From the Commissioner’s Office

There have been some changes at the organisational level in the offseason between the 1901 and 1902 Footnote League seasons. They are as follows:
  • The Philadelphia Phillies ownership has been transferred from Nick Tichnor to Quinn Carlson, effective 19/10/1901.
  • The Milwaukee Brewers franchise has been moved to St Louis and will be called the Browns.
  • The Cleveland Blues will now be called the Cleveland Bronchos.

  • BABIP: .325 v .352 (for MLB combined)

Some pretty weird anomalies here. I believe that might stem from the BABIP being set at .294 as opposed to the actual league figure of .325. Will be more diligent in setting this from this point on.

There’s No Crying in Baseball – late 1901 Offseason Trades

  • BOS traded P Joe Hoerner (2-0, 2.29 ERA) to BLA for SS Rey Quinones (.304 / .306 / .391 / 4 RBI) and minor league 2B Ryan Raburn.
  • STL surprised many when they traded LF Charlie James (.382 / .397 / .541 / NL-best 5 HR / 97 RBI and Platinum Stick winner) and minor league C Rob Johnson to PHI for 29-year-old 2B Hobe Ferris (.261 / .277 / .394 / 1 HR / 62 RBI).
  • CLE sent SS JT Riddle (.337 / .352 / .433 / 72 RBI) to PIT for P Tommy Byrne (1-1, 2.55) and minor league C Chris Turner.
  • CIN swapped P Mike Marshall (3-4, 7.03) and a 4th round pick for another one of STL’s championship heroes, RF Paul Dade (.398 / .435 / .566 / 1 HR / 48 RBI), along with RP Frank Gabler (0-0, 5.40) and minor league P Joe Callahan.
  • In a crosstown switch, the Beaneaters sent P Teddy Higuera (2-0, 3.27) and 2B John Kennedy to the Americans, getting LF Frank Thomas (.235 / .236 / .275 / 6 RBI) in return. Later that month the two would be at it again, with SP Joe Hatten (15-11, 4.98) now an American and minor league SS Bill Spiers a Beaneater.
  • CIN traded gun 3B Christian Colon (.377 / .423 / .481 / 77 RBI) and minor league C Terry McGriff to CHC for P Dave Tobik (1-1, 2.53).
  • P Darren Holmes (3-3, 3.60) and minor league C Orlando McFarlane were dealt by the Tigers, getting 3B Eddie Kasko (.308 / .354 / .388 / 57 RBI) from the White Sox.
  • The Americans traded away closer Don Ferrarese (0-7, 4.68 / 1 SV) to the Reds and got SP Ed Wells (2-8, 5.04) and minor league P Mickey Scott. The two teams did another swap the following day, with 1B George Scott and SS Arnold Hauser headed to Cincy and Ryan Roberts on his way to Beantown.
  • The Americans were busy, weren’t they. This time they offloaded 1B Garrett Jones to New York for 3B Bob Dillinger.
  • The Reds moved RF Emil Frisk (.293 / .382 / .396 / 34 RBI) and P Joe Moeller, who spent most of the year on the IL, to the Pale Hose for Gold Glove SS Mike Benjamin (.323 / .353 / .543 / 5.8 WAR / AL best 108 RBI) and rookie P Cal McLish.
  • And a big one right at the year’s end to finish us off, once again involving the two Boston clubs. The Americans got promising hurler Casey Fossum, 3B/RF Jack Rothrock (.346 / .393 / .531 / 17 RBI), plus minor leaguers SS Charles Gipson and OF Joey Rickard, and sent SP Orlando ‘El Duque’ Hernandez (10-13, 4.11) and reliever Al Nipper to the Beaneaters.

1902 Preseason

A few matters of note in the early part of 1902.

The Beaneaters continued their busy offseason in the trade market, shipping catcher Red Dooin (.332 / .344 / .472 / 32 RBI) and minor league outfielder Hub Walker to Cleveland in return for outfielder Brett Gardner. Cleveland also acquired starting pitchers Ben Cantwell (13-15, 4.46) and Matt Moore (13-9, 4.31) from Brooklyn in exchange for 2B Heinie Wagner.

The Cards offloaded another one of their championship heroes, sending C Verne Clemons (.432 / .469 / .571 / 76 RBI) to Pittsburgh and receiving second baseman Tony Graffanino (.320 / .374 / .413 / 1 HR / 28 RBI) in return.

Some new faces to the FL to keep an eye out for. The A’s won the bidding war for boom SP Fred Glade, locking him down with an FL record $2680 for one year. A 3-year contract valued at just under $7k procured highly-touted starter Chappie McFarland for the Beaneaters, who also picked up 1B / OF Leon Durham. Brooklyn added solid RF Mike Shannon to their squad, the Americans landed phenom OF Homer Smoot, while gun relievers Ham Iburg and Jim St. Vrain were snapped up by the Phillies and Pirates on big money deals.

Spring Training was disastrous for a number of clubs, with the A’s losing SP Dallas Braden (13-10, 3.45) for the year with a torn rotator cuff, Baltimore’s Cy Vorhees going down with an ulnar tear that will see him miss the entire 1902 season, and the Reds will be without reliever Dan Schatzeder (6-2, 3.17, 1 SV) until 1903 after he suffered the dreaded torn labrum.

So with all these comings and goings, who were the winners and losers?

17 April, 1902: Play ball!

Well let’s hope for another season like the previous one. If the experts are to be believed, the NL is where all the action is going to be this year:

I'm switching over to the full historic replay uniforms from this point on. Just seems slightly more authentic and is way easier to coordinate. Shoutout to Skyballer 455 for his great mod work!
