Ouch. What a horror show of a season. Worst thing about it is that I simply have no idea why it is happening or how to make it stop - it is almost as if I am stuck in an abusive relationship.

Yes, you are reading that correctly - it says 7-18.

BATS

While you look at these metrics and most likely see nothing jumping out at you as signs of trauma, let me assure you - if that ungodly record leaves you in any doubt - it has been traumatic watching this group. Just no spark or pop from a lineup that is built to have bucketloads of both. Hard to reconcile this with the squad from last year. And, sad to say, it is the Babe funking up the joint worse than anyone. He flew out of the blocks in April but has hit 232 and 197 in the two months since with a combined 7 HR and 21 RBI. Were it not for Vlad heading in the opposite direction, we might not have won a game, although both O'Neill and Ripken have done all they can to get us moving. Frisch is on his way back to Seattle after a short (all we could spare him for) rehab at AAA, and I have everything crossed that this will precipitate some more lively proceedings.

BALLS

It gets no better here, with Smoltz and Rijo's putrid months setting the tone. Smoltz has just been wrong all year and his WHIP sits only a smidge below an unfathomable 2.00. Pedro is yet to record a win for us but hasn't been quite as bad. We call Sonny Gray up and replace Donaldson in the spin with him, and also grab Bob Lemon off the WW and fling Kimbrel and his 7.83 ERA over to Rochester. The proverbial shuffling of deckchairs on the post-iceberg Titanic, or so it feels.

GLOVES

The return of Frisch after his long absence will allow Dandridge to go back to his roving IF commission from last season and Reddick will go to AAA with backup C McCann staying put for now. While our ZR is in the black and our other defensive metrics not too bad, it is indicative of the bad headspace this group has fallen into that we keep making our errors at key moments and so they tend to cost us a bunch.

WINGS

While it isn't being reflected in the Prospects list, we're seeing some encouraging signs from our young guns - Matt Williams, Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez in particular. The three of them are up to AA ball now, while I'm also liking what I am seeing from both Brendan Morrow and Doc Cramer at AAA Rochester.

POCKETS

The boss, while certainly expressing his displeasure at our woefulness, didn't castigate me quite as vehemently as I was braced for in his midpoint review. That said, I wouldn't like things to stay how they are - I'm not sure I'll be back next year if they do.

We have re-upped on Guerrero, Petey, Brady Anderson and Jose Rijo long-term, along with Owner Goal Travis Jackson for 2 years and a few others for next year. Sonny Gray remains among those still on the lam next year and we'll see what he is looking for $$-wise before contemplating any further commitment there. I have screenshot our commitments, below.

The thing is that, with our rivals also struggling we remain a strong hope of playoff action. Providing, that is, we start playing like we belong and deserve to be there. If signs of a turnaround aren't imminent then I am likely to make a rash decision or three. Desperate times yada, yada, yada.

The updated version sees a bunch of fictionals at the top. It might take a while for things in this regard to skew back more evenly, because it seems like too much weight is being given to these IAFA and Scouting Discovery types vs the up-and-coming historical players.

Our farm system is languishing in 29th, well beneath the Boss's target of Top 7.

This is Virgil's first no-no in the AtHoL. IRL, he had quite the year in 1952 - throwing the 127th no-hitter in MLB history on May 15 against Washington while playing for Detroit, then throwing the 129th just a couple months later. Perhaps even more astounding is the fact that his record after this second one stood at 5-15! The Mark Leiter jr in this universe might know what he was going through.

Some may see these moves as foolish given we are finally putting together a run of decent form on the field. I guess only time will tell, but I feel they make us a better club right now and cost us little-to-nothing moving forward.

First off, we cut bait on Realmuto, who has been a stone cold 203/257/335 bust. We package him up with another genius offseason add in the sub-Mendoza-dwelling Curt Welch and some farm fluff for Tim McCarver.

With the C upgrade being an Owner Goal for this season and a few of the other OGs also in the red, I have been for a while now feeling compelled to at least try something. This is the upshot. I think McCarver is a good guy for us at least through his TC years (which end in '66).

With no viable options in the wings, that leaves us needing a CF for the soft half of the platoon with Anderson. Fan Interest is also on the Boss's radar and so I want to offset any potential hit (which never eventuated) with a rental who has good popularity. Torii Hunter is my first choice but he knocks us back with his NTC, so we go with Jesse Barfield instead.

Each of the noobs is having a fine season and we obviously hope that can continue. Neither are particularly enamoured of the move. Fair play, especially for Barfield, given both were on contending clubs and we remain a handful of games adrift.

With their help, we still have plenty of time to change that.

Our defending 2BL Champion Portland Phenoms get back to the playoffs but make an early exit and it is another first-time winner in their 5th try with the Tampa Smokers seeing off the Hot Springs Bathers in five.

And for the second straight year we get to open and add to the trophy cabinet at Sick's, with our A-ball San Leandro boys dominating (try 124-16!) again and this time converting it into their first 1BL title - would you believe it, at their 5th attempt - with a six-game triumph against one of my old farm clubs Peoria.

Two absolute classics as the Reds come back from the dead to KO the defending Champs and the Whales dismount the Cowboys with a thrilling walkoff win. That sets up two intra-Band matchups for the victors in the next round, while San Francisco takes on Houston and we face Montgomery. Both of my previous clubs await if the stars align.
