The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired right-handed relief pitcher Victor Arano from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Pablo Lopez and outfielder Eloy Jimenez.
Arano, 31, has spent most of the season with AAA Durham while playing one game in the majors.
At Durham, he pitched in 19 games going 2-2 with six saves and a 4.00 ERA.
He pitched two scoreless innings for the Rays in a 5-0 loss to Kansas City on July 7.
Arano broke into the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018.
He also appeared in the majors with the Phillies in 2019.
Arano also has had major league stints with Washington (2022) and the Los Angeles Angeles (2024-2025).
He was acquired by Tampa Bay from the Angels during the 2025 season.
In 186 major league games, with one start, Arano is 8-7 with five saves and a 4.07 ERA.
Arano likely will be added to the Cardinals major-league bullpen.
Acquired from the Twins before he 2025 season, Lopez went 10-12 with a 3.82 ERA for the Cardinals that year.
He opened this season in the starting rotation but because of a series of poor outings, was regulated to the bullpen.
Lopez has gone 5-6 with a 6.39 ERA in 21 games/16 starts season.
The Cardinals will pay 30 percent of his remaining $28 million salary.
St. Louis signed Jimenez as a free agent in the offseason.
He got into 26 games/22 starts for them hitting .189 with two home runs and seven RBIs.

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired 28-year-old infielder Jonathan Aranda from the Washington Nationals in exchange for minor-league infielder Gabriel Arias
The left-handed hitting Aranda has played 25 games/16 starts with Washington this season and hit .322 with five home runs and 15 RBIs.
At AAA Rochester, Aranda hit .309 with 11 home runs and 40 RBIs in 55 games/all starts.
Aranda also has played in the majors for the Cleveland Guardians and Tampa Bay Rays.
He broke into the majors in 2022 with the Rays.
In 107 major league games, Arias has hit .263 with nine home runs and 38 RBIs.
Signed as a minor-league free agent before the 2026 season, Arias played in eight games/seven starts for the Cardinals this season.
In those games, he hit .105 with three RBIs.
At AAA Memphis, Arias played in 62 games/61 starts and hit .259 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs.
Arias played in the majors for the Guardians during the 2022 and 23 seasons.
Overall, he has 146 games of major league experience during which he has hit .202 with 11 home runs and 34 RBIs.

St. Louis Cardinals rookie outfielder Gavin Cross has been suspended for three games after he charged the mound after being hit by a Jackson Wolf pitch during the eighth inning of an 11-1 loss in Pittsburgh.
Wolf hit Cross after giving up a home run to the St. Louis' Willson Contreras which would the team's lone run of the game.
Wolf also was suspended, he will sit for seven games.

The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired utility player Sam Haggerty from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for infielder Gio Urshela and minor-league outfielder Spencer Nivens.
Haggerty, 32, broke into the majors with the New York Mets in 2019 and has since played with the Seattle Mariners (2020-23) and Royals (2024-26).
This season in 82 games/70 starts, he has hit .256 with five home runs and 26 RBIs.
For his career, he has played in 386 games/238 starts and hit .240 with 16 home runs and 81 RBIs.
Picked up by St. Louis in the offseason to be a backup at the corner infield positions, Urshela has been a disappointment hitting .175 with one home run and six RBIs in 37 games/24 starts.
Nivens, 24, has split the 2026 season between Class AA Springfield and AAA Memphis.
In 66 games/69 starts, he has hit .245 with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs.
