2026 Cardinals -- Resetting the reset

The St. Louis Cardinals have demoted starting pitcher Quinn Matthews to AAA Memphis and called up Tanner Houck from the Redbirds.
The 26-year-old Matthews, who had gone 23-18 with a 3.88 ERA over the previous two seasons for the Cardinals, has gotten off to a horrendous start to the 2027 season going 1-3 in six starts with a 12.38 ERA.
Getting called up from Memphis is Houck, a native of nearby Collinsville, Ill., who was signed in the off-season from the Mets but suffered a hamstring injury during spring training.
In 2026, Houck, now 30, went 15-6 in 32 starts with the Mets while boasting a 3.40 ERA.
Houck was originally drafted by Boston in 2017 and broke into the majors with the Red Sox in 2020.
He pitched in 136 games/103 starts for Boston going 34-35 with nine saves and a 3.55 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed catcher Jimmy Crooks on the 10-day injured list after he suffered a separated shoulder during a 7-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on April 21.
The 25-year-old is expected to miss up to three weeks.
Crooks, who earned the starting catcher's job as a rookie in 2026 when he hit .310 with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 64 games/57 starts, had hit .224 with two home runs and 11 RBIs through his first 24 games/22 starts of this season.
Bernal, 23, has hit .276 with one home run and nine RBIs in 15 games at Memphis this season.

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jason Savacool and New York Mets first baseman Alec Burleson have been suspended after Burleson charged the mound after being hit by a pitch in the third inning of New York's 5-0 win over St. Louis on April 27.
Savacool had given up a home run to the previous batter, Francisco Alvarez, before hitting his former teammate.
It was the second home run of the game allowed by Savaacool.
Savacool will be forced to his for six games.
Burleson is suspended for four.

Relief Pitcher of the Month: John King -- The 32-year-old left-hander got into 15 games going 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA. He pitched 12.1 innings, during which he struck out 11 and had a 1.30 WHIP.
