Rockies Offseason: Final Free-Agent Signings Bolster Pitching & Clubhouse!

General Manager Caleb Thorne and the Colorado Rockies front office have concluded their free agency work, putting the final touches on the roster before Spring Training kicks into full gear. The offseason has been characterized by Thorne's consistent low-risk, high-reward strategy, and these latest signings are no exception, bringing in both pitching depth and significant veteran presence.

Pitching Depth Continues to Grow
The Rockies have continued to build out their pitching staff, particularly with an eye on organizational depth, by signing a familiar name to a minor league deal.
--RP Lance McCullers: The Rockies have inked right-handed reliever Lance McCullers to a minor league contract. McCullers brings a wealth of Major League experience, having pitched in parts of six big league seasons with a career record of 27-31 and a solid 3.23 ERA. He boasts an impressive 439 strikeouts in 521.1 innings pitched, making him a high-upside addition who could contribute to the big league bullpen if needed.

A Major Infield & Clubhouse Addition: Melido Perez!
Perhaps the most significant signing of the entire offseason for the Rockies is the acquisition of starting pitcher Melido Perez. Perez, who pitched last season for the New York Yankees, joins the Rockies on a Major League deal to the tune of three-years at $2.8 million per year.
--SP Melido Perez: Perez is a substantial addition to the rotation. In his career he holds a 69-71 record with a 4.31 ERA and has accumulated 949 strikeouts in 1157.1 innings of work. Beyond his stats on the mound, Perez is known for being a charismatic leader in the clubhouse and is described as off-the-charts-intelligent, possessing an amazing rapport with teammates. His presence is expected to provide veteran stability and a positive influence in the clubhouse.

Caleb Thorne's Vision in Action
These final free-agent moves underscore Caleb Thorne's multifaceted approach to building the Colorado Rockies. The signing of McCullers highlighted the continued focus on affordable, high-upside talent for organizational depth, while the addition of Melido Perez brings established Major League experience and crucial leadership qualities that Thorne values highly.

Espn breaking news: Rockies deal gooden to twins in major swing!

ESPN Headquarters --February 10, 1994
The MLB Hot Stove just got significantly hotter! The Colorado Rockies and Minnesota Twins have confirmed a major trade today that send a former CY Young winner to the Twin Cities while the Rockies continue to stock up on young talent. After weeks of rumors, this deal is finally done, setting a new tone for both clubs as Spring Training approaches.

The Blockbuster Exchange
The Colorado Rockies have officially traded 29-year-old right-handed pitcher Dwight Gooden to the Minnesota Twins. In return, the Rockies receive a package of three promising players:
--David Weathers (RHP, 24 years old): A right-handed pitcher with one career save, a 5-7 record, and a 5.53 ERA. He adds depth to the Rockies pitching staff.
--Marty Cordova (LF, 24 years old): a left fielder who brings athleticism and a developing bat to Colorado's outfield.
--Alex S. Gonzalez (SS, 20 years old): A highly regarded young shortstop prospect, further strengthening the Rockies' pipeline of middle infield talent.

Gooden's Rockies Chapter Closes
"Doc" Gooden was a prominent, high-profile acquisition for the Rockies in their inaugural season. His career record stands at an impressive 158-83 with a 3.11 ERA over 304 starts. While his tenure in Colorado was brief, hi s presence brought significant attention to the expansion club.

Caleb Thorne on the Strategic Move
Rockies General Manager Caleb Thorne, known for his analytical and long-term approach, shed light on the strategic thinking behind this significant trade:
"I've been mulling trade offers for Dwight for several weeks now, but just not committing to pull the trigger for various reasons, foremost because Dwight is an excellent pitcher and great veteran presence in the clubhouse. Once we signed Melido Perez, it made this decision a bit easier. This trade allows us to acquire three young players who fit our long-term vision and complement our existing talent. Weathers and Cordova are closer to Major League readiness, while Gonzalez represents high-upside potential for our future.

ESPN Baseball Tonight Analysis
CHIP CALLAHAN: "Alright, Peter Gammons, that's a head-turner! Dwight Gooden to the Twins! What do you make of this move by Caleb Thorne and the Rockies?"

PETER GAMMONS: "Chip, it's classic Caleb Thorne. He's not afraid to move a big name if it fits his blueprint. Gooden is still a valuable arm, a great veteran, but the Rockies are clearly prioritizing youth and flexibility. Getting Weathers, Cordova and Gonzalez -- that's a significant haul of young talent. Weathers can contribute now, Cordova has offensive upside, and Gonzalez... he's a true long-term play at shortstop, complementing their top pick, Alex Rodriguez. Thorne's quote about Melido Perez making the decision easier is key. He sees Perez as filling the veteran rotation spot, allowing him to 'cash in' on Gooden for future assets. This isn't about winning now for Colorado, it's about building a sustainable contender over time."

CHIP CALLAHAN: "So a good move for both sides, then? Twins get a proven ace, Rockies get future pieces?"

PETER GAMMONS: "Exactly. For Minnesota, it's about adding a veteran presence to their rotation who can help them contend now. For the Rockies, it's a testament to Thorne's long-term vision. He's not just acquiring prospects; he's acquiring specific types of prospects that fit his analytical models and the unique challenges of playing at altitude. This trade further solidifies the Rockies' commitment to building from within, balancing immediate needs with a keen eye on the future."

Rockies Break Spring Training

Rockies Conclude Spring Training: Thorne & Company Have Decision to Make

The spring training season for the Colorado Rockies has officially wrapped up, and it was a busy one! Over the past several weeks, General Manager Caleb Thorne, Manager Dusty Rhodes, and their staff evaluated 50 players to determine the best 25 for their Opening Day roster. The team concluded its exhibition schedule with a 12-18 record, a period focused more on assessment and chemistry building than wins and losses.

Batting Stats: A Mix of Promise and Struggle
The Rockies' offense showed flashes of brilliance and areas for improvement.
--Ozzie Guillen hit a sterling .405 and had an OPS of 1.016 over 37 at bats during 25 games.

--Sandy Alomar Jr. hit .340 and had an OPS of .930 with 2 homers and 8 RBI

--The Sophomore Scott Rolen also hit 3 homers while hitting .224.

Pitching Stats: Arms Tested, Decision to be Made

--Dave Burba went 0-0 with 1 save and a 0.84 ERA over 10.2 innings
--David Weathers went 0-0 with a 1.04 ERA over 8.2 innings
--Mark Gardner went 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA over 13.1 innings
--Greg McMichael went 0-0 with 2 saves and a 2.13 ERA over 12.2 innings

--Sterling Hitchcock is recovering from Tommy John surgery went 0-0 with a 3.86 ERA over 4.2 innings.
--Melido Perez, the big free agent acquisition struggled going 1-2 with a 7.78 ERA over 19.2 innings

--Darryl Kile also struggled going 1-4 with a 7.47 ERA over 15.2 innings.

The team utilized a large number of pitchers to assess their readiness, so we'll see what things transpire for the front office as they try to select the top 10-12 pitchers for the staff.

Roster Decisions Loom
With 50 players vying for 25 spots, Caleb Thorne and Dusty Rhodes have some incredibly tough choices ahead. The performance in spring training has undoubtedly influenced these decisions, blending statistical output with player potential and fit within the team's overall strategy.

Rockies Win Opening Day! A Conversation from the Owner's Suite

The 1994 season has officially kicked off, and what a start for our Colorado Rockies! Mile High Stadium was absolutely rocking as the team hosted the Philadelphia Phillies for Opening Day.

Opening Day: From the Owner's Suite
(The owner's suite at Mile High Stadium is alive with the murmur of the crowd below. Arthur Sterling III is leaning forward in his seat, eyes glued to the field. Caleb Thorne stands nearby, a tablet in hand, but also intently watching the action.

Arthur Sterling III:
(As the Phillies score three in the top of the first) "Well, that's not exactly the start we envisioned, is it, Caleb? Gooden's gone, but it seems we still can't keep them off the scoreboard early. Three runs in the first for Philadelphia...that's a tough way to open."

Caleb Thorne: "It's a challenge, Mr. Sterling. The Phillies came out aggressive. But Melido Perez is settling in. He gave up those early hits, but he's got good composure. And our offense responded well in the bottom half."

(The Rockies score a run in the bottom of the first, making it 3-1)

Arthur Sterling:
"There we go! Jerry Browne with the double! See, that's what I like to see! We get punched, we punch back. This team's got some fight. What are your early impressions of the energy out there, Caleb? The crowd is electric!"

Caleb Thorne: "The attendance is phenomenal, Mr. Sterling --there has to be over 70,000 fans here for Opening Day. The energy is certainly translating to the dugout. We're seeing aggressive swings, and the defense look sharp early on. Browne, in particular, looks very comfortable at the plate and in the field"

(Later in the game, the Rockies have pulled ahead 4-3, and it's the bottom of the sixth)

Arthur Sterling III:
"Now this is the kind of game I was hoping for! Melido's battling on the mound, and we're getting those timely hits. Berroa's home run in the fourth was a beauty! That's the power we need at Mile High. And Browne, another double! He's a machine out there today."

Caleb Thorne: (Nodding, a hint of satisfaction) "Melido has been very efficient since that first inning. And that was a good piece of hitting from Berroa, capitalizing on the altitude. We're getting contributions across the lineup. Speaking of Melido..."

(On the field, Melido Perez steps to the plate with a runner on base. He rips a single, driving in a run.)

Arthur Sterling III: (Leaping to his feet, cheering) "He drives in a run! Melido Perez! The pitcher! I love it! That's the kind of hustle, the kind of professional at-bat you want to see. Makes it 5-3! That's a huge insurance run!"

Caleb Thorne: "Indeed, Mr. Sterling. That hit from Melido is exactly what we talk about -- a pitcher helping his cause with the bat when it matters. He was very focused on executing."

(In the top of the eighth, the Phillies score a run, making it 5-4. Jack Armstrong comes in to close it out in the ninth.)

Arthur Sterling III:
"Alright, Armstrong for the save. This is what it comes down to. One-run game. The nerves are setting in. This is why we pay these guys, Caleb. You feel good about this bullpen?"

Caleb Thorne: "Armstrong has proven he can handle high-leverage situations. His stuff is sharp. I think our bullpen may surprise some people."

(Armstrong gets the final out, and the crowd erupts.)

Arthur Sterling III:
(Slapping Caleb on the back, a wide grin on his face) "YES! A WIN! A HOME OPENING DAY WIN! What a game! Melido Perez, the Player of the Game, you called it! And Armstrong with the save! That's how you kick off the season, Caleb! That's how you show them what Rockies baseball is all about!"

[Caleb Thorne: (A rare, full smile) "A hard-fought victory, Mr. Sterling. The team showed resilience after a tough start, and key players delivered. A successful outcome for Opening Day. It sets a positive tone for the season ahead."

Game 2: Rockies Edge Phillies 5-4 for Second Straight Win
The Rockies kept the momentum rolling in game two, securing another tight 5-4 victory over Philadelphia. This game highlighted the team's resilience and ability to win close contests.

Starting pitcher Gil Heredia earned his first win of the season, navigating 6.0 innings and allowing four earned runs, including a grand slam by Phillies catcher Darren Daulton. The Rockies offense, however, continued to provide timely hitting. B.J. Surhoff delivered a clutch run-scoring single in the 5th inning, putting the Rockies ahead 5-0. Manager Dusty Rhodes commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."

The Rockies completed the sweep in dramatic fashion in game three, taking down the Phillies 9-8 in a back-and-forth slugfest.

Lance Johnson was the offensive star of the game, going 3-for-5 with a triple and two singles, scoring three runs and driving in two. His run-scoring single in the 8th inning was crucial to the Rockies' late rally. Geronimo Berroa continued his power display with his second home run of the series. The bullpen proved pivotal, with newly acquired Chuck Finley picking up his first win as a Rocky.

"Mile High Mike" O'Connell's Take: "A SWEEP! We're for real, folks!

"Mile High Mike" O'Connell:
"DENVER! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! A SWEEP! We just swept the Philadelphia Phillies at Mile High! Three-and-oh! That's how you start a season!

" I tell you what, this Caleb Thorne just might know what he's doing! That Melido Perez, the guy they signed, he's a gamer! Pitched well and then he gets a clutch hit! That's the kind of pitcher you want! And Geronimo Berroa already showing off that Mile High Power, two dingers in three games! Jerry Browne just keeps hitting, always on base.

"Then you get Gil Heredia battling in that second game, and B.J. Surhoff with the big hit! And finally, Lance Johnson in the finale! That guy is electric, hitting for average, triples, getting on base, driving in runs! That's a true leadoff man, folks! And Chuck Finley gets the win in relief!

"This isn't just luck, folks! This is a team that's hungry, they've got some veterans who know how to win, and they've got some young guys playing with fire! We're for real, folks! The Colorado Rockies are on the map, and we're just getting started! Get ready for a wild season!"

Colorado Navigates Rocky Road Trip Through Pittsburgh and Philly (1-5)

After an electrifying start at Mile High Stadium, our Colorado Rockies embarked on their first road trip of the 1994 season, a six-game swing through Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. It proved to be a challenging stretch for the young club, as they encountered tough competition and some heartbreaking finishes.

Pittsburgh Pirates Series (0-3)

Game 1: Pirates Win Thriller 7-5:
The Rockies held a lead in the ninth, looking for their fourth win to start the season, but the Pirates rallied dramatically. Chili Davis got things going with a solo home run, and then Orlando Merced delivered a crushing 3-run walk-off home run off Chuck Finley to seal the win for Pittsburgh. For Colorado, B.J. Surhoff hit his first home run of the season, and Derrick May added a 3-run shot.

Game 2: Colorado Dispatched, 3-2, by Pittsburgh
Another close contest that slipped away. The Rockies scored two in the first, but Pittsburgh chipped away. Orlando Merced hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth off Melido Perez, who took the loss despite a solid 6.0 innings, allowing only two earned runs. Jerry Browne and Lance Johnson each had key doubles for Colorado.

Game 3: Colorado Stopped, 12-5, by Pittsburgh
The Pirates completed the sweep in a high-scoring affair. Barry Bonds was the star for Pittsburgh going 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, and two walks, driving in two. The Rockies' offense struggled to keep pace, despite Geronimo Berroa's 3rd home run of the season in the ninth.

Philadelphia Phillies Series (1-2)

Game 1: Phillies Win 6-5
A frustrating loss for Colorado, as the Phillies rallied late. Ricky Jordan was the hero for Philadelphia with a 3-for-4 performance, including a home run and a double, driving in three. For the Rockies, Geronimo Berroa hit his fourth home run of the season, a 2-run shot in the first, but Jack Armstrong took the loss after giving up two 8th inning homers.

Game 2: Colorado Get 12-5 Win
The Rockies broke through in a big way, with Armando Reynoso leading the charge on the mound. Reynoso pitched 8.0 dominant innings, allowing only two runs on five hits while striking out six, earning his first win of the season and the Player of the Game honors. The offense exploded for 12 runs on 16 hits, including Sandy Alomar Jr.'s first home run of the year. Pat Listach also had a strong day, driving in two runs.

Game 3: Schilling Leads Philadelphia Past Colorado 4-1
The road trip concluded with a dominant performance from Phillies ace Curt Schilling, who held the Rockies to just one run on three hits over 8 innings Mickey Morandini broke the game open with a grand slam in the first inning of Darryl Kile, who took the loss.

"Mile High Mike" O'Connell's Take: "A Reality Check, But We Fought!"
"Alright, Denver, 'Mile High Mike' here, and let's not sugarcoat it: that road trip was a reality check! You go into Pittsburgh, and they walk you off, then they shut you down, and then Bonds crushes you. Ouch. They you get to Philly, and you drop the first one. That's a rough stretch, folks.

"But here's the deal: we fought! We got that big win in Philly behind Reynoso -- that kid looked like an ace out there! And the bats finally showed up that game, putting up a dozen runs! That's the offense we saw at home, and that's the offense we need more of!

"Yeah, Finley took a tough one, and Kile got lit up by that grand slam. And our offense went quiet in a couple of those game. That's baseball, especially for a second-year team. But we're 4-5, still close to .500. We're learning, we're adjusting. It's a long season, folks, and we'll be back at Mile High soon. This team's got grit, and they'll figure it out!"

Colorado Rockies: April Report

By Sarah Jenkins, Rockies Beat Writer
May 1, 1994

The month of April has concluded for the Colorado Rockies, and while it was a bit of a rollercoaster of highs and lows, the team finished with a respectable 13-11 record. This is a surprisingly competitive start for a franchise in only its second season.

The Rockies swept the Phillies at home to start the season and the outlook was bright for the young Rockies. The road was not kind to start the season as they lost five of six games to the Pirates and Phillies. Coming home for another homestand, the Rockies struggled in a series against the Expos losing two of three.

The Rockies sat at 4-6 with their expansion brothers, the Florida Marlins, coming to town. The Rockies swept through the Marlins scoring twenty runs in the three game set. They won their fifth game in a row defeating the Cubs in the first of a three game set to close their home stand 4-3. Unfortunately, the Cubs took the final two games of the series.

The Rockies headed out on the road to see if they could figure out how to win away from the thin air of Mile High Stadium. Things didn't go well to start as the Rockies were swept in St. Louis in a quick two game set. The Rockies then traveled to South Florida for a two game series. The outcome was the same as the three game series a few weeks prior. The Rockies earned the sweep with their first extra-inning game victory of the season. Colorado then headed to the Windy City to take on the Cubs in a three game series, the first two to wrap up the month. Taking the first two games of the series allowed the Rockies to finish the month of April with a winning record at 13-11.

"This month has been a real learning experience for us," said Manage Dusty Rhodes. "We've seen some incredible highs, like the sweep in Florida and the way we battled in Chicago. We've also had our tough moments. The key is that these guys are learning to compete every single day. They're showing grit, and that's all you can ask from a team in their second year of existence."

General Manager Caleb Thorne echoed those sentiments, emphasizing the long-term vision. "Finishing April with a winning record is encouraging," Thorne stated. "It validates a lot of the work we've put in to identify players who fit our system and can thrive in diverse environments. We can't put too much stock into a 24 game start, but it's encouraging. We're still evaluating and developing, and there will undoubtedly be more challenges ahead. But the team has demonstrated a resilience that bodes well for the future."

"Mile High Mike": Rockies Roaring Through May!

"Alright, alright, settle down, Denver! It's your man, 'Mile High Mike,' and let me tell you, I've got a smile on my face bigger than the Rocky Mountains with what our boys are doing in the early season! We finished April a respectable 13-11, and yeah, we stumbled a bit out of the gate in May, but then we put the pedal to the metal!

"We opened May still up in Chicago, trying to finish that Cubs series. And look, it wasn't pretty. We dropped that last game to the Cubbies, 6-5, a real heartbreaker. So, we started May with a loss, dropping to 13-12. Not the start you want, right?

"Then we came home for a quick two-game set against the Cards. Always a tough matchup. We battled hard, split the series right down the middle, the Rockies taking game one 13-9 and the Cards taking game two 7-6. That put us at 14-13. Still treading water, still figuring things out."

"But then, folks, THEN we hit the road, and something clicked! Something major!

"First, we went out to San Diego to face those Padres. And guess what? We took two out of three from them! That's a solid team, and we went in there and played some hard-nosed baseball winning 3-1 in 13 innings, losing 2-0 and winning 4-2. That bumped us up to 16-14!

"Next up, the San Francisco Giants. Another tough division opponent, and another road series where our boys showed up! We took two of three from the G-men! That's grit, folks, pure grit! Now we're rolling at 18-15!

"And then to cap it all off, we went into Houston and did the unthinkable: WE SWEPT THE ASTROS! Three games, three wins! We didn't just win; we dominated that series, showing everyone we mean business! That's the kind of statement you want to make when you're on the road.

"So, what does that mean for our Colorado Rockies? It means we finished that road trip on fire, and our record now sits at 21-15! Twenty-one wins, fifteen loses! For a second year team, and we're playing this kind of baseball! Who picked that?! Nobody, that's who!

"Now we're heading back to Mile High for a HUGE home series against those Los Angeles Dodgers. And let me tell you, the Rockies are coming home hot! The bats are alive, the pitching is settling in, and this team is playing with a confidence I haven't seen in a long, long time. Get ready, Denver, because the party at Mile High Stadium is just getting started!"

Live from Mile High: Bottom of the 11th vs. Dodgers!

(Sound of the crowd buzzing, faint organ music)
Greg Hamilton (Rockies Play-by-Play):
: "Welcome back to Mile High Stadium, where we are knotted up at one run apiece in the bottom of the eleventh inning. What a great pitching dual this has been, particularly from our starter, Armando Reynoso, and Orel Hershiser for the Dodgers, who just completed nine fantastic innings. But now, the Dodgers have brough in Brian Black and the Rockies have a chance to walk it of! Eddie Taubensee steps to the plate to pinch hit for Chuck Finley...

(Sound of bat crack)
Greg Hamilton:
"And Taubensee sends a shot! Deep to left field! That ball is heading for the gap...it's off the wall! Taubensee rounds first, he's heading for second, and he's in with a leadoff standup double! The Rockies have a runner is scoring position to start the eleventh!"

Sam Peterson (Color Commentator): "That's exactly what you want, Greg! You get a guy on second base, no outs, that puts all the pressure right on Black. He's got to be pinpoint now, can't afford a mistake. That's a veteran at-bat by Taubensee, just putting it where they ain't."

Greg Hamilton: "Indeed, Sam. Up next is Jerry Browne, who has already singled once tonight, and also hit a solo home run earlier to tie this game up in the ninth. Can he move Taubensee over?"

(Sound of bat crack)
Greg Hamilton:
"Browne hits a sharp grounder through the right side! That's a base hit! Taubensee holds at third, smart base running. He's not the most fleet of foot and you don't want to make the first out of the inning at home. So now we've got runners at the corners with nobody out! The tension here at Mile High is palpable, folks!"

Sam Peterson: "Pressure, pressure, pressure! That's how you manufacture runs, Greg. You get traffic on the bases, you make the pitcher work. Black's got to be careful now. Any wild pitch, any mistake, and the winning run is right there. This stadium is absolutely vibrating!"

Greg Hamilton: "And the Dodger' manager is out of the dugout, heading to the mound to talk with Brian Black. This is a crucial moment. The bases are not yet loaded, but the potential is there. And now walking to the plate, the speedy Lance Johnson!"

(Pitch)
Greg Hamilton:
"Johnson takes a strike on the outside corner. Black is trying to find his rhythm. Here's the 3-2 pitch...."

(Pitch, umpire calls ball four)
Greg Hamilton:
"And Johnson works a walk! The bases are LOADED for the Colorado Rockies in the bottom of the eleventh inning! This place is going absolutely wild, Sam!"

Sam Peterson: "Wow!" That's a huge walk, Greg! Johnson showed some great discipline there. Just worked the count, forced Black to throw strikes, and he couldn't. Now the bases are juiced, and the pressure is squarely on the pitcher. He's got nowhere to put anybody. He's got to challenge the next hitter, and that next hitter is Geronimo Berroa. Not necessarily the guy you want to challenge. This is what you play for, folks!"

Greg Hamilton: "The crowed is on its feet, a deafening roar here at Mile High! Bases loaded, nobody out in the bottom of the eleventh, tied at one. And walking to the plate, the left fielder, Geronimo Berroa! He's 1-for-4 tonight, with a walk, but this is the biggest at bat of the night. Black looks in for the sign...the wind-up...and the pitch!"

(Sound of loud, resounding CRACK of the bat followed by an explosion of crowd noise)

Greg Hamilton:
"SWING AND A DRIVE! DEEP LEFT FIELD! THAT BALL IS HIGH! THAT BALL IS DEEP! THAT BALL IS GONE! A GRAND SLAM! A GRAND SLAM FOR GERONIMO BERROA! THE ROCKIES WIN IT! THE ROCKIES WIN IT 5-1! Oh, the pandemonium at Mile High Stadium! What a finish! What a game! The Rockies take the series from the Los Angeles Dodgers on a walk-off grand slam from Geronimo Berroa!"

(Crowd cheers loudly, sustained roar, celebratory music plays)

Same Peterson:
"UNBELIEVABLE, GREG! UNBELIEVABLE! That's how you win a ballgame! Berroa just unloaded on that fastball. He didn't miss! Four runs, just like that! Black left one up, and Berroa didn't just hit it; he launched it! This team, Greg, they just don't quit! What a moment for this second year franchise, and what a moment for Berroa!"

Post-Game Interview with Geronimo Berroa
(Crowd noise slightly muffled, Greg Hamilton's voice clear)

Greg Hamilton:
"Geronimo, congratulations! What a swing! What a moment! Tell us what you were thinking when you stepped to the plate with the bases loaded there in the eleventh."

Geronimo Berroa: (Smiling, a little breathless) "Oh, man, Greg. I just want to hit ball hard. Pitcher, he give me one pitch, a fastball, and I just try to put good swing. Me teammates, they on base. I want to help them. Just hit hard. And...and is gone! Is grand slam! So happy!"

Greg Hamilton: "The crowd here, they absolutely erupted! What did it feel like rounding the bases, seeing all your teammates at home plate?"

Geronimo Berroa: "Oh, the fans, they amazing! Very loud. I feel...I feel so good. Like a dream. Teammates, they run to me, all jumping. Manager Dusty, he smile so big! We work hard, you know? This win, it very important for us. Show we can fight. Show we can win big games. Vamos Rockies!"

Greg Hamilton: "Thank you, Geronimo, and congratulations again! What a night!"

"Mile High Mike's" Final Thoughts
"You heard it, folks! You just heard it! Geronimo Berroa! A walk-off GRAND SLAM!" I'm telling you, you couldn't write a script like this! After losing the first game of the series, then taking the next two, and then pulling this off in extra innings?! This team has got heart, grit, and a flair for the dramatic! They're not just winning; they're winning in style! This is Mile High Magic, folks, pure and simple! The Rockies are now in first place in the NL West at 24-16! Twenty-four wins, sixteen loses! A franchise barely a month and half into their second season ever, and we're playing this kind of baseball! Who picked that?! Nobody, that's who!"

"Mile High Mike: Rockies Hit the Skids to End May!

"Alight, alright, Denver! It's your man, 'Mile High Mike,' and I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. May started out like a dream, but the end of the month? Man, that was a nightmare. We were flying high, going an incredible 11-5 to start the month, and after that wild 5-1 extra-inning win over the Dodgers on May 19th, we were sitting pretty in first place with a fantastic 24-16 record! The Mile High City was buzzing, everyone was dreaming big, But then, the wheels...they came off.

"After that high of taking down the Dodgers, we just couldn't keep that momentum going, even at home. We faced the Atlanta Braves for a three-game set, and those guys are no joke. We dropped two of three to them on our own turf. You never like to lose a home series, especially after the start we had.

"Then came the Cincinnati Reds for a four-game series. Another tough team, and another frustrating outcome. We lost three of four to them right here at Mile High. The bats went quiet at key moments, and the pitching just couldn't consistently hold them down. It was a tough pill to swallow, losing series like that on our own diamond.

"And then we hit the road, hoping a change of scenery would du us good. Boy, were we wrong. We traveled to Montreal to take on the Expos for a three-game series. And folks, there's no way to say it other than we got swept. Three games, three loses. The offense went cold, and the Expos just took care of business.

"And to add insult to injury, we then headed to New York to face the Mets for a three-game set that stretched into June 1st. And guess what? Another sweep. Three more loses. The final game, on June 1st, just sealed the deal on a brutal stretch of baseball. We left a lot of guys on base, and the opposing pitchers just kept us in check.

"So, let's tally it up. After starting the month going 11-5 and taking over first place, we finished the back half of May and that first day of June with a dismal 2-11 record. That's right, two wins and eleven losses in our last thirteen games. That kind of slide drops our overall record to 26-27 as we finally get ready to come back to Mile High Stadium.

"It's a rough reminder that this is still an expansion team in its second full season, folks. We're going to have these peaks and valleys. This was s deep valley. The challenge now is to dig ourselves out, find that fire we had early in the month, and get back to playing Rockies' baseball. It's a long season, and we've got to turn the page quickly. We'll be back at Mile High soon, and we need our fans to bring the noise more than ever!"

Rockies Navigate First June Homestand

By Isabelle "Izzy" Garcia, The Denver Posts
As the Colorado Rockies returned to Mile High Stadium to begin June, the six-game homestand against the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets provided a critical assessment of the team's trajectory following a challenging conclusion to May. The club finished this stretch with a 4-2 record, moving their overall record to 31-29. This performance, while not flawless, signals a renewed competitive drive and offers valuable insights into the team's evolving dynamics.

The Pirates Series (2-1)
Game 1: Rockies 3 Pirates 2
The opener was a significant psychological boost. In a tightly contested battle, the Rockies secured a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth, driven by Ozzie Guillen's clutch run-scoring single. This provided tangible evidence of the team's ability to execute in high-leverage situations. Pat Listach's perfect 3-for-3 performance further underscored the potential for consistent offensive contributions within the lineup.

Game 2: Pirates 14 Rockies 4
This game served as a humbling reminder of the inherent challenges for a second year expansion club. The Pirates' offense proved formidable, overwhelming the Rockies pitching staff. While individual efforts were present, the collective struggles to contain a potent lineup exposed areas requiring significant improvement in pitching depth and strategic adjustments. Such lopsided defeats are often necessary, albeit painful, component of a new franchise's developmental process.

Game 3: Rockies 8 Pirates 2
The Rockies' capacity for immediate course correction after a demoralizing loss was notable. In the series finale, the team delivered a dominant performance to secure the series victory. Ozzie Guillen again proved instrumental, driving in three runs, while Melido Perez delivered a solid six-inning outing for the win. This rebound demonstrated a developing mental fortitude, a crucial trait for sustained competitiveness.

The Mets Series (2-1)
Game 1: Rockies 4 Mets 3 (10 Innings)

Another extra-inning contest underscored the Rockies' flair for the dramatic. After a strong start from Darryl Kile, the game extended into the tenth inning. It was B.J. Surhoff who emerged as the hero delivering a walk-off single that sealed the hard-fought victory.

Game 2: Rockies 4 Mets 2
The Rockies continued their strong play, securing a second straight win against the Mets. B.J. Surhoff delivered an exceptional offensive performance, collecting three hits, including a triple and two doubles, and driving in three runs. Butch Henry earned the win with a solid outing.

Game 3: Mets 14 Rockies 6 (10 Innings)
The homestand concluded with another extra-inning affair, this time with a a less favorable outcome for the Rockies. Despite battling into the tenth inning, the Mets ultimately pulled away with a decisive offensive burst.

The Braves defeated the Rockies 9-6. Despite home runs from Geronimo Berroa and Pat Listach, Colorado couldn't overcome Atlanta's offense, including a 2-run single by Terry Pendleton.

Game 4 Braves 2 Rockies 1
In a good old fashioned pitchers-dual, the Braves won 2-1. Tino Martinez's 2-run home run in the first inning proved to be the difference, as Mike Bielecki pitched well for Atlanta.

Los Angeles Dodgers Series (1-2)
Game 1: Dodgers 13 Rockies 2

Rockies Come Home As June Winds Down

Hello Rockies fans! Your favorite analyst, Izzy Garcia here to break down the rollercoaster of a homestand we just wrapped up against the Astros, Giants, and Padres. This second season for the Rockies continues to be a wild ride!

Houston Astros Series (1-2)
Game 1: Astros 3 Rockies 2

We dropped the opener in a tight one. It was a tough bullpen outing in the 8th that ultimately cost us the game, with Luis Gonzalez hitting a 2-run home run for Houston. Melido Perez pitched a solid five innings, striking out seven and giving up only one earned run.

Game 2 Rockies 5 Astros 4 (11 Innings)
What a game! We rallied in the 7th to tie it up and then Geronimo Berroa delivered a clutch walk-off solo home run in the 11th to give us the win. Jerry Browne was a standout with three hits and three RBI. This was a much needed morale boost and showed our grit.

Game 3: Astros 6 Rockies 5
Unfortunately, we couldn't clinch the series, losing a close one 6-5. Luis Gonzalez was a thorn in our side again, with a go-ahead single in the 8th. We put up a good fight, but a few key errors proved costly.

San Francisco Giants Series (2-1)
Game 1: Rockies 4 Giants 2

Gil Heredia was absolutely amazing on the mound, going eight strong inning and giving up only one run. Lance Johnson came through with a big 2-run single to break a scoreless tie in the fourth, and Heredia even helped his own cause with a solo home run!

Game 2: Rockies 8 Giants 3
Another strong win, 8-3! Jerry Browne had a fantastic day at the plate going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Melido Perez picked up his fifth win of the season with a solid outing. We showed a lot of offensive power in this one.

Game 3: Giants 4 Rockies 3 (11 Innings)
A tough extra-inning loss to close out the series. Mike Benjamin hit a solo home run in the 11th to give the Giants the win. We battled back in the 8th to tie it, but couldn't hold on.

San Diego Padres Series (3-1)
Game 1: Rockies 19 Padres 5

What an offensive explosion! We absolutely crushed the Padres in a 19-5 blowout. Geronimo Berroa led the charge with four runs scored and four RBI, tying the Rockies' single game runs record! Pat Listach's 2-run double in the 4th was a key hit in our massive 8-run inning. Darryl Kile got the win.

Game 2 (DH GM 1) Rockies 3 Padres 2
In the first game of a double-header, the Rockies pulled out a 3-2 extra-inning victory against the Padres! Butch Henry was the player of the game pitching 6.2 innings and allowing just one earned run. We won it in the 10th after the Padres tied it in the ninth, showing some serious late-game resilience!

Game 3 (DH GM 2) Padres 5 Rockies 2
The Padres bounced back in a second game of the doubleheader with a 5-2 win. Their pitcher, Andy Benes, had a great outing, holding our offense to only two runs. While we had some opportunities with runners on base, we couldn't get the timely hits.

Game 4 Rockies 5 Padres 3
We closed out the homestand with a 5-3 victory over the Padres. Melido Perez was excellent, and Geronimo Berroa delivered another crucial hit, a 2-run double in the 7th to give us the lead and secure the series win.

Homestand Wrap-Up
Overall, it was a pretty good homestand for the Rockies! We went 6-5 across the three series, showcasing our offensive potential and some solid pitching performances. This stretch was a good step in the right direction, showing resilience and a developing ability to win at home.

Mid-Season Review: A Conversation Between Sterling and Thorne

Arthur Sterling IIICaleb, come in. Sit down. So, the first half is in the books. Our record sits at 41-42, and frankly, I'm very pleased with where we are. For a second year team, it's a testament to the work you and Dusty have done."

Caleb Thorne: "Thank you, Mr. Sterling. It's been a collective effort. We've certainly had our share of challenges, but the players have shown tremendous resilience. We're still identifying strengths and areas for growth, but the competitive spirit has been consistent."

Arthur Sterling III: "One of my primary goals was to build our farm system, and I must say, you've done a fantastic job stocking the cupboards of our prospect pool. With the group like we have here, I have no doubts about this team's future.

Caleb Thorne: "We've committed significant resources to scouting and player development, particularly in identifying talent that can thrive in our system and at altitude. It's a long-term play, but we're excited about the progress."

Arthur Sterling III: "And I'm especially excited to finally see a real quality prospect like Alex Rodriguez in our organization. I've felt that we've lacked a future potential superstar, but I think we may have finally found our guy in Rodriguez. That's a very encouraging sign for what's to come."

Caleb Thorne: "Alex is a phenomenal talent, and we're thrilled to have him. He represents the kind of high-ceiling player we aim to acquire and develop. We believe he has the potential to be a cornerstone for this franchise for years to come. Our goal with him is to bring him along slowly and develop him so that when we do bring him up, it will be all systems go. Maybe next year he'll make it to The Show."

Arthur Sterling III: "I've also noticed something else, Caleb. Our record in extra-inning games is 8-4. This is a marked improvement from a season ago. That shows a lot of grit and focus when the pressure is highest. Keep it up!"

Caleb Thorne: "Our players have shown a remarkable ability to perform in high-leverage situations. It speaks to their mental toughness and the coaching staff's preparation. We emphasize playing fundamentally sound baseball when games are on the line, and it's paying dividends."

Arthur Sterling III: "Overall, Caleb, I've been very happy with your progress towards the goals I've set out for you, and your handling of the team's on-field and front office management. Keep up the great work!"

Headed For The All-Star Break

Your Colorado Rockies have just wrapped up a rollercoaster stretch of games leading into the All-Star break, a period that saw moments of brilliance quickly giving way to a challenging slump. After a promising run, the team stumbled in early July, finishing the first half on a tough note.

End of June: Dominating the St. Louis Cardinals (3-1)
Game 1: Rockies 9 Cardinals 8

In a high-scoring opener, the Rockies pulled out a hard-fought 9-8 victory, marking their sixth win in eight games and fourth in their last five. Armando Reynoso picked up his fifth win of the season, backed by a strong offensive showing. Shawon Dunston went 3-for-5 at the plat, while Jacob Brumfield added two hits, and Lloyd McClendon drove in three runs.

Game 2: Cardinals 11 Rockies 5
The Cardinals bounced back with a decisive 11-5 win. Despite another hot bat from Jacob Brumfield, who tallied three hits and scored a pair of runs, Darryl Kile had a rough outing and took the loss.

Game 3: Rockies 4 Cardinals 3
The Rockies reclaimed the momentum with a tight 4-3 victory. Gil Heredia pitched well, earning his sixth win of the season. B.J. Surhoff contributed with a pair of hits and an RBI, helping secure the crucial win.

Game 4: Rockies 4 Cardinals 3:
Colorado clinched the series finale 4-3. Butch Henry delivered a strong performance, going over seven innings to earn his third win of the season. Geronimo Berroa blasted his team-leading 19th home run of the season, a key hit in the win.

Early July: Chicago Cubs Series (1-2)
Game 1: Rockies 6 Cubs 4

The Rockies kept their winning ways alive with a 6-4 triumph over the Cubs. They staged a late comeback, scoring three runs in the final two innings to erase a 4-3 deficit. B.J. Surhoff was a standout, hitting his fifth home run and driving in three runs. David Weathers picked up his first win in a Rockies uniform. This win pushed the Rockies back above .500 at 43-42.

Game 2: Cubs 8 Rockies 7
Unfortunately, the momentum quickly reversed. The Cubs fought back handing the Rockies a heartbreaking 8-7 walk-off loss. Colorado had tied the game at seven in the top of the ninth only to see Chicago seal th3 victory in the bottom half.

Game 3: Cubs 5 Rockies 4
The losing continued with another painful 5-4 walk-off defeat. This marked back-to-back walk off loses for the Rockies, completely halting their earlier positive momentum.

Pre-All-Star Break: Florida Marlins Series (0-4)
Hoping to right the ship before the All-Star break, the Rockies headed to Miami for a four game series against their expansion brethren, but things went from bad to worse.

Game 1: Marlins 10 Rockies 3
The Marlins hammered the Rockies in a 10-4 rout, signaling the start of a difficult series.

Game 2: Marlins 10 Rockies 3
Another lopsided loss, as the Marlins once again put up 10 runs while the Rockies offense managed only three, extending their losing streak.

Game 3: Marlins 8 Rockies 7 (10 Innings)
In a crushing blow, the Rockies lost a heartbreaker in 10 innings, 8-7, on their third walk-off loss in their last five games.

Game 4: Marlins 6 Rockies 2
The Rockies concluded the first half of the season with a 6-2 loss, dropping all four games to the Marlins. This extended their losing streak to six games, sending them into the All-Star break on an awful note.

Reactions from the Clubhouse and Airwaves
Dusty Rhodes (Rockies Manager):

"You know, this game can humble you real quick. We had some great moment there, some real gritty wins. We showed we can battle, we can come back, we can win on the road. But then you hit a wall. We're not making the plays, we're giving up too many big innings, and we're just not finishing games right now. The break is coming at a good time. We need to reset, refocus, and remember who we are. We're better than what we showed these last few games, and we've got to prove it in the second half."

"Mile High Mike" O'Connell (Denver Sports Radio):
"UGH! Just when you think you've got this team figured out, they pull the rug out from under you! We were cruising, back over .500, playing solid baseball, and then BAM! Six straight losses, swept by the Marlins, three walk-offs in five games! It's like a bad dream! I saw the fight in St. Louis and Chicago, I saw Surhoff hitting well, Dunston getting clutch hits, Reynoso and Henry dealing. But then...it just disappeared. We're 43-48 at the break, which is better than anyone expected for a second-year franchise, but ended the first half on a six-game losing streak? That stings. This team needs to take a long look in the mirror during this break and figure out how to finish games. We need some answers in the second half, folks. Some serious answers!"

"Mile High Mike" Post All-Star Break Blues at Home

"Mile High Mike" O'Connell: "Alright, alright, Denver, welcome back to the Mile High Sports Report. And let me tell ya, the All-Star break feels like a lifetime ago doesn't it? We were talking about Berrroa and Listach heading to the Midsummer Classic, dreaming about a strong second half. Well, the dream's hit a little turbulence here at Mile High, folks. A little too much turbulence if you ask me.

We just wrapped up a ten-game homestand, and if you're keeping score at home, it wasn't pretty. We dropped three out of four to the Cardinals, then lost two of three to the Cubs, and to top it off, we couldn't even manage to win the series against our expansion buddies, the Marlins, losing two out of three to them too. That's a 3-7 record out of the break in our own back yard! UGH!

I'm trying to figure it out, folks. We was flashes of what this team can do before the break, that grit, that fight. But coming home, it's like we left our bats on vacation.

Against the Cardinals we saw some decent moments from guys like Pat Listach, and Jerry Browne, even B.J. Surhoff with some timely hitting. But it wasn't enough. We saw Melido Perez have a rough outing, and the bullpen, well, they've been taxed. You get two runs in one game, four in another. You can't win like that! And when guys like Chuck Carr and Gerald Perry are carving us up, you know something's not right.

Then the Cubs come to town. We got that one win thanks to a good outing from Perez, where he said he 'tried to mix it up,' and Torey Lovullo with a clutch triple. But Sammy Sosa was hitting dingers all over the place, and we just couldn't contain their offense in those loses. Jacob Brumfield hit a homer, but it feels like we're just playing catch-up every night.

It's frustrating! We're not getting consistently good pitching, and when we do, the bats go quiet. Or the defense falters. Its' always something. This August, man, it's already got that 'swoon' feeling hanging over it like last season, and we're not even their yet! Dusty Rhodes said, 'It's go to translate into win.' He's right! The energy has to translate!

What now? Look I get it. This is a team in their second year of existence. There are growing pain. But they've shown they can win games. These games are at home. This is where you're supposed to feed off the Mile High crowd! We need to find some consistency, and fast. The schedule doesn't get any easier, and we can't afford to let this early second-half slump define us.

I'm still a believer, but I'm telling you, the faithful up here are getting a little restless. We need to turn this around, starting now."
