Barnes Makes It .511!
Incredible Hitting Season Sets New Standard In Game

Name: 1876 - Barnes.png

Size: 73.5 KB

Just when everyone thought he was slowing down, the greatest hitter the game has seen set a standard of hitting that no one ever thought possible. Ross Barnes of the Washington club finished the year hitting .511, meaning he got a base hit more then half the times he had an official at bat.

Other numbers that accommodate this unbelievable finish incredible finish include 218 hits, 32 doubles, and 19 triples. Barnes also scored 111 runs with an OPS of 1.22. The numbers are truly staggering and the star second baseman finished the year strong making it obvious that this was a accomplishment he really wanted. Barnes went 9 for 14 in his last three games pulling well above the .500 mark after for a very short time he had slipped to .498.

"It is a mark that no one thought possible and I can almost guarantee that no one will approach this mark again." said manager Nick Young. "We should all take the time to appreciate his talent."

Barnes himself refuses to talk about the batting mark as his club has more work to do. The Senators for the second time in their history won the pennant and now have a World Series to look forward for the championship, something the club won in the inaugural 1871 season.

Regardless, it is a moment that the game should take a pause and appreciate. Surely the rules of the game will also be looked at to make hitting and batting more balanced, but the genius shown by Barnes this season undoubtedly will go down in legend. The 26 year old now has 769 hits in his career and will surely collect his 4th MVP award this offseason.

World Series Preparation In High Gear
Washington and Philadelphia Finish With Identical Records

The annual battle between the games two pennant winners has become one of the most popular events in the nation. Each year countless articles and debates fill all social circles as a new champion of the national game prepares to be crowned.

This year it is Philadelphia and Washington that will do the honors. Two cities close in proximity but quite bitter to one another prepare for a best of seven. The Nationals have already one the title once, and now the team has waited and fought to make it all the way back. In waiting are the defending pennant winning Philadelphia club that wants to make right what they failed to do last year for their first title.

Ross Barnes and Lip Pike will hold the obsession of the nation as likely the two biggest stars in the game face off against each other to see who can perform when it matters the most.

The league President William Hulbert has already dubbed the matchup, the "Great Fall Classic.'

Battle Of Stars Ends In Washington Title
Nationals Become First Club To Win Two Championships

It was billed battle of the baseball greats and even more so a fierce grudge match between two rival cities in Philadelphia and Washington. Both teams entered the classic series with identical records, and each in its own camp claimed that they had the best player in the game.

Ross Barnes is coming off his 218 hit season and is sure to win another MVP while player manager Lip Pike hit .443 with 88 RBI for the campaign. It would be the first time that two such stars would suit up opposite eachother with everything on the line.

The series was followed by countless Americans as store managers and cities tried to find a way to relay scores to their fans as quickly as they actually happened on the field. The opening game was emphatically taken by the Whites winning 13-3 before the Nationals evened the series with a 9-4 win. It is the ability of the Washington club to rebound after an embarrassing loss that was noteworthy.

In the Capital of the country the clubs faced off three times before record crowds. The Nats won game three easily and then took game four that was a very well played match with Joe Bordon beating Cy Bentley by the slim 3-2 score. With their backs to the wall, the Whites took game five in a sloppy game that ended 14-12 with Pike going 4-6 and scoring three times.

Game Six was back in Philadelphia and the Whites needed to win both remaining games. Joe Bordon won his third game of the series however and the visiting Nationals took the clincher 9-4 to become the first team to win a second championship, matching the won that they lifted in 1871.

As for the matchup for the ages, although both played well as expected, it was Barnes who won both the battle and the war. Pike hit .370 in the series with 4 RBI while Barnes .400 with 10 RBI. In a storybook like season, it was appropriate that Barnes would also lead his team to the top.

For the Whites, a second year of coming up short and once again the greatness of Lip Pike and his team, can not find a way to get him a championship now as he turns the page on another year and will be 32 next season.

Centerfielder Frank McCarton was named MVP of the series as he went 17 for 31 with a .548 average.

1877 Best Nine

Catcher - Deacon White - Washington Nationals

Deacon White has long been considered the most consistent and effective catcher in the game. No one has influenced the position more then White and as he comes off of another championship season, his reputation is as strong as ever. Last season White even added a new dimension to his game beyond his .433 average; she stole 36 bases. Class all around White has left a great imprint on the game.

First Base - Charley Jones - Louisville Colonels

They call him Baby as a monicker, the first of his kind for his childlike looks. Jones however has established himself in a very short time as one of the stars of the game and the best at his position. Jones hit .403 last year with 84 RBI and 4 home runs. He scored an eye-opening 111 runs in 96 games and is the toast of all of Kentucky.

Second Base - Ross Barnes - Washington Nationals

For the seventh year running, Barnes is the best second baseman in the game and likely the best hitter the game has ever seen. The four time MVP hit .511 last year and lead his club to the championship of the game. Generations will likely be talking about just how good he is.

Third Base - Ezra Sutton - Boston Red Caps

Good for a long while, Sutton finally makes the list of the best at his craft after another fine season. Sutton scored 81 runs and stole 26 bases and remains one of Harry Wrights most loyal players. He rarely makes an error on the field and no one will feel worse that the Boston club relinquished their pennant last season.

Shortstop - Levi Meyerle - Hartford Dark Blues

Still playing all over the field, Meyerle now has found his spot in the middle of the action at short. Levi hit .405 with 30 steals and his long limbs allow him to make the play in the hole that many others just can not. Good things have been happening in Hartford, and Meyerle is at the very center of the resurgence,

Left Field - Jim Foran - Boston Red Caps

Leading the league with six home runs Foran also managed to finish with a .401 average. As the role of George Wright disipates, Foran has become the power in the Boston lineup as the keen left fielder drove in 98 runs last season. Many are the debates around the country of who can hit the baseball farther, Gat Stires or Jim Foran.

Center Field - Jim O'Rourke - Cincinnati Red Stockings

With 110 runs scored 33 doubles, O'Rourke has made himself the face of the new Cincinnati club. O'Rourke is an outgoing competitor who likes to talk throughout the nine innings of work, most of the times with the fans. Still the 26 year old is a genuine talent and makes this list for the first time over the likes of Paul Hines of Chicago.

Right Field - Lip Pike - Philadelphia Whites

The only thing alluding Pike in his career is a championship. The Philly team that has now become just about the most followed in the nation won its second pennant but could not bring home the ultimate prize. Pike has proven to be a great manager and and outstanding talent even as he turns 31 years of age. He hit .443 and lead the league in slugging and OPS.

Pitcher - Tommy Bond - Philadelphia Whites

In a season where pitching really took a black eye, young Tommy Bond of Philadelphia has proven his talent at 20 years of age is legit. After winning 23 games at 19 years old last season and 17 more this year, the right hander has 56 wins before he turns 21. Many this ranking is based more on potential, but the Irishman is someone that batters are finding it hard to hit against.

1877 American League Preview

1. Boston Red Caps
Last year: 53-43
Manager: Harry Wright
Ball Park: South End Grounds
Predicted Record: 55-41

After two years of winning the pennant, the Red Caps took a step back in 1876 to Washington and look to get their form back this season. The biggest change should be the phasing out of legend Albert Spalding from the rotation as the star seems to have more focus off the field then on it. Sam Weaver and Jim Brtt will now try and hold opposing batters down. Jim Foran and Ezra Sutton are the core of the linenup and George Wright has seen age move him to second base and to the lead off spot. Boston still hads loads of talent and Harry Wright at the helm which for many should be good enough to get the pennant back in 1877.

2. Hartford Dark Blues
Last season: 54-42
Manager: Al Barker
Ball Park: Union Grounds
Predicted Record: 52-44

Like Spalding in Boston, George Zettlein and his age has moved him out of the starting pitching role but the Blues have young Joe Blong who they feel could be a star. Blong was used sparingly in this first year but will be the anchor as Hartford tries for their first pennant. Levi Meyerle and Tom York lead the lineup that will have more pressure on it after Bob Fergunsen decided to pitch instead of hit due to a long history of nagging injuries. Respect needs to come on the field for this team.

3. Philadelphia Athletics
Last year: 56-40
Manager: Dick McBride
Ball Park: Jefferson Street Grounds
Predicted Record: 44-52

Dick McBride is still part of the pitching mix as he has been since the first season but like most teams, the A's have found an 'ace' they need to lean on. It is Tricky Nichols for this team and the 26 year old will have his chance to make a real name for himself. The lineup is of concern as a true star is lacking and numerous role players have not stepped up to carry the offense. Unfortunately many see the A's 56 win season last year as an aberration and dont expect a winning record in 1877.

4. Washington Nationals
Last year: 63-33
Manager: Nick Young
Ball Park: Olympics Ground
Predicted Record: 49-47

No team has repeated as champions and that task falls on the hands of the Nationals who are coming off of a dream season. MVP Ross Barnes continues his dominance while star pitcher Bobby Mathews has lead the league in wins all six years the league has existed. Deacon White deserves more credit then he gets as does manager Nick Young. Washington has never had a losing season and has won over 60 games each of the last two years. Critics expect them to slow down and some point, but the Nats are eagerly looking for another banner season.

5. Keokuk Westerns
Last season: 27-69
Manager: Nate Berkenstock
Ball Park: Perry Park
Predicted Finish: 46-50

The press and the scouts love to anoint the games newest star and this year it is without a doubt the top pick in the country, Laurie Reis. The 18 year old is said to be an emerging star and will head the rotation in Keokuk to make a 27 win team much more relevant. John Morrill was the rookie of the year last season and Black Jack Burdock is a fan favorite and competent talent at 2nd base. Pitching will be the name of the game for the Westerns as John Cassidy and John Greason support the sky high expectations that Reis brings to a desperate club.

6. St. Louis Brown Stockings
Last Season: 38-58
Manager: Jamari Arms
Ball Park: Grand Avenue Park
Predicted Finish: 24-72

Everyone is picking the Brown Stockings to finish at the bottom of the league and some wonder if they will be able to win even 30 games. Hugh O'Neil battled his but off last season and shows signs of success as a 23 year old starter. The lineup is abysmal however with no source of production that could be hoped for. Al Thake and Harry Berthrong are decent players but are not in the realistic role of leading an entire offense. It could be a very long season in St. Louis and the Browns are in real danger of losing fan share to the cross town rival Red Stockings.

1877 National League Preview

1. Chicago White Stockings
Last Season: 54-42 (2nd)
Manager: Charlie Pabor
Ball Park: 23rd Street Grounds
Predicted Record: 60-36

Chicago remains among the most consistent and well run frachises in the game even if the overall results are lacking. True the club should have won more then just one pennant by now with stars like Cap Anson and Al Pratt. Still to be up or near the top every season is not an easy task. Manager Charlie Pabor assures his fans that this is the year that the club will put it all together again. Rookie pitcher Dory Dean enters the rotation and the offense should continue to punish opponents. Why cant Chicago win more?

2. Louisville Grays
Last Season: 44-52
Manager: Bill Lennon
Ball Park: Lousville Baseball Park
Predicted record: 50-46

Jimmy Hallinan drove in a record number of runs last season and at first base Charley Jones may be the best at his position. It is with these two anchors that the Grays hope to compete in 1877. On the mound is the ageless wonder Cherokee Fisher who lead the league with 27 wins last season and doesnt seem to be slowing down. The Grays by most accounts are a good team but not a great one and there should be tangible improvement from the underachieving finish last season.

3. New York Mutuals
Last Season: 51-45
Manager: Joe Lemmens
Ball Park: Union Grounds
Predicted Finish: 53-43

Cal McVey has won 44 games in two years and has now become the best two way player in the game. He will anchor a staff that remains thin with inconsistent Candy Cummings behind him. New York is a pressure cooker and fans are hungry for a pennant again. Bill Boyd will have to find his batting eye again while nothing but promise surrounds new young prospect Mike Dorgan. At 23 Dorgan will start in right field and was the 6th pick in this years draft. The Mutuals believe they have what it takes to overcome Philadelphia and Chicago.

4. Cincinnati Reds
Last Season: 52-44 (3rd)
Manager: John Riker
Ball Park: Avenue Grounds
Predicted Finish: 51-45

Orator Jim O'Rourke is already a star and the most popular man in Ohio finishing with a 5,0 WAR. The Red Stockings however are not satisfied wit mediocrity and want to chase a pennant; Thus the club made the first trade of its kind sending a 24 year old outfielder out of town for the 35 year old Asa Brainard, Brainard will join George "Grin" Bradley as the Reds hope to build a strong staff that can tame great NL lineups. The club is showing good ambition and promise but this will be a telling year of what direction they are really taking.

5. Philadelphia Whites
Last Season: 63-33 (1st)
Manager: Lip Pike
Ball Park: Jefferson Street Grounds
Predicted Record: 59-37

The competition has gotten better around them but after 63 wins last season, who can expect this team to slow down. The deep disappointment of losing twice to American League teams in the World Series has to motivate Lip Pike and his team, to finally win it all. Twenty year old Tommy Bond is ready for stardom as the new darling pitcher of the league while Jimmy Wood and Gat Stires continue to be offensive machines that defy age and time. The Whites have a great chance of winning their third pennant in a row and one has to really marvel how Lip Pike both plays and manages at such a high level.

6. Philadelphia Centennials
Last Season: 40-56 (6th)
Manager: Lew Carl
Ball Park: Centennial Grounds
Predicted Record: 45-51

Trying to find space in the crowded baseball landscape of Philadelphia is not easy, still the Centennials seemed determined to make it work. Holly Hollingshead is the new leadoff man and hopes to energize an offense that was shut down too many times. Lew Brown and Jack Remsen are fine talents but neither has made the superstar impact the lineup needs. On the mound the team parted with Asa Brainard and now have trusted Pud Galvin again to finally live up to his potential and be the ace he was expected to be. The talent isnt always really there, but the hope surely is.

7. St. Louis Red Stockings
Last Season: 29-67 (7th)
Manager: Chris Davis
Ball Park: Red Stockings Baseball Park
Predicted Record: 39-57

The Red Stockings are also hoping that a fresh new arm can change their fortunes. Rookie Bobby Mitchell comes to the club and the Ohio native is only 21. This club never had an ace pitcher like this before and it will be worthwhile to see if the kid can handle the responsibility. Charlie Gould is a fine first baseman and likely the most popular man in St. Louis, however like their crosstown rival Browns, this team has quite a long way to go before they are competitive.

Deacon Poised For His Best Start
Star Catcher Hits For Cycle On Opening Day

There is few better days for any American then the opening day of the baseball season. Even more so in Washington as the Nationals raised their flag and celebrated a championship well deserved from the year before. Such was the case on a overcast day at Olympic Grounds as the Philadelphia Athletics came to town.

All eyes remained on the most popular star that remains Ross Barnes. Fans showed their appreciation as the second baseman is coming off an MVP season in which he hit .511. On this day however Banres would not be the center of the story for once; the great Washington catcher Deacon White would steal the scene.

White would start his season with a ringing double and then single in his second at bat. In the 6th inning the Deacon would hit a triple on a long drive to center field. In his fourth and most dramatic at bat in the eight, White would finish his perfect day with a man on and a towering two run home run that had him finish the rare feat of hitting for the 'cycle'.

Only two players had done it before him and the taste for the fans was even sweeter as the Nats won the opener by the score of 6-3. White did not slow down in his next two games and in fact has gone 10 for 13 at the plate and looks poised for his best hitting season yet. White is a career .363 hitter and took home the league MVP in 1875.

He remains one of the most popular players on and off the field as he stands by his convictions and beliefs and demonstrates true gentleman qualities at all times. Never will you hear a curse word or a complaint from the 29 year old veteran. He has taken a back seat to Barnes on many an occasion but the lack of attention does not hinder him. He is a big a part as anyone in the two championships the club has managed to win, now of course going for three.

Fans prepare for another grand season in Washington.

Hartford Carries Over Momentum
Rebound Season of 76 Has Turned Into Hot Start in 77

There were a number of publications last season including this one that were noticing a baseball resurgence in Hartford. With a new home the local club had created quite a following and even more so was showing signs of a well put together outfit. Finishing third with 54 wins wasnt something to sneer at and manager Al Barker looked for better things in 1877; dare to even possibly think of a pennant.

Well 1877 has indeed come and the Dark Blues have responded in an excellent way. The club finished the month of April winning six of seven games and are the early pace setters in the division. George Zettlein has stepped away from the rotation and the two young arms, Amos Booth and Joe Blong, have combined to go 5-0 and are showcasing some true command when they take the field

To go along with the arms is a lineup that is leading the league early in runs per game and is also tops in an underappreciated metric; that of baserunning. Bob Fergunsen is doing double duty as he now pitches but still finds time to hit at the top of the order. Levi Meyerle is hitting a nice .333 to start the season and right in the middle of the order is the bat of Robert Armstrong. Armstrong, a career .236 hitter is getting his chance to play and is hitting .423 to start the campaign rewarding his managers confidence.

The Boston club has gotten off to a rocky start and Washington may be a bit hung over from last season. This great game of our could provide any number of surprises and in the early spring days, there may just be a path for glory coming out of Connecticut this season.

Pitching Is Back!
Early Returns From 1877 Season Show Offense Down

The numbers that the 1876 season created doe hitters was surely a joy for the casual spectators to watch but concern throughout the game that offense and batting was too easy was a prevalent topic in the recent offseason.

In closed door meetings the league adopted a few new rules to allow hitters to get back on track with the most significant being that a batter would be charged with a strike on a foul ball. Defenses also improved with better positioning that included the second baseman playing more of the bag and in the hole.

The numbers do not lie and hitting is down to a .260 clip miles away from where it ended last season at .332. Pitching ERA's have fallen to 2.50 in comparison to over 4 last season. No doubt also adding to the cause of the pitcher has been an influx of new talent to the league and pitchers that throw harder and have more movement on their balls. The old original regime lead by the likes of Al Splading seem to be taking back seat. Spalding himself now works exclusively as a reliever.

Name: 1877 - pitch.png

The best of the new batch surely seems to be Laurie Reis of Keokuk who has already pitched an amazing three shutouts on the short season. Terry Larkin of Philadelphia and Joe Blong of Hartford are also among other young arms that seem to be turning the tide.

Even Ross Barnes is hitting a modest .308 over the first two full months of the season.

For the Love Of The Game
King of Cincinnati Defeating Father Time

Most adults at the age of 35 have long left games behind them and have settled down with children and a more relaxed life. In a game that sees mostly kids under the age of 25 dominate the headlines, there is an exception to all of this still roaming the outfield in Cincinnati.

Steve King has never missed a ballgame in his career playing in 426 straight. he lead the National league with a .451 batting average last season including being first in OBP at .459. He has already scored 375 yards in his career along with 135 doubles, 43 of them which came last season. He more then holds his own on the field with the young folk and his experience in the outfield often sees him get to the ball sooner then others due to his great anticipation off the bat.

The Cincinnati club has seen an incredible resurgence in both following and play on the field. This season they lead the league with a 16-6 record and hope they can fight through the pennant race all season long. King has a central role as a mentor and a positive influence to his teammates and is someone that everyone appreciates, including manager Jon Riker.

Name: 1877- King.png
Views: 340
Size: 150.7 KB

When questions and talk come about to King about slowing down, he has not intention to consider the option.

"What is happening here in Cincinnati is something special. This is the center of the baseball world there really are no better fans then what we have." King says with a smile, "I would have to be crazy to walk away from this."

The Reds of course could not agree more, and would be crazy to take the field without him.

A Frustrated Star In St. Louis
O'Neil May Never Reach Potential On Putrid Club

We rightfully so often spend much of our time and ink chronicling the winners and young talent of the game throughout this publication. Often times however some names seem to come and go and careers take all kinds of turns and often not for the best. This time we wanted to focus on a great talent who came into the league with all the hope of a new spring, but now languishes in the doldrums of losing baseball and frustration that in many cases only this grand old game can provide.

Hugh O'Neil came into the league at the ripe age of 22 as the banner name for the new club taking root in St. Louis, the Brown Stockings. He was a cant miss prospect with a spectacular arm and body and a gleam of confidence coming out of Brooklyn New York. He was drafted 8th overall by the mighty Chicago club.

Name: 1877 - hugh O'neil.png
Views: 349
Size: 91.0 KB

"I couldn't wait to get started with such a successful club." remembers O'Neil. Chicago was going to be the perfect fit. However very shortly after the expansion draft came and the Browns scooped up O'Neil and bought out his contract making him their ace for the 1875 season.

In his first season the right hander lost 20 games but showed promise with a 2.61 ERA. After the club lost 63 times in his first season, they lost 58 times more last year as O'Neil had another decent season but saw his numbers elevate along with the rest of the league. This season the Browns seem to be continuing to go in the wrong direction and the biggest victim of their demise seems to be O'Neil.

The now 24 year old is showing a record of 1-12 despite his excellent 2.89 ERA. He has struck out 34 men but cant seem to get anyone to support him with some runs. The Browns are 8 and 33 on the new season and are playing some of the worst baseball anyone has seen at this level.

No one is talking about O'Neil anymore despite how good he can play. A losing side of this magnitude is a source of ridicule no matter the individual performances. What might have been if the young star had had the opportunity to stay in Chicago upon his entry to the league.

This game can indeed be a cruel one. Will this young talent end up being a distant footnote to baseball history despite his obvious talent? His confidence going forward will tell us much of that answer.

Looking At League Attendance
Resurgent Cincinnati Leads The Way

It had been mentioned last season that the capital of the baseball world appeared to be Philadelphia. With three teams at their disposal, Philly fans were heading to the parks in bunches to support some of the very best players in the game.

Although this fact has not changed much, a new city has stepped to the forefront in 1877. The Cincinnati Reds currently lead the league in attendance calculated per team. The Reds have had over 35,000 fans fill their park this year, more then 5,000 fans to the next closest team. In contrast they have almost doubled the attendance numbers coming out of Hartford.

The enthusiasm for the Reds is real as not only does the team have a rich history prior to the league being formed, but also their great play on the field is attracting generations of fans. The Reds of course currently sit atop of the National League and dreams of their first pennant is being felt all over the Ohio landscape. In another impressive surprise, the afore mentioned St. Louis Browns are actually third in attendance this year, all this despite their teams miserable record; hats off to their fans.

The Birth Of The Strike Out
Game Evolves As St. Louis Pitcher Leads Way

Obviously the birth of a new league has come a long way as far as following and financial gain. Along the way, teams have become more competitive then ever and have found revolutionary ways to play the game at the highest level.

In the past the pitchers job was to throw a ball that the batter could surely hit, even having the hitter call what type of pitch he wanted thrown. As the game rose the stakes of each game, the pitcher often wanted nothing to do with giving the hitter any sort of advantage. Even more modern thinking was the complete deception of the hitter to the point where he swings and misses and the count moves to the defenses favor, or even better a strike out is recorded.

Frank Fleet came into the league in 1871 just trying to survive. He took root in Chicago with Charlie Pabor and his powerful club. In 1873 he was given his chance and threw over 258 innings of good work as the club won the championship. In 1875 Fleet was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the expansion draft and from the start he became the best arm in the organization. With a poor club Fleet has lost 95 games in his career but he has become the master of deception and the trend maker when it comes to the strikeout.

No one has struck out more batters in the history of the league then Fleet who has lead the league in all the past three seasons including a record total of 101 last year. He average 4 K per nine innings, an incredible feet that many other pitchers in the league took notice of. Soon the strikeout became more of a weapon and the likes of Cherokee Fisher and Cy Bentley honed their game to get the swing and the miss.

There are those minds of the old thinking that say a strikeout is not how the game was indented to be played and consider it unsportsmanlike. These voices however are not a deterrent for the biggest stars of the game who care about outs, and the safest out is the one where the ball is never put into play.

There is no doubt that the strikeout is here to stay.

The Art Of The Two-way
Four Players Have Mastered Pitching And Hitting

Of course when you become a master of one particular skill, it is surely difficult to be just as good at another. Time and effort constraints would seem to make it close to impossible for a ballplayer to become and elite hitter while at the same time excel at hitting. To date many have tried, but there are four notable names that truly have changed the way the game is played.

Bobby Ferguson - If there ever was a jack of all trades it would be Ferguson. He has taken up pitching for the first time in his career at 32 year sold and has thrown 193 innings on the season. He has compiled a hard luck 9-15 record but has a good 3.22 ERA and has struck out 49 batters and is a big part of the Hartford ballclub continual inprovement. For years Ferguson has been an outstanding batter with 22 career triples, 248 RBI and 326 runs scored. Without a doubt he is one of the very best defensive players in the league thus his nickname "death to flying things" winning the gold glove at third three times. And oh yes, he also managed for three years running. There is nothing this man can not do.

John McDermott - A .354 career hitter as well as a World Series MVP award in 1872, McDermott is one of the smoothest hitters the league has seen. Twice he lead the league in doubles including his 38 last season. In his second year of action Joe began to pitch wit purpose and won 14 games. Although his pitching career hasnt been the greatest with a 51-81 career record, McDermott continues to hold a spot in the rotation and made 20 starts this past season.

Cal McVey- The league was utterly shocked and even tried to stop McVey from switching from fulltime hitter to a pitcher in 1875. McVey said he always had a love for pitching and he did silence many of his doubters as a hurler winning over 20 games three years running and this season holding a great 2.02 ERA. McVey really has embraced his role having earned over 15 WAR in three short years. Of course as a hitter McVey's 1874 season will go down in history a she hit .404 with a 4.0 WAR and still holds a career .371 average with 450 runs scored. Others would indeed argue that if he didnt pitch fulltime, McVey as a hitter would surely surpass them all. He is the biggest reason why the Mutuals are in contention for a pennant every single year.

John Cassidy - Finally there is the 22 year old Cassidy who has really come in the scene this year. The Brooklyn native sits at the top of the Westerns lineup and has surpassed even Deacon White hitting .455 thus far this year. He has 21 steals and 31 RBI and can disrupt any game with his ability to set the table. Cassidy also holds a 2.53 ERA with minimal offensive support striking out 59 batters this year alone. Cassidy is a rising star in every way and shouldnt be overlooked for as maybe the very best two way talent there ever was.

National League Frenzy
Big Four Setting Up Dramatic Finish

With the Washington Club doing just fine in the American League as they have almost lead wire to wire to gain another pennant, the National league truly is anyone's to win.

The four big clubs, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and now Cincinnati have been up and down the ladder all season and each of the four teams are just two games behind the current leader. Each club has lead the league at some point during this season.

Chicago has won 9 of 10 games in extra innings while the Reds have slowed down a bit after they made their mark with a 14-3 month of May. The defending champion Whites are looking to do it again and won 14 games in August sit on top of the pack. New York has played the best defense in the league and is getting another fine season from McVey and Candy Cummings.

The excitement can be maddening, but is of course compelling to watch.

Brainard To Retire At End Of Season
Count Of The Mound Leaves Strong Legacy

This offseason the league was stunned when the Philadelphia Centennials traded respected ace pitcher Asa Brainard to the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds were ecstatic to add such a veteran arm to their rotation and the 'Count" did not disappoint posting a fine season and helping the Reds stay close in the pennant race. Brainard has a 17-10 record with a 2.83 ERA in 30 starts and has been dependable and resilient for the team.

Still this week the 36 year old who has amassed 107 career wins decided to head back to his hometown of Albany New York upon the end of the campaign. Brainard says that he has given everything that he had to the game and that his time to live a simple life has come. Asa threw over 2000 innings in his career and struck out 228 batters. He spent most of his time playing for losing teams and twice lead the league in losses. His guile on the mound however is something that wont be soon forgotten and is the reason the right hander earned the nickname of Count.

There is still some hope for the Reds who sit three games behind Philadelphia in the standings. It would be quite the prize for the veteran to finish his playing days competing in the World Series, something he has never experienced. Brainard jus may be the highest profile player thus far to announce his retirement, although Al Spalding of Boston is all bit retired even if he has not made it official appearing in only 13 games this season.

Larkin Throws 19 Innings In Win
Twenty One Year Old Sets New Standard In Longevity

Its one thing to throw a complete game, which is what most all of the great arms in the game expect to do on any given day. Its a complete other thing to do what Terry Larkin did this month in a 4-3 victory for the Philadelphia Centennials over Keokuk. The game itself was very noteworthy as the two teams battled for 19 full innings and almost 5 hours before Philadelphia won it. It was the longest game in league history.

The Centennials have not had the best of seasons, but they have been a club that plays hard and is eager to be competitive. Depth has been an issue all season and on this day, manager Lew Carl had little or no options other then Larkin to throw the complete game. As the game wore on however many wondered if the kid could really keep going. The 80 degree temperature at Centennial Grounds surely didnt help.

But by all accounts, as the game progressed, Larkin became more determined to stay in the game and earn the win. Everyone in the park looked at the dugout in anticipation before the start of every inning to see if the pitcher would come out for another try. On this day Larkin would let no one take his place, even if he threw 30 innings.

The exhausted lad was finally rewarded by his teammates with the very late win. The numbers however are astounding as Larkin threw 216 pitches and faced 66 batters. Surely this game will be remembered for a long while and likely will never be repeated on a baseball field again.

The heart and determination on this day of Terry Larkin, will also not be forgotten as his personal outstanding season continues, showcasing a 2.00 ERA in 43 starts and now totaling 382 innings for the season.

White Claims Triple Crown
Nationals Star Has Historic Season

Last year Ross Barnes did some things no one tough possible for a baseball season as the Washington Nationals won the pennant. This yea they won the pennant again in dramatic fashion by a single game but it was Deacon White instead of Barnes who reached a historic mark.

White becomes the first batter to lead his league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in; the feat has been properly named as the Triple Crown. White hit an incredible .458 this year even more so impressive with batting averages down throughout the game. He also drove in 86 runs to lead all hitters and has 440 RBI for his career, third most of any player. He also managed to hit three home runs to tie for the league lead rounding off his dominance.

All should also remember that White is considered the best catcher defensively in the game as he has now caught 495 games and no pitcher can claim that he hasn't improved their performances.

"There is not only no player in the league like Deacon," says pitcher Bobby Matthews, "there is no other man like him period. I think I would retire if I had to throw to anyone else." Matthews of course has 188 wins as a pitcher, more then anyone else by a wide margin.

The Nationals now look to repeat as champions and become the first team ever to do so. They took the flag on the final weekend of the season outlasting the Hartford club by one game as they defeated the lowly Brown Stockings on the last day of the schedule.

Whites Take Third Pennant In A Row
Match Last Years Record and Look To Finally Win Series

The call throughout Philadelphia continues to be one accord, "Win One For Pike". The Whites of Philadelphia finished with the best record in either league and matched their record from last year ending with 63 wins.

Still there is great uneasiness heading into the World Series. Philadelphia has made it and lost the last two seasons and face the exact opponent who knocked them out last year, the Washington Nationals. At the heart of it all for the team is player manager Lip Pike who had another incredible season as a player and as a skipper, but has yet to be rewarded with the World Championship.

His players seem determined to make sure this is finally the year they achieve their goal. Pike has turned 32 years old and realizes this just may be his final chance. Baseball of course can be a cruel game, but fate may finally be on the side of the starstruck club that deserves better.

The two teams split their 8 games this season evenly but Pike struggled against Washington hitting only .208.

Do It For Pike
Philadelphia Crowns Whites As Champions

The Philadelphia Whites thrilled their fans and proved to why they are the most popular team in baseball as they easily defeated the Washington Nations in five games to earn their first championship. Their third trip to the series proved to be the charm.

All the emotion seemed to surround player/manager Lip Pike who after a brilliant career as both a player and a leader finally has a title. Pike and the Whites were so close losing the last two seasons but this time around, the players were not going to let their manager down.

Pike hit just .263 in the series but his pitchers lead by Tommy Bond did a phenomenal job on Washington hitting holding both Ross Barnes and batting champion Deacon White to a combined .200 average and 8 hits in the series. Philly was also picked up by some great hitting as Jimmy earned some recognition as the MVP of the series as he had 11 hits in 22 times at bat and drove in three runs in the five games.

Cy Bentley closed out the clinching game in his only start defeating the great Bobby Mathews in game five. The Nationals fail to become the first team to win two championships in a row but surely also have a respect for the Whites and especially Lip Pike who has been a stalwart in the game.

Phlly fans all chanted "we did it for Pike" as the calling cry carried across town as celebrations seemed to go on for days. Good things seem to surely come to those who wait.

1878 Best Nine

Catcher - Deacon White - Washington Nationals

White won his second MVP award and has set the standard for a longtime running at the position. His excellence was almost unbelievable hitting .458 and leading the league in OPS as well at 1.13. Deacon was instrumental in another Washington pennant and as he turns 30, there really is no slowdown in his game.

First Base - John Clapp - Louisville Grays

Clapp has come on strong in the league even as many have not taken notice. He lead the league in hits last season with 163 and hit a very impressive .416 for Louisville. At around 200 pounds, Clapp is a great target at first for his infield and the 26 year old hopes to be part of a resurgence in Kentucky.

Second Base - John Peters - Boston Red Caps

The player to finally knock off Ross Barnes at second is a Harry Wright prodigy who deserves this honor. He stole 30 bags last season with 51 RBI from the leadoff spot and sits as a .318 career hitter. New rules seem to be working against Barnes and Boston will be very glad to see one of their own unseat the Washington star. Peters is an excellent fielder as well.

Shortstop - Bob Ferguson - Milwaukee Grays

Speaking of great fielders, none is better then Ferguson who is death to all flying things. He has won 5 gold gloves and has many batters purposely hitting the ball away from him. He also hit .307 with 22 steals and will try to be as fan friendly in Wisconsin as he was in Hartford. It is great to see defense get rewarded in the ranking.

Third Base - Cal McVey - New York Mutuals

A .369 career hitter the great talent lead the league in WAR again at 5.1 and of course does all of this while winning the outstanding pitcher award. There really is nothing that McVey can not do on a baseball field and surely his legend will be talked about for generations to come. Yes he is even fast, stealing 31 bases and legging out 14 triples.

Left Field - Paul Hines - Chicago White Stockings

Impossible to believe that he is only 22, Hines has made himself an anchor in Chicago. He scored 48 runs and drove in 54 with 17 triples and a .344 career average. There is a pennant drought for this club and when a player like Hines keep improving, anything is really possible.

Center Field - Frank McCarton - Washington Nationals

If clutch was a statistic, McCarton surely would be the leader as his focus and anticipation in big spots is becoming familiar. He hit .370 last season with 61 RBI and 76 runs scored. He also is only 23 years old but his resume would make a great career even if he quit tomorrow. Frank is the secret reason why the Washington club has been the best club overall in the leagues history.

Right Field - Orator Shafer - Cincinnati Reds

Really coming into his own this season his selection here may be a bit of a surprise for those outside Ohio. Shafer drove in 64 runs while hitting .334 and was a central reason why the Reds were in the race well into October. All of his numbers were career highs as the Philadelphia native has figuired something out in a big way at the plate.

Pitcher - Tommy Bond - Philadelphia Whites

The only representative of the champions, Bond wins this distinction for the second straight season as he went 27-6 with a 2.20 ERA. Their were other worthy choices like Laurie Reis and Cal McVey, but it was Bond who took the ball in the biggest spots including 2 wins in the World Series. Bond struck out 90 and has made countless Irishmen proud with his poise and winning confidence.

1878 American League Preview

Boston Red Caps
Record Last season: 50-46 (3rd)
Manager: Harry Wright
Ball Park: South End Grounds
Predicted Finish: 1st

Since winning it all in 1875, the Red Caps just cant compete with Washington and last year were also surpassed by Hartford. It is hard to see anything changing this season but many forecasters think that Boston could indeed put things all together. John Peters and Jim Foran are the new stars in Beantown with Ezra Sutton coming back at short, the 28 year old has played every single game in franchise history. And the biggest news for the club, throughout the winter, is Albert Spalding will start games again after appearing in only 14 games last season solely in relief.

Milwaukee Grays
Record Last Season: 54-42 (2nd)
Manager: Al Barker
Ball Park: Milwaukee Baseball Grounds
Predicted Finish: 2nd

Moving out of Hartford, Wisconsin now has its first professional club and the anticipation couldn't be greater. Joe Blong brings his 22 win season to the table and all Grays pitchers will be confident as this team has some of the best defense in the league. Some say Levi Meyerle has slowed down a tad and his manager seems to want to hit him at the bottom of the order, but as always at only 28 years of age, talent seems to have the final word in this sport. Manager Al Barker really seems to be heading this roster in the right direction.

Philadelphia Athletics
Last Season Record; 33-63 (5th)
Manager: Dick McBride
Ball Park: Jefferson Street Grounds
Predicted Finish: 3rd

What a disaster of a season for the Athletics as they lost 63 games and Dick McBride somehow kept his job as manager. Scotland native Jim McCormick has come on to save the day as the top draft pick and immediately the ace of the pitching staff. Joe McDermott is the best hitter on the club and George Hall is still a fine talent but the A's have very little depth and even more so seem to lack confidence as they now are clearly the step child of the champion club from across town. Many expect an improvement and surely things can get much worse, but is it really all wishful thinking for this once very proud franchise?

Washington Nationals
Last Season Record: 55-41 (1st)
Manager: Nick Young
Ball Park: Olympic Grounds
Predicted Finish: 4th

Very little seems to change in Washington. The Nationals won another pennant and the club made close to no changes in hopes of doing the very same for the 1878 season. Ross Barnes has clearly been impacted by the new foul ball rules and many feel he will never put up the same numbers he used to. No real worry however as Deacon White more then picked up the slack with an incredible season and an MVP award. Bobby Matthews failed to lead the league in wins for the first time but still won 24 times, even as his World Series performance was scrutinized. Can the Nats really win their third pennant in a row? Or is the competition finally to the point where they can enter this year with confidence of a different AL outcome?

Keokuk Westerns
Last season record: 48-48 (4th)
Manager: Nate Berkenstock
Ball Park: Perry Park
Predicted Finish: 6th

The Westerns found a gem last season in Laurie Reis who had an ERA under 1.00 and had it all working at only 19 years old. There are some rumors of arm trouble however and the scouts have been keen on them. New catcher King Kelly was surprised to drop in the amatuer draft and the young talent is being touted as much for his talent as he is for his personality. In the meantime other big cities are sniffing around this ballclub, hoping to lure them out of the modest surroundings of Keokuk. In the opinion of this publication, there is an important place from small town baseball in the nation.

St. Louis Brown Stockings
Last season record: 19-77 (6th)
Manager: Jamari Arms
Ball Park: Sportsmans Park
Predicted Finish: 5th

Losing 77 games and failing to win 20 would seem to make an franchise worry if they would even be around for another year. This is not the case at all with the Brown Stockings. Their enigmatic owner won over local officials and has built the best stadium for baseball that anyone has imagined in the new multifacility Sportsmans Park. The new park even forced the Red Stockings out of town and established this Browns team as the representative of the gateway to the West. The newest star is of course John Ward, who was the top pick in the draft and surely will attract crowds from miles away. Vast improvement is expected from this team, and times are not so bad at all for this team.

National League Preview

Chicago White Stockings
Last Season Record: 61-35 (2nd)
Manager: Charlie Pabor
Ball Park: Lake Front Park
Predicted Finish:1st

Chicago has come oh so close but just can not seem to get over the final hurdle and get the better of Philadelphia. Charlie Pabor has always been a players manager but some feel he should put a bigger fire under this group of talented players. Almost of the same roster comes back from last year with Paul Hines, Ed Pinkham, and Cap Anson as good a trio any team could hope for. Not to be overlooked, first baseman Joe Start lead the league in both runs scored and stolen bases. This team seems to be too good to be held down and go in as the favorites.

Louisville Grays
Last season record: 49-47 (5th)
Manager: Bill Lennon
Ball Park: Louisville Baseball Park
Predicted Finish: 7th

First year player Charley Jones has earned the name 'baby' and will be placed nicely right in centerfield as the city of Louisville enters the big leagues. Still many feel this club just doesnt have enough especially in the pitching department as Fred Corey will try and become the ace and Chrerokee Fisher remains as tough as ever but but he has thrown over 2500 innings and may be in steep decline. Joe Clapp is a true star at first base but the defense overall on the club isnt prominent and the team is the oldest in the league. Despite the predictions, this team did finish with a winning record last year in their final season in St. Louis.

New York Mutuals
Last season record: 57-39 (3rd)
Manager: Joe Lemmens
Ball Park: Union Grounds
Predicted Finish: 5th

If there has ever been a club that has been more dependent on one star player, we must have missed it. The Mutuals keep on winning and fighting for the pennant mostly behind Cal McVey who is not only their best hitter but their best pitcher. The club really has not made many reinforcements behind him frustrating the fanbase; Candy Cummings is the only other dependable arm on the roster, and Cummings is only as good as his curve ball is on a given day. Ned Williamson is the strong rookie who will try and make Brooklyn love him while Bill Boyd looks for a rebound season. Many are expecting the Mutuals to regress but take that for what it is worth.

Cincinnati Reds
Last season record: 57-39 (4th)
Manager: Jon Riker
Ball Park: Avenue Grounds
Predicted Finish: 6th

The Reds have built themselves up to contenders in impressive fashion and it seemed like the dream would become reality last season, but the club faltered in September. Will White takes his place as the ace of the staff and has earned the nickname "Whoop La" for the stuff on his throws. The club also has one of the best outfields in the league with Orator Schafer and Jim O'Rourke thrilling fans; Shafer especially had a break out season with a 3.4 WAR and .334 average. Steve King comes base for yet another year at the age of 35 and will bat leadoff. The ageless one hit .361 last season and loves the game too much to give it up. The Reds are an interesting club, but their shine seems to have dulled a bit. Buttercup is a 19 year old top prospect that brings a good skillset.

Philadelphia Whites
Last season record: 63-33 (1st)
Manager: Lip Pike
Ball Park: Jefferson Street Grounds
Predicted Finish: 2nd

Finally a championship along with three pennants in a row making the Whites one of the most prestigious clubs in the games short history. The club comes back in tact looking for number four as Tommy Bond continues to be a true ace and excellent in the big game. Gat Stires and Jimmy Wood continue to stay consistent a propel the offense while Lip Pike may not be the player he used to be, but still surely is one of the smartest and most respected. Jim Devlin and Cy Bentley make close out a great threesome in the rotation and 22 year old Fog Horn Bradley is itching to get his chance. The team is becoming the most popular in the nation and the sympathetic win for Pike last season may have taken the pressure off the club this year. The Whites likely will do what they also seem to do, raise the NL flag in a tight race.

Philadelphia Centennials
Last season record: 45-51 (6th)
Manager: Lew Carl
Ball Park: Centennial Grounds
Predicted Finish: 3rd

Many really like this roster and are expecting vast improvement from the little brother club in Philadelphia. A very interesting figure has entered the league by the name of The Only Nolan at 20 years old. Nolan can hit a bit but his ability as a pitcher is what makes him unique and as he joins Terry Larkin and Pud Gallvin, Lew Carl has quite a pitching staff to work with. Hitting is where the questions remain with Will Foley and Lew Brown good players but not great. The club also has some questions on defense and in regard to speed on the bases. Can the arms carry the day? Some feel that they can.

Providence Grays
Last season record: 33-63
Manager: Chris Davis
Ball Park: Messer Street Grounds
Predicted Finish: 4th

Leaving St. Louis for Providence, this franchise has taken a bit of a risk but has a nice new ballpark to call their own. Many are saying that top pick Roger Conner is the best hitter to enter the league in years and at 20 years old the anticipation is great. Charlie Gould is a good veteran presence to lead the young lad as he has accumulated 4 WAR in the last two seasons. Lefty Bobby Mitchell had a good first season even though he lost 30 times with a 2.86 ERA and threw over 380 inning, however there is no doubt the Ohio native has the right stuff. Although a shot at a pennant race just wont happen for this team, a new environment some excellent young talent may allow them to fight out of last place and take a real meaningful step this year.
