Week 8
SUBJECT: WEEK 8 NOTES
SCEHDULE: 2 @ Las Vegas (33-13 +1) OFF DAY 3 vs Detroit (29-17 +2) 1 vs Chicago (25-21 +2) Interesting week. All 6 games are vs the 3 first place clubs in the AL. I am seriously shocked and excited that we're 8 games above .500 with the #1 defense in the AL the 2nd best starting ERA and the 3rd best bullpen. All the pitching stuff surprises me but in a good way. The offense has been a bit of a disappointment with the horrid start by Foggie, Hayashi and the trade of Grider.. RESULTS:
AL POTW - Eric Schmidt (AK) 14-27 HR 7 RBI (.270-5-25) NL POTW Alpha Malveaux (OK) 13-25 2 HR 6 RBI (.309-19-46) RECORD: 5-1 (32-20) PLACE: 2nd 2 GB RUNS SCORED: 280 5th RUNS GIVEN UP: 229 2nd DEFENSE: .714 1st OWNER MOOD: Upset (52/100) POWER RANKINGS 1) San Francisco 136.5 back on top 2) Las Vegas 136.1 3) Alaska 135.1 4) Detroit 119.2 5) Florida 118.8 I was not expecting a 5-1 week with that schedule. Ever game was vs a team ahead of us in the power rankings. Maybe we are legitimate contenders for something?

Week 9
SUBJECT: WEEK 9 NOTES
SCEHDULE: 2 vs Chicago (26-26 -) 3 @ Denver (26-26 11 GB) 2 vs Minnesota (24-27 8.5 GB) RESULTS:
AL POTW - Joe Vertz (OH) 13-28 4 HR 6 RBI (.344-21-54) NL POTW CJ Reisner (PIT) 12-23 3 HR 14 RBI (.277-11-38) RECORD: 4-3 (36-23) PLACE: 2nd 1 GB RUNS SCORED: 316 4th RUNS GIVEN UP: 261 t-2nd DEFENSE: .716 2nd OWNER MOOD: Upset POWER RANKINGS 1) Las Vegas 142.2 2) San Francisco 124.1 3) Alaska 123 4) Detroit 115.9 5) Florida 110.8 Who the heck is Eric Hecht? Player profile coming up. Jeff Chase leads the league in both ERA and Wins. Some big K totals in the AL so far. The West is a 2 team race in June. They are both good, and healthy. I expect both to be in the playoffs. I have no clue about the central. Even though they are all under .500 I think the most amazing thing is Milwaukee is 16 games under but just 7.5 out! Are we for real? Time will tell but Detroit appears to be getting it going. NL West title to San Francisco? Already 10 games up. The East looks to be a 1.5 team race right now and the central looks like all 4 could be in the mix at some point.

2006 JUNE DRAFT
Another momentous day for the organization. Even more so considering last year we picked 1st overall and traded the player! There is no consensus #1 pick but our scouts want flamethrowing righty Andy Holton our of FSU. He's 6'6 215 with a thunderbolt of an arm. I just cannot fathom using the 1st overall selection on a relief pitcher. No matter how good. The most advanced college bat and I think the biggest ceiling is Texas Tech 1B Ismael Saldana. He was the 9th overall pick last year and returned to school. He has major issues with LHP right now but he has the intelligence and tools to play a corner OF spot and get better all around. Definitely a 3-4 hole bat. 1) Florida - Ismael Saldana (9) 1B/OF Texas Tech 6' 185 2) St Louis - Andy Doukas RH RP Virginia 6'4 195 3) Jacksonville - Jon Martin LH RP Stanford 6'6 210 4) San Antonio - Steve Cooke RH RP Colorado 6'2 190 5) Phoenix - Kaleb Zdeb (4) C HS 6' 185 (this was one of the guys I was considering) 6) Portland - Andy Holton RH RP Florida State 6'6 215 7) Phoenix - Dwain Norlander (6) CF Oklahoma 6'1 175 8) San Diego - Bobby Rupe 1B Minnesota 6'3 205 9) Milwaukee Eric Barrios RF California 6'2 195 10) Ohio Danny Schroeder (2) SS Virginia 6'1 185 11) Kansas City Mike Shannon CF Iowa 6'3 190 12) San Diego Mike Topolski (1) 1B Texas 6' 175 13) New England- Kelyn Rathwell RHP Minnesota 6'2 195 14) Oklahoma Teagan Meloche 3B Ohio State 6' 190 15) Ohio Zach Sheppard (10) 2B Minnesota 6'1 190 (3rd Golden Gopher taken so far) 16) Minnesota Whitney Seguin CL Oklahoma 6' 175 17) Pittsburgh Zach Page RHP 5'7 FA 175 18) Minnesota Jeff Ledoux RHP 6' FA 190 19) San Francisco Harland Bolduc SS 6' 180 Michigan State 20) New York Steve Weissman RHP U of Arizona 6'1 180 21) Memphis Jonathan Claypool LHP Illinois 5'10 175 22) Washington Pat Peterson LF Kansas State 6' 185 23) Pittsburgh Tyrese Umoh LHP Indiana 5'11 180 24) Texas Ed Thomas RH Colorado 6'2 190 25) Alaska Gene Schneider SS Clemson 6'1 175 26) Las Vegas Jake Hornaday LHP Florida State 6'6 220 27) Brooklyn Bobby Miles RHP Georgia Tech 6'2 195 28) Los Angeles Jim Kelly RHP Ohio State 6'1 195 (5* potential but just had elbow surgery) SUPPLEMENTAL ROUND 1 1) Oklahoma Mike Theriault (3) 1B FA 5'11 180 2) Memphis Eric Riley RHP Baylor 6'2 190 3) Brooklyn Jon Hanley RHP Penn State 6'2 190 4) Denver Andy Lee CF Wake Forest 6'1 190 2nd round to the end of the draft 2) Jamie Okereke S/R CF Nebraska 6' 185 Hall of fame defender right now. His out pitch is a changeup added to a ++ Curveball. Working on a 4th pitch, 5) Ken Miller LHP Texas A&M 6'1 180 Mirror image of Ellison from a projection perspective. Both will hopefully develop as starters. 5) Nate Bosse R/R 1B/OF UCLA 6'4 215 Potential 5-6 hole hitter who will move to left in pro ball. 8) Jeff Duncan R/R 3B UCLA 6'2 2000 Already a ++ defender Luis and the rest of the staff think this kid is a huge steal in the 8th round. 9) Jeremy Jones L/R SS/IF Baylor 5'8 160 11) Steve Reynolds R/R OF/3B Michigan 6' 190 12) Sam Francis L/L LHP Boston College 6' 185 13) Billy Howard R/R 2B Clemson 5'11 175 14) Josh Schuurmans L/L LHP 6' 180 Indiana 15) Tim Mccormack R/R IF 5'11 190 Maryland 16) Chris Wallace R/R RHP 5'11 175 U of Miami 17) Ben Kofman R/R IF/OF 6'1 180 Vestavia Hills HS 18) Kevin Wilde R/R RHP 6'1 195 Minnesota 19) Dan Nivison R/R OF 6'3 200 North Carolina State 20) Davon Nedrick L/L LHP 6'1 190 Ohio State

A LOOK BACK AT THE 1st HALF
Red is troublesome Yellow is potentially troublesome Green is happy numbers Blue is extremely good to ecstatic numbers
Same color code
TARPONS ENTER THE 2nd HALF WITH A ROSTER SHAKEUP In a press release today Tarpon GM Gehrig Schilling announced 6 player moves and was heard to say I feel like we are legitimate. There are some peripherals that I know are likely to regress but this team has pitched and played it's butt off and if I can help them on the field that's what I will do. Three players were optioned to AAA Alamogordo: Right-handed reliever Brad Turner, Catcher Jeff Burwell and 1B Mike Stapp. Two players were recalled: Reliever Jorge Esparza and Outfield Juan Tovar. Veteran Catcher Bryan Haladay was put on the 38 man roster and recalled to backup Cobus Nabbe. Veteran Catcher Juan Coyotl was given his release

Week 13
SUBJECT: WEEK 13 NOTES
SCHEDULE: 3 @ Alaska 3 vs St Louis 1 @ New York Full slate. Alaska is reeling a bit from injuries. Like to pound St Louis and see if I can't close up the 3.5 game gap with the Phantoms. RESULTS: 2 WAY STAR HEADING FROM THE DESERTS OF ARIZONA TO THE SNOW CAPPED MOUNTAINS OF ALASKA In a move to shore up the Kodiak bullpen, Alaska has acquired 2-way star Chris Hunt for 3 prospects from Phoenix. SP Bunji Nakagawa C Aydan Dares and 1B Juan Mendoza. Nakagawa and Dares are tanked in the leagues top 200 list (175 and 123 respective) and Mendoza is a big time HS prospect out of Diamond Ridge Alaska. Local fans were crushed at the news of him being dealt. Hunt, whose 3 million dollar contract is up at seasons end, is 31, and he hits and throws from the right side. Lifetime he's hit .270/.312/.441 with 147 2B 11 3B and 101 HR while driving in 361 in 735 ABA games, all in Phoenix. He was the 4th overall draft pick out of Washington where he won the 1994 and 1996 Golden Spikes Award as well as finishing 3rd in the 1995 voting. He was a 3 time all American. On the mound, he is 6-7 with 60 saves and a lifetime ERA of 3.07. He's appeared in 145 games punching out 184 in 155.1 innings while yielding just 9 home runs.
GENERAL MANAGERS OFFICE Mr. Medina dropped by today to catch up on our 'to do' list and I think to give me a nice pat on the back for the most part. As he ticked off the goals he let me know how he was feeling about each. 1) He wanted us to finish .500 or close to it, and is beyond excited at the 48-30 record we sport today. 2) He was keenly interested in bringing in a 2B, an 'upgrade' was how he put it. Jon Harris is hitting .268-6-36 and playing great defense and Juan loves the kid. 3) He wasn't all that pleased at our financials right now (which sucks because the International free agent pool is getting ready to come out and the signing period begins soon) 4) He is incredibly pleased at the monumental progress our minor league system has made. He raved about young Kinnon Mendelson and said while we are not a top 5 organization yet he feels we couldn't be doing much better at the moment. 5) He's awkwardly pushy about our draft record. He apparently thinks ABA baseball mimics the NFL or NBA in that he wants more draft picks in the big leagues. I tried to explain to him the chasm that exists between the sports and draft picks. Making sure he understands having a drafted player hit the big league roster in 3 years is a feat of rare accomplishment and we've been 'alive' for exactly 1.5 years. He did point to Joe Linn and how that kid made it and I had to respond with yes he did Mr Medina. He also sported a 6.57 ERA before he was sent back to Bloomington (AAA) where he currently sits at 5-3 6.14 in 10 starts. I lamented that trading him was the biggest challenge I've had to this point in my career. Draft picks are like platinum to me. But I then trotted out .305-16-43 which are Mike Haupts stats through today, 58.9% which is our season ticket sales increase and 70.2% which is both our per game attendance increase and our revenue per game increase.
MONTHLY ORGANIZATION MEETING The scouting and player reports from this months meeting are exceptional. Almost every player at every level is showing marginal to outstanding improvement. Notables include Makata Hayashi 3* to 3.5* rating, Geoff Gilmore 1.5 to 2* potential and his making more consistent contact. Ajani Foggie has moved from 1* to 1.5* and his potential from 1.5 to 2.0*. Arturo Mendoza has seen improved control and his potential has moved from 1.5 to 2*. Teagan Beairston is making more solid contact and showing great strides as a defender and has moved from 2 to 2.5* potential. 2B Dave Conover has jumped onto the prospect map in the last 10 months moving from 1.0 to today's meeting where our scouts rate him a potential 3* 2B. Ignacio Camargo has shown progress in his understanding of the strike zone and seen his potential rating go up .5*. Dave Weller has seen a significant improvement in his potential power. He's moved from an average power guy to what our scouts now think will end up a + power bat. I mention this all mainly because I have quite a few coaches in the organization who's contracts are up. I am going to work to re-up them all.

It appears Eric Hecht and Domenic Loetzsch are going to give it a run. Both are all over the leaderboards in the 3 triple crown categories. I think that 30 pt gap in Avg will be as daunting for Loetzsch as the gap in HR's will be for Hecht. Jeff Chase is 2nd in the league in ERA and tied for 1st in wins. Readers will remember when I signed him last year I had hoped he could be a part of this moving forward as a mid-rotation guy but he's outperformed my wildest expectations. Mike Haupt is 'quietly' having an outstanding season. Alward and Stanton appear to both want the single-season K record. Masahiro Tanaka set the record in 1998 at 331. They are both on pace to surpass 350 and Dave Young, lurking in 3rd is on a 326 K pace. All those Portland names in the offensive leaders are offset by a staff ranked 12th in runs given up, 9th in starters ERA and 12th in both Bullpen ERA and defense. They lead the NL in home runs at 161. I am not boasting but it appears one of us is winning this division and the other is going to likely be the Wild Card. It feels like the only real questions for a postseason spot rest with the AL Central winner and the 1-2 seeding for the Wild Card. Obviously, health will be a huge factor but this could be a situation where every postseason team might have a chance to set up their playoff rotation. Likely the single most important factor for me if I am a potential WC. I honestly think if I had to choose today I'd take Ramirez for the play in game. How the mighty have fallen. LA is in the midst of a nightmare. San Francisco has been white hot since opening day. New England is starting to pull away in the East and it appears to be a 2 horse race, aptly enough, between the Broncos and Cowboys in the Central. I think it's a 3 dog hunt for the Wild Card and there could potentially be 3 of the 4 teams from the West in the post-season. My impatience last year cost me this year. I can't even begin to get onto the field at these numbers. I'm going to sit back and hope some of the long shots drop as they stay out there. Here's a look at the players currently in my complex. I love the mix, 8 pitchers, and 10 position players. Would love to see 1 if not 2 of the catchers blossom but right now I am hoping for Portio, Mendelson on the mound and Kumagai and Estrella as position guys. I think we are looking at moving both Ramirez and Turcios off the mound. Turcios is a giant at 6'7.

Week 18
SUBJECT: WEEK 18 NOTES
SCHEDULE: 3 @ Phoenix OFF DAY 3 @ Brooklyn RESULTS: TRADE DEADLINE NEWS Las Vegas, Florida, beat the deadline with a blockbuster Las Vegas GM Shawn Barton steps up to the podium. Thank you all for coming on such short notice. This deal happened literally out of nowhere. A casual conversation turned into what we're about to announce and I don't think I, nor Gehrig, intended anything of this magnitude. I'd like to announce that the Las Vegas Aces have acquired the services of Ted Barlow, Closer Joaquin Benoit, infielder Bobby Pergande and two prospects, as well as the Tarpons 20th pick. Before anyone attempts to congratulate me I'll tell you this. We got significantly better today but we did so at an extreme cost. We sent our top 2 starting pitching prospects, who were also our #1 selections in the 2003 and 2005 drafts, in Chad Willoughby and Kody Pollock, and a kid I think is the best overall relief prospect in the minors in Sam Ginn, OF Tomiji Takamoto, a young man on the cusp of being an ABA regular and finally we sent them our 2nd round pick in the 2007 amateur draft. I have to tell you quite honestly that as a GM of a team in contention, this might be the first trade I've ever made that I would be glad to be on either side of. I think the Tarpons got infinitely better in the long run and I think we feel we are now as good as a team as there is in the game Meanwhile in Miami..... Gehrig Schilling steps to the podium: Folks thanks for coming on such short notice. I am about to announce a trade that I would bet no one, including myself, saw coming. We've made no bones about our desire to build something here. A franchise that wins year in and year out. What this team has done this year is nothing short of amazing and for that, I owe these players all the credit. Almost an entirely new roster came together in spring training and what they've done through today is nothing short of a miracle. Having said that I am here to announce the following. Please hold all comments and questions until I am done. I have sent starting pitcher Ted Barlow, closer Joaquin Benoit, Infielder Bobby Pergande and two prospects, OF Mike Eddins and C Ken Mack, to the Las Vegas Aces. Oh, I also sent them our 20th round pick in the 2007 draft. In return, we have acquired the Aces top three pitching prospects and a young outfielder as well as their 2nd round pick in the 2007 draft. Let me give you a quick rundown on each player we have acquired. Chad Willoughby was Vegas' 1st round pick (9th overall) in the 2003 draft out of California. He came in as the games 40th rated prospect this year. He's a big kid and throws from the right side. He's probably ready to come up right now be he'll head to Alamogordo. Kody Pollock was Vegas' 1st round pick (14th overall) in the 2005 draft out of Georgia Tech. He was the 38th rated prospect in 2006. He was the NCAA Pitcher of the Year in 2003 2004 as well as a 3 time all American. He's just 22 and a mid 90's left-hander we expect to be, along with Chad, at the top of our rotation for years to come. He's a clubhouse presence as well. He'll likely head to Clovis. Sam Ginn was acquired by Las Vegas from Pittsburgh just last week. He was the Miners 3rd rounder (75th overall) in the 2003 draft after an All-American season for the Fighting Illini. He's an upper 90's power arm we expect to be closing out games for us in the near future. 24-year-old Tomiji Takimoto was signed as an International FA out of Japan in 1999. He's done nothing but his since then. His right-handed power bat is well suited for the Tarpon Tank and he's a RF by trade. Very good zone awareness with well above average power that we think hasn't fully matured yet. He will head to AAA Alamogordo. Finally, we managed to snag the 2nd round pick Vegas has in the 2007 draft, This was not a 'throw in' for either side. We recognize that if we don't plan the get extravagant in the market each winter we must use the June draft as our most precious commodity and we treat those picks as such. This was a huge piece in this deal..
DRILLERS ACQUIRE SAIZ FROM TARPONS The Oklahoma Drillers have acquired veteran starter Jorge Saiz from the Florida Tarpons as well as minor league prospects Mitch Boozer (P) and SS Ignacio Camargo and the Tarpons 5th round draft choice in 2007. Oklahoma had to send top outfield prospect Zach Astor to Florida to complete the deal. Astor was the Drillers 3rd round draft choice out of Texas Tech in this June's draft. Saiz is 43-51 5.39 career as well as a 2 time World Champion with Detroit in 2002 and 2003. He has struck out 845 in 874 IP with 323 walks and 909 hits. He was 7-8 4.69 with AAA Alamogordo this season. The 34-year-old was sent to AAA Stillwater. I didn't think Saiz would clear waivers. This looks like 'a lot' for one minor league player. And the draft pick was almost a bridge too far. But Astor is a guy Luis Mora and our scouts are far higher on than most others around the league. They're saying he's a potential 50 HR guy, which I think most are ok with but around the league no one thinks he'll make enough contact or enough solid contact to even hit .250. Our guys think he's a possible .275-.300 guy. He's just 21, and a horse at 6'3 200. He's a corner outfielder that needs a lot of work. No speed to speak of but has a very good arm and above average hands. His lack of range likely means he'll end up in left. He's another potential RH power bat.
AL POTW - Dan Goodman (BRK) 11-22 4 HR 12 RBI (.314-24-90) NL POTW Doug Schneider (KC) 15-27 2 HR 10 RBI (.330-20-82) RECORD: 1-5 (66-47) PLACE: 2nd 8.5 GB RUNS SCORED: 606 4th RUNS GIVEN UP: 492 t-2nd DEFENSE: .713 1st OWNER MOOD: Worried TARPON PLAYER OF THE MONTH Makata Hayashi .308/.410/.721 OPS 1.131 13 HR 31 RBI TARPON PITCHER OF THE MONTH Jorge Esparza 1-1 1.32 13.1 IP 6 H 19 K AAA PLAYER OF THE MONTH Cletus Owry (ALA) .409-8-42 (.312-19-80)

AL PLAYER OF THE MONTH Domenic Loetzsch (LV) .400-6-32 (.344-39-105)
NL PLAYER OF THE MONTH Chris Silverstone (SD) .348-17-32 (.309-38-87) Single month record for HR in ABA history AL PITCHER OF THE MONTH Winton Alward (DEN) 4-2 2.53 74 K 46.1 IP (14-6 2.96) NL PITCHER OF THE MONTH Geoff Philpott (TEX) 5-0 3.24 (8-5 4.95) AL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH Makata Hayashi (FLA) See above (.253-34-89) NL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH Damani Hargrow (POR) .343-8-21 (.292-22-67) JULY REVIEW STAT LEADERS Wow, back to back triple crowns? What a month he had. Speaking of triple crowns, Winton Alward has apparently put the league on notice. There have been 5 triple crowns in ABA history, only 1 pitching. Mike Olson in 1996 went 19-7 2.29 296 K for Jaxonville in winning his 3rd Koufax. He was a 4 time World Series Champion. The NL East is looking at being historically bad. Stunningly bad. It looks like the Central divisions will provide the only real pennant races this year. Frisco is cruising in the NL West although Portland has had a great 2 months. 27-28 on June 1st they've gone 35-19 since. They own the NL in almost every offensive category while at the same time they are quite literally last in almost every single pitching/defense category except for K's. ERA, Bullpen ERA, RA, Hits, Opp Avg, BABIP Defense. Their .321 BABIP as a TEAM is insane. Detroit has gotten hot. To be honest their roster is so much deeper 1-25 than ours, for now. I think the Barlow deal changes everything about this organization from a development perspective. I'll be shocked if we don't have the top-ranked, or second best minors system in the game. Memphis and Chicago appear to be taking it to the end while Vegas has wrapped up the West on August 1st. We are 7.5 up on Alaska for the 2nd WC spot and I absolutely expect this team to win one of the wild card positions regardless of the trade. We have talent enough to capably fill the holes we opened.
