Wednesday, September 24, 2003 2003 IPA Pro Cup Series Ruthlandian Union North Division - First Round Series - Second Game Valmara Edges Glasco 6-5, Series Tied In a tense thriller at War Memorial Stadium the top-seed Valmara Vipers fought off elimination from the RU North first round playoffs. C Yoshi Motsuzuki's two-run eighth-inning homer put the Vipers in front to stay and gave them new life with a 6-5 victory over the fourth-seeded Glasco Athletics in the best-of-three series. Danny Blauser struggled, but got the win as he went eight innings and permitted five runs. In the ninth closer Yanni Wlodarczyk relieved him with the score 6-4 and and a runner on third with one away. Wlodarczyk staggered through the inning, giving up a run on a ground-ball out, followed by two singles, placing runners on first and second, but finally got the dangerous Ox Beauvais for the final out of the game and the save. Valmara ran up a 4-2 lead after seven innings, when the A's charged back and almost caught them. Charles Darby was the loser as he worked into the seventh, allowed four runs on eight hits with four walks and five Ks. Both clubs garnered 10 hits in the game. Viper 1B Masaichi Okawa and C Motsuzuki sparked the winners with two RBIs each, while 3B Lloyd Windham and CF Bucky Bucholtz delivered three hits apiece for Glasco. The series will be decided tomorrow afternoon in Valmara. Benson's HR Powers FM Over Ranford into Sweet 16 First baseman Royce Benson's two-run homer in the eighth inning powered the number-three seed Far Mountain Redhawks to a sweep of the second-seeded Ranford Bulls and into the Sweet 16 round. Benson led the Redhawks to a 4-2 triumph with three RBIs, while the 31-year-old righthander Sonny Elliott weathered 12 hits by the Bulls in a complete-game performance. Elliott fanned seven and issued three walks and stranded 12 baserunners. Ranford starter Bud Enright pitched well, but was tagged with the loss. He gave up two runs - one earned - in six innings and left trailing 2-1. Enright racked up eight strikeouts and walked three, while allowing eight hits. 2B Johnny Fenroy and SS Rick Fargnoli led the Bull batters with three hits each. Third-seeded Far Mountain will now advance to the Sweet 16 and play the winner of Glasco and Valmara. Last edited by Eugene Church; 07-22-2009 at 11:40 PM. |

Wednesday, September 24, 2003 2003 IPA Pro Cup Series Ruthlandian Union West Division - First Round Series - Second Game 'Jacks Oust V's, Moore Whips Volusia 3-2 Fourth-seeded Forest City derailed the Pro Cup hopes of first-seed Volusia with a 3-2 victory to oust the Vigilantes from the IPA playoffs. The Lumberjacks will advance to the Sweet 16 round against the winner of the Middlefield-Colfax series. Glenn Moore, a 31-year-old righty, pitched a whale of a game to eliminate Volusia. Moore held the V's to just three hits over eight and a third innings. He shut them out for the first eight innings on just two hits. Manager Robbie Jackson pulled him with runners on second and third with one out in the ninth and the score 3-0. Jackson brought in Big Jack Vail from the bullpen to try and stem the Vigilantes last-ditch rally. Vail got out number two on a ground out, but a run scored making it 3-1. Pinchhitter Winky Rush rapped an RBI double and cut the margin to just one run with the tying run on second. After intentionally walking 2B Chaco Rivera, Vail nailed down the win by retiring pinchhitter Ruben De Andres on a fly ball to left field. Volusia got a strong outing from Carl Schmitz, who tossed eight innings, stopping Forest City on two runs and six hits with eight Ks and only one walk. Schmitz was tagged with the loss. 2B Jesse Wolf and C Joey Jarvis led the Lumberjacks with solo homers in the fourth and seventh innings respectively. Wolf also homered in the first game. Roosters Roll On To Sweet 16, Sweep Colfax The Middlefield Roosters dumped the Colfax Blasters 7-3 and rolled on to the IPA Sweet 16 by sweeping them in two games. Jamie Hicks, a 22-year-old southpaw shut the Blasters out until the eighth inning, when he gave up three unearned runs. By then it was too little, too late; the Roosters already had rung up seven runs. RF Bailey Norcross and 3B Lowell Satterwhite led Middlefield at the plate with home runs. Norcross hit a solo shot in the opening frame and Satterwhite cracked a two-run homer in the second inning. In all, the Roosters had 10 hits to just five for Colfax. Hicks was the winner. He fanned eight and walked only one in eight impressive innings. Taking the loss was Harry Manning, who allowed five runs in five innings. Blaster third baseman Neely Keeton clouted a two-run blast for Colfax. Middlefield will travel to Forest City for game one of the Sweet 16. If three games are needed, then the Roosters will host the final two encounters. The best-of-three series will begin Friday at Riverside Stadium. |

Wednesday, September 24, 2003 2003 IPA Pro Cup Series Tycobbian Union South Division - First Round Series - Second Game SA Evens Series with 6-4 Triumph Over Ginza Ninjas At home at the Casa de Beisbol, the favored San Alejo Montaneros bolted to a 4-0 lead in the first frame and hung on to beat the Ginza Ninjas 6-4. 3B Paolo Huerta unleashed a three-run blast to get the Montaneros on the scoreboard early. Winning pitcher Ernie Arrezonda went seven innings and surrendered four runs and eight hits. He got some great help from closer Domenico Belizon, who got Arrezondo out of a huge jam in the top of the eighth. He relieved with no outs and the score 6-3 and two runners on base. Ginza scored a run on a wild pitch and cut the margin to 6-4, but that's was it for them against Belizon. With one away he loaded up the bases with an intentional walk, then Belizon ended the threat with a 6-4-3 double play. Belizon struck out three Ninjas and gave up only one hit in two innings for the save. Huerta has two hits and four RBIs to pace the Montaneros. CF Vidal Munos scored twice and went two-for-four in the game. C Tokuma Kubo supplied three RBIs for the Ninja offense with an RBI double in the second and a two-run single in the sixth. 20-game winner Carl Trebek sustained the loss in an ineffective start. Trebek was rapped for six runs and seven hits in just four innings. He exited trailing 6-1. Game three will also be at the Case de Beisbol in San Alejo. The series finale will be played tomorrow afternoon. Typhoons Tops 'Canes 5-1, Longstreet Ties Series Big 6-7 James Longstreet was on top of his game as the 30-year-old Turon Typhoon righthander throttled Cape Coral 5-1 on seven hits to tie up the TU South playoff series at one game each. Question for you Eugene, at the moment as you know I'm doing the dynasty around the Brooklyn Dodgers and as I've said Gil Hodges is a favourite of mine but having fictional teams and players in your league do you have a favourite team and player within your dynasty ?

I guess my favorite player would Danny Church, a light-hitting shortstop for the Belair Beach Sunbirds. My real name is Daniel Eugene Church, but have always gone by Danny except here on the forum. I gave him ratings based on my baseball talent and experience. After three years, Church is hitting a career .273 (.245, .296, .277). He is a sure-handed infielder and ranks high in assists with a .977 FA and good range. Batting-wise Church averages 27 doubles, 7 triples and 8 homers with 70 walks and 55 Ks over the three seasons with 71 runs scored and 57 RBIs. He's a good baserunner, but not fast. Church steals about 7 bases a season. He's just a good, solid shortstop and will never make the All-Star team. We just see how Danny Church develops. He is in his early 20s. I hope he has many years left in the IPA. My favorite town in the Islands would be Belair Beach as it is very similar to Mobile, Alabama where I grew up. I love living in the US South for its great food, climate and easy life style. It is city life, but with a small town feeling. But really and truly, after thinking about it, my favorite player in the IPA is Charles Darby, a pitcher for the Glasco Athletics. In real life he was my very talented cousin. He is the one who gave me a love for sports and baseball that has made my life so special. He was 18 years old and I was 10 and he used to take me to his semi-pro baseball games every Sunday in Florence, Alabama. He played for the Monumental Park Red Sox. Charles was a talented and gifted pitcher. I would keep track of his strikeouts in the game and would let him know at the end of the game. He threw hard and one game had 18 Ks in a pretty fast league. I think he could have made it in pro baseball. He was a workhorse and quite good. He could swing a good bat, too. But the Korean War intervened in his life as he served four years in the Navy aboard the carrier, the Bon Homme Richard. At the end of the war, he left his sports career behind to make a living. We had some great summers together during his baseball days. We seldom saw each other in later years, usually at family gatherings. He died at 72 a few years ago. Charles was a big brother that I never had. He really could do anything. He could sing great harmony and could have been a fine singer, pop, country and gospel. Sadly he never really used his talents to the fullest. He had so much potential he could have succeeded in any endeavor. In gratitude for what he meant to my life, I put him in my Islandian Pro Alliance. I always wished he has been a pro baseball player. I think he would have done well. He had the potential to play Double A or Triple A baseball in the 1950s. OOTPB made it possible for him to live again. I can once again count his strikeouts. Charles Darby is 53-48 in three years with the Glasco A's with a 3.45 ERA, 7 shutouts and 45 complete games. He was 18-16, 18-14 and 17-18. Glasco finished 5th, 1st and 4th in those seasons. One of the best players I ever played ball with was Rick Fargnoli, who I played with in the USAF in 1960 in Turkey. He was a great shortstop. I had to played third base because of him. ![]() I made the base all-star team at third base and Rick was the shortstop. Five of our players on the Charlie Trick intramural team made the base team. We went to the tournament and finished fourth out of 20 teams. Three of our team made the All-Turkey team and went to Germany and won the Air Force European championship. Rick was the best shortstop in the Air Force. No, I didn't make the All-Turkey team and go to Germany. I just couldn't swing the bat well enough. So Rick Fargnoli is in my IPA. He plays for the Ranford Bulls. Rick is fielding .977, just like me, but he has far greater range with 500 assists a year to my 453 per season. Fargnoli is averaging .292 with 35 doubles, 14 triples and 19 home runs in his two seasons. He has scored 84 runs a season and driven in 88. The Good Lord willing, I intend to put other people in my life into the IPA, along with the great mythical players like Roy Hobbs, Crash Davis, Jack Elliott and others from movies and books. You will eventually see them all in my baseball world. I plan on putting all of Duane Decker's Mound City Blue Sox in the league. I used to read Decker's books in study hall at Murphy High School in Mobile, Alabama. The Blue Sox will live again, too. Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-28-2022 at 01:42 PM. |

SS Flipper Bird of the Sugar Valley Rattlers. His name caught my attention. He has led them to a third place, first place and second place finishes in his three seasons. Bird is a .309 hitter lifetime with an average of 115 runs, 34 doubles, 12 triples, 23 home runs, 78 RBIs and 37 stolen bases. 78 RBIs a year in the lead-off spot is pretty darn good. Bird is a solid shortstop with a .978 FA with 451 assists a year, but he is getting better. He had 505 assists this past season. RF Jett Kazmarek of the Valmara Vipers is only 5' 6" and 153 pounds and is a lousy outfielder, but he can flat hit a baseball and run like a gazelle. He hit .428 in 2002 and is a career .358 batter. An average year gives him 214 hits, 120 runs, 43 doubles, 24 triples, 12 home runs, 97 RBIs and 86 stolen bases, including a record 103 stolen bases this season. I think of Babe Herman, who was such a great hitter for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 30s, but was also renowned for his varied misadventures as a defensive player and baserunner, which earned him derision – and eventually affection – among fans. Kazmarek has a poor .952 fielding average and very poor range in the outfield, but makes up for it with his potent bat. Come to think of it, I am kind of partial to the Volusia Vigilantes because they play at "the Jailhouse", the nickname of their home park, Silver River Stadium. Also because they won the first IPA Pro Cup in 2001, led by 2B and playoff MVP Francisco Abreu, who came to them in mid-season via a trade, and pitchers Raul Sandoval and Ricky Moreno. Abreu is a lifetime .254 hitter with 19 homers a season. Abreu always seems to come through with a crucial hit for the V's. Moreno was the closer in the title season with a 5-5 record and 1.76 ERA. He had 26 regular season saves and 5 more in the playoffs. He didn't give up a run in 13 innings in that postseason performance and was 2-0. The last two years he has been a starter and posted a 13-8 mark with a 3.41 ERA in 2002 and 18-12 and 3.43 ERA this past season. Sandoval was 4-1 in the postseason in 2001 with a 1.50 ERA and 18-15 with 3.15 ERA in the regular season. I let the AI control the teams in 2002 and it shipped Sandoval (5-7 3.77 ERA) to the bullpen and made a starter out of Moreno. This year I took over all the league teams and restored Sandoval to a starting slot in July and he responded with a 12-5 record and a 2.49 ERA. Zarek Zalewski of Valmara is another of my favorite because of the double Zs in his name and his great 2001 season. He was 20-7 with a 2.87 ERA. Plus he is a teammate of Jet Kazmarek and also Jan Szymanski, one of the best clutch hitters in the IPA. Szymanski always seemed to be listed in the game write-ups in this Dynasty thread. Szymanski only hits .250 for a career, but averages 26 homers and 104 RBIs a year. In addition he is a fine outfielder in center field. Zalewski slumped since that great first season, going 12-13 with a 4.04 ERA in 2002 and 9-3 and 3.94 this year, mainly as the team's closer. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-10-2009 at 10:27 AM. |

Nice, I love it when people write about a fictional league's or team's and there's somebody in their real life they've put into their league. Who knows maybe when OOTP50 comes out some relative of ours will be putting us into their fictional league, just incase anybody is reading this in 40 years time I'd like to be a catcher

Wednesday, September 24, 2003 2003 IPA Pro Cup Series Tycobbian Union West Division - First Round Series - Second Game Bucs Bump Off Bayview 8-2, Tie Up Series The Bay St. Clair Buccaneers bounced back into the playoff picture with an 8-2 decision over the top-seeded Bayview Vikings to tie up the TU West series at one game apiece. They broke up a close game with three runs in the seventh and four more in the ninth to win going away. Skipper Guy Rondre got a good effort from Duke DeVree, who stymied the Vikings on two runs in seven and one-third innings. DeVree fanned five and walked one before yielding the mound to Norm Gross. The Buc closer got the last five outs for the save. RF Todd Bryant sparked the Buccaneers at bat with three for five, scoring twice and batting in three runs on a ninth-inning homer. 1B George Lyons also had a solo blast and scored twice with two hits. C Jake Singleton was 2-for-3, scored twice and batted in a pair of runs. RF Ed O'Neal had a perfect day for Bayview with four hits including a triple. Frank Wells suffered the loss as Bay St. Claire banged him around for four runs and eight hits in six-plus innings. The Bucs also got the best of Bayview with 12 hits to their 11. The third and deciding game in the series is also slated to be played on the Vikings home field, Downtown Plaza Stadium. The finale will be played tomorrow afternoon. 9th-Inning Rally Saves Reds, Nip Redbirds 5-4 It took a remarkable three-run rally in the last of the ninth to keep the favored Rolling Hills Reds in the TU West playoff hunt. The Reds roared back from a 4-2 deficit to nip the Denton City Redbirds 5-4. A victory by the Redbirds would have eliminated Rolling Hills. Now the best-of-three series is knotted up at a game each with game three tomorrow afternoon at the Midtown Ball Grounds in Rolling Hills. A two-out triple by SS Jamie Meade off reliever Bubba Lear tied the score at 4-4. Then Big Boy Charisa hit a ground ball single past third to win the game. Lear was the loser and gave up three runs in two-thirds of an inning on three hits and two walks in a dismal performance. Rolling Hills closer Stephen Fassaro fared better and got credit for the victory. He relieved starter Roger Davidson in the top of the ninth with the score 4-2 and runners on first and second with two outs. Fassaro got the last out on a ground ball to put a stop to the uprising. Meade paced the Reds with 3-5, two RBIs and scored twice. LF Charisa also chipped in two RBIs and CF Willie Mays Nixon batted in a run. Denton City was led by CF Pat Coniglio with three hits. SS Trevor Tomlinson and 1B Rod MacCormack added two hits apiece in defeat. |

Thursday, September 25, 2003 2003 IPA Pro Cup Series Ruthlandian Union North Division - First Round Series - Third Game Valmara Bumps A's Out of Playoffs, Zalewski Winner Manager J. Samuel Jackson made the right choice today at War Memorial Stadium in Valmara - he chose his aging 36-year-old veteran Zarek Zalewski as his starter in the game three finale of the RU North playoffs and got a solid performance in the 6-4 triumph over the Glasco Athletics. Zalewski pitched a strong eight innings holding Glasco to just two runs. The Athletics got to him in the ninth for a couple of runs, but the Vipers prevailed and will now advance to the IPA Sweet 16 against the Far Mountain Redhawks. Closer Yanni Wlodarczyk came in with the score 6-3 and managed to escape with the save, although under great distress. After giving up a walk and a double and another run, cutting the lead to 6-4, he finally nailed the win with the tying runs on second and third. Zalewski got the win, permitted four runs and eight hits in his eight and two-thirds innings with seven Ks and one walk. Valmara went ahead 3-0 in the first, Glasco tallied two in the third to cut it to 3-2. The Vipers added two more in the sixth and went up 6-2. Leading the Valmara attack were 3B Zoran Belikov with a homer and two RBIs, C Yoshi Motsuzuki with two hits and one run scored and SS Steve Androwski with 2-3, an RBI and a run scored. Glasco's ace Jesse Balfour took the loss, allowing five runs and eight hits in five innings. RF Ox Beauvais knocked in a pair of scores with a third-inning double to lead the A's. |

Thursday, September 25, 2003 2003 IPA Pro Cup Series Ruthlandian Union South Division - First Round Series - Third Game Swift's HR Sends Sunbirds to Sweet 16, Waleska Out Waleska came oh so close to the Sweet 16, but Belair Beach and LF Nicky Swift put a damper on the Westerners playoff party in the bottom of the ninth. Trailing 2-1, the Sunbirds proved the old baseball adage, "It ain't over 'til it's over", when they promptly tied it up on a single by RF Matty McDermott and 3B Dom Corbelli's double off reliever Gary Hill. With two outs Swift went from goat to hero when he swatted a game-winning two-run home run eliminating Waleska and sending Belair Beach into the Sweet 16 round against the St. John Crusaders. Swift allowed the tying score in the seventh when he botched a base hit and let it get past him for a costly error. It was quite a battle between pitchers Buzzy Kennedy of Waleska and Slim Mosley of Belair Beach. Kennedy worked eight strong innings, allowing only one unearned run and seven hits with seven strikeouts and three bases on balls, while Mosley permitted only four hits and one unearned run in seven and one-third innings. Mosley also fanned seven and walked three batters. Johnny Spears pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the win with the loss going to Hill. Sunbird 1B Paul Gravelli led the 10-hit parade with three hits with Corbelli going 2-5 and driving in a run. LF Big Hoss Burkhalter and RF Russ Murphy drove in runs in the Westerners eighth inning to give them a short-lived 2-1 lead. Big Inning Sends SV to Sweet 16, Dumps Marston 6-1 A big four-run fifth inning sent the hometown Sugar Valley Rattlers to the Sweet 16 with a 6-1 win over the Marston Nine at Farmers Memorial Stadium. In the game-breaking inning, SS Flipper Bird broke a 1-1 tie with a single, 1B Ron Armstrong has a two-run single and 3B Jorge Vargas an RBI double to finish off Marston's season. Righthander Bernie Halsey stuck out nine for the victory as he held the Nine to one run and six hits over his six-plus innings. Frankie Jardine notched the save with two and two-thirds scoreless frames with four Ks. Marston's Johnny Paris registered the loss by allowing five runs and seven hits in six innings. Bird led Sugar Valley with three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Armstrong and Vargas had two hits apiece. Sugar Valley will now tangle with the tough Elnora All-Stars in the next round, which will open tomorrow afternoon at the Rattlers home park. Games two and three, if necessary, will be played at State Fair Park in Elnora. The All-Stars are the number one seed and Sugar Valley the second-seed team. Thursday, September 25, 2003 2003 IPA Pro Cup Series Tycobbian Union North Division - First Round Series - Third Game Z's Edge Favored Hellcats 4-3, Head to Sweet 16 The fourth place Luxora Zorros have knocked off the top team in the TU North and are now headed for the Sweet 16. The Z's edged the Hartsdale Hellcats at Pioneer Park 4-3 in twelve innings. Skipper Alejandro Rodrigo got superb pitching from starter Eddie Hoffman and reliever Gustavo Escalora. Hoffman tossed six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and fanned five, while Escalora was brilliant, working six innings and giving up only one unearned run and two hits. Escalora gave up three walks and fanned six batters for the win. Escalora even had a hand in the winning run. He singled off losing pitcher Gene Young with one out in the twelfth, moved up to second on a sac bunt, then scored on RF Cristo Viamonte's two-out base hit. The Zorros collected 12 hits with Viamonte going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Luxora took the lead 1-0 in the first frame on Lacy Tompkins' sacrifice fly. Hartsdale came back with two in the third on RBI singles by SS Jud Turchin and 2B Hoppy Hill. The Z's knotted it up 2-2 on an RBI ground out by RF Joel Reed in the fourth. It stayed that way until the top of the tenth when Luxora SS Rafael Lemos reached base on an error by Hellcat third baseman Whiz Weaver and scored on Viamonte's double. In the bottom half of the inning Hartsdale rallied and tied it at 3-3 when Turchin singled, stole second and went to third on a wild throw by C Otto Kronvath, then came home on 1B Mac Faulkner's fly ball. Turchin and CF Mel Poe led the Hellcats with two hits each. Hartsdale had eight hits in all. Young got the loss as he permitted two runs in his three innings, but only one of them was earned. In the next round Luxora will go up against the Oxford Red Caps, who finished in second place in the regular season standings, but only one game out of first place, tied with the Fairfax Frogs. Game one of the best-of-three series will be in Luxora at De la Vega Stadium. The other two games, if needed, will be played at Winchester Park in Oxford. I had a game crash caused by an electrical outage and will have to replay two games, Ginza-San Alejo and Turon-Cape Coral. I don't know what happened. I have a back-up power supply, but it went on the fritz and didn't give me time to close everything out normally.
I had backed up the league very recently on an external hard drive. I learned my lesson when I totally lost my All-Time All-Star Association about a year ago. I now back up at the end of each day's schedule. I have been saved twice this year by having a very recent back up. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-14-2009 at 05:19 PM. |
