2298 Preseason Tournaments - 18 March - Tournament Day 7
For the first time, the lower seed can be considered the "home" team based on bracket results. Therefore, the team that has been in the winner's bracket the longest is the home team for Games 17, 18, 20 (potentially), 21, and 22. Game 23, if necessary, would be the opposite home team as Game 22.
BATTLE FOR THE NORTH TOURNAMENT #5 Warwick 0 vs #11 County Crossing 5 Zach DiGrande pitched eight shutout innings, allowing 10 hits, walking one, and striking out six to earn the victory and eliminate the Mirelurks. Warwick had 12 hits in the game, 10 singles, but could never manufacture a run. Mirelurks' starter John Diner allowed just one earned run on seven hits with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Unfortunately, the Mirelurks allowed four runs out of the bullpen in the next two innings. LF Tom Mastodon led County Crossing, going 3 for 4 with two RBI. The Bloodbugs had five doubles in the game. #2 FHE 3 vs #4 Lexington 9 The #2-seed Yao Guai were run over by Tyler Ross and the Synths' offense. Ross finished 4 for 4 with two home runs, a walk, four runs, and three RBI. Crooked Tostado went 4 for 5 with a triple, a run, and two RBI. Jon Hitman was FHE's best hitter, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Lawdog Whipple earned the victory by allowing just two earned runs on seven hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts in 6.2 innings. #8 University Point 5 vs #7 Salem 4, 10 inn. Mag Barbarian's RBI double in the 10th inning put the Deathclaws up for good, sending Salem to the losers' bracket. Jeremy Nicholson led the Claws by going 3 for 5 with a home run, a run, and two RBI. The Witch Hats were held to just five hits, but two were solo home runs by Tyler Spronk and Anotonio Toeclaw. University Point pitcher Adam Froggatt did not get a decision but allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits with three walks and nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Dave Caveman and Marc Pondsip completed the game BATTLE FOR THE SOUTH TOURNAMENT #7 Vault 81 19 vs #10 Atom 7 The Dwellers scored 15-plus runs in their third straight game in eliminating the Cats. Mark Dombrowski was 4 for 5 with a double, a home run, two walks ,three runs, and two RBI to earn Game MVP honors. Aesed Hayjen also had four hits with a double, a triple, three runs, and three RBI. Deer Quickwalker and Knud Bather both homered. The Cat's highlights came on three-run home runs by Shane "Bee's Knees" Stabb and Jeremy Schoolboy. #8 Starlight 1 vs #4 Goodneighbor 9 Batting second in the lineup, starting pitcher John Oldsink pitched a complete game and had two hits in the victory. Oldsink allowed one earned run on four hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts to eliminate the Lady Killers. He also was 2 for 5 with a run and a stolen base. SS Burtie Cuttooth was 2 for 5 with a grand slam, a run, and four RBI. Bryan Assman was 3 for 4 with a home run, two runs, and two RBI. Wild Cannon had two of Starlight's four hits, all singles. The team only threated in the top of the 2nd when Zeldolph Violet walked, followed by singles by Cannon and Hope Scrapper to knock in Violet. No Killers runner got past first base for the rest of the game. #3 The Slog 2 at #1 Oberland 0 In a battle of the CBO's only two champions, the Ghouls outlasted the defending champions, sending the T-51s to the losers' bracket. David Kiwi pitched the complete-game shutout for The Slog, allowing nine hits, walking one, and striking out two. Oberland's Sheng Kawolski, last season's CBO Playoffs MVP winner, got the loss after allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Yeah, I'm generally not one to blame individuals, I guess I'm just too soft to apply that kind of pressure unless it's really a trend (or maybe it's because I'm more a soccer fan where an individual tanking things like that is much harder to ever point to) but sometimes that really is just the case. For now though I'm fine with just calling it an off day, and I won't let it get my spirits down for the season.

Excellent win for the Hancocks, but I don't think we've seen the last of the T-51s for this year!

But we'll see. The T-51s were the #1 seed in the playoffs both seasons, so they most certainly are not a bad team! A .600 winning percentage is not dominant, but it probably gets teams in the playoffs still.

BATTLE FOR THE NORTH TOURNAMENT
Lexington 3 vs University Point 2 Lexington's Tristan Marble pitched eight scoreless innings before allowing two in the 9th, but still held on for the win to set up a winner-take-all final. Marble allowed two earned runs on 10 hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 8.2 innings. Doug Dee El came in to earn the save by forcing a ground out. Quentin Malone was the losing pitcher for the Deathclaws. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in 8.0 innings. The Synths' first two runs came off solo home runs off Malone. UP leadoff hitter Bernie Gonzalez was 2 for 5 with a double, a home run, two runs, and two RBI to lead the offense. Three Synths had two hits apiece, but never truly threatened. Ghost Story
from the archives of the Springfield Home for the Mentally Unsteady
Gregory Mortimer – a diary 23 March XXXX We talked every day about our life once we left this hellhole. We were to marry and tour the world with our fortunes. Our parents are all dead, but we don’t know why. We know we were here because of them. They say we killed our parents, but we don’t remember. We’re both the same, Lucy and me. I see words of some man called the Boss: “It’s just your ghost / moving through the night / your spirit filled with light / I need, need you by my side.” We both escaped and went back to her mansion. I felt something there watching us. I am mad, touched by the damn gods of mischief. But she is, she was, madder. Like a hatter. “Your love and I’m alive / I’m alive and I can feel the blood shiver in my bones.” She was suddenly just gone. And then standing there was a little girl, standing there giggling and laughing and cackling. That girl, that young girl, her portrait hanging on the wall. She was there, and she was Lucy. I could tell. She was Lucy, like what Lucy said to me at the Springfield Home. My love Lucy was a prisoner to her own evil child spirit, and there she was cackling, like a Salem witch. She pointed to the attic, and it was my duty to follow her crooked finger above upon the hanging ladder. “I’m alive and I’m out here on my own / I’m alive and I’m comin’ home / Yeah I’m comin’ home.” Lucy my love, hanging there from a rope prepared by the spirit awaiting her return. Her dress stained in the mud of the river we swam across hung limply. Her face held a horror, the face of staring your own ghost in the face and falling into an eternal abyss of madness and despair. Behind me, I heard the giggling, then the laughing, then the cackling. I ran, I ran, and I ran past all, I needed to return here, this hell is my home. “I’m alive and I’m out here on my own / I’m alive and I’m comin’ home / Yeah I’m comin’ home.” The Boss told me, over and over. Lucy my love is no more. Her ghost is in the mansion forever more. I sit here writing. I’m alive and I’m home. It’s just your ghost, Lucy. I’m alive and I can feel the blood shiver in my bones. I’m alive and I’m in here on my own.

March 2298 - News and Notes - March 23-31
Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 23 March 2298 - Rivalry Series Begins Teams in the CBO are taking on their main geographical league rival, starting today with a two-game series, before moving to the other team's home field for two more games on Saturday and Sunday. The matchups are: Brotherhood League: Nordhagen Beach vs Easy Town, County Crossing vs Finch Farm, and The Slog vs Salem Institute League: Fort Hagen vs Sunshine Tidings, Abernathy vs Concord, and Starlight vs Lexington Minutemen League: Goodneighbor vs University Point, Jamaica Plain vs Quincy, and Warwick vs Atom Railroad League: Oberland vs Vault 81, Diamond City vs FHE, and Egret vs Roxbury 25 March 2298 - Red Rockets Starter Sitting out Spring Training Jamiaca Plain 3B Mike Van Noord is going to sit out the remainder of the Rivalry Series and the week of Spring Training for personal leave. "Mike has a few matters to take care of," Red Rockets manager Mark Sellsword said. "We're giving him his space, but he guaranteed he report to Roxbury for opening day on April 5." No further details were offered, and Van Noord did not comment when he was seen leaving Quincy heading west rather than north where the Red Rockets would host the Gunners on Saturday and Sunday. Van Noord has started all regular season games for Jamaica Plain in the first two seasons. In 2297, he batted .277 but led the Minutemen League in triples with six. Some speculate that Van Noord was called out by teammates by seeking attention rather than working on improving his game. The team needs him to improve his bat for a chance to escape the basement of a tough league. Right now, it is possible the Red Rockets are battling for the worst record in the CBO. Wile Van Noord is away, rookie Notorious Fugate will take his place as the starting third baseman. Fugate was featured in a story last month how he is looking to improve his game and earn a roster spot with the Red Rockets rather than returning to Haymarket Mall in 2298. Some have also speculated that Fugate may be stealing the job from Fugate, though that has not been the case so far in the exhibition season. "I'll do whatever it takes to take the radstag by the horns," Fugate said. "There are good times and ugly times, and they all add up to seven." 31 March 2298 - Oberland Trades Away Two 1st-Rounders The T-51s and Dwellers confirmed this afternoon that a trade had been agreed upon. In the deal, Oberland will get 28-year-old LHP Elijah Cake, a 2nd round draft pick, and a 4th round draft pick, while Vault 81 will receive 21-year-old RHP Kurt Cats and 19-year-old minor league 2B Harry Byrd. It is speculated that Cake will slip into the fourth starter spot in Oberland that would have been Vince McCort's. He could also be their top middle reliever. "I don't think it's any secret that we need as much pitching as possible to stay on top," T-51s manager Dirk Steadyhand said. "We hate to move on from our young guys, but we need somebody to help us in 2298, not 2300." Cake appeared in just six games in 2297 in relief for the Dwellers. In 14.2 innings pitched as a reliever, he was 1-0 with a 5.52 ERA. He allowed nine earned runs on 19 hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts. At Mass Pike, he was 4-2 with a 2.68 ERA as a starter in six starts. There he pitched 47.0 innings, allowing 14 earned runs on 45 hits with 13 walks and 45 strikeouts. Cats and Byrd were each of the T-51s' two Rookie Draft 1st-round picks in 2296 and 2297. Cats started 20 games for Fiddler's Green in 2297, going 2-5 with a 6.91 ERA. In 113.1 innings, he allowed 87 earned runs on 139 hits with 81 walks and 65 strikeouts. Though he struggled last year, the Dwellers hope he can eventually become a solid middle starter. Byrd, the 24th overall pick in the 2297 Rooke Draft, is considered to have a good bat that should allow him to hit for average. He is not the fastest runner, so he may have to depend on contact hits for singles and some doubles, which may make him hard to place in the lineup. His glove needs lots of improvement as he would be considered a defensive liability at this point, which will delay him for at least a couple of years before he can hope to be promoted.

April 2298 - News and Notes - April 1-4
Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 1 April 2298 - Deathclaws Minor Leaguer Breaks Hand in Fight Boston Common 1B Chris Shields broke his hand in a post-game fight with Egret Ninjas minor league reliever Mike Stickhouse following their game tonight. Shields was not happy with Stickhouse's pitching, and attacked him after the game. Stickhouse ducked, causing Shields to strike the top of Stickhouse's head. Stickhouse was not injured. Shields will now miss most of April. No suspension is expected once he returns. 4 April 2298 - Warwick-FHE Trade Earlier today, officials from the Warwick Mirelurks and the FHE Yao Guai announced that they had finalized negotiations on a trade between the two teams. The deal will send 28-year-old 2B Richman Harris and 18-year-old minor league RF Marty Fischer to FHE in exchange for 32-year-old 1B Shawn Synthman and a 4th round draft pick. All players in the deal are expected to play at the BMU level. 4 April 2298 - Exhibition Season Standouts Here are a few players that stood out. Apologies that stats only were calculated during the official Spring Training Week, not the entire exhibition schedule, which included Seed vs Seed, the Battle Tournaments, and the Rivalry Series. Batting Stats - Note: Not all stats were calculated Pitching Stats - Note: Not all stats were calculated

2298 - Preseason Predictions
Now that Spring Training is complete, teams can turn their attention to the regular season, a 98-game affair from April through early-September.
For the 2298 season, P.A.M., or the Predictive Analytic Machine, has returned to offer her deep dive into the world of Commonwealth baseball. P.A.M. is a master of predictive analysis. Running the numbers, here is what P.A.M. had to say about the 2298 season. "I was, am, and will most likely be P.A.M. Predictive Analytic Machine. All systems fully functional. Baseball token recognized. I provide first order approximations of the behaviors of all residents of the region designated Commonwealth. Rephrasing. I predict the future. Rephrasing. I also provide first order approximations of the results of baseball of the league designated CBO. Commonwealth Baseball Organization. Nate Howard has reprogrammed this unit's new primary goal. He calls it the B.P.M. Baseball Prediction Model. Processes reaching maximum capacity. Output only. User must fill in own conclusions. Data sustained. Accuracy is expected to reach better than 80%. Results printed. Recharge in progress. End transmission." North Charles Association Analysis The Party Boys and Ghouls are expected to slug it out for the top spot in the North Charles Association. The rest of the Brotherhood League is not expected to compete, meaning it is very likely both of those teams are in the playoffs. In the Institute League, things are a bit muddier. Concord and Starlight are not expected to be in the league race, but any other team could win it. In fact, by PAM's prediction there will be a three-way tie for first with Sunshine Tidings expected to finish just a game back. We're not going to assume PAM's formula will happen this way, so we're thinking that Abernathy is the better all-around team of the four with an expectation that the Adamantium will have the NCA's top offense. At the same time, they will give up a lot of runs. For Fort Hagen, they will battle for that second slot, but they get the nod to beat out the defending league champion Synths. Finch Farm's RF Matt Basile is predicted to win the association Hitter of the Year award. Nordhagen Beach's Chet Arthur is getting the prediction to win the Pitcher of the Year Award. Starlight's Zeldolph Violet is the prediction to win Rookie of the Year. South Charles Association Analysis The South Charles Association features two surprises in PAM's prediction, making the BBN staff question if PAM has some functionality problems. The two big surprises are the predictions that Jamaica Plain will grab the Minutemen League wildcard, while Diamond City will take the wildcard in the Railroad League. Out thoughts: they won't. In fact, we have them both picked to finish at the bottom of their divisions. In the Minutemen League, we actually do not expect many surprises. Quincy should win the division thanks to a well-balanced team to put them over the top. Goodneighbor is our expected wildcard team, but Warwick and University Point (and apparently the Red Rockets) will have something to say about that. Atom is not expected to compete for the league title or wildcard spot. Oberland is again expected to be #1 overall at the end of the season. They should run away with their league yet again, especially with the addition of 48 games on the schedule. The T-51s may not find themselves as successful playing against the Minutemen League, but the rest of the RL will struggle, too. It is hard to imagine FHE dropping to 4th place as PAM predicted, but it does look like the Swatters and Vault 81 have the inside track to the wildcard. We shall see. Egret and Roxbury is our prediction to battle Diamond City for 6th place. Goodneighbor's Bryan Assman is the prediction to win Hitter of the Year. Chris Teddybear of Jamaica Plain is the pick for Pitcher of the Year. Roxbury's Beachboy Nut is the pick for Rookie of the Year. PLAYOFF PREDICTIONS North Charles Association #4 Fort Hagen vs #1 Nordhagen Beach - W #3 The Slog - W vs #2 Abernathy South Charles Association #4 Jamaica Plain vs #1 Oberland - W #3 Diamond City vs #2 Quincy - W Sole Survivor Series The Slog returns to prominence, defeating the defending champions, Oberland, in seven games.

"We have a scoreboard and a simple box score screen working right now," Swatters owner Moe Cronin said. "Other than Starlight playing movies and other videos on their left field screen, we will have the first digital scoreboard in the league." Cronin said he was working to make the screen work like a TV. "We're putting resources in to live replays and live video. It would be awesome to see more than just the TV broadcast. I want people to watch the TV here, too." 10 April 2298 - Southie, Radstags Get 1-0 Win Concord picked up a win at Tarberry Field Forever, toppling the The Slog Ghouls, 1-0.
