Almost There: Providence On Cusp of World Championship Series Triumph After 5-3 Win
The Providence Grays got a strong performance from pitcher Tricky Nichols, who stymied the visiting Chicago White Stockings en route to a win, 5-3, in Game 4 of the World Championship Series today. The White Stockings could never get a bead on the right-handed Nichols, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball. The Grays now hold a 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Paul Hines, who finished 2nd in the NL in home runs with 1 last year, aided the Providence cause with a run-scoring double in the bottom of the first. For the game, the center fielder was 2-4 with a double.
"We don't have much margin for error now," White Stockings manager Bob Ferguson said. "We need to figure out the problem and fix it, immediately."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Messer Street Grounds in Providence.

Providence Wins 1878 World Championship Series!
The Providence Grays were good enough to get past the Chicago White Stockings at Messer Street Grounds today and secure the 1st championship in franchise history.
"When you wear Grays on your shirt, you're good at something," Providence skipper Tom York told the press.
Grays center fielder Paul Hines was named MVP of the series after he went .435 with 1 home run and 7 runs batted in.
"It feels totally incredible," Hines said. "I could live to 1,000 years old and I'd remember this moment."
The new champions capped off a great season with a 8-7 victory over the White Stockings to win the World Championship Series 4-1.

Don't think i will have time to keep writing recaps.
So i will post the standings, news and playoffs.
Working overtime at work and might be going back to school.
Don't ask me why but my job is paying so what the hell.
Anyway it looks like we have a rematch for the championship.

04/30/2023
Had to rerun the awards as i did not submit the Hank Aaron award winner.
It was Deacon White. I think the custom award should show up on league leaders and awards page.
I just use the player with the highest war to choose the Hank Aaron award.
The Hank Aaron award is for the best hitter since pitchers have Cy Young.
Both pitchers and positional players are eligible for the MVP award.
Anyway i dont think much change.
I think John Peters getting a glove glove at shortstop is about it.

Pivotal Game 5 Goes to Host Grays, 3-2
The Providence Grays nearly wasted a strong game from starter Bobby Mathews, but were saved by some timely hitting in a 10th inning walk-off win over the Chicago White Stockings today.
Mathews pitched well in the 3-2 win at Messer Street Grounds. He threw 10.0 innings of 6-hit ball. The win allowed Providence to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 World Championship Series.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the tenth inning, when Providence right fielder Tom York, facing Frank Hankinson, had a run-scoring double. It gave the Grays the 3-2 win.
"Put a star next to this win," Mathews said.
Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at Lake Front Park in Chicago.

Providence Wins it All
It was all about winning for the Providence Grays -- and win they did.
There was nothing fancy in how they went about it, players said, they just prepared mentally and physically and then went out and played baseball.
"We did the little things right and we did the big things right," said center fielder Paul Hines, who was named series MVP. "Now we're the league champions."
Providence defeated the Chicago White Stockings by a score of 11-9 at Lake Front Park to take the series 4-2.
"Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you make your own luck," said Providence manager George Wright. "We got lucky a few times, but mostly we did the right things by being prepared for each game and playing the game the way it's meant to be played."

Finished 1880 season.
Saw the leagues first no hitter thrown by Monte Ward.
Chicago finished in first for the 4th time in 5 years. But so far only 2 championships.
Deacon White is all time hits leader with 917 while Cap Anson has 916.
Tommy Bond is closing in on Al Spalding's all time win record of 223.
Bond has 194.
Jim McCormick set the season strikeout record with 316.
Really wish i had the time to better recap the season.
Will post result as soon as i can.
Like i said its not the simming that takes so long its just my schedule.

Blues Clip White Stockings 6-5 in WCS Contest
The Cleveland Blues went the distance and then some at Lake Front Park today to drag themselves back into a tie with the Chicago White Stockings.
It took 11 innings to settle Game 2 of the World Championship Series, but Cleveland eventually took the 6-5 win behind the efforts of starting pitcher Frank Hankinson. Hankinson threw 10.0 innings of 5-hit ball to aid the Cleveland cause. The clubs are now tied 1-1 in their best-of-7 series.
Hankinson went the distance -- and then some -- for the Blues, throwing 10 innings of 5-hit ball against the White Stockings, striking out 2.
"This kind of game is tough on the heart," said winning manager Jim McCormick.
The next game is set to be played for Thursday, October 7th , 1880 at League Park I in Cleveland.

Cleveland Takes 2-1 Series Lead Behind 5 RBIs from 1B Phillips
When the games really matter, the Cleveland Blues put on their best show, beating the Chicago White Stockings by a final score of 11-10 today. Bill Phillips went 4-5 with a triple, a double, and 2 singles. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Cleveland now leads Chicago 2-1 in the best-of-7 affair.
A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 3rd and two out in the bottom of the sixth inning. That's when catcher Doc Kennedy hit a run-scoring single. The Blues went on to win.
"Getting a lot of baserunners and getting some timely hits, it's a good combination," said Kennedy.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park I in Cleveland.

Chicago Win to Pull Even With Cleveland
The Chicago White Stockings topped the Cleveland Blues by the score of 8-2 and moved into a 2-2 tie in the World Championship Series today. The largest share of the credit belongs to Chicago starter Fred Goldsmith, who threw 9.0 innings of 8-hit ball in the win.
Cap Anson provided a timely hit. The Chicago first baseman delivered a run-scoring triple in the top of the ninth inning to put the White Stockings on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count.
"We were firing on all cylinders today," said White Stockings manager Cap Anson.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at League Park I in Cleveland.

The Chicago White Stockings have reached the mountaintop, capturing the 1880 World Championship Series today. They defeated the Cleveland Blues 5-4 at Lake Front Park to officially wrap up the series 4-2.
Asked how it feels to be champion, left fielder Abner Dalrymple was to the point.
"It feels great, like a million bucks. I'm so happy right now, not just for me but for all the guys," he said. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions."
The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. Chicago finished the regular season 56-30 and claimed first place in the National League.

Monte Ward throws League's first no-hitter

Ward Tosses No-Hitter Against Buffalo
Monte Ward relied on excellent pitch selection and pinpoint control to hold Buffalo hitless in a 5-0 win at Messer Street Grounds today.
"Nobody goes out to pitch a no-hitter," he said later. "We just go out and try to get a win. A 10-9 win is better than a 1-0 loss. My pitching buddies might not be too happy giving up nine runs but a win is a win. The key to it today was I mixed my pitches well. I kept the Bisons off balance and guessing the whole game."
The 20-year-old starter rung up 4 strikeouts and no walks in whipping the Bisons.
"When a guy is throwing strikes the way he was and is locating well, it is going to be a long day for any club," Buffalo skipper Sam Crane said.
This season Ward has worked 326.2 innings with 148 strikeouts en route to a 17-18 record and a 2.15 ERA.

Its mid May in the 1881 season and Providence has lost Old Hoss Radbourn for 5-6 weeks.
Surprise has been George Derby of the Detroit Wolverines with a 7-1 record and 2.48 era.
Of course Chicago is in first again with a 11-2 record followed by Detroit at 10-2 but a lot of baseball still to be played for 1881.
In my previous sim, Chicago won 6 championships in 7 years.
Never realized 19th century Chicago was that good.
I knew early 1900s Chicago was good.
Then again there hasn't been that much challenge in the competition.
