Game 2: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics

The major-league debut of Johnny Lush did not disappoint. The rookie pitcher led the Boston Americans (2-0) to a 4 to 0 victory over the Philadelphia Athletics (0-2). What a start for this promising player.

In notching the shutout win, Lush (1-0) scattered 2 hits, walked 2, and hit 2 batters, while striking out 8, in his 118 pitch effort; Game Score of 89. On the other side of the ledger, Mordecai Brown (0-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering 2 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings of play; Game Score of 65. Joe Turner was called in to cover the final inning, though ineffective as he allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits.

Game 4: Boston Americans vs. Philadelphia Athletics

Another close game that just didn't go Boston's way. Here, the Philadelphia Athletics (2-2) outlasted the Americans (2-2) by a 3 to 1 score.

Rookie pitcher Mike Lynch (1-0) twirled a gem, allowing 1 unearned on 4 hits and 5 walks, striking out 7 in his 158-pitch effort; Game Score 79. What a way to make your major league debut. Game 5: St. Louis Browns vs. Boston Americans

On a chilly home opening day, this was not the ideal way to treat the 8,901 fans in attendance, as the visiting St. Louis Browns (3-2) got the best of the Boston Americans (2-3) by a 5 to 4 score. A tough outcome that was impacted by the sloppy defense of Frank Chance and Danny Shay.

St. Louis starter Hooks Wiltse (2-0) picked up the victory, as he allowed 4 earned runs on 11 hits and 4 walks in his 160-pitch effort; Game Score 48. Noodles Hahn (1-1) was tagged with the loss after he permitted 5 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits and 2 walks in 8 innings of play; Game Score 47. Cubs Make Trade Proposal

The Chicago Cubs sent over a trade proposal in which they would send 19-year old reliever Bill Bartley in return for minor league pitcher Effie Norton and minor league 2B Leo Lozada. While I am always on the lookout for young pitching talent, I just don't think this is the right move for me to make. Trade proposal rejected.

Game 11: Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Americans

A tight game throughout, the outcome turned on defensive miscues by the Boston defense and the long-ball smash by Sherry Magee that resulted in the Chicago White Sox (4-7) topping the Boston Americans (5-6) by a 5 to 4 score.

Bill Carrick (3-0) continued his winning ways, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk on his 103 pitch effort; Game Score 61. On the other hand, Jesse Tannehill (0-3) cannot seem to catch a break as he was saddled with the loss after allowing 5 runs (1 earned) on 9 hits; Game Score 59.

At the plate, Hughie Jennings (3 for 4, Double, 2 Runs), Sherry Magee (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, 2 RBIs), and Lew Ritter (1 for 4, RBI) paced the Chicago offense. In the loss, Fred Clarke (2 for 3, 3 RBIs), Bill Lange (1 for 3, Double, Run), and Frank Chance (1 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI) played well.

Game 12: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators

This was a tough matchup, as the Boston Americans (6-6) were taking on the AL leading Washington Senators (8-4). Thanks to the solid pitching of Sam Leever and a few timely hits, the Americans prevailed over the Senators by a 3 to 1 score.

In picking up the win, Leever (2-1) allowed just 1 earned run on 6 hits and 1 walk in his 103 pitch outing; Game Score 72. For the home team, Jock Menefee (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, 2 walks, and 1 wild pitch in 8 innings of play; Game Score 67. Beany Jacobson covered the final inning with a scoreless effort.

The Boston offense leaders included Danny Shay (2 for 3, Run, Stolen Base), Chick Stahl (1 for 4, RBI), and John Farrell (1 for 3, Run). Tim Jordan (1 for 1, Double, Run), Duff Cooley (1 for 3, Triple, Walk), and Fred Carisch (1 for 3, RBI) played well in the loss.

Game 13: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators

What an absolutely crazy game that took 18 innings to declare the winner. In this instant-classic, the Boston Americans (7-6) topped the Washington Senators (8-5) by a 3 to 2 score in the longest MLB game in history.

Not sure if either pitcher is going to have an arm after this game. For the Americans, Noodles Hahn (3-1) picked up the win by allowing just 1 earned run on 12 hits, while striking out 9, in 17 innings of play on a bonkers total of 224 pitches thrown; Game Score 108. Jose Ramos (SV 1) closed out the game to earn his first save of the season, but his 1 inning of play was fraught with danger as he allowed 3 hits and 1 unearned run in the 6 batters faced. The Senators pitching was led by Rube Waddell's 223 pitch effort that allowed 1 unearned run on 6 hits and 3 walks, striking out 17, in 15 innings of play; Game Score 117. Carl Lundgren took over for 2 innings in which he allowed 1 hits and 2 walks, striking out 3, before turning the ball over to Beany Jacobsen (0-1) who was tagged with the loss after serving up 2 unearned runs on 3 hits.

With such dominant pitching performances, hitting was limited though a few players shined at the plate. For Boston, Fred Clarke (2 for 8, 2 Doubles), Solly Hoffman (1 for 6, RBI, 2 Walks), and Jesse Hoffmeister (2 for 8, Run, RBI, though with 4 Strikeouts). The Senators' offensive success came from Red Dooin (3 for 7, Double, RBI) and Kid Gleason (3 for 8, Double, Run, RBI).

Game 14: Boston Americans vs. Washington Senators

It took some late-inning heroics, but the visiting Boston Americans (8-6) topped the Washington Senators (8-6) by a 4 to 3 score. With the victory, the Americans moved into a 2nd place tie with four other teams; 1 game behind the New York Highlanders for the American League top spot.

This was a decent performance for both starting pitchers, with Johnny Lush (3-1) picking up the win by limiting the opposition to 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits while striking out 7, though control problems impacted his outing as he allowed 7 walks, 1 wild pitch, 1 hit batsman, and 1 balk; Game Score 69. In the loss, Jack Chesbro (3-1) allowed 4 earned runs on 16 hits to finish with a Game Score 42.

Boston had several fine hitting performances from its lineup, including Bill Lange (4 for 5, Double, 2 Runs), Frank Chance (3 for 4, Double, Run, RBI), Fred Clarke (2 for 4, 2 RBIs), and Danny Shay (3 for 4, Stolen Base). Duff Cooley (2 for 2, Double, Walk) played well in the loss.
