August 1913: Christy Unlikely to Win 300

Christy Matthewson won 373 games in the MLB but he has not fared as well in the AHBL. After winning 3 Ace Awards in 1904, 1905 and 1906, Matthewson has cooled off considerably. In recent years he has been around.500 and his stuff down to a 3 rating. He has not been helped by playing on mediocre Boston Bayonets teams. He is currently almost 33 years old and is 226-209.

September 1913: New Ballparks

Many of the ABHL franchises have begun to move into more modern ballparks. I am moving the teams with more money first including St. Louis, Cambridge and, surprisingly, Worcester. Winning definitely seems to affect the financial situation much more than market size.

Worcester has moved into Heart of the Commonwealth Park

And Cambridge has moved into John F. Kennedy Park

October 1913: Cinderella Kids

The 1913 season could go down as the greatest in AHBL history. 2 amazing races. In the Cartwright, Worcester seemed to have it all the way until the hapless Philadelphia Founders who had never had a winning season before, won 9 straight and took the pennant. In the end, they were a full 10 games better than they should have been, one of the luckiest seasons I have seen,

And the race in the Wheaton was even better. Four teams: Chicago, Cleveland, Louisville and New Orleans all battled for the top spot, usually within a game of each other. In the end, the Firemen would repeat but only topping Cleveland and Louisville (which had perhaps the best pitching and the worst hitting in the league) by a game and New Orleans by 2.

October 1913

One for the ages as the Philadelphia Founders complete one of the luckiest and strangest championships in memory. Despite a regular season in which they were some 10 games better than they should have been, the Founders made to the series and then came back from down 3-1 to Chicago. They won a 14 inning Game 5 and then cruised to victory in Games 6 and 7 for the improbable win. Home Run Baker carried the team hitting .500 (15 for 30) with 3 home runs.

May 1914: Ruth No-Hitter

The Bambino has vaulted to the top of the Southside Strikers' rotation at the age of 19 and on April 17 pitched a no-hitter against Louisville. After coming up in late 1913 and not pitching all that well, he has a more respectable 2.92 ERA so far this year. Not sure about that picture though...

June 1914: Lots of Burns

Perhaps the Detroit Pinstripes should rename themselves the Burnsies, In one of those strange coincidences, both MLB players from the 1920s named George Burns were drafted by Detroit and are now hitting 3rd and 4th in the lineup. Both players had productive major league careers and they have helped Detroit move into 3rd place, not bad for the struggling club.

July 1914: Here Come the Strikers

Babe Ruth is now 14-7 and it may be the beginning of a long run for the Southside Strikers. The team is in first place and are contenders for the first time since Honus Wagner and the club won the 1903 World Series more than a decade ago. Clyde Milan, Wally Schang, Del Gainer and Buck Herzog are all quality players.

August 1914: Matty Headed to Jazzcats

Christy Matthewson's career has been a good one but nothing like his time in the MLB. After winning three ACE awards early in his career he became a borderline starter for Boston and has now been traded to New Orleans, The Jazzcats have made him their closer, although that doesn't mean much in 1914.

September 1914: Clarke Nears 3000

Fred Clarke is 41 years old and still going strong. He is just 7 hits away from number 3000 and is leading the Cartwright League in home runs with 10. He's still a key member of the Worcester Hearts. As usual, Cambridge and Worcester are vying for the league lead after last year's surprise title from Philadelphia seems like a one-year fluke (the Founders are just 64-71 this year.

October 1914: Tex Hits for 32 Straight

Tex McDonald did not have much of an MLB career but he has become a big star in the AHBL for the Philadelphia Founders. The 2B hit for 32 straight games, the best streak so far in league history. Fred Clarke also got his 3,000th hit in September.

Both leagues had great pennant races with Worcester topping Cambridge on the last day of the season and Babe Ruth and the Southside Strikers edging out New Orleans. The Babe won 24 games in 1914, the best in the Wheaton League. Walter Johnson won 29 for Cambridge but could not win down the home stretch for the team when they really needed it.
