Week 6

SUBJECT: WEEK 6 NOTES
SCHEDULE:
3 @ Brooklyn
OFF DAY
3 vs Alaska

RESULTS:
  • 5/8: FLA 7 BRK 5 4 run 9th turns a 5-3 deficit into a win. Benoit SV (10) Pergande 3-4 2 RBI Figueroa HR (5)
  • Omari Bethea 3-4 HR (5) 3 RBI
  • Minnesota RF Brendan Dullinger went 5-5 in a 9-3 win over Las Vegas.
  • Farmington was beaten 11-10 by Chesapeake and in the game, Esteban Cobos went 3-5 to extend his streak to 43
  • Denvers Ben Austin punched out a season-high 16 in a 9-1 win over Detroit. He's 4-1 3.83 with 63 K's in 42.1 IP
  • In a Class A game today the Bethel Falcons beat the Haileah River Sharks 18-8. In the game, the Falcons 4 and 5 hitters combined to go 8-9 with 6 HR. Both guys hit 3 each. They scored 7 and drove in 10.

    LUIS MORA SCOUTING REPORT
20-year-old RF Eric Barros is in his Jr year for the California Golden Bears. A 6'2” 195 pounder his bat is one of the top college bats in the draft. He's got a 30+ HR 50-60 XBH potential. He's a below average runner but looks to be an above-average defender with a cannon for an arm. He crushes right-handed pitching but struggles versus lefties. If he can't seem to improve it could force him into a R/L platoon role. That right there makes me take this kid out of the first round. Certainly not a #1 overall pick. He's a 3* ceiling guy in my opinion.

  • 5/9: BRK 2 FLA 1 Geoff Gilmore commits a walk-off error to break 1-1 in the bottom of the 9th Agresta 8 IP 9 K 2 H 4 BB 2 ER
  • AA Corvalis staff put the collar on Esteban Cobos as he went 0-4 to end his record 43 game hitting streak.

    LUIS MORA SCOUTING REPORT
Ismael Saldana is the best bat in the draft. A senior at Texas Tech and having another monster season. He's a 1st baseman and a good one, but can also play left and right and has a cannon. He has the potential to be an offensive force all his own. Runs well. I think he's ready for AA now, maybe even AAA, his bat is that far along. The 22-year-old is going to anchor someone's lineup. He's an A- for me. I have his ceiling at 3* but that's being modest and cautious. There are two 'drawbacks'. He cannot hit LHP for his life and our park favors the RH power bat. Another lefty who may have to platoon to get the most out of him.

  • 5/10: BRK 8 FLA 4 Pen blows 4-3 lead giving up 5 in the 8th.
  • San Antonio lefty Curt Hanning beat Pittsburgh 5-0 today. He punched out 12 to move to 3-2 4.56 and has 64 K's in 51.1 IP this year. Hanning was acquired from New England this winter in a deal that sent 26-year-old 1B Troy Tulowitzki to the Minutemen.
  • Memphis SP Seb Broomhall will miss the remainder of the year after having surgery to remove bone chips.

    MANAGERS OFFICE
The lineup feels 'off'. There are some guys struggling and the need to rearrange both are pressing. After much discussion and deep diving into the numbers here are the new lineups for the rest of this week. It should be noted that Geoff Gilmore's BABIP is .160 and Hayashi's is .189. I absolutely expect some regression to the mean. Likewise, Luis Figueroa is living life right with a BABIP of .410.

    LUIS MORA SCOUTING REPORT
Jonathan Claypool is a left hander out of Illinois. He's currently 5-4 2.95 with 98 K 10 BB in 76.1 IP. Kid sits low 90's with 3 + pitches. His pure stuff is AA ready now. Still needs innings though. His change up and split are going to be ++ pitches. Shuts down the running game exceptionally well. FWIW he placed 3rd in the NCAA AD Pitcher of the year last year. He will definitely go in the 1st round and if I had any concerns it would be that all of this talent is packaged in a 5'10” frame. He's 22 so I don't know if there's much left growth wise. He competes like hell but I don't know if we're looking at a 200+ IP guy or not. I give him a 2.5* ceiling today and a draft grade of B+

Week 8

SUBJECT: WEEK 8 NOTES
SCEHDULE:
2 @ Las Vegas (33-13 +1)
OFF DAY
3 vs Detroit (29-17 +2)
1 vs Chicago (25-21 +2)

Interesting week. All 6 games are vs the 3 first place clubs in the AL. I am seriously shocked and excited that we're 8 games above .500 with the #1 defense in the AL the 2nd best starting ERA and the 3rd best bullpen. All the pitching stuff surprises me but in a good way. The offense has been a bit of a disappointment with the horrid start by Foggie, Hayashi and the trade of Grider..

RESULTS:
  • 5/22: FLA 12 LV 1 Barranco 4-4 3B HR 3 R 2 RBI Hayashi 2-3 3 BB 2 HR 5 RBI Klatt 3-5 2 2B Camp W (4-3) 8 IP 7 H 5 K 1 ER

RUNS GIVEN UP: 229 2nd
DEFENSE: .714 1st
OWNER MOOD: Upset (52/100)

POWER RANKINGS
1) San Francisco 136.5 back on top
2) Las Vegas 136.1
3) Alaska 135.1

I was not expecting a 5-1 week with that schedule. Ever game was vs a team ahead of us in the power rankings. Maybe we are legitimate contenders for something?

    GENERAL MANAGERS OFFICE
Tim Agresta's agent phoned today. Apparent the 31-year-old would like an extension. He's pitching better than he ever has except that his strikeout rate continues to decline. This all popped into my head as I questioned the 'ask' They wanted a 1-year 825K deal. I tried to hide the giggle. I would think about it and get back to them.
I phoned back about 2 hours later, left an offer of 625K, bonuses for 200IP (which he's never done) All-star and Koufax awards, all big dollar stuff. He's thinking about it.

  • Juan Balboa (AAA) tossed 8 1-hit innings in a 2-0 win over the Anaconda Stranglers. The 28-year-old is 3-2 4.95 but cannot gain control of his fastball. He's walked 48 in 63.2 innings to just 39 strikeouts. And that's a guy who touches 99.

Who the heck is Eric Hecht? Player profile coming up. Jeff Chase leads the league in both ERA and Wins. Some big K totals in the AL so far.

The West is a 2 team race in June. They are both good, and healthy. I expect both to be in the playoffs. I have no clue about the central. Even though they are all under .500 I think the most amazing thing is Milwaukee is 16 games under but just 7.5 out! Are we for real? Time will tell but Detroit appears to be getting it going.

NL West title to San Francisco? Already 10 games up. The East looks to be a 1.5 team race right now and the central looks like all 4 could be in the mix at some point.

2006 JUNE DRAFT
Another momentous day for the organization. Even more so considering last year we picked 1st overall and traded the player!
There is no consensus #1 pick but our scouts want flamethrowing righty Andy Holton our of FSU. He's 6'6” 215 with a thunderbolt of an arm. I just cannot fathom using the 1st overall selection on a relief pitcher. No matter how good. The most advanced college bat and I think the biggest ceiling is Texas Tech 1B Ismael Saldana. He was the 9th overall pick last year and returned to school. He has major issues with LHP right now but he has the intelligence and tools to play a corner OF spot and get better all around. Definitely a 3-4 hole bat.

1) Florida - Ismael Saldana (9) 1B/OF Texas Tech 6' 185
2) St Louis - Andy Doukas RH RP Virginia 6'4” 195
3) Jacksonville - Jon Martin LH RP Stanford 6'6” 210
4) San Antonio - Steve Cooke RH RP Colorado 6'2” 190
5) Phoenix - Kaleb Zdeb (4) C HS 6' 185 (this was one of the guys I was considering)
6) Portland - Andy Holton RH RP Florida State 6'6” 215
7) Phoenix - Dwain Norlander (6) CF Oklahoma 6'1” 175
8) San Diego - Bobby Rupe 1B Minnesota 6'3” 205

2) Memphis – Eric Riley RHP Baylor 6'2” 190
3) Brooklyn – Jon Hanley RHP Penn State 6'2” 190
4) Denver – Andy Lee CF Wake Forest 6'1” 190

2nd round to the end of the draft
2) Jamie Okereke – S/R CF Nebraska 6' 185 Hall of fame defender right now. Could play everyday in the ABA in center today and be one of the games best. Did not hit ton in college but Luis convinced our staff he would.
3) Tristan Ellison – LHP Stanford 6'4” 200 Big burly right-hander with a good mix of pitches. His out pitch is a changeup added to a ++ Curveball. Working on a 4th pitch,
5) Ken Miller – LHP Texas A&M 6'1” 180 Mirror image of Ellison from a projection perspective. Both will hopefully develop as starters.
5) Nate Bosse – R/R 1B/OF UCLA 6'4” 215 Potential 5-6 hole hitter who will move to left in pro ball.
8) Jeff Duncan – R/R 3B UCLA 6'2” 2000 Already a ++ defender Luis and the rest of the staff think this kid is a huge steal in the 8th round.

A LOOK BACK AT THE 1st HALF

Name: 2006 Offense at the break.jpg
Views: 225
Size: 229.3 KB

Red is troublesome
Yellow is potentially troublesome
Green is happy numbers
Blue is extremely good to ecstatic numbers
  • 25 homers by the RF platoon
  • Juan Barranco wasn't a fluke
  • My catching is atrocious and needs a change
  • All three of my '3B' have unsustainable BABIP
  • Hayashi's BABIP indicates some insanely bad luck
  • Happy with my overall RNG factors but my corners ZR is repulsive in the IF
  • Luis Figueroa 18 HBP??? That's something that needs to change

Name: 2006 pitching at the break.jpg

Same color code
  • I think it's hilarious my ENTIRE rotation is 'hot'
  • Blue around GS is there because my theory is that the team that gets the most starts and IP from its opening day 5 has as good if not the best chance of winning the division
  • Chase, Ramirez a combined 17-3. Chase leads the game in wins
  • Chase H/9 is outstanding but that .218 BABIP is not sustainable
  • Noriega and Turner are issues. Noriega's numbers weren't done here, but Turners are, and they need addressing
  • 5 of the 12 pitchers with an exceptional WHIP
  • Turner HR/9 is horrific
  • Far far too many walks by the entire staff. I've always believed 5-1 by a stud is Koufax material. 3-1 is the 'floor' for me.I have exactly 4 guys at 3-1 or better.2 starters with 1-1 ratios.
  • Grab has done an outstanding job in the middle, quite unnoticed.

TARPONS ENTER THE 2nd HALF WITH A ROSTER SHAKEUP
In a press release today Tarpon GM Gehrig Schilling announced 6 player moves and was heard to say “I feel like we are legitimate. There are some peripherals that I know are likely to regress but this team has pitched and played it's butt off and if I can help them on the field that's what I will do.”

Three players were optioned to AAA Alamogordo: Right-handed reliever Brad Turner, Catcher Jeff Burwell and 1B Mike Stapp.
Two players were recalled: Reliever Jorge Esparza and Outfield Juan Tovar.
Veteran Catcher Bryan Haladay was put on the 38 man roster and recalled to backup Cobus Nabbe.
Veteran Catcher Juan Coyotl was given his release

Week 13

SUBJECT: WEEK 13 NOTES
SCHEDULE:
3 @ Alaska
3 vs St Louis
1 @ New York

Full slate. Alaska is reeling a bit from injuries. Like to pound St Louis and see if I can't close up the 3.5 game gap with the Phantoms.

RESULTS:

2 WAY STAR HEADING FROM THE DESERTS OF ARIZONA TO THE SNOW CAPPED MOUNTAINS OF ALASKA
In a move to shore up the Kodiak bullpen, Alaska has acquired 2-way star Chris Hunt for 3 prospects from Phoenix. SP Bunji Nakagawa C Aydan Dares and 1B Juan Mendoza. Nakagawa and Dares are tanked in the leagues top 200 list (175 and 123 respective) and Mendoza is a big time HS prospect out of Diamond Ridge Alaska. Local fans were crushed at the news of him being dealt.

Hunt, whose 3 million dollar contract is up at seasons end, is 31, and he hits and throws from the right side. Lifetime he's hit .270/.312/.441 with 147 2B 11 3B and 101 HR while driving in 361 in 735 ABA games, all in Phoenix. He was the 4th overall draft pick out of Washington where he won the 1994 and 1996 Golden Spikes Award as well as finishing 3rd in the 1995 voting. He was a 3 time all American. On the mound, he is 6-7 with 60 saves and a lifetime ERA of 3.07. He's appeared in 145 games punching out 184 in 155.1 innings while yielding just 9 home runs.
  • 6/26: ALK 3 FLA 2 Pat Millar walk-off solo HR Benoit L (2-1). Agresta took 2-0 into the 8th. Hayashi 2-4 HR (19)
  • Makata Hayashi last 6 games 9-20 6 HR 14 RBI
  • Clovis was crushed 18-3 today but Ismael Saldana went 2-5 and is 10-19 2 HR 6 RBI since signing
  • 11th rounder Steve Reynolds went 4-5 2 2B HR and 6 RBI in Rio Rancho's 8-7 win.
  • 6/27: FLA 3 ALK 2 Barlow W (5-6 4.17) 8 IP 6 H 1 K 2 ER Benoit SV (17) Hayashi HR (20) 2 RBI
  • Rio Rancho won 9-2 today and 9th round draft pick Jeremy Jones went 6-6 with 2 2B 3B and 4 RBI. In that game 17-year-old, phenom Juan Guerra went 3-5 scoring 2 and driving in 2. He was recently promoted out of the Int. Complex and is the youngest player in the Rookie league. He was signed out of Venezuela on January 1st of this year.
  • 6/28: ALK 3 FLA 1 Tanaka W (9-2 3.86) 8 IP 4 H 7 K 1 ER Camp ND 7 IP 5 H 1 ER
  • 6/29: FLA 7 STL 4 Pergande 2-4 HR (1) 3 RBI (11) Chase ND 7 IP 5 H 5 K 4 ER Benoit SV (18)
  • Former Tarpon Juan Beza (PHX) tossed a 1-hitter to beat Denver 4-0. He faced just 28 batters, striking out 8 and walking 0.

GENERAL MANAGERS OFFICE
Mr. Medina dropped by today to catch up on our 'to do' list and I think to give me a nice pat on the back for the most part.
As he ticked off the goals he let me know how he was feeling about each.
1) He wanted us to finish .500 or close to it, and is beyond excited at the 48-30 record we sport today.
2) He was keenly interested in bringing in a 2B, an 'upgrade' was how he put it. Jon Harris is hitting .268-6-36 and playing great defense and Juan loves the kid.
3) He wasn't all that pleased at our financials right now (which sucks because the International free agent pool is getting ready to come out and the signing period begins soon)
4) He is incredibly pleased at the monumental progress our minor league system has made. He raved about young Kinnon Mendelson and said while we are not a top 5 organization yet he feels we couldn't be doing much better at the moment.
5) He's awkwardly pushy about our draft record. He apparently thinks ABA baseball mimics the NFL or NBA in that he wants more draft picks in the big leagues. I tried to explain to him the chasm that exists between the sports and draft picks. Making sure he understands having a drafted player hit the big league roster in 3 years is a feat of rare accomplishment and we've been 'alive' for exactly 1.5 years. He did point to Joe Linn and how “that kid made it” and I had to respond with “yes he did Mr Medina. He also sported a 6.57 ERA before he was sent back to Bloomington (AAA) where he currently sits at 5-3 6.14 in 10 starts.” I lamented that trading him was the biggest challenge I've had to this point in my career. Draft picks are like platinum to me. But I then trotted out .305-16-43 which are Mike Haupts stats through today, 58.9% which is our season ticket sales increase and 70.2% which is both our per game attendance increase and our revenue per game increase.

  • 6/30: FLA 12 STL 1 Ramirez W (7-1 3.53) 8.1 IP 3 H 12 K 1 ER Haupt 2 HR (18) 3 RBI (46) Hayashi 3-5 HR (21) 2 RBI Haladay 2-3 3B RBI
  • Rio Rancho lost 9-8 but Jeremy Jones had another big day hitting a grand slam and driving in 5.
  • Steve Eisentrout was the 8th overall pick in the 2005 draft by New England. In 149 games since being drafted, 74 at A and 75 at AA he has hit 76 HR and driven in 171 runs.

MONTHLY ORGANIZATION MEETING
The scouting and player reports from this months meeting are exceptional. Almost every player at every level is showing marginal to outstanding improvement. Notables include Makata Hayashi 3* to 3.5* rating, Geoff Gilmore 1.5 to 2* potential and his making more consistent contact. Ajani Foggie has moved from 1* to 1.5* and his potential from 1.5 to 2.0*. Arturo Mendoza has seen improved control and his potential has moved from 1.5 to 2*. Teagan Beairston is making more solid contact and showing great strides as a defender and has moved from 2 to 2.5* potential. 2B Dave Conover has jumped onto the prospect map in the last 10 months moving from 1.0 to today's meeting where our scouts rate him a potential 3* 2B. Ignacio Camargo has shown progress in his understanding of the strike zone and seen his potential rating go up .5*. Dave Weller has seen a significant improvement in his potential power. He's moved from an average power guy to what our scouts now think will end up a + power bat.

I mention this all mainly because I have quite a few coaches in the organization who's contracts are up. I am going to work to re-up them all.
  • 7/1: FLA 4 STL 2 Agresta W (9-4 3.69) 8 IP 2 H 12 K 2 ER Benoit 19th save in 20 chances.
  • The international market opened today and there is a slew of outstanding prospects. The list and current activity will follow in another post.

  • 42-year-old legend Jaquan Protho has announced he will retire at seasons end. The righty has been in the ABA since the inaugural 1990 season. He's 197-115 3.79 lifetime with 2210 K's in 2687 innings. He was the winner of the 1990 and 1991 Sandy Koufax award as well as finishing 3rd in 1998. He was a 5-time all-star winning his lone World Series with Las Vegas in 1996. He led the league with 22 wins in its first season as well as winning the 1990-91 ERA titles. Led the league in IP in 1990 with 256.1 and 1999 with 213.2.
  • He has 20 career shutouts, 2 1-hitters, 2 2-hitters and 5 career 3-hitters.
  • He ranks 4th all-time in wins (197) 9th in starts (396) 5th in CG (50) 2nd in SHO (20) 8th in IP (2687) 9th in hits allowed (2514) and 10th in WAR (54.7)

It appears Eric Hecht and Domenic Loetzsch are going to give it a run. Both are all over the leaderboards in the 3 triple crown categories. I think that 30 pt gap in Avg will be as daunting for Loetzsch as the gap in HR's will be for Hecht.
Jeff Chase is 2nd in the league in ERA and tied for 1st in wins. Readers will remember when I signed him last year I had hoped he could be a part of this moving forward as a mid-rotation guy but he's outperformed my wildest expectations.
Mike Haupt is 'quietly' having an outstanding season. Alward and Stanton appear to both want the single-season K record. Masahiro Tanaka set the record in 1998 at 331. They are both on pace to surpass 350 and Dave Young, lurking in 3rd is on a 326 K pace.
All those Portland names in the offensive leaders are offset by a staff ranked 12th in runs given up, 9th in starters ERA and 12th in both Bullpen ERA and defense. They lead the NL in home runs at 161.

I am not boasting but it appears one of us is winning this division and the other is going to likely be the Wild Card. It feels like the only real questions for a postseason spot rest with the AL Central winner and the 1-2 seeding for the Wild Card. Obviously, health will be a huge factor but this could be a situation where every postseason team might have a chance to set up their playoff rotation. Likely the single most important factor for me if I am a potential WC. I honestly think if I had to choose today I'd take Ramirez for the play in game.

How the mighty have fallen. LA is in the midst of a nightmare. San Francisco has been white hot since opening day. New England is starting to pull away in the East and it appears to be a 2 horse race, aptly enough, between the Broncos and Cowboys in the Central. I think it's a 3 dog hunt for the Wild Card and there could potentially be 3 of the 4 teams from the West in the post-season.

My impatience last year cost me this year. I can't even begin to get onto the field at these numbers. I'm going to sit back and hope some of the long shots drop as they stay out there.

Here's a look at the players currently in my complex. I love the mix, 8 pitchers, and 10 position players. Would love to see 1 if not 2 of the catchers blossom but right now I am hoping for Portio, Mendelson on the mound and Kumagai and Estrella as position guys. I think we are looking at moving both Ramirez and Turcios off the mound. Turcios is a giant at 6'7”.

Week 14

SUBJECT: WEEK 14 NOTES
SCHEDULE:
2 @ New York
3 vs Las Vegas
OFF DAY
1 @ Detroit

Vegas is the AL's top scoring offense coming into the week

RESULTS:
  • 7/3: FLA 7 NY 5 (10) Barranco 3-5 GW 2B HR (15) 3 RBI (58) Benoit SV (20)
  • 7/4: NY 3 FLA 2 Chase blows a 2-1 lead in 8th (11-3 3.01) 7.2 IP 3 ER 5 K 5 BB
  • Ajanie Foggie was hurt in a collision at Alamogordo today. He's hitting .320-7-29 in 31 games since being sent down.
  • 21-year-old Max Ramirez is 16 for his last 36 with 4 HR and 10 RBI and is hitting .301-11-40 on the year.
  • 19-year-old OF prospect Layne Jardin was recently promoted to SS Hobbs and has gone 18-35 with a HR and 11 RBI. He went 3-5 and drove in 6 today.
  • Pat Scott (DEN) hit 3 HR and drove in 6 in an 8-4 win over Minnesota
  • 7/5: FLA 7 LV 2 Ramirez W (8-1) 7 IP 3 H 4 K 1 ER Benoit SV (21) Harris 3-5 2B RBI
  • Baden Stennings (SAN) tossed a 3-hitter striking out 6 in a 6-0 win over San Diego
  • Milwaukee sent top P prospect Tim Steele (#36) and catcher Randy Brown to Kansas City for reliever Amari Worlds (0-2 3 SV) and 21-year-old RP prospect Dave Cravin.
  • Washington sent OF prospect Meiji Hayashi (#159) and veteran 1B Greg Wotruba (.269-13-28) and his 1.9m dollar contract to Phoenix in exchange for SP Alfredo Medina (3-2 5.83 AAA) and P Prospect Bunji Nakagawa (#175). Wotruba's contract runs through 2007. He's hit 208 career home runs and has a career slash line of .295/.373/.526 in 1034 games.
  • 7/6: FLA 12 LV 7 Haupt 2-5 2 HR (21) 5 RBI (54) Hayashi 2 HR (25) 2 RBI (67) Benoit SV (22)
  • Luis Figueroa homered early on and then was drilled in the 7th, he charged, he's suspended. The club will pay his fine. We mentioned at the break his 18 HBP were ridiculous and the team took care of one of its own. That's what we want and expect.
  • Omar Samedi (ALK) punched out 16 and allowed 1 hit over 8 strong innings in a 3-1 win over St Louis.

    ABA NEWS
LEAGUE SUSPENDS 2 IN TARPON, LAS VEGAS BENCH CLEARER
Luis Figueroa of Florida and Las Vegas reliever Quintin Atteridge were both suspended after today's bench-clearing brawl. Figueroa was suspended 3 games while Atteridge will have to sit out 6.
“It's weak, it's selfish and it's stupid. I homer and they're going to drill me because they can't get me out” said the 25-year-old 3B who is hitting .303-15-45.
“Really? He said that?” Atteridge replied. “Maybe is his $%#@!$ $## didn't take a week to round the bases on a fence scraper he wouldn't get himself drilled”.
Obviously, Atteridge didn't hide the fact of intent which many believe is the reason he got 6 games instead of the usual 3.
Las Vegas fancies themselves as the team to beat in the AL and Florida has beaten them 4 of 7 meetings to date.
Veteran Jorge Saiz tossed a CG 6-hitter with 8 punchouts to lead Alamogordo to a 10-1 win. He's 6-6 on the year and pitching consistently well. Teams are starting to call.

  • 7/7: LV 8 FLA 5 Allen, Grab 2.2 IP 6 H 4 ER Hayashi 3-4 HR (26) 4 RBI (71)
  • 7/8: OFF DAY
  • Damn. LA Storm traded knuckleballer Jon Girard and a veteran LHP to acquire Tim Taylor and minor leaguer Chris Madura. Taylor was the Spartans 1st pick, 3rd overall, out of Kansas State. He is coming off a .292-30-95 season hitting .253-13-39 this year. Our scouting dept. loves him (3*).
  • Veteran readers might remember Girard and my desire to draft him. I waited too long!
  • Some major names changing places in Milwaukee and New England. The Minutemen acquire star 3B Alfredo Ulloa and C prospect Vince Rydell (Milwaukee took him in the 2nd round last month) and send veteran RP Jarod Hurlson and 26-year-old star in the making Jim Carr, a right-handed reliever just 26 years old.
  • Ulloa has hit .282/.343/.494 in 505 career games with 100 HR and 287 RBI. New England is 43-44 but leading the NL East by 3 games. Milwaukee is 17 games under .500 and trying to put something together for next year.
  • Remember Esteban Cobos? He of the 43 game hitting streak? The 20-year-old was sent packing today. He and veteran 1B Chris Spriggs were sent to Jacksonville and Washington acquired 40-year-old reliever Josh Missouri and 22 year old OF prospect Luis Nieves.
  • 7/9: FLA 6 DET 2 Camp W (6-5 3.69) 6 IP 5 H 11 K 0 ER Haupt HR (22) Rand 3-4
  • Chris Mattingly L (9-3 3.19) 5 IP 7 H 4 ER
  • Not sure what's going on in St Louis. They traded 22-year-old pitching prospect Ernesto Madrid for 30-year-old reliever Frank Leger. Leger is a stud for sure, 56 K's in 33 IP this year but they're 40-48 (far better record than I thought btw) and 14 games out of a wild-card spot.
AL POTW - Pat Scott (DEN) 8-20 4 HR 8 RBI (.219-12-37)
NL POTW – Dan Detray (TEX) 10-22 4 HR 12 RBI (.332-23-62)

Rio Rancho 2B Billy Howard took home POTW honors going 10-18 3 HR 9 RBI and is hitting .391-5-17 since being drafted last month.

Week 18

SUBJECT: WEEK 18 NOTES
SCHEDULE:

OFF DAY

RESULTS:

TRADE DEADLINE NEWS

Las Vegas, Florida, beat the deadline with a blockbuster
Las Vegas GM Shawn Barton steps up to the podium.
“Thank you all for coming on such short notice. This deal happened literally out of nowhere. A casual conversation turned into what we're about to announce and I don't think I, nor Gehrig, intended anything of this magnitude.
I'd like to announce that the Las Vegas Aces have acquired the services of Ted Barlow, Closer Joaquin Benoit, infielder Bobby Pergande and two prospects, as well as the Tarpons 20th pick.
Before anyone attempts to congratulate me I'll tell you this. We got significantly better today but we did so at an extreme cost.
We sent our top 2 starting pitching prospects, who were also our #1 selections in the 2003 and 2005 drafts, in Chad Willoughby and Kody Pollock, and a kid I think is the best overall relief prospect in the minors in Sam Ginn, OF Tomiji Takamoto, a young man on the cusp of being an ABA regular and finally we sent them our 2nd round pick in the 2007 amateur draft. I have to tell you quite honestly that as a GM of a team in contention, this might be the first trade I've ever made that I would be glad to be on either side of. I think the Tarpons got infinitely better in the long run and I think we feel we are now as good as a team as there is in the game”

Meanwhile in Miami.....
Gehrig Schilling steps to the podium:
“Folks thanks for coming on such short notice. I am about to announce a trade that I would bet no one, including myself, saw coming. We've made no bones about our desire to build something here. A franchise that wins year in and year out. What this team has done this year is nothing short of amazing and for that, I owe these players all the credit. Almost an entirely new roster came together in spring training and what they've done through today is nothing short of a miracle.
Having said that I am here to announce the following. Please hold all comments and questions until I am done.
I have sent starting pitcher Ted Barlow, closer Joaquin Benoit, Infielder Bobby Pergande and two prospects, OF Mike Eddins and C Ken Mack, to the Las Vegas Aces. Oh, I also sent them our 20th round pick in the 2007 draft.
In return, we have acquired the Aces top three pitching prospects and a young outfielder as well as their 2nd round pick in the 2007 draft.
Let me give you a quick rundown on each player we have acquired.
Chad Willoughby was Vegas' 1st round pick (9th overall) in the 2003 draft out of California. He came in as the games 40th rated prospect this year. He's a big kid and throws from the right side. He's probably ready to come up right now be he'll head to Alamogordo.
Kody Pollock was Vegas' 1st round pick (14th overall) in the 2005 draft out of Georgia Tech. He was the 38th rated prospect in 2006. He was the NCAA Pitcher of the Year in 2003 2004 as well as a 3 time all American. He's just 22 and a mid 90's left-hander we expect to be, along with Chad, at the top of our rotation for years to come. He's a clubhouse presence as well. He'll likely head to Clovis.
Sam Ginn was acquired by Las Vegas from Pittsburgh just last week. He was the Miners 3rd rounder (75th overall) in the 2003 draft after an All-American season for the Fighting Illini. He's an upper 90's power arm we expect to be closing out games for us in the near future.
24-year-old Tomiji Takimoto was signed as an International FA out of Japan in 1999. He's done nothing but his since then. His right-handed power bat is well suited for the Tarpon Tank and he's a RF by trade. Very good zone awareness with well above average power that we think hasn't fully matured yet. He will head to AAA Alamogordo.
Finally, we managed to snag the 2nd round pick Vegas has in the 2007 draft, This was not a 'throw in' for either side. We recognize that if we don't plan the get extravagant in the market each winter we must use the June draft as our most precious commodity and we treat those picks as such. This was a huge piece in this deal..
  1. Veteran SP Luca Martignoni is recalled to take Barlow's rotation spot
  2. Reliever Brad Turner is recalled to take Benoit's spot in the pen
  3. 25-year-old Ron Turner is added to the 38 man and recalled. He's a supreme defender all around the IF and has good enough zone discipline that the lack of offense he might have will be offset in his ability to both get on base and run.
  4. Pollock is sent to AA Clovis, Willoughby and Takimoto and Ginn to AAA Alamogordo
  5. Pollock will take the ball for Clovis today
  6. Juan Madrid will take over the closer's role and Turner will be the LH setup man with Grab from the right side.

  • 7/31: PHX 5 FLA 0 Steve Wimer ABA debut 8.1 scoreless, 7 H 5 K W.

  • Chad Willoughby made his first AAA start going 6 IP 7 H 5 K 4 ER in a ND
  • Clovis was crushed 16-2 today and SP Arturo Mendoza gave up 7 ER in just 3.1 IP. Israel Saldana went 2-4 with a triple, HR and an RBI
  • MVP and former World Series Champion Joe Jackson (OK) hit his 500th career home run today. He is just the 9th player ever to accomplish the feat. He has hit .273 with 500 HR (9th all-time) and 1415 career RBI's (11th all time)

DRILLERS ACQUIRE SAIZ FROM TARPONS
The Oklahoma Drillers have acquired veteran starter Jorge Saiz from the Florida Tarpons as well as minor league prospects Mitch Boozer (P) and SS Ignacio Camargo and the Tarpons 5th round draft choice in 2007. Oklahoma had to send top outfield prospect Zach Astor to Florida to complete the deal.
Astor was the Drillers 3rd round draft choice out of Texas Tech in this June's draft.
Saiz is 43-51 5.39 career as well as a 2 time World Champion with Detroit in 2002 and 2003. He has struck out 845 in 874 IP with 323 walks and 909 hits. He was 7-8 4.69 with AAA Alamogordo this season. The 34-year-old was sent to AAA Stillwater.

I didn't think Saiz would clear waivers. This looks like 'a lot' for one minor league player. And the draft pick was almost a bridge too far. But Astor is a guy Luis Mora and our scouts are far higher on than most others around the league. They're saying he's a potential 50 HR guy, which I think most are ok with but around the league no one thinks he'll make enough contact or enough solid contact to even hit .250. Our guys think he's a possible .275-.300 guy. He's just 21, and a horse at 6'3” 200. He's a corner outfielder that needs a lot of work. No speed to speak of but has a very good arm and above average hands. His lack of range likely means he'll end up in left. He's another potential RH power bat.
  • 8/5: BRK 6 FLA 1 Chad Ragan W (6-7 3.94) 8 IP 3 H 1 ER came out with a stiff back in the 9th.
  • Camp L (6-9 4.24) 5 IP 7 H 4 ER Figueroa 15th error
  • Kody Pollack threw an 8 inning CG losing 3-1. Punched out 8 and gave up 6 hits.
  • 13th round draft pick Chris Wallace tied a Rio Rancho record with 13 K's over 8 innings of a 6-2 win today. He walked 1 gave up 5 hits and allowed just an earned run.
  • 8/6: BRK 6 FLA 2 Chase L (12-7 4.02) 5 IP 5 BB 7 H 6 ER
  • Luis Acevedo W (10-4 4.47) CG 7 K 2 ER Dan Goodman 2-3 2 BB 2 HR 4 RBI

Wow, back to back triple crowns? What a month he had. Speaking of triple crowns, Winton Alward has apparently put the league on notice. There have been 5 triple crowns in ABA history, only 1 pitching. Mike Olson in 1996 went 19-7 2.29 296 K for Jaxonville in winning his 3rd Koufax. He was a 4 time World Series Champion.

The NL East is looking at being historically bad. Stunningly bad. It looks like the Central divisions will provide the only real pennant races this year. Frisco is cruising in the NL West although Portland has had a great 2 months. 27-28 on June 1st they've gone 35-19 since. They own the NL in almost every offensive category while at the same time they are quite literally last in almost every single pitching/defense category except for K's. ERA, Bullpen ERA, RA, Hits, Opp Avg, BABIP Defense. Their .321 BABIP as a TEAM is insane.

Detroit has gotten hot. To be honest their roster is so much deeper 1-25 than ours, for now. I think the Barlow deal changes everything about this organization from a development perspective. I'll be shocked if we don't have the top-ranked, or second best minors system in the game. Memphis and Chicago appear to be taking it to the end while Vegas has wrapped up the West on August 1st. We are 7.5 up on Alaska for the 2nd WC spot and I absolutely expect this team to win one of the wild card positions regardless of the trade. We have talent enough to capably fill the holes we opened.
