CLAUDE VARNER FW (1929-1947) Overall Rating = 4

Hometown - Bakersfield, California

22(11)-30-5

Varner fought mainly in California from 1929 to 1933 where he had modest success beating Red Goodman and an aging Fidel LaBarba while taking decision losses against Newsboy Brown and Kid Francis. He relocated to Australia in 1934 and remained there aside from a four month stint back in the USA until his retirement from the ring in 1947. While down under, Varner defeated Herb Bishop, Mickey Walker (four times) and Joe Hall. He dropped bouts to Tod Morgan, Jackie Wilson, Chalky Wright, Mike Belloise, Freddie Miller, Everett Rightmire and Darky Blandon among others. Varner was stopped seven times over 57 pro bouts.

Veranis wasn't that bad a fighter. Early success and a less than dedicated work ethic ended his career at an early age. His biggest wins were over Joey Klein and Brighton, MA welter Bob Murphy (1955 Boxing Writers Association Rookie of the Year).

Thank you Jofre:

It can be tough to rate someone who you never saw or have any knowledge of. Looking through his record, Veranis appears to have beaten a string of quite unimpressive fighters and to have quit when he met resistance. Do you have any suggestions for a rating?

Thanks,

Christopher

EMIL UMEK HW (1965-1966) Overall Rating = 1

Hometown - Frankfurt, Germany

7(1)-8-0

The German born Umek fought for almost two years on the U.S. west coast. After dropping his first three bouts, he won a ten round decision over Bowie Adams who was 17-0-1 at the time of their meeting. Besides Adams, Umek's only victories came against rather inexperienced fighters. He was stopped by Joey Orbillo and Steve Grant and lost a ten round decision to LHW Eddie Cotton. Stopped a total of three times.

TOBY TYLER MW (1982-1986, 1990, 2003) Overall Rating = 1

Hometown - St. Paul, Minnesota, USA

7(5)-7-2

Tyler Fought as a Middleweight from 1982 to 1986 losing to Harold Brazier and dropping a bout for the Mid West Regional belt to Krzysztof Golanski. He came back briefly in 1990 to be stopped by James Toney and score a KO win over the well traveled Jerry Strickland. After a 13 year lay-off, he took a bout against cruiserweight Marty Lindquist at the age of 45 in 2003. The first roud TKO loss seems to have sent Toby into retirement for good. Overall, he was stopped six times.

Chris, Veranis was very talented, but unfortunately he just wasn't dedicated enough to get to the next level. Here is what I have on him.
