Tunney Hunsaker Opponents
Starting an off shoot of my Manfred Ackers projects, I'm going to work through the careers of the 15 opponents discussed in the book Facing Ali rating the fighters that we've not yet seen introduced by anyone. I decided to do this in this thread being most of the fighters looked at are going to be in the LHW/HW class. We'll see.
First we'll be looking at Tunney Hunsaker's career. I got starting thinking about this project when I got to rereading Facing Ali. First up... Joe Moran - USA Rating 1 Light Heavyweight 1951-58 14 wins / 9 losses / 0 draws / 11 KO Hometown: San Antonio, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Tunney Hunsaker's first professional opponent in the ring. Moran, a pretty good puncher KO'd Hunsaker in the first round of thier bout in October 1951. That was part of 11 consecutive victories, 10 by KO for Moran after he lost his first bout by KO in the 1st round. There was only one other opponent of any note in Moran's career and that was LHW Alvin Williams, whom Moran lost a 12 round decision to in November 1953. Moran's career was a real mix of opponents ranging from middleweight up to heavyweight. His last career opponent was a lightwight! That being Dan Toriani who was trained by Angelo Dundee who fought a breif, 2 year career that ended with a 12-0-2,11KO record. Toriani KO'd Moran in the 2nd round in October 1958 ending Moran's career. |

After Moran, Hunsaker didn't fight again for 9 months until July 1952 when he fought and defeated Victor Viola in three straight decision bouts in July and October 1952.
Victor Viola USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1950-53 6 wins / 15 losses / 1 draw / 6 KO Hometown: San Antonio, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto This guy made a short career of fighting just about totally nothing. Local guys who mostly fought less then a handfull of fights each you could count on one hand. He made a mini career of fighting Tunney Hunsaker who fought Viola in 3 consectutive fights at the beginning of Hunsaker's caeer. Tunney beat him in 3 decisions. |

Next up for Hunsaker was Louis (Whitey) Berlier. They fought in November 1952 with Berlier defeating Tunney in a 10 round decision.
Louis (Whitey) Berlier - USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1946-52 12 wins / 11 losses / 2 draws / 5 KO Hometown: New Orleans, LA Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Lost a 10 round decision to Joey Maxim in April 1946. Defeated Dolph Quijano in June 1948 in a 12 round decision for the Texas State HW Title. In September of that same year, Quijano KO'd Berlier in the 5th round to take the Texas title. He lost by KO fights to Tommy Gomez and Danny Nardico and Joe Moran. Defeated Tunney Hunsaker in a 10 round decision in November 1952 in what turned out to be Berlier's last fight. Some other opponents with noteable records include a KO loss to Turkey Thompson HW(45-14-2,33KO), a KO loss to HW Jerry McSwain(21-7-1,12KO), a loss and a draw with HW Bob Sikes(39-13-2,24KO) and a win and a loss agains MW Louis Rousse(23-16-0,10KO). |

Jesus (Ranchero) Alonzo USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1948-56 3 wins / 13 losses / 3 draws / 2 KO Alias: Fighting Bartender Hometown: San Antonio, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Alonzo fought his entire career in Texas and most that in his hometown San Antonio. Only opponents of note are one of his 3 wins came against Victor Viola, and losses against Tunney Hunsaker, Oscar Pharo and Buddy Turman. |

Hunsaker took on Joe Arthur right near the end of Arthur's career in March 1953 winning a 10 round decision over Arthur in San Antonio, Texas.
Joe Arthur USA Rating 1 Middleweight 1949-53 20 wins / 19 losses / 3 draws / 8 KO Hometown: Indianapolis, IN Manager: Al Farb/Tom Leeper Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto BoxRec lists Arthur as a Light Heavyweight, but the majority of his career was fought as a middleweight. His Middleweight career started out 14-2-1. He finished that phase with wins against Eddie Miller(35-24-3,17KO) and Tony Masciarelli(49-46-5,21KO), the best looking opponents of the bunch. Then in May and June 1950 he first lost an 8 round decision to and then won a 10 round decision against Billy Brown(57-37-7,13KO). Including those fights from then through February 1952 Arthur managed only a 3-13-0,1KO record. Included in the losses were ones against Walter Cartier twice, Garth Panter twice, Jimmy Welch, Al Priest and Lee Sala. After he had KO'd Penn Lester and 0-2 fighter, in October 1951, Arthur finished with 4 consectutive KO losses to finish those 13 dropped fights. At that point, Arthur made the move to work up to the Light Heavyweight division. In March 1952, about 3-1/2 weeks after a 3rd round KO loss to Sala, ARthur took on LHW Alvin Williams loosing a 10 round decision to Williams. He followed that with a 4th round KO against Claude Brown. Interesting to note that Boxrec shows Arthur at 163 lbs in early February for that fight against Sala. Only 4 months later came the Brown fight and Arthur's listed at 185! Arthur's career as a Light Heavy was breaf compiling only a 3-4-2 record. He managed beat Williams in a later fight along with beating Joe Moran. He lost to Bobby Dykes twice and to Tunney Hunsaker in March 1953. After a 3 round draw with a John Vinegar(3-7-1) and a 6 round draw with Irwin Schultz(23-16-7,6KO), Arthur hung em up. |

About 6 weeks after the 10 round decision over Joe Arthur, Tunney knocksout this guy in the 1st round in Dallas.
Carl Griffin USA Rating 1 Heaveyweight 1949, 1953 1 win / 1 loss / 0 draw / 1 KO Hometown: Greenville, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Griffin's one of these guys you just kind of put some real bad looking ratings on him and that's it. Griffin won by TKO in the 5th in October 1949 against a Bob Walls who was fighting for his one and only time. Griffin then dissappeared until April 1953 when he climbed into the ring against Tunney Hunsaker. Tunney KO'd Grillin in the first round and that was it for Griffin's career. |

Tunney records a 2nd straight knockout, dispatching Sharkey O'Neal Crocker in the 4th round on June 2nd 1953.
Sharkey O'Neil Crocker USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1948-53 8 wins / 6 losses / 0 draws / 3 KO Hometown: Houston, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto An 8-2-0 record to start his career. The most noteable fight being a 2nd round KO loss to Danny Nardico. He won a 6 round decision against a LHW Tony Elizondo who sported a 45-11-1,30KO career record. He won a 10 round decision against Jesus Alonzo. That all followed though with 4 straight losses, two in 1951 against Louis Berlier and Joe Moran and the after not fighting for 2 years, he lost to Billy LeBlanc(1-5-1) and Tunney Hunsaker in May and June 1953. |

On June 9th 1953 after knocking out Sharkey Crocker a week earlier, Hunsaker stepped into the ring against Jim Saddler who was 1-0 into what would be a very brief, nothing career. Hunsaker defeated Saddler in a 6 round decision.
Jim Saddler USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1953-55 1 win / 5 losses / 0 draws / 1 KO Hometown: Dallas, TX Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Defeated Joe Moran by 2nd round TKO in his initial fight but then Saddler lost his next 5 before leaving the ring. Lost to Tunney Hunsaker 6 round decision, George Peyton(12-2-0,6KO) 5th round KO, Ocar Pharo 2nd round KO, Buddy Turman 2nd round KO and finally a Lencho Hernandez(2-0-0) Ko'd him in the first round in November 1955 to convince Saddler to give up boxing. |

According to BoxRec, after the decision over Jim Saddler in June 1953, Tunney did not fight again until almost exactly 5 years later in June 1958 when he fought and KO'd in the 2nd round a Herbert Hair. There are at least no recorded fights for Hunsaker in that 5 year period?? Interestingly, the chapter on Hunsaker in Facing Ali mentions nothing of this broken period in his career, if in fact there was one. It mentions in Facing Ali in fact that Hunsaker made his professional debute in 1953? BoxingRec lists it as his first fight against Viola in July 1952, though it also lists the fight with Joe Moran in October 1951.
Herbert Hair USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1954, 58-59 2 wins / 4 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO Hometown: Steubenville, OH Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Lost two fights in 1954 then did not fight again till April 1958 when he won a 6 round decision. Two months later Hair was KO'd in the 2nd round by Tunney Hunsaker. He didn't fight again for almost a year when he won a 4 round decision against Bill McMurray who was just starting out his career. Hair then fought two weeks later after the McMurray win and was KO'd in 3 to end his career. |

About 3 weeks after downing Herbert Hair in Ravenswood, West Virginia, Tunney traveled to Charleroi, PA to take on Emil Brtko, a heavyweight out of the western PA area who was nearing the end of his career that saw some success until he tried to move up in competition with the middle and upper class of the HW division. Brtko was good enough though to handle Tunney as he KO'd Hunsaker in the 2nd round.
Emil Brtko USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1953-59 24 wins / 11 losses / 0 draws / 13 KO Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Started out career 12-0-0 and 15-1-0,9KO's against the local club fighters around western Pennsylvania. Then in May 1955 he ran into Sonny Liston in the ring in Pittsburgh. Liston 9-1-0 at the time knocked Brtko out in the 5th. The rest of Brtko's career starting with that defeat to Liston marked a decided improvement in the competion he faced and thus a fall off of only a 9-10-0,4KO record during the later half of that career. Defeats were faced against Mike DeJohn twice, Buddy Turman, George Chuvalo and Ernie Terrell who was starting out his career and was 6-0-0 in Feb 1958 when he faced Brtko. After the loss to Terrell, Brtko managed to put together 3 straight wins in early/mid 1958 including a 2nd round KO of Tunney Hunsaker. Those wins were followed though by a 5th round KO by Alonzo Johnson, a 4th round KO win for Brtko of JOhnny Pratt, before Brtko called it quits after getting knocked out again in the 5th round by Terry Lewis in August 1959. |

After getting KO'd by Brtko, Hunsaker traveled to Fayetteville, WV in August 1958 for some easy pikens knocking out in the 3rd round Tiny Gibson who was getting into the ropes for his one and only time.
Tiny Gibson USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1958 0 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 0 KO Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Nothing much about this guy other then he fought once getting KO'd in the 3rd round in August 1958 by Tunney Hunsaker in Fayetteville, West Virginia which may well have been the area Gibson was from. |

In March 1959, Tunney took on another new comer, Terrell Pruitt in Louisville, Kentucky. Pruitt managed to go the 6 rounds with Tunney loosing the decision. He lasted a handfull of more fights.
Terrell Pruitt USA Rating 1 Heavyweight 1959-61 2 wins / 7 losses / 1 draw / 0 KO Hometown: Louisville, KY Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Well, he was never stopped in a fight. One little claim to make by Pruitt. His first career fight was a 6 round UD loss to Tunney Hunsaker in March 1959. |

The first of 2 meetings with Hosea Chapman ended in a 12 round no contest for Hunsaker after it initially was a points win for him, but the commission changed it to a no contest. BoxRec doesn't state a reason why for this.
Hosea Chapman USA Rating 3 Heavyweight 1951-59 18 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 10 KO Hometown: Huntington, WV Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Fighting no one of any consequence other then maybe Bob Garner who we've seen rated into the game and Tunney Hunsaker twice. Hosea made a career out of fighting guys in what would turn out to be his opponent's last career fight. He defeated Billy Kelly, Garner, Pat Richards(22-8-5,15KO), Bob O'Bannon and Bob Jackson and lost to Charley Lee(12-12-2,11KO) all who those fights turned out to be thier last. Chapman's last two career fights turned out to be both against Hunsaker. The first fight in June 1959, a points win for Hunsaker was later changed by commission to a no contest. Then 5 months later they fought a rematch, this time Chapman win's his 18th in a 12 round decision. |
