspect it is to help out his father's business which makes more than Swiger does sitting the bench in Malden.

Last season, Swiger appeared in 16 games, starting four. He was 7 for 27 (.259) with a double, a run, and two RBI.

22 February 2298 - Violet Hitting Bombs in Practice

The Starlight Lady Killers are feeling enthusiastic about their 2296 Rookie Draft first-round pick Zeldolph Violet. Violet had a batting practice to remember Tuesday as he hit 11 straight home runs over the movie screen in left field.

"I never saw that many balls go over the screen in one practice," Starlight manager Eric Bendure said, "much less by one player. This dude looks like a contributor."

While the third base job currently belongs to incumbent Hubris McBride and Violet's secondary position, first base, belongs to Willie Qesadena, Violet could find a way to steal time.

"Hey, last year, this team's hits died off at the end of the season," Bendure said. "It's my first year here. Believe me, whoever hits, plays. It's that simple."

1 March 2298 - Bloodbugs Minor Leaguer Hurt in Land Mine Blast

Malden Grognaks relief pitcher Dan Flory became the next victim in a dangerous 2297-2298 offseason. Luckily for him, he was not the main victim in today's accident.

On a post-practice trek to Relay Tower OMC-810, Flory and three acquaintances ran into trouble when one stepped on a landmine. All four young men ran away as fast as they could, but three seconds do not get you very far.

All four men survived, but all suffered shrapnel injuries. Flory had the least severe injuries, but he will still miss some time since the shrapnel poses threats to his internal organs.

4 March 2298 - Baseball Begins in the Seed vs Seed Series

All 24 teams, armed with a 50-player roster, will begin playing ball today in the Seed vs Seed Series. This is a preview for next week's Battles Tournaments taking place at Oberland's Graygarden Park and Nordhagen Beach's Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium.

The four-game series taking place from March 4-7 will be at one team's home field for each seed of the North and South tournaments (1 vs 1, 2 vs 2, . . . 12 vs 12).

The following games will begin today at staggered times:

12 - Jamaica Plain at Diamond City
11 - County Crossing at Concord
10 - Atom at Egret
9 - Abrnathy at Finch Farm
8 - Starlight at University Point
7 - Salem at Vault 81
6 - Sunshine Tidings at Roxbury
5 - Warwick at Easy Town
4 - Goodneighbor at Lexington
3 - Fort Hagen at The Slog
2 - Quincy at FHE
1 - Nordhagen Beach at Oberland

4 March 2298 - Mirelurks Gatekeeper Suffers Setback

A frustrated Tutton Gatekeeper told reporters today that he would be out an additional one week after suffering a relapse in his infection from a previous burn scar from branding. "I thought my recovery was coming along great, but then this happened," the Warwick Mirelurks third baseman revealed. "It's disappointing. I expected to be back with the team by now."

9 March 2298 - Mirelurks Player Has Yao Guai Scare

Warwick Mirelurks backup second baseman Richman Harris had a run-in with a rabid yao guai on Wednesday. The yao guai was in the vicinity of Lynn Woods where the Warwick team was touring after playing a series in Easy Town. They will play at Nordhagen Beach starting on Saturday.

Harris was not seriously injured, but he was scratched by the rabid beast. Team trainer Elijah Bagley was on hand and had rabies vaccinations, allowing him to treat Harris.

"Our security guards were able to take out the beast," Mirelurks manager Old Man Langford said, "but it got a swipe in on Ricky's arm. He'll be all right, just needs to take care of his wound so it doesn't get infected."

Harris is expected to be available to play if needed on Saturday at 4:05 PM when the Mirelurks play Diamond City in Game Two of the Battle for the North Tournament.

Teams will be allowed 30 players for the tournament, down from the 50 allowed to travel in the Seed vs Seed series against Easy Town. The Assaultrons won 3 of 4 in that series. Harris had one at-bat in the series, flying out to the shortstop on short left in Game One.

10 March 2298 - Scout Undercover: Top Farm Systems

A farm system is another name for minor leagues where young players are expected to "grow" from prospects to regular players at the top level, the majors, or in our particular corner of the world, the Commonwealth Baseball Organization.

Now that we are in Year 3 of the CBO and Year 2 of the Boston Minor Union, we asked the team of CBO Office Scouts, called the Office Scout Association (OSA), which five teams have the best group of prospects expected to play at either the CBO or BMU levels. Their votes are in and here are the results with their top three prospects:

1. Roxbury - P Beachboy Nut (7th overall), RF Young Goodman (14th), and Chris Connexx (19th)
2. County Crossing - C Biter Trout (5th), P Gavin Everitts (11th), and 3B Taygun Topaloglu (18th)
3. Concord - 3B Lucky Oldsun (9th), CF jared Zaccone (13th), and CF Cram Garge (46th)
4. Jamaica Plain - RF Goody Cloyse (1st), SP Aldo Sanch (12th), and SS Roger Chillingworth (58th)
5. Warwick - P Dave Kovalenko (4th), P Bobby Van Marter (22nd), and P Jerry Weisman (53rd)

Other Top Ten Prospects not making it to the top teams' list include Finch Farm's P Chris Deathclaw (2nd overall), Fort Hagen's CF Ben Pawlak (3rd), Vault 81's CF Aesed Hayjen (6th), University Point's LF Kelvin Blueprint (8th), and Easy Town's 1B Lannie Tykeson (10th).

11 March 2298 - Slog Prospect to Take Personal Leave

2296 1st-round pick Pockets Aintfull took a leave of absence from the team through the end of March. He plans to be back for the start of the Boston Minor Union season on April 5. Aintfull is the starting left fielder and pitcher for the Outpost Zimonja Strongbacks.

The Ghouls decided to leave Aintfull off the 30-man roster for the Battle for the South Tournament at Graygarden Park, home of the Oberland T-51s. Because of the time not playing, Aintfull requested a chance to return to his hometown in North Andover (northwest of Salem) to check in on his parents' health.

"We're not worried about Pockets," The Slog manager Mack O'Shea said. "His parents caught a bug before he left for spring practice and he wants to check on them since he isn't playing. The ESAU hasn't made its way to Andover yet."

Aintfull is a two-way player, but he struggled both at the plate and on the mound with the Strongbacks. In 19 starts at pitcher in 2297, he was 5-8 with a 5.98 ERA. He pitched 120.1 innings, allowing 80 earned runs, 157 hits, 10 home runs, and 60 walks, and he struck out only 47. In 24 starts in left field with 43 overall starts in the batting lineup, Aintfull was 43 for 172 (.250) with 10 doubles, two home runs, 29 runs, and 20 RBI. He struck out 44 times.

11 March 2298 - Vault 81 Shows Jealousy, Copies Oberland and Quincy

Following the lead of Oberland and Quincy, who have been far more successful teams in the first two years of the CBO, the Vault 81 Dwellers are starting a similar tradition of giving their namesake number to a top player.

The Dwellers have awarded star right fielder Deer Quickwalker with the number 81 as a representation of the team.

"Deer was the CBO's MVP, despite our poor showing as a team," Dwellers general manager Mike McGuire said. "That shows a level of performance that goes beyond wins and losses. For that reason, we made him #81 to represent Vault 81, hopefully for the entirety of our existence."

#12 Diamond City 6 vs #5 Warwick 10

An eight-run 7th inning propelled the Mirelurks from a 6-1 deficit to win the game. LF Patty Cuttooth earned Game MVP honors, going 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI. He also threw out a runner from the outfield. 2B Brad Krol was 2 for 5 with a double, a home run, two runs, and three RBI. RF Wayne Lacy hit a three-run home run for the Swatters in the 1st inning that gave his team an early lead.

#11 County Crossing 8 vs #6 Roxbury 6

Both teams combined for seven runs in the 9th, but the Bloodbugs were able to hold off the Knuckle Punchers. Despite the loss, LF Chris Hirschfield of Roxbury earned Game MVP honors. He was 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, two runs, and two RBI. County Crossing LF Tom Mastodon was 4 for 5 with a double, a run, and an RBI. 3B Taygun Topaloglu hit a grand slam in the top of the 6th inning to give the Bloodbugs their first lead, 5-2, and chase starter Nick Mutfruit.

BATTLE FOR THE SOUTH TOURNAMENT

#9 Finch Farm 11 vs #8 Starlight 7

The Four Leafs scored four runs in the top of the 9th on a solo home run by SS Tommy Junkman and a three-run shot by CF Ginger Rogers to break a 7-7 tie. MVP Rogers was 3 for 6 with a home run, three runs scroed, and four RBI. 3B Hubris McBride was 3 for 4 for the Killers, including a solo home run.

#12 Jamaica Plain 3 vs #5 Easy Town 9

The Assaultrons jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the 1st inning and never looked back in defeating the Red Rockets. CF Sean Samuels was 4 for 4 with two doubles, a walk, two runs scored, and two RBI to win the Game MVP. Angel Waterdrink pitched the complete-game victory, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. He allowed a 9th-inning home run to pinch hitter Travis Scope for the game's final two runs.

#10 Atom 12 vs #7 Vault 81 4

The Cats pulled away in the 7th inning with a four-run inning. MVP 2B Ray McMillen was 3 for 3 with two home runs, a walk, a hit by pitch, five runs scored, and four RBI. SS Luis Lopez was 4 for 4 with four doubles and three RBI. 2297 CBO MVP Deer Quickwalker went 2 for 4 with two RBI to lead the Dwellers. Vault 81's 10 hits were all singles.

StLee's Note - I realized after looking at the seeds that I switched the Roxbury-County Crossing and Salem-Egret matchups in the Battle for the North Tournament. The Rox-CC winner should play 3rd seed Fort Hagen, and the Sal-ETM winner should play FHE. However, I have those backwards on the bracket. I will fix the bracket and move them to their appropriate places on the bracket on Day 2. Thankfully it does not affect Day 2.

2298 Preseason Tournaments - 13 March - Tournament Day 2

BATTLE FOR THE NORTH TOURNAMENT

#10 Egret 2 vs #7 Salem 3

The Ninjas and Witch Hats engaged in a pitcher's duel with the Hats' Josh Hugs coming out on top in a 135-pitch effort. Hugs allowed two earned runs on two hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings to earn the victory. Dan Beantown pitched a scoreless 9th for the save. Egret's Nick Poppa allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings. RF Chris Treestump drove in two runs for the victorious Salem squad.

#8 University Point 4 at #1 Nordhagen Beach 0

The Deathclaws pulled off the first major upset of the tournament, shutting out the 2297 runners up. William Radwater pitched 8.2 shutout innings, allowing eight hits and striking out five. The game at the Party Boys' home stadium had a long radstorm delay, making a late finish to Day 2. 1B Jeremy Nicholson drove in two runs for the Deatchclaws. Two of Jones' four hits were two-out doubles representing the only two times in the game Nordhagen Beach was in scoring position.

2298 Preseason Tournaments - 14 March - Tournament Day 3

BATTLE FOR THE NORTH TOURNAMENT

#7 Salem 8 vs #2 FHE 5

The Witch Hats scored six in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd to jump out to an 8-0 lead over the second-seed Yao Guai. The game was also marred by the second straight day of radstorms, delaying the game in the 4th inning for more than an hour to push Game 9 past midnight. LF Tyler Spronk went 3 for 3 for Salem with two doubles, two walks, a run, and three RBI.

#11 County Crossing 9 vs #3 Fort Hagen 3, 10 inn.

The Bloodbugs exploded on the Shroud bullpen in the top of the 10th to pull away in the win and make the top three seeds in the Battle of the North Tournament fall to a combined 0-3. SS Sean Koester was 4 for 6 with a double and two runs scored. Jeff Rickashaw pitched 9.0 innings to earn the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on 11 hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Gavin Eviritts pitched a scoreless 10th.

#10 Egret 8 vs #5 Warwick 11

The Ninjas became the first team eliminated from the Battle for the North Tournament, thanks in part to an eight-run 5th by the Mirelurks. Patty Cuttooth was 4 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Game MVP. Melon Sanderson had the Mirelurks' only extra base hit, a two-RBI double. He finished with three RBI on two hits. Dustin Bowfiddle had four hits for Egret and Jason Juras drove in three runs.

BATTLE FOR THE SOUTH TOURNAMENT

#10 Atom 10 vs #2 Quincy 7

The Cats upset Quincy to make #2 seeds 0-2 on the day. Jeremy Schoolboy was 4 for 5 with two doubles, a walk, two runs, and two RBI. Stuart Costantino and Bill Black homered for the Gunners. Atom held off a 9th-inning surge by Quincy when they cut a 10-3 deficit to 10-7 before Freedom Williams recorded the final two outs.

#11 Concord 1 vs #3 The Slog 6

The Ghouls' Jason Woods pitched a complete-game win, allowing just one earned run on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. The only run allowed came on a 7th-inning home run by Ricky Ticky Laughy. Five Ghouls had two hits. Nick Homebody and Lernz Tentsleep both went deep.

#7 Vault 81 17 vs #5 Easy Town 6

The Dwellers scored five in the 1st and jumped out to a 12-1 lead after four innings to eliminate the Assaultrons. CF prospect Aesed Hayjen went 4 for 4 with a double, a home run, three runs, and three RBI to earn the Game MVP honors. C Ronald Raygun also had four hits. Easy Town's Joe Ransom had four hits to lead his team.

It was all on closer Curtis Thriceshot who was really good in 2297. So maybe he just had an off day and was pulled too slowly.
