If you thought last week was bad, this week was worse. 2-5, including a sweep at the hands of the Gothams, and now a 5 game deficit in the Fed race. For the 13-game home stand, the Chiefs had a record of 4-9. Their overall record at home now stands at 9-12. Fortunately, the next 14 games are away from Chicago, starting with today's Memorial Day doubleheader in Detroit. A doubleheader that suddenly looms quite large in importance.

In the bad week, there were some good hitting performances. In addition to Bird, Hampton, and Layton, Ron Rattigan and Cliff Moss added home runs of their own. Hank Barnett, though, had a week that he would sooner forget--hitting just .167. ![]() It's fair to say that the pitching in May has not been good overall. Red Hampton, in particular, has had an horrific month: 1-5 with an ERA of 8.19. In 40 innings, he has allowed 52 hits, 5 home runs, 25 walks, and has only struck out 12 batters. Hampton was the losing pitcher in yesterday's 10-3 loss to the Gothams, after which manager Joe Ward said that Hampton would be removed from the starting rotation, at least for now. Charlie Bingham has been good in his role as the first arm out of the bullpen, and so Max Plourde will assume the 5th starter's role.
