when i was in cooperstown last year, they were selling the strat-o-matic board game with the cards in the shop. i would think anyone visiting the baseball hall of fame is the perfect target audience for OOTP, so maybe some advertisements in the shop with a tagline of something like "you've just walked through baseball history, now recreate it. play OOTP!" would at least get you a few looks from people. couldn't hurt to give the people who run the hall of fame a call and see what they say.

If you spend more than a minute a day posting to Twitter, you probably are doing something wrong.

Alright, so, I set up a Twitter account for OOTP:

OOTP Baseball (ootpbaseball) on Twitter

Feel free to follow, although admittedly there's not much to follow yet.

OK, so, so far, we've been followed by 3 people:

2 obvious porn spams
1 less-obvious spam? I mean, why would AAF Las Vegas follow us?

Hmmm.

Get the generic logo out and replace with an OOTP X.

Yeah, working on that. I need a good square one, I don't have one handy. I tried a rectangular one, and that didn't work.

I'll get our "graphics expert" on that.

Twitter shouldn't take much more than a few minutes every week, come release day you spend some more time posting little 140 character snippets for people to feed on.

In the mean time, in the little handy dandy search box type in fantasy baseball and anyone who talked about it in the last two days will pop up and you just click follow to all those people and maybe you attract a few each week. Less than 10 minutes, and quick easy exposure!

Facebook takes more time to setup, and each update will take some extra time, but its good in the same way.

For what its worth if you need a part/full time social media marketing web guy, send me a PM I'm looking for a job

Oh, OK, that makes sense! Starting to "get it."

I have a page for Out of the Park Baseball on Facebook now, but oddly, I can't find an easy way to share the link. Any thoughts?

Steve

Alright, what's with the "@blahblah" and "#blahblah"?

I see "#ooptx" out there on Twitter, but I don't know what it means!

The facebook link should be simple assuming its a group page/fan page. You should be able to just post it...I know you all are working on the demo, but the faster it can get out the easier, and telling the followers via a tweet that the demo is available is a great way for people to come visit the site and try the game out. Great work guys! If you have any marketing questions, especially involving social marketing using facebook and twitter please feel free to PM me as I am a Marketing major and am currently employed as the Director of Social Marketing for a company.

Yes it does. And in reference to the Twitter comments, #OOTPX references the fact that OOTPX is being mentioned somewhere and links to your profile. @blah blah is a tweet directed at someone.

Yep! And the nice thing about people becoming fans is that all their friends will see that person x is now a fan of Out of the Park Baseball and have a link to it. Some may check it out, others may not. But thats a lot of free looks for name recognition.

Added you guys!

And what he explained for the # and @ on twitter, if you type @gillis27 its an open direct message basically. There are private direct messages on twitter as well.

But with some little bit of time, and some semi-consistent self promotion you have a low cost media outlet that lots and lots of people will see.

Great thing to try, before you buy adds on fangraphs and mlb trade rumors, etc.

I still don't quite get the # thing.

So, for example, I had this comment posted by the CBU folks:

Quote:
cbu_ootpWelcome @OOTPBaseball to Twitter! Thank you for #OOTPX
Now, the site name for the Twitter account I created is "ootpbaseball" and not "ootpx". So, I can't figure out where the "#OOTPX" comes from.

Do tell?

Steve

Basically when you throw in the pound sign, when you're on twitter it becomes a link to a search for that term. If you click on the #OOTPX you get taken to a real time search of the people that tweeted about OOTPX If you just type OOTPX there's no link to it. So in efforts to garner attention to my league in the OOTP world, I've been using that tag (I'm cbu_ootp) to help start a trend. I don't think we'll ever get to the top 10, but if you ever did, it'd be huge huge huge as millions would click to figure it out what is being talked about.

So that's why certain companies have run contests if you mention their companies keyword. Because if they reach the trending topics the social media world sees it. But if you can get a deal with Ashton Kutcher to endorse it, you'll get tons of attention

Also when working with 140 characters, there's an advantage to typing just OOTPX.

JWay nailed it. Sorry my explanation wasn't clear initially, #something allows you to see who else is referencing that comment. Quite frankly some of twitter's symbols take some time to get a grasp of.

Hmm, I'm torn about the "X" because then when 11 comes out, we've lost the momentum.

Just posted a bunch of OOTP 10 screenshots to the Facebook page. Little by little...

I bought OOTP only a couple days ago, based on this google search:
"baseball game mac"

That brought up several results for OOTP, including the first one (apple games). I do also run windows PCs but my laptop is a mac, just lucky I guess I searched for a mac game because "baseball game PC" doesn't mention OOTP on the first page.

I think it is a HUGE bonus that OOTP will run on windows or linux or mac, I use all three and that's what sealed it for me. That and the good reviews the current version gets. I can't speak for the wider web but I will google for what I'm after, then google for reviews of candidates. If you can increase your google rank for windows folks, and advertise, you should get more purchases.

One of the first rules of business is you have to spend money to make money; and another rule is to advertise. So I say spend money on advertising!
