1966 Baltimore Orioles vs 1936 New York Yankees ![]() 1936 New York Yankees Record: 102-51 Finish: Won World Series over Giants Manager: Joe Mccarthy Team ERA: 4.17 Team AVG: .300 Home Runs: 182 Key Players: Lou Gehrig 1B (.354, 152 RBI), Joe Dimaggio OF (.323, 125 RBI), Red Ruffing P (20-12, 3.85 ERA) One of the best hitting teams that baseball has seen this Yankee side behind Gehrig and rookie Dimaggio batted .300 as a team. Pitching is a bit of a concern with ERA's on the higher side, but often times the game is over early and Yankee hurlers throw without pressure. Add Bill Dickey, Tony Lazzeri, truly a great offensive team 1966 Baltimore Orioles Record: 97-63 Finish: Won World Series over LA Dodgers Manager: Hank Bauer Team ERA: 3.32 Team AVG: .258 Home Runs: 175 Key Players: Frank Robinson OF (49 HR, .316), Boog Powell 1B (34 HR, 109 RBI), Jim Palmer P (15-10, 3.46) A very well balanced team led by the big bats of Robinson, Powell, and Brooks Robinson. This team is also very good defensively and can hold a lead. The pitching is young and not overwhelming but any team that sweeps its way through a World Series needs to be taken seriously. Pitching Mathups Game 1: Dave McNally (13-6, 3.17) vs Red Ruffing (20-12, 3.85) Game 2: Jim Palmer (15-10, 3.46) vs Monte Pearson (19-7, 3.71) Game 3: Steve Barber (10-5, 2.30) vs Lefty Gomez (13-7, 4.39) Last edited by Nick Soulis; 02-28-2010 at 12:07 PM. |

Yanks Take Opener at Stadium ![]() A bottom of the ninth hit with the bases loaded by bench player Jack Saltzgazer ended game one of this series in what was a tight contest. With the Yankees leading 2-1 in the 6th inning Frank Robinson did what he does best and towered a shot out of the part for a three run home run giving the Orioles a 4-2 lead. Anothe run in the 7th gave the visitors what they thought was a comfortable three run advanatge. Roy Johnson gathered a two run single to cut the lead to one run and then catcher Bill Dickey flared a single to left that allowed the tying ru to score. Bill Short couldnt hold off the Yanks out of the bullpen. The game raced into the 9th as Red Ruffing battled the best he could, even though he didnt have his best stuff. In the 9th the Yankees scored the winner and a good confidence building win. The Birds could be concerned as they dropped this one without the big Yankee boppers having big games. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 36 Yankees lead series 1-0

Yanks Mistake Free; Thinking Sweep ![]() Game 2 of this big series goes to the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees come back again to topple the Orioles who wasted an 11 strike out performance from the young Jim Palmer. Again the Birds took the early lead as Luis Aparicio hammered a double in the second inning off of Monte Pearson for two runs. Joe Dimaggio hit a solo shot in the 4th but going into the 6th inning the Orioles held a 3-1. In the 6th the Yankees turned up the heat again, this is what great teams do. The Yanks loaded the bases and Palmer felt the pressure walking in a run and then letting up an RBI single to Red Rolfe. The Yanks scored three runs in the frame and went away with the lead. The Yankee bullpen then closed the door and New York took the first two games of the series by playing smart and timely baseball. The Orioles will be fighting for their lives going to Baltimore for Game 3. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 36 Yankees lead series 2-0

GEHRIG DRIVES IN 7! YANKS WITH HISTORIC WIN ![]() In an incredible afternnon at Memorial Stadium the 1936 New York Yankees dominated the 66 Orioles so badly that one could harly believe it. The Yankees beat the Orioles 16-0! Yes sixteen runs on 20 hits in a game that was never close and looked like a game between a little league team and a pro one. The star of the evening definately was Lou Gehrig who had a historic day. Gehrig went 6 for 6 and drove in 7 runs which could be considered records on their own as few have done this in the history of the game. Gehrig hit a two run home run in the 4th inning to start the parade and the runs and humiliation for the Orioles never stopped. Oriole starter Steve Barber let up 9 runs in 4 innings and couldnt match Lefty Gomez the Yankees starter who looked like his great old young self. Gomez handcuffed the home side on a three hit shutout complete game. "It was incredible to watch them hit" said Brooke Robinso after the loss, "I really cant see anyone getting these guys out." Gehrig simply may be the greatest hitter that ever was. So the 1936 Yankees move on as the only team to complete a sweep and move on. And the way they did it was massively impressive. The box score speaks for itself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 36 Yankees win series 3-0

1909 Detroit Tigers vs 1998 New York Yankees ![]() ![]() 1998 New York Yankees
Record: 114-48 Finish: Won World Series over San Diego Manager: Joe Torre Team ERA: 3.82 Team AVG: .288 Home Runs: 207 Key Players: Mariano Rivera RP (1.91 ERA, 36 saves), Derek Jeter SS (.324, 203 hits), Tino Martinez 1B (.281, 123 RBI) This team has already been argued as one of the best teams of all time. Their 114 wins and domminance in the post season came in the very middle of their dynasty run. Many stars like Jeter, Rivera, Posada, and Pettite are at the prime of th career. This team can beat you in so many ways, and when the game is on the line late, Mariano Rivera is the best there ever was. 1909 Detroit Tigers Record: 98-54 Finish: Won AL Pennant; lost to Pirates in World Series Manager: Hughie Jennings Team ERA: 2.26 Team AVG: .267 Home Runs: 19 Key Players: Ty Cobb OF (.377, 107 RBI), Sam Crawford OF (.314, 35 2B), George Mullin SP (29-8, 2.22) The headliner here is of course the talent of Ty Cobb, who may just have been the best hitter to ever step on a field. Still this team had an incredible pitching staff with a team ERA under 2.30. No one will play harder then this Tiger team and Cobb is usually out for blood; this team likes to run too with 280 stolen bases. Pitching matchups Game 1: George Mullin (29-8, 2.22) vs Andy Pettite (16-11, 4.24) Game 2: Ed Willett (21-10, 2.34) vs David Wells (18-4, 3.49) Game 3: Ed Killian (11-9, 1.71) vs David Cone (20-7, 3.55) |

YANKS CONTROL GAME 1 ![]() With the stern leadership of Ty Cobb the 09 Tigers paid a visit to Andy Pettite and the 98 Yankees. Despite the grit it was the Yankees who won the opening game 5-2 and have comfirmed to many early on just how good they are going to be .
The Yankees in front of a full house the booed Ty Cobb in his fist at bat, put 5 on the board against George Mullin. Mullin didnt make it out of the first inning as he just didnt have his stuff walking 2 and allowing 7 of the first 9 batters to get on base. Two triples in the first inning, one by Tino Martinez and the other by Jorge Posada drove in 3 of the 5 runs, and Andy Pettite had what he needed to control the Tigers the rest of the way. The Tigers actually settled down after the rough first inning and through the arm of Ed Killian didnt allow the Bombers to score another run on the night, Detroit even outhit the home side 13-9. But Pettite was very good and did the job of getting the ball to Mariano Rivera who closed the door as expected even though he let up 2 hits in the ninth. Mr. Cobb went 1 for 4 with a walk and wasnt the world beater he needed to be, but there is always tomorrow and game 2. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 98 Yankees lead series 1-0

HERE COME THE TIGERS; TIE SERIES ![]() One can only guess what Ty Cobb said to his team before they took the field in game 2. The Tigers responded and beat the Yanks for a crucial win to tie the series and take the time machine back to Detroit for game 3 of an even series. Cobb had a strong game going 3-5 including a triple and a run but the star of the game was Sam Crawford who went 3-5 with 4 RBI. The game was tight as Ed Willett and David Wells looked good early. Tied at 2 runs a piece the Tigers knocked in two in the top of the eighth to knock out Ramiro Mendoza and then added agood three more runs to put the Yankees away. Detroit pounded out 17 hits in this game and have 30 hits in two games. The series may be much more difficult for the Yanks who have their hands full and turn to David Cone heading into the crucial game 3. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 Series tied at 1

Yanks Take Control Again ![]() David Cone took the ball with confidence in game 3 of this best of 5 series and gave the 98 Yankees an important win by a margin of 5-2 at Bennett Park over the Tigers. New York came out strong early against a very average Ed Summers and put 4 runs on the board in the very first two innigs, Bernie Williams drove in two on two hits. Cone ended up going 8 strong striking out 7 before giving way to Mo Rivera who struggled a bit in the ninth but closed the door for the second time in the series. This time Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb combined for only one hit in 8 at bats and in a series like this know they have to produce each and every time out if they are to pull the upset. The Yankees are the heavy favorites and played like it today barely breaking a sweat behind a strong start by Cone. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 98 Yankees lead series 2-1

YANKEES FLEX MUSCLE; TAKE SERIES ![]() Another strong pitching performance, this time by Cuban rookie Orlando Hernandez allowed the 98 Yankees to win the series over the 09 Tigers, three games to one. It is always someone who steps it seems like for the Yankees and on this clinching day it was Jorge Posada. The catcher hammered a fastball in the 4th inning close to 430 feet for a three run home run breaking open a close game. Hernandez confused the Tigers with his delivery and other then a Ty Cobb RBI in the 8th, was almost flawless. The Yankees as a whole controlled the Hall of Fame Tigers to only 6 hits in 4 games. Mariano Rivera saved his third game of the series, and always seems to be on the mound when the Yanks clinch. This 1998 team lived up to all the hype and in many peoples eyes beat a great team and didnt even play at their very best. The defense and pitching for New York however was dynasty like. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 98 Yankees win seires 3-1

1987 St. Louis Cardinals vs 2001 Arizona Diamond Backs ![]() 1987 St. Louis Cardinals Record: 95-67 Finish: Won NL Pennant; lost World Series to Minnesota Manager: Whitey Herzog Team ERA: 3.91 Team AVG: .263 Home Runs: 94 Key Players: Jack Clark 1B (35 HR, 106 RBI), Vince Coleman (109 SB, 121 R), Todd Worrell RP (33 S, 2.66) A team almost exclusively built on speed and defense this Cardinals team were one of the last true small ball teams. The team stole 248 bases led by the incredible Vince Coleman. Truly the pitching staff wasnt magnificent but just adequete. The Cardinals also had a Wizard at shortstop who always seemed to get the big hit. 2001 Arizona Diamond Backs Record: 92-70 Finish: Won World Series over Yankees Manager: Bob Brenly Team ERA: 3.87 Team AVG: .267 Home Runs: 208 Key Players: Randy Johnson SP (21-6, 2.49), Luis Gonzelez (57 HR, .325), Curt Schilling (22-6, 2.98) Maybe the toughest team in history to face in a short series, teams cant really compete with the 43 win doo of Johnson and Schilling. The bullpen is a bit suspect, but often times not even needed. Luis Gonzelez had a remarkable season and the team defense was actually very good. Pitching matchups Game 1: Danny Cox (11-9, 3.88 ERA) vs Randy Johnson (21-6, 2.49) Game 2: Greg Mathews (11-11, 3.73) vs Curt Schilling (22-6, 2.98) Game 3: Bob Forsch (11-7, 4.32) vs Brian Anderson (4-9, 5.20) |

The Big Unit Delivers Game 1 Win Randy Johnson was his same old dominant self taking the mound in Game 1 of this best of seven victory for the Diamond Backs. Johnson knew the key was to keep the quick Cardinal runners off the basebaths, and that hie did allowing only 4 hits and one run in the 3-1 victory. Danny Cox had a good game for the Cardinals as well but the home side grew in confidence after Mark Grace and Damian Miller gave the Snakes a 2-0 lead going into the middle innings. In many ways the game went exactly as everyone thought it would, now Curt Schilling is set to take his turn. A bitter pill to face after Johnson. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 01 Diamond Backs lead series 1-0

SNAKES LEAVE ARIZONA UP TWO ![]() Arizona takes a very close game 2 in Arizona thanks to a 8th inning RBI single
by Junior Spivey to take a commanding 2-0 game lead against the 87 Cardinals. The 5-4 victory was a back and forth battle with 24 hits and deep strategy by both mangers, but in the end the game came down to the 9th inning with Byun King on the mound and the tying run on second base with two outs. Terry Pendelton smashed a ball to Toy Womak who made a nice play and ended the game. Curt Schilling wasnt spectacular even though he cruised through the first 4 innings. Curt Ford had tied the game in the top of the 8th before Sprivey reclaimed the lead. Both teams combined for 24 hits with the only long ball going to Matt Williams who hit a solo shot. Now St. Louis faces a very tough road and needs to win three in a row to move on. But they do get a break as they wont be facing anyone named Johnson or Schilling in game 3. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 DBacks lead series 2-0

AS EASY AS 1-2-3 SNAKES ADVANCE ![]() Easier then most experts thought the 01 Diamond backs went into Busch Stadium and won easiy against the Cardinals 9-1 to sweep this series and stake their claim as one of baseball's elite.
Brain Anderson the young Diamond Back lefty was tired of hearing about the other starters on the Arizona staff and took it upon himself to pitch a magnificent game and baffle the Red Birds. Anderson went the distance, and even though he had no strke outs, he was as in control as his more famous teamates. Damian Miller tripled to right with two men on in the 3rd inning as the DBacks scored 4 times to take a commanding 7-0 lead off a rattled Bob Forsch, many thought young Joe Magrane should have gotten the start instead. But Whitey's Cardinals never got started in this series. Mark Grace added two doubles and Tony Womak continued his excellent play ontop of the lineup. A sweep as easy as pie. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 01 Arizona sweeps series 3-0

1944 St. Louis Cardinals vs 1917 Chicago White Sox 1917 Chicago White Sox
Record: 100-54 Finish: Won World Series over NY Giants Manager: Pants Rowland Team ERA: 2.16 Team AVG: .253 Home Runs: 19 Key Players: Joe Jackson OF (.301, 75 RBI), Eddie Cicotte P (28-12, 1.53), Eddie Collins (.289, 53 SB) Two years prior to the famous Black Sox scandel this team won it outright in 1917 doing it with incredible pitching. The teams 2.16 ERA is remarkable and is headed by Eddie Cicotte who let up 59 earned runs all season. Shoeless Joe Jackson didnt have a particularly super season, but is the only appearance for the legend in this tournament. 1944 St. Louis Cardinals Record: 105-49 Finish: Won World Series over St. Louis Browns Manager: Billy Southworth Team ERA: 2.67 Team AVG: .275 Home Runs: 100 Key Players: Stan Musial OF (.347, 94 RBI), Mort Cooper P (22-7, 2.46), Ray Sanders (.295, 102 RBI) During the war years albeit this team put together one of the strongest season's ever winning 105 games and doing it as a team without any real roster of superstars. The Pitching is very good and Stan Musial was up and coming towards his prime. Game Starters Game 1: Eddie Cicotte (28-12, 1.53 ERA) vs Mort Cooper (22-7, 2.46) Game 2: Red Faber (16-13, 1.92) vs Max Lanier (17-12, 2.65) Game 3: Lefty Williams (17-8, 2.97) vs Ted Wilks (17-4, 2.64) |

Bad Blood in Game 1 Win for Sox ![]() As expected a pitcher's duel played out in the opening game of the series between the White Sox and Cardinals. A game that was full of inside pitching and hard sliding bewteen these two champions.
It all started when Happy Felsch of the Sox smoked the first pitch of the series over the left field wall and took his time going around the bases. With the Sox up by two, Stan Musial then towered a long shot of his own to cut the lead to one. In the 5th inning Johnny Hopp of the Cardinals went in hard on a steal attempt and took Swede Risberg out. Both players had words for eachother and had to be seperated as benches cleared. The man of the night what Easy Eddie Cicotte however. Other then the Musial home run Cicotte was brilliant going the distance and out dueling Mort Cooper who was strong throughout as well. The White Sox take the vital opening road win, and be sure that both sides will leave it all on the line going forward. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 17 Sox lead series 1-0

Cardinals Smack Sox To Tie Series ![]() The 1944 St. Louis Cardinals were in no moode to fall behind by two games and leave Sportsman Park without a win. They rallied behind Max Lanier to win Game 2 by a comfortable score of 9-2.
A five run 4th inning was the last scoring of the game and the big blow of the inning was a 2 run double by Danny Whtliner. Stan Musiel also drove in two and the White Sox were conceding this game. Joe Jackson went 3-4 and the Sox did get 10 hits on the day, but Lanier used his entire arsenal and competed the second consecutive complete game for the Red Birds. Now the Series goes to Comiskey Park, and the feeling by anyone who has seen the first two games is that this one is almost sure to go the full 5 games. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 Series tied at 1

ONE SWING AND A WIN ![]() In a classic pitching duel at Comiskey Park where neither pitcher deserved to lose the game, it was a solo home run in the 7th inning by Danny Litwhiler gave the game to the 1944 Cardinals who take the lead in the series.
Both Lefty Williams and Ted Wilks went the distance and kept their opoonents off balance, battling through jams and showing grit and resolve for their teams. Great defense by the Cardinals helped their cause as the White Sox had only 7 base runners on the day. On the other side the Cardinals stranded 23 runners but actually scored their run with no one on base. Tough luck starter Left Williams really deserved better, but his offense couldnt get it done. White Sox Wont Go Away ![]() Swede Risberg lofted a sacrafice fly in the 10th inning to score Neimo Leibold and end a low socring competitive affair. The White Sox tie the series with the 2-1 win and now the series goes to the decider in St, Louis for advancement; is anyone really suprized?
Harry Brecheen and Reb Russell were better then everyone thought they would be in this match but there was no backing down in this one, as both men went the distance into the 10th inning. A scoreless tie in the 8th inning but a wild pitch gave the Cardinals the one run lead that looked like it just might give them the series. With 2 outs in the bottom of the inning Happy Felsch singled to right past a diving first baseman to tie the match and off to extra innings we went. It would be hard two find two teams that are more evenly matched and that want it more then these two, but now only one will advance. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 Series tied at 2
