One game separates the top three teams in the division.

If we beat the Dodgers today, we are tied with them. If the Reds also lose, there will be a three way tie for 1st.

First things first, though. We need to beat the Dodgers.

They are pitching Mike Witt (15-13, 3.36).

The Giants have Scott Garrelts (13-13, 2.73).

I have done well against Witt, going 8 for 25, or .320.

We got behind early as the second batter of the game - our former teammate, Chili Davis - belted a two run homer.
I caught a floater from Brian Deak for the 3rd out.

Dodgers lead 2-0

I led off for the home side by dropping one into short right centre for a single.
With one out I grabbed stolen base #113.
I scored on a Ryan Klesko single.

Dodgers lead 2-1

I took care of a Dave Anderson grounder for the 3rd out in the 2nd.

I led off again in the 3rd and this time I drew a walk.
Stolen base #114... and then #115!
I scored on a Robby Thompson single to tie the game!

Game tied 2-2

I came up in the 4th with two out, Luis Medina on 3rd, and Phil Oullette on 2nd. I grounded out to Kent Hrbek at 1st.

I caught a Phil Plantier pop for the 1st out in the 6th.

I handled a Bill Spiers grounder for the 1st out in the 7th.

I led off the bottom of the 7th by reaching on an infield hit.
Stolen base #116.
I scored on a single by Robby again!

Giants lead 3-2!

I took care of a Steve Sax grounder for the 1st out in the 8th.

With two out and a man on in the 8th, Jim went to Bobby Thigpen.
He got the 3rd out.

I came up in the 8th with two out, Phil on 3rd, and Ken Dayley pitching.
I grounded out to Anderson at short.

Mark Williamson took over for us in the 9th.
I handled a Tim Wallach grounder for the 1st out behind him.
Two batters later, we had the win! We swept the Dodgers in a three game set!

I went 2 for 4, with two singles, a walk, all three of our runs scored, and four stolen bases!

And the Padres beat the Reds, 5-0!

THERE IS A THREE WAY TIE FOR FIRST IN THE NL WEST!

We have nine games left! Based on the strength of the remaining competition, the experts are giving us the advantage - 43.8% chance of winning compared to 31.4% for the Reds and 24.9% for the Dodgers.

Tomorrow we face the Astros.

The Reds face the Braves.

The Dodgers face the Padres.

Let's go.

Every game is huge.

The Astros are in town.

They are pitching Randy Tomlin (8-9, 2.88).

The Giants have Frank Viola (21-7, 1.69).

I have had little exposure to Tomlin, going 1 for 5.

I led off for the home side by hitting one into right for a single.
I never got any further.

In the 2nd I started a Priske - Thompson - Deer double play to get Harold Baines and Dave Gallagher.

In the bottom half, Rob Deer scored on a Ryan Klesko groundout.

Giants lead 1-0

I came up in the 3rd with one out and Tim Naehring on 2nd. I flew out to Baines in right but Tim moved up on the play.
He then scored on a Lonnie Smith triple.

Giants lead 2-0

I handled a Glenn Davis grounder for the 3rd out in the 4th.

I then did the same to Gallagher for the 1st out in the 5th.

In the bottom of the 5th I again came up with one out and Tim on 2nd. I grounded out to Casey Candaele at 2nd, again moving Tim up.
This time he was left there.

I took care of a Dickie Thon grounder for the 2nd out in the 6th.
I caught a Craig Biggio liner for the 3rd out.

In the 7th I came up, once AGAIN with one out and Tim on 2nd, but this time I also had Alan Cockrell on 3rd. I hit one up the middle for a two run single!
I was doubled off.

Giants lead 4-0

And that is how it ended as Frank went the distance for the shutout!

I went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and two RBI!

But what did the out-of-town scoreboard tell us?

The Reds beat the Braves, 10-3, but the Dodgers lost, 4-3 to the Padres!

Here we go. Eight games left. The Giants are tied with the Reds and the Dodgers trail by one.

Today the Astros are pitching Manny Hernandez (7-13, 3.99).

The Giants have Scott Sanderson (11-10, 2.98).

I have gone only 7 for 37, or .189, against Hernandez... but I have been hot lately, so let's go!

I led off for the home side by reaching with an infield hit on the first pitch!
Lonnie Smith then hit into a double play.

In the 2nd we turned a Thompson - Priske - Deer double play to get Tony Barron and Casey Candaele.

I caught a Craig Worthington pop for the 3rd out in the 3rd.

I came up with one out in the 3rd and got hit by a Hernandez fastball. I'll take it.
Stolen base #117.
I got no further.

Things turned for the worse in the 4th when Craig Biggio belted a three run homer.

Astros lead 3-0

We got one back that inning when Rob Deer homered.

Astros lead 3-1

I came up with two out in the 5th and flew out to Harold Baines in right.

I handled a Glenn Davis grounder for the 1st out in the 6th.

Mark Davis took over on the mound for us in the 8th.
I got the 3rd out for him off a Biggio grounder.

I came up with one out in the 8th and took a walk.
I moved to 2nd on a single by Lonnie.
I scored on a single by Robby Thompson.
Ryan Klesko singled, to load the bases.
Rob Deer walked, forcing Lonnie across.
Robby scored on a Ruben Sierra sac fly.

Giants lead 5-3!

Bobby Thigpen took the mound for us in the 9th.
He allowed one base runner but that was it and we had the win, our fifth in a row!

I went 1 for 2 with a single, a walk, a hit-by-pitch, a run scored, and a stolen base.

The Reds beat the Braves, 4-3 and the Padres beat the Dodgers, 6-2.

So we are still tied with the Reds but the Dodgers are now two games back (and have lost seven in a row).

Down to seven games but we are in a dead heat with the Reds and can't count out the Dodgers.

Today we finish with the Padres before heading down to L.A.

It is our last game at home if we can't get to the postseason.

Let's give them a show.

The Padres are pitching Chris Hammond (8-12, 3.32).

The Giants have Bruce Ruffin (15-5, 2.59).

I have gone 5 for 15 against Hammond, and I am running pretty hot.

They went three up, three down and then I led off for our side. I put not he after burners and reached on an infield hit.
Stolen base #118.
Lonnie Smith walked.
We were both left.

The Astros got on the board in the 2nd when Harold Baines scored on a Dave Gallagher triple. Then Gallagher scored on a Jim Edmonds groundout.
I took care fo a Casey Candaele grounder for the third out.

Astros lead 2-0

I made an amazing play on a Baines grounder to get the 3rd out in the 3rd, saving a run.

I came up with one out in the 3rd and grounded out to Glenn Davis at 1st.

I then came up with one out in the 5th and grounded out to Candaele at 2nd.

With one out and one on in the 6th, Jim went to John Burkett.
We turned a Priske - Thompson - Deer double play to get Gallagher and Edmonds.

I handled a Hammond grounder for the 3rd out in the 7th.

I came up in the 7th with two out, Ryan Klesko on 2nd, and Tim Naehring on 1st. I hit it hard but right at Davis who caught the liner.

Bobby Thigpen took the mound for us in the 8th.

In the bottom of the 8th we got things going with a walk for Lonnie and two run homer by Alan Cockrell!

Game tied 2-2

Mark Davis took the bump in the 9th.

They got the lead right back when Craig Biggio tripled and scored on a passed ball by Alan.
I took care of a Mark Bailey grounder for the 2nd out in the 9th.

Astros lead 3-2

I came up in the bottom of the 9th with one out and Lee Guetterman pitching.
The first pitch was a curve, low. 1-0
Slider, which I got a piece of - fouling it off. 1-1
Fastball, which I hit hard down the left field line, but foul. 1-2
Fastball, hit on the ground to Candaele. Groundout, 4-3.

We dropped the game, 3-2.

I went 1 for 5 with a single and a stolen base.

The Reds beat the Braves, 12-6
The Dodgers lost 2-0 to the Padres.

REDS 92-64, .590, --
GIANTS 91-65, .583, 1.0
DODGERS 89-67, .571, 3.0

Now we face the Dodgers and the Reds face the Padres, who just swept the Dodgers. Technically we get the tougher team, but San Diego is hot and L.A. is ice cold.

Big news over night... Mark Davis has signed a two-year extension!

He has been really great for us and it is good that he is staying around.

Every game is absolutely crucial.

We are in L.A. to take on the Dodgers while the Reds are just down the highway facing the Padres.

The Dodgers are pitching Matt Young (12-3, 1.81).

The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe (9-11, 3.63).

I have yet to get a hit against Young, going 0 for 6.

I kicked off the game and that didn't change... BUT I took a walk!
I reached 2nd on an infield single by Lonnie Smith.
We both moved up on a passed ball by Brian Deak.
I scored on an Alan Cockrell sac fly.
Then Lonnie scored on a Rob Deer single.

Giants lead 2-0

The lead did not last as Phil Plantier hit a two run homer in the bottom half.

Game tied 2-2

I came up in the 2nd with two out and Tim Naehring on 2nd.
I struck out.

I got the 1st out in the bottom of the 2nd off a Candy Maldonado grounder.
I then took care of a Dave Anderson grounder for the 3rd out.

In the 3rd I started a Priske - Thompson - Deer double play to get Young and Steve Sax.

I came up with one out in the 5th and grounded out to Kent Hrbek at 1st.

We got the lead back in the 6th when Rob and Ruben Sierra scored on a single by Tim.

Giants lead 4-2

In the bottom of the 6th, Hrbek scored on a Tim Wallach double.
Then Wallach scored on a Paul Sorrento single, tying the game back up.
I handled a Deak grounder for the 3rd out.

Game tied 4-4

I led off the 7th and flew out to Plantier in centre.

In the bottom half we turned another Priske - Thompson - Deer double play to get Anderson and Sax.

We got the lead back in the 8th when Rob scored on a sac fly by Robby Thompson.

Giants lead 5-4

I came up in the 9th with one out, pinch hitter Keith Hernandez on 1st, and Tom Henke pitching. I reached on an infield single.
Lonnie walked, loading the bases.
Alan singled and Keith and I both scored.

Giants lead 7-4

Mark Williamson took the mound for us in the bottom of the 9th.
Three batters later, we had the win. The Dodgers have lost nine in a row.

I went 1 for 4 with a single, a walk, and two runs scored.

It took 11 innings, but the Reds beat the Padres, 4-3.

We still trail by one. Five games remain and they have a Magic Number of five.

Every game is a must win game, at least until the Reds start losing.

Today the Dodgers are pitching Mike Witt (15-14, 3.38).

The Giants have Scott Garrelts (14-13, 2.72).

I have done well against Witt, going 10 for 28, or .357.

I kicked off the game by staying at .357... I was hit by a pitch!
Stolen base #119.
I went to 3rd on a sac bunt by Lonnie Smith.
I scored on a Ryan Klesko groundout.

Giants lead 1-0

I took care of a Chili Davis grounder for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 1st.

I came up with one out in the 3rd and reached on an infield hit down the 3rd base line.
Stolen base #120 AND #121!
I was still unable to score.

In the 4th Ruben Sierra socked a solo shot.

Giants lead 2-0

I took care of a Benito Santiago grounder for the final out in the 4th.

I came up with two out in the 5th and got my second straight infield hit.
Stolen base #122.
I was left on again.

In the 5th Witt scored on a Bill Spiers single.
Then Dave Anderson and Spiers scored on a Kent Hrbek double.

Dodgers lead 3-2

Their lead was short lived.
In the 6th Ryan Klesko scored on a single by Ruben.
Then Rob Deer scored on an Alan Cockrell single.
Alan later crossed on a balk.

Giants lead 5-3

I led off the 7th, now facing Ken Dayley. I grounded out to Tim Wallach at 3rd.

I made a very good play on an Anderson grounder for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 7th.
Bobby Thigpen came in with two out and an a man on. He got the 3rd out.

Mark Davis took over in the 8th, with Tom O'Malley also taking over 1st from Rob in a double switch.

I came up with two out in the 9th, now facing Bryan Harvey. I struck out.

Mark retired all three batters in the bottom of the 9th and we had the win.

I went 2 for 4 with a pair of singles, a hit-by-pitch, a run scored, and FOUR stolen bases.

More importantly, the Padres beat the Reds, 5-2!

The Giants and Reds are tied!

It is the last game of the penultimate series of our regular season. Every game is crucial.

The Dodgers are pitching Jim Deshaies (13-10, 2.83).

The Giants have Frank Viola (22-7, 1.63).

I have little experience with Deshaies, going 2 for 6.

I started the game by grounding out to Steve Sax at 2nd.

I took care of a Domingo Michel grounder for the final out in the 2nd.

I came up in the 3rd with one out and Greg Litton on 1st. I hit one off the centre field wall for an RBI triple!
I then scored on a Lonnie Smith single.

Giants lead 2-0

In the 4th, Ruben Sierra scored on an error.
I came up with two out and Robby Thompson was on 2nd and Frank on 1st. I flew out to centre.

Giants lead 3-0

That lead vanished in the bottom of the 4th when Brian Deak hit a three-run homer.
We turned a Thompson - Priske - Deer double play, but Bill Spiers scored on the play.
I then handled a Deshaies grounder for the 3rd out.

Dodgers lead 4-3

Lonnie led off the 5th with a home run to even it back up.

Game tied 4-4

I took care of a Sax grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 5th.

I led off the 7th by working a walk.
Stolen base #123.
I moved to 3rd on a one out single by Alan Cockrell and scored on a Rob Deer fielder's choice.

Giants lead 5-4

I caught a Sax pop for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 7th.
I then took care of a Chili Davis grounder for the 3rd out.

I came up in the 8th with two out, Ryan Klesko on 2nd, and Ken Dayley pitching. I walked for the 2nd straight time.
We were left on.

Mark Davis took over for us in the bottom of the 8th.
I snagged a liner by pinch hitter Mariano Duncan for the 1st out.
I made a great grab on a Deak grounder, but my throw was off-target.

Then, in the 9th, I handled a Sax grounder for the final out, giving us the win! (And sent the Dodgers to their 11th straight loss, and officially eliminated them.)

I went 1 for 3 with a triple, 2 walks, 2 runs scored, one RBI, and one stolen base.

The Reds beat the Padres, 6-5, so we are still tied.

Tomorrow is an off-day and then we are in San Diego for our final three games. The Reds are at home against the Astros.

Here we go.

We are starting out final regular season series, and the postseason is on the line.

The Padres are pitching Mark Langston (13-15, 2.87).

The Giants have Bruce Ruffin (15-5, 2.61).

I have gone only 10 for 52, or .189, against Langston.

I was at the plate when the ump said 'play ball'. I grounded one to Randy Ready at 3rd, but he threw it away and I reached 2nd on his error.
Lonnie Smith then walked.
Alan Cockrell hit into a double play and I went to 3rd.
I was left there.

The Padres got not he board in the 1st when Ozzie Guillen scored on a John Kruk single.

Padres lead 1-0

We got it back in the 2nd when Ruben Sierra scored when Ryan Klesko walked with the bases loaded.

Game tied 1-1

I took care of an Armando Verdugo grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 2nd.
But then Ready scored on a Guillen single.

Padres lead 2-1

I led off the 3rd by lining out to Gary Pettis in centre.

We even it back up in the 4th when Robby Thompson scored on a single by Ryan.

Game tied 2-2

I came up in the 5th with one out and Bruce on 1st. I grounded to Ready for a fielder's choice.
I was left at 1st.

Mark Williamson took over for us with one out in the 6th.

I came up in the 7th with two out, Tim Naehring on 3rd, and pinch hitter Mike Aldrete on 2nd.
Big at bat
Curve missing way inside. 1-0
Fastball misses. 2-0
Fastball low. 3-0
Fastball inside... but I swung and missed. 3-1
Fastball, I hit it high down the right field line, but foul. 3-2
Fastball, I hit it through the right side, scoring both runners, and taking 2nd base on a Tony Gwynn error.

Stolen base #124.
I was left at 3rd.

Giants lead 4-2

Bobby Thigpen took over for us in the 7th.
He got through his inning and then Mark Davis took over in the 8th.
I took care of a Gwynn grounder for the 2nd out in the 8th.

Then it was Jeff Robinson for the 9th.
He walked one batter but got his three outs, giving us the win!

I went 1 for 4 with a single, two RBI, and a stolen base.

The Reds beat the Astros 6-3. We are still tied.

(Meanwhile, the Royals clinched the AL West).

Another big, big game.

Today the Padres are pitching Bryn Smith (8-16, 3.15).

The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe (10-11, 3.66).

I have gone 9 for 28, or .237, against Smith.

Let's go!
I started by popping out to Randy Ready at 3rd.

We struck first, in the 2nd, when Robby Thompson scored on an Alan Cockrell single.

Giants lead 1-0

I came up with one out in the 3rd and flew out to Gary Pettis in centre.

Ryan Klesko led off the 4th with a home run.

Giants lead 2-0

In the bottom of the 4th we turned a Priske - Thompson - Deer double play to get Tony Gwynn and John Kruk.

I came up in the 5th with one out, Alan on 3rd, and Tim Naehring on 2nd. I flew out to Pettis again, but this time it was a sac fly as both Alan and Tim advanced.

Giants lead 3-0

The Padres got on the board in the 5th when Junior Felix scored on a Torey Lovullo double.
I took care of a Smith grounder for the 3rd out.

Giants lead 3-1

I caught an Ozzie Guillen pop for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 6th.

I came up in the 7th with two out and Rick on 2nd. I grounded out to Ready at 3rd.

Rob Deer homered in the 8th.

Giants lead 4-1

Mark Davis took over for us in the 8th.
I took care of a Pettis grounder for the 3rd out.

I came up in the 9th with one out, Tim on 3rd, pinch hitter Mike Aldrete on 1st, and Blaise Ilsley pitching. I walked, loading the bases.
Lonnie Smith grounded to short, and the got the runner at home.
Ryan flew out and we left them loaded.

Bobby Thigpen took the mound for us in the 9th.
He gave up a leadoff single but gout out of it without giving up a run.

We won again!

I went 0 for 3 with a sac fly, a walk, and an RBI.

The Reds beat the Astros, 5-0.

We are going into the last day in a dead heat.

The last day of the regular season... unless we need a tiebreaker.

The only thing we can control is ourselves, so we need to beat the Padres.

The Padres are pitching Storm Davis (13-9, 2.25).

The Giants have Scott Garrelts (15-13, 2.76).

I have done well against Davis, going 8 for 17, or .471.

And I started things out by grounding out to Ozzie Guillen at short.

I returned the favour for the 2nd out in the bottom half.
But then Tony Gwynn scored on a John Kruk single.

Padres lead 1-0

In the 2nd we got back-to-back dingers from Ruben Sierra and Robby Thompson to take the lead.

Giants lead 2-1

I caught a Torey Lovullo pop for the 1st out in the bottom of the 2nd.
But then Randy Ready scored on an Armando Verdugo double.

Game tied 2-2

I came up with one out in the 3rd and grounded out back to Davis.

We got the lead back in the 4th when Ryan Klesko scored on a fielder's choice by Robby.

Giants lead 3-2

I led off the 5th with an infield single.
Stolen base #125.
I scored on a single by Lonnie Smith.
Lonnie ended up scoring on a double by Ruben.

Giants lead 5-2

The Pads struck back in the 5th when Guillen scored on a Tony Gwynn double.

Giants lead 5-3

I came up in the 6th with two out, Tim Naehring on 2nd, and Woody Williams pitching. I flew out to Pettis in centre.

Jim went to Mark Williamson in the 6th with two out and two on.
He got out of it.

I caught a pop from Verdugo to end the 8th.

I came up with one out in the 9th and flew out to Junior Felix in left.

Bobby Thigpen came in to pitch the 9th.
He gave up a triple, but no runs and we had another win!

I went 1 for 5 with a single, a run scored, and a stolen base.

The Reds blanked the Astros, 8-0.

WE ARE STILL TIED TO END THE REGULAR SEASON!

We get tomorrow off but then we are home to face the Reds in a one game playoff for the NL West!
