National League Announces Glove Wizard Award Winners
Sunday, October 16th, 1955

What does it take to win a Glove Wizard Award? It's a combination of good hands, knowing how to play the hitters, all-out hustle and a willingness to sacrifice your body to make a play. Good speed and a good arm never hurt, either, but not always required. This year's all-defense team in the National League consists of:

Pitcher: Dick Donovan (Cincinnati Redlegs)
Catcher: Stan Lopata (Cincinnati Redlegs)
First Baseman: Gil Hodges (Philadelphia Phillies)
Second Baseman: Hank Thompson (Brooklyn Dodgers)
Third Baseman: Eddie Mathews (St. Louis Cardinals)
Shortstop: Johnny Logan (Brooklyn Dodgers)
Left Fielder: Bill Tuttle (Pittsburgh Pirates)
Center Fielder: Larry Doby (Brooklyn Dodgers)
Right Fielder: Al Kaline (St. Louis Cardinals)

AL Honors Glove Wizard Award Winners
Sunday, October 16th, 1955

The Glove Wizard Award winners don't get the recognition of the home run hitters, but they are very much appreciated by managers, their teammates and by the fans, who know the value of defensive excellence. Great defense makes a difference in baseball. This year's top glovemen in the American League are:

Pitcher: Karl Spooner (New York Yankees)
Catcher: Smoky Burgess (Detroit Tigers)
First Baseman: Bill Skowron (New York Yankees)
Second Baseman: Jackie Robinson (Baltimore Orioles)
Third Baseman: Randy Jackson (Washington Senators)
Shortstop: Andy Carey (Kansas City Athletics)
Left Fielder: Jim King (Detroit Tigers)
Center Fielder: Richie Ashburn (Baltimore Orioles)
Right Fielder: Gus Bell (Detroit Tigers)

Boyer Is NL's Top Rookie
Monday, October 17th, 1955

He was a "talented and gifted ballplayer." That the way one BNN writer described the rookie third baseman for Cincinnati in the article announcing him as the National League Newcomer of the Year Award recipient. Ken Boyer came on the scene this year and quickly established himself as player to be reckoned with.

The 24-year-old Redlegs newcomer took the trophy by hitting .321 in 150 games this season and finished with 203 hits, 32 home runs, 114 RBIs and 100 runs scored.

Lopez Top AL Rookie in 1955
Monday, October 17th, 1955

The American League Newcomer of the Year Award has been given to Hector Lopez of the Boston Red Sox.

In the 1955 season the 26-year-old second baseman played in 138 games, recording a .313 batting average with 20 home runs, 78 RBIs and 89 runs scored.

Newcombe Scores NL Best Hurler Honors
Wednesday, October 19th, 1955

Don Newcombe had a marvelous 1955 season. The Brooklyn mound mainstay garnered the most votes and has been named the NL Walter Johnson Award honoree.

The Dodgers star dominated his opposition, finishing with 22 wins, 8 losses and a 2.74 ERA. In 34 starts he worked a total of 279 innings, striking out 180, while walking 69. Other clubs managed to hit only .220 against him.

Washington Star, Walter Johnson Award Winner
Wednesday, October 19th, 1955

The Walter Johnson Award for 1955 has been presented and the American League winner is Bob Rush of Washington.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Rush. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Senators star told reporters.

Rush excelled with an impressive 20-8 record in 35 starts. In 272 innings he yielded 255 hits and 84 walks, while striking out 136 and compiling a fine 3.24 ERA.

Best Bat In NL Belongs To Williams
Thursday, October 20th, 1955

Ted Williams has visions of big money next year. And why shouldn't he? He did everything Philadelphia asked of him in 1955 and even exceeded the expectations of some in the final year of his contract. He might or might not re-sign with Philadelphia, but he's certainly earned the right to demand a big deal by wrapping up the National League's Ty Cobb Award today.

He clobbered the opposition with 169 hits, 30 doubles, 1 triple, 33 home runs and 92 RBI, while hitting .315 and scoring 105 runs.

Willie Mays Named AL's Best Batter
Thursday, October 20th, 1955

It was a season to remember for Willie Mays. He was one of the most dangerous men in the league when he had a bat in his hand, and the American League announced today that he has won the Ty Cobb Award for 1955.

The Washington center fielder dominated opposing pitchers with a .336 batting average, 26 doubles, 14 triples, 53 home runs and 120 RBIs while compiling a .417 on-base percentage and scoring 142 runs.

Accomplishments
Andy Pafko, Hank Sauer, and Wally Post slam 3 HRs in one game
Nellie Fox and Harvey Kuenn record 6 hits in on game
Frank Baumholtz 20 game hitting streak
Bob Feller 250th win.

Ouch, that musta' hurt. After leading the league for most of the season, Washington gets red hot at the end and passes you at the post. Still, it wasn't a total loss. At least the Cubs won the World Series

Paul Waner

Waner in North American BaseBall League HOF
Saturday, November 19th, 1955
109 home runs, 2747 hits and 1255 RBIs are the stuff of legend, but Paul Waner doesn't see it that way.

"For me, baseball is about the team winning. I could have taken an 0-for-4 that day, but if our team won, I don't think you could have come into the locker room and been able to tell that I did not get a hit because the most important thing to me was that we won. That was what we intended to do when we took the field. That's what it was about."

Fortunately for baseball's newest immortal, he had far more good days than bad days. That's why Waner has been installed into the North American BaseBall League Hall of Fame by the Baseball Writers Association. In his historic career the standout right fielder participated in 2315 games, batted .319, scored 1345 runs... and won a few games, too.

Baltimore's Simmons Top Pitcher in May
Friday, June 1st, 1956
Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Curt Simmons still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 27-year-old starter for Baltimore was named American League Pitcher of the Month earlier today.

He collected 7 wins and 1 loss with 23 strikeouts in his 8 starts, putting up a fine 2.66 ERA in 67.2 innings of work.

This year Simmons has posted a 9-2 mark in 12 starts and has a 2.68 ERA.
