NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Saturday, October 2nd, 1880:
Scouts have begun to salivate. The list of players for the first-year player draft has been released by the league office and speculation is already beginning about who will end up as the first pick. The list has been posted under the transaction section of the BNN site and will be there for the next 30 days leading up to draft day.

Teams now have a chance to scout the draft pool 30 days before the draft is held.

The top players available (in no particular order) seem to be:
1. Fred Lewis, 21 year-old center fielder out of college.
2. Jim Whitney, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college.

Thursday, October 7th, 1880: The 1880 American League batting title went to Roger Connor. A key contributor for St. Louis this year, he hit .328. His 84 hits included 13 doubles, 7 triples and 3 home runs. The Brown Stockings first baseman also scored 39 runs and knocked in 47 while playing in 77 games.

NABL News: Playoffs begin
Thursday, October 7th, 1880: What began months ago as a dream is now reality. The trade deadline has passed, along with all the GMs' wheeling and dealing. Contract negotiations are on hold until another time. Front office work is all but on the back burner. Now it's time for each club, player, coach and manager to put a unique imprint on North American BaseBall League history. Nobody will remember the free agent who got away last winter. No one will care about the trade that fell through right before the deadline. People will remember just one thing about the playoffs -- the team that wins the Round 1 crown. Saturday, October 16th, 1880: The Cincinnati Reds concluded the season in grand fashion -- they won the North American BaseBall League Round 1. They nailed it down at Sportsman's Park I by whipping the St. Louis Brown Stockings 4-1 to win it all. They took the series 4-3.

Their motto for the season was "Win or Die Trying."

"They never let up and they never stopped trying the whole season," the Reds manager proudly told reporters. "They hustled and fought the whole season and it continued in the playoffs. They are a very special bunch of guys."

To get their 2nd league crown, the Reds finished the regular season in the National League with a 47-37 record, ending up in first place in the division standings.

Boston's Wiedman Wins Newcomer Award
Friday, October 29th, 1880: The Red Caps have much to be proud of as one of their own, Stump Wiedman, netted the National League Newcomer of the Year Award today.

The Boston starter crafted a 19-8 won-lost mark in his first year, relying on his own talent, a good pitching coach and a solid 1.92 ERA to bring home the trophy. In 28 starts and 248 innings, Wiedman yielded 248 hits and struck out 67, while holding opposing teams to a .254 average.

Richmond Is This Year's Premier Rookie
Friday, October 29th, 1880: Lee Richmond's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Philadelphia Athletics and today he walked away with the 1880 American League Newcomer of the Year Award.

The 23-year-old starter registered a 29-28 record this season in 59 starts. Over 495.1 innings he gave up 517 hits, struck out 247 and issued 49 walks as he held the opposition to a .254 batting average and fashioned a 2.03 ERA.

Philadelphia's Richmond Elbows His Way to AL Award
Sunday, October 31st, 1880: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1880 has been presented and the American League winner is Lee Richmond of Philadelphia.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Richmond. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Athletics star told reporters.

Richmond excelled with an impressive 29-28 record in 59 starts. In 495.1 innings he yielded 517 hits and 49 walks, while striking out 247 and compiling a fine 2.03 ERA.

Red Stockings Ace NL's Best Pitcher
Sunday, October 31st, 1880: He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Jim Britt performed like a veteran on the hill for the Cincinnati Red Stockings and walked away with the National League Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process.

The 24-year-old Red Stockings star fashioned a 22-15 won-loss record in 1880 with a 1.51 ERA. In 339.2 innings of work and 40 starts, Britt struck out 189 while giving up 324 hits and 41 walks. He held opposing batters to a .238 average.

NL Announces Top Batter Award
Monday, November 1st, 1880:
1880 was a very good year for Cincinnati Red Stockings catcher King Kelly, this season's National League Outstanding Hitter Award recipient.

Kelly hit .335 with a .370 on-base percentage. He had 122 hits, 23 doubles, 8 triples, 1 home run, 45 RBIs and scored 64 runs.

AL Announces Best Batter Award
Monday, November 1st, 1880: When it came to hitting the baseball, Dan Brouthers had few peers in the American League this year. The gifted first baseman for Philadelphia tagged opposing pitchers for a .306 average and was voted the Outstanding Hitter Award for 1880. Included in his season stats were 105 hits, 25 doubles, 12 triples, 4 home runs, 63 runs scored and 45 RBIs.

Trade: Remsen for Connell
Friday, November 26th, 1880: The Brooklyn Atlantics have released a statement confirming the trade of 30-year-old center fielder Jack Remsen to the Philadelphia Athletics for 25-year-old catcher Terry Connell. The deal was finalized today.

His career numbers show Remsen is currently carrying a .255 lifetime batting average with 4 home runs and 217 RBIs.

His all-time numbers show Connell has compiled a .297 batting average and collected 269 hits, 2 home runs and 128 RBIs.

AL's Top Pitcher in April Is Richmond
Sunday, May 1st, 1881: In April, Lee Richmond tore through the American League like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 23 years old.

The young Philadelphia starter posted a 5-4 mark and an ERA of 2.46 to earn the Pitcher of the Month award. In 84 innings he collected 39 strikeouts while limiting the opposition to a .251 average.



AL Batter of the Month Honors to Brouthers
Sunday, May 1st, 1881: When Dan Brouthers stepped up to the plate in April, he did it with confidence and today he was honored with the American League Batter of the Month award.

The young Philadelphia first baseman posted a .365 batting average with 1 home run, 11 RBIs and scored 8 runs. Brouthers also worked pitchers for 8 walks to post a .443 on-base percentage.

Wednesday, 5/11 1881: Philadelphia fans will be disappointed to learn that Charlie Eden suffered a hamstring strain while making a defensive play in today's game. After the doctor informed the Philadelphia Athletics manager that Eden was expected to miss 2-3 months, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the right fielder could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

Wednesday, May 25th, 1881: John Richmond didn't like the strike call, turned around and had some angry words with the home plate umpire. Apparently he went too far. The result is a 6-game suspension by the league office. The league cited his failure to leave the dugout after the ejection was the reason for the suspension.

Veteran Re-Signs with Athletics
Saturday, June 4th, 1881: Athletics fans were divided today as Philadelphia confirmed that the front office has signed Levi Meyerle to a 2-year extension at a rate of $606 per year.

While many were enthusiastically behind the signing, others worried about Meyerle's age.

This season Meyerle is batting .280 with 35 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 18 times and has 17 runs batted in.

Friday, July 1st, 1881: 5 hits in a game doesn't happen every day. Cincinnati's Herman Dehlman had a very special day against the Atlantics when everything came together for him and he did just that -- collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats -- and led the Cincinnati Red Stockings to a 7-5 win at Washington Park I.

Blues Hurler Reaches Milestone
Monday, August 1st, 1881: Bill Stearns of the Cleveland Blues nailed down his 200th career victory with a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Brown Stockings today at Kennard Street Park. Stearns, 28, fired no strikeouts over 9 innings of work. He gave up 2 runs, 1 walk and allowed 4 hits.

"I feel great," Stearns said afterward. "I try not to get caught up in the moment. It's hard with so much press coverage these days, but I tune all that out when I go out there and pitch."

Since his debut, Stearns has marked up 200 wins and 157 losses and fashioned an ERA of 2.28. He has fanned 534 batters while pitching 3101.2 innings.

Monday, September 26th, 1881: Brooklyn fans will be disappointed to learn that Pete Curren suffered a fractured elbow while making a defensive play in today's game. After the doctor informed the Brooklyn Atlantics manager that Curren was expected to miss 4-5 months, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the right fielder could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

NABL News: Draft Pool Revealed
Sunday, October 2nd, 1881: Earlier today, the NABL released its amateur draft pool, sending organizations into a flurry of action. For the next 30 days, scouts will be trying to gauge as many players as they can, hoping to get a true sense of the character, ability and passion of these young men with professional baseball aspirations.

The league has created a special Draft Area on the transactions page, which will be available for 30 days prior to draft day.

Friday, October 7th, 1881: Few men in baseball history have won the pitching triple crown. Lee Richmond of the Philadelphia Athletics joined this elite company today when the season ended, officially making him the league leader in ERA, K's and wins.

Richmond put up a 26-26 record, an ERA of 1.78 and 249 strikeouts this season. He started 56 times, walked 79 and held opposing clubs to a .248 average.

Richmond is the odds-on favorite to capture the Outstanding Pitcher Award this year.

John O'Rourke Wins 1881 AL Batting Crown
Friday, October 7th, 1881: And the Winner is... John O'Rourke.
The 1881 American League batting race was won by the Cleveland center fielder. O'Rourke topped the batting chart with a .317 average. For the season, he cranked out 78 hits, 3 home runs, scored 45 times and batted in 35.

Swartwood of Boston Earns NL Batting Crown
Friday, October 7th, 1881: The 1881 National League batting champion is Ed Swartwood of the Boston Red Caps. He just closed out an impressive season with a .326 average. His consistency at the plate was a prime reason the 22-year-old center fielder beat out the competition. A slump was a rare occurence for him. Playing in 74 games, Swartwood contributed 95 hits, no home runs and 27 RBIs to the Red Caps attack.

Monday, October 31st, 1881: The Cincinnati Red Stockings have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making.
It's Will White, this year's National League Outstanding Pitcher Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance.

White compiled a 22-19 record in 42 starts, tallied 145 strikeouts in 338.1 innings and recorded a 1.73 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .252 batting average against him.

Outstanding Pitcher Award Goes to Richmond
Monday, October 31st, 1881: He's in the early phase of his career, but this past season Lee Richmond performed like a veteran on the hill for the Philadelphia Athletics and walked away with the American League Outstanding Pitcher Award in the process.

The 24-year-old Athletics star fashioned a 26-26 won-loss record in 1881 with a 1.78 ERA. In 465 innings of work and 56 starts, Richmond struck out 249 while giving up 471 hits and 79 walks. He held opposing batters to a .248 average.

Kelly Chosen 1881 NL Outstanding Hitter Award
Tuesday, November 1st, 1881: King Kelly really stood out with the bat in the National League this year as he put together a .315 batting average. Today he was named the winner of the coveted 1881 Outstanding Hitter Award.

After the doctor informed the Philadelphia Athletics manager that Brown was expected to miss 4 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the center fielder could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.

"While we are disappointed Jimmy will not be playing for us next year, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and the way he went about this decision," said the St. Louis general manager.

In his 529-game career Wood is batting .245 with 85 doubles, 43 triples, 6 home runs and 250 RBIs. He has stolen 192 bases and scored 413 times.

Friday, June 30th, 1882: Washington's Joe Ellick brought his "A game" to the park, shutting down and shutting out the Boston Americans 8-0. He racked up 3 strikeouts, surrendered 2 hits and issued no walks on his way to the victory.

Friday, June 30th, 1882: It was a long day at the plate for the Brooklyn Atlantics. They never did figure out Jack Neagle and were shut out 2-0. Mike Moynahan Sidelined for 4 Months
Tuesday, July 4th, 1882: The Detroit Wolverines were dealt a severe blow when Mike Moynahan was hurt running the bases recently in a game against the Boston Americans. After the game, the team trainer reported Moynahan might have to spend a lengthy time on the disabled list. Today doctors confirmed it, ruling the 25-year-old shortstop out for the rest of the season with a broken bone in the elbow. They indicated it would take Moynahan at least 4 months to heal.

Tuesday, July 25th, 1882: "This is why we play the game," commented Louisville's manager after his club captured their 1st Round 1 crown by whipping the Boston Red Caps 15-5 today at Eclipse Park I.

"Baseball don't get any better than this."

The Eclipse were victorious 4-2 in the series after completing the regular season 53-31 and finishing in first place in the American League.

The losing manager had his say, too, telling reporters, "Despite the loss, this year has been a pretty good story, a doggone good story. I'm proud of my guys. We had great veteran leadership and we had players that never gave up -- no quit in us at all. And it got us here. And I'm proud of that. I think you might see the Red Caps back here soon."

MVP was Roger Connor .519 8 RBIs.

American League Honors Detroit's McGinnis
Monday, August 7th, 1882: Jumbo McGinnis of the Detroit Wolverines became a fan favorite over the course of the 1882 campaign. The phenomenal rookie racked up a 18-24 record as he reeled in the American League Newcomer of the Year Award.

In 42 starts, he tallied 343.1 innings, 118 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.97.

McGinnis is 28 years old and appears to be the real deal. Bigger and better things could be in store for him in the coming years.

1882 NL Best Newcomer Named
Monday, August 7th, 1882: Hugh Daily was pure poison to National League hitters this year. The Pittsburg Alleghenys felt very secure when they sent him out to the hill. The 35-year-old starter went after National League hitters with a vengeance and earned the 1882 Newcomer of the Year Award.

His skipper said to reporters, "I wish I had three more like him. He might be inexperienced, but he flat out can pitch."

In 42 starts he went 19-21 with a 1.49 ERA as he struck out 181 in 337.2 innings.

Beaneaters Ace NL's Best Pitcher
Wednesday, August 9th, 1882: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1882 has been presented and the National League winner is Stump Wiedman of Boston.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Wiedman. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Beaneaters star told reporters.

Wiedman excelled with an impressive 27-12 record in 42 starts. In 371.1 innings he yielded 306 hits and 24 walks, while striking out 113 and compiling a fine 1.24 ERA.

Ward Tops American League Pitchers
Wednesday, August 9th, 1882: 22-year-old John Ward of the Louisville Eclipse put together a good year in 1882 for such a young player. Ward was named today as the winner of the American League Outstanding Pitcher Award.

Ward crafted an impressive 23-14 record and a 1.63 ERA. In 319.2 innings he allowed 290 hits, struck out 144, and walked 24.

Swartwood NL's Top Hitter for 1882
Thursday, August 10th, 1882: 1882 was a very good year for Boston Beaneaters center fielder Ed Swartwood, this year's National League Outstanding Hitter Award recipient.

Swartwood had an impressive season, hitting .319 with a .403 on-base percentage. He totaled 105 hits, 13 doubles, 6 triples, 5 home runs, 38 RBIs and scored 64 runs.

Friday, April 6th, 1883: It turns out that St. Louis's Bill Wise needed little run support to beat Chicago today 3-0 at Sportsman's Park I. In a solid outing Wise recorded 8 strikeouts and no walks as he held the White Stockings to 5 hits and shut them out.

Wednesday, April 18th, 1883: It was a dismal game for the White Sox with Ed Cushman on the hill. The Cleveland starter was in top form and made it a long day for Chicago with a 4-0 shutout. He surrendered a total of 3 hits and piled up 14 strikeouts to pick up the win in a route-going effort.
