20 July 2298 - Nuka World Baseball League News

The Nuka World Baseball League, an independent league from the Commonwealth Baseball Organization, has announced that it will begin its league a year ahead of the original 2300 plan.

There had been various posters around the Bradberton and Nuka World park locations advertising the baseball league as early as in the spring of 2297. One posted is pictured below.

However, John-Caleb Bradberton announced today that the league had progressed at a faster rate than he expected and eight baseball parks had been built to attract fans to the stadiums. The league released its league logo and announced the official final tally of the eight initial teams of the NWBL.

The teams are based on a flavor of Nuka-Cola as well as various unique features of the Bradberton area. Logos and uniforms will be announced later.

Cherry Ghoulrillas based at the Grandchester Mystery Mansion
Dark Bloodworms based at Dry Rock Gulch park
Grape Painted Ghouls based at Kiddie Kingdom park
Orange Tourists based at Nuka-Town USA
Quantum Nukalurks based at the Nuka-Cola Bottling Plant

The Galleria Robotics Experts racked up a win at General Atomics Galleria Park, bumping off the Malden Grognaks, 9-4. Chris Deathclaw, who started for Galleria, pitched effectively for his team. With the win, Galleria pushed its record to 34-20.

The Robotics Experts got a big at-bat from right fielder Caleb Cavedoor. For the game, Cavedoor was 1 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the third, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Galleria a 3-1 lead.

"Our goal is to improve each and every day," Cavedoor told the Galleria Observer.

20 July 2298 - BMU: Snipers Get Past Postal Square in Exciting 9th

Trinity Plaza picked up a win at Memory Den Field, bumping off the Postal Square Action Boys, 5-4, with each team scoring three runs in the 9th inning. Pitcher Oscar Chekhemani was a major reason the Snipers emerged victorious. With the victory, the Snipers upped their record to 30-24.

The Snipers were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth when pinch hitter Shawn Burton turned a 1-1 fastball from Taco LaVergne into a bases-clearing triple. The walk-off triple electrified the Memory Den Field denizens and sent the Snipers home with a thrilling 5-4 win.

"Exhilarating win," said Chekhemani.

20 July 2298 - BMU: Savelli Helps Flamers Beat Refractors, 8-3

In the 8-3 Corvega win over C.I.T. Ruins, the impact of Bat Savelli was substantial. Savelli, who is tied for 7th in the CA with a .330 batting average, was 4-4 with a triple, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs. Jason Bourque earned the win to go to 1-0. He allowed 2 runs on 8 hits, with 1 walk and 7 strikeouts in 7 innings of work. Corvega is now 24-30, C.I.T. Ruins 30-24.

The Flamers picked up the win with a combination of good hitting and good pitching.

"We'll savor this win," Savelli told the Corvega Daily News, "then get ready for the next game."

20 July 2298 - Stoops, Assaultrons Wallop Radstags, 10-1
Easy Town shortstop Matt Stoops contributed to his team's 10-1 win over the Concord Radstags. Stoops, who is tied for 6th in the NCA in doubles with 29, went 3 for 5 with 1 run scored to lead the offensive attack for the Assaultrons. The victory gives Easy Town a record of 40-35.

With Easy Town leading 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh, Stoops came up to bat against Concord pitcher Brent Brewer. Stoops hit a slider to left-center for a grand slam home run. His 4th home run of the season put the Assaultrons on top, 10-1.

"It was a solid team effort," said Stoops after the game.

Angel Waterdrink (11-7) pitched the complete-game victory for the Assaultrons. In 9.0 innings, he allowed one earned run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

20 July 2298 - Ninjas Top Hancocks, 3-1, Behind Wallace

The Egret Ninjas picked up a win at Third Rail Stadium at S. Boston HS, knocking off the Goodneighbor Hancocks, 3-1. On the mound for Egret was left-hander Phlip Wallace, who played a pivotal role in the win. The Ninjas improve their record to 32-43 with the win over Goodneighbor.

Wallace allowed 1 run on 3 hits over 8.1 innings for the Ninjas. He walked 2 and struck out 6.

"There's a lot of passion in our clubhouse," said Wallace. "When we put it together we're a great ball club."

20 July 2298 - Shed Now 9-7 After Subduing Synths

Nordhagen Beach rode a fine outing from starter Julian Shed to victory over the Lexington Synths at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. The final score was 8-2. The Party Boys have now won 9 straight.

The Synths had few good swings against Shed, the left-hander, who threw 101 pitches over 9 innings. He allowed just 2 runs on 3 hits.

"Julian -- his tempo and rhythm were good," said Party Boys manager Craig Robinson. "He was the key to us winning."

Michael Fogcrawler led the Party Boys bats. In four at bats, he had three hits, including a double. He scored once and drove in three. Taboo Richardson hit his 10th home run of the season.

20 July 2298 - Silver Shroud Roll Over Four Leafs, 12-4

Fort Hagen and Finch Farm put this game in the books despite a radstorm.

A good performance from left fielder Andre Grogg helped the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud defeat the Finch Farm Four Leafs, 12-4. Grogg went 2 for 3 with a home run, a double, and 2 walks, while scoring 3 times for the Silver Shroud. Derek Green was the winning pitcher. Over 5 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 8 hits, with 1 walk and 9 strikeouts.

Sam Noob swatted a grand slam home run for Fort Hagen in the bottom of the sixth. The right fielder went 2 for 5 for the game, including 1 home run and 1 double. He scored 1 run and batted in 4. The Shroud hit four home runs in the game.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Grogg told the Fort Hagen Bulletin.

Fort Hagen raised its record to 42-33 with the win.

Finch Farm's Ginger Rogers set a dubious mark of striking out five times in five at bats. That ties the North Charles Association record.

July 2298 - News and Notes - July 21

I overlooked the trade of the first story because there was no news story. I have no idea why some trades do not generate a news story. So, let me go back through the time machine to 7 July 2298:

Casey Diehl was traded from the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys to the Roxbury Knuckle Punchers in exchange for C Omar Andrade and RF Maxx Murtaugh. He had been supplanted in the starting rotation by Derek Gist, who has developed over the course of the season to move from the bullpen to the starting lineup. Diehl had not started since Gist became the fourth pitcher on 26 June.

In 13 starts with Nordhagen Beach, Diehl was 7-1 with a 4.57 ERA. In 90.2 innings, he allowed 46 earned runs on 91 hits with 28 walks and 52 strikeouts.

Murtaugh was the 2nd round pick by the Party Boys in the 2296 Rookie Draft. He was traded to the Knuckle Punchers in July 2297 for 3B Buck Wheat and RP Jason Vaultick. Now he has been traded back to Nordhagen Beach. In 26 games in 2298 with 17 starts for Forest Grove, Murtaugh was 18 for 66 (.273) with two doubles, three triple, two home runs, 14 runs, and eight RBI.

21 July 2298 - BMU: Ex-Party Boy Diehl Pitches CG Shutout

The Forest Grove Mole Rats posted a 5-0 shutout over the Eastlake Aquaboys today on the strength of a strong performance by Casey Diehl. The Mole Rats pitcher held the Aquaboys to 3 hits while walking 3 and fanning 10 in the route-going win.

"It feels good to be wearing a Forest Grove Mole Rats uniform today," the right-hander said following the game. "This season has been a bit of a disappointment for me, so getting a start like this is definitely a pick-me-up."

Leadoff hitter Travis Dutton led the Mole Rats in offense. He was 3 for 4 in the game with his first home run of the season, two runs, and two RBI.

21 July 2298 - BMU: Robotics Experts Stay Hot, Beat Grognaks, 7-3

Galleria beat Malden on the strength of starter Punky Shaum's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 7-3. Shaum, the winner, moves to 6-6. He threw 5 innings of 1-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 7 walks. The first-place Robotics Experts have won 5 in a row.

Bill Hulk, who is tied for 3rd in the CA with a .367 batting average, aided the Galleria cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the third. For the game, the first baseman went 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He scored 2 times.

Hulk called the win "a lesson in teamwork."

21 July 2298 - BMU: Multi-HR Day for Eakle as Lifegivers Overpower Raybathers, 9-6

Behind the hitting of Chris Eakle, the Union Hope Lifegivers stopped the Mystic Pines Raybathers, 9-6. Eakle hit 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice for the Lifegivers. Union Hope reliever Brad Chatter got the win, raising his record to 1-1. Roy Lach was tagged with the loss. The win elevated the Lifegivers to 30-25.

Eakle had a game-changing home run in the top of the sixth. On a 0-1 slider from Roy Lach, he banged a grand slam home run to right, giving the Lifegivers a 9-5 lead. It was the 13th home run of the year for Eakle.

"We take it day by day here," said Eakle, "and today was a good one for us."

21 July 2298 - BMU: Byrd, Robobrains Beat T-60s, 5-2

Harry Byrd led Mass Pike to a triumph over Fiddler's Green. The final score was 5-2. The second baseman went 4 for 5, falling a triple shy of the cycle. He scored 3 runs and added 2 RBI. Joker Griffith converted his 16th save in 17 tries. The Robobrains raised their record to 26-29.

In the top of the third, with the game still scoreless, Byrd hit a run-scoring single to put his team in the lead.

Byrd called the win "a collective effort."

Bad day to be in first place!

22 July 2298 - Radstags Suffer 12-2 Drubbing

The Starlight Lady Killers topped the Concord Radstags by a score of 12-2. Leading the way was center fielder Glenn Higinbotham. Higinbotham hit 2 home runs. He scored 4 times and drove in 3 for the Lady Killers. Starlight pitcher Jonathan Newman got the win. He's now 9-10. Chris Radsco was tagged with the loss. Spider Caddell notched his 1st save in 1 chances.

One pivotal at-bat came with two out in the top of the third. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and Concord trailing 3-1, Jonathan Newman needed to bear down against David Stahl. Newman won the battle, as Stahl grounded out and the Lady Killers went on to win.

With the win, Starlight pushed its record to 41-35.

22 July 2298 - Chemists Score 20, Pound Silver Shroud

The 20-4 Sunshine Tidings win over Fort Hagen was due largely to Brightsun Ramos. The Chemists right fielder went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles and a walk, while scoring 4 times and driving in 3. The winner was Danny Beerholder, who threw 112 pitches over 8 innings. The right-hander was charged with 4 runs on 10 hits. The Chemists go to 30-46 with the win.

Sunshine Tidings relied on the hitting of Ryan Bobb to pick up the win. The third baseman clubbed a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning to put the Chemists on top, 7-0. For the game, Bobb had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"I guess we'll all be a happy family for at least one day," said Ramos.

Frank Corsica also had a stellar day at the plate. He was 4 for 6 with two runs scored and four RBI.

Fort Hagen ace starter had the most miserable start of his career. Without having recorded an out in the top of the first, he allowed seven earned runs on six hits with a walk and no strikeouts. He also gave up a first-inning grand slam to Chemist third baseman Ryan Bobb. Bobb led Sunshine Tidings with five RBI.

Ben Pawlak had a good showing for the Shroud. He was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI.

With the loss and Abernathy's win, Fort Hagen has now fallen a game behind the Adamantium in the Institute League race.

22 July 2298 - Deathclaws Edge Hancocks, 3-2, for Needed Win

The Goodneighbor Hancocks went down to defeat to William Radwater and his University Point teammates. The final score was 3-2 in favor of the Deathclaws. In 8 innings, Radwater surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 0. He allowed 1 run. The win gives University Point a season record of 40-36.

The Deathclaws got a big at-bat from right fielder Kory Richardson. For the game, Richardson was 1 for 3 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the fourth, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 19th home run of the season gave University Point a 3-1 lead.

"I had pretty good command out there," said Radwater.

Perhaps the bigger news was the end of Good Don Duck's 22-game hitting streak. The right fielder went 0-for-4 on the day.

"We felt if we could slow down Duck, we would win the game," Deathclaws manager Woody Lumpkin explained. "They really seemed to feed off his streak, so we tried to put more emphasis on shutting him down."

This year Duck is hitting .370 with 120 hits, 11 home runs, 50 RBIs and has scored 76 runs.

22 July 2298 - Swatters Bridle T-51s, 4-2

Diamond City picked up a win at The Great Green Jewel, toppling the Oberland T-51s, 4-2. Pitcher Mark Stuhlsatz was one of the reasons the Swatters triumphed. Josh Samm converted his 21st save in 25 tries. Diamond City has now won 3 in a row.

Wayne Lacy took Lennie Landslide deep in the bottom of the third. His solo home run put the Swatters on top, 2-1. In all, Lacy had 2 singles in addition to the home run, while going 3 for 4.

"We played hard and won," said Stuhlsatz. "Sometimes, baseball really is that easy."

22 July 2298 - Bloodbugs Win Thriller, 3-2

Fans saw a dandy of a game between the County Crossing Bloodbugs and Nordhagen Beach Party Boys.

County Crossing starter Zach DiGrande pitched well against the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys at Beantown Brewery Stadium. The left-hander led his team to a win, 3-2. DiGrande went 9 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 0, and struck out 4. His record improves to 6-12.

Manley Nebeker was the walk-off hero for County Crossing. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bloodbugs pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single off reliever Sia Abber (2-2) to send the teams home.

"Getting ahead of the hitters was the key," said DiGrande.

The last-place Bloodbugs raised their record to 32-44. It marked only their second win of the season off the Boys and broke the Boys' eight-game winning streak.

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

23 July 2298 - CBO Draft Order Not to Be Locked by League Finish

CBO Commissioner Nate Howard, answering a question about the 2298 Rookie Draft said that there was a previously unannounced change to the Rooke Draft, which he addressed in a radio interview on Diamond City Radio.

Responding to a question about what the draft order might look like, Howard said the new association alignment meant that the order was no longer determined by worst record according to place in a league but just worst record.

"The last two years," Howard said, "every sixth place team was guaranteed one of the first four picks in the draft. However, this season, it does not matter where a team finishes in its league. A fourth place team could pick number three overall if it has the third-worst record in the CBO."

Howard used the Railroad League as an example of his scenario. Right now, Egret is in fourth place in the RL with a 33-43 record. Currently only the sixth-place teams of each league has a worse record. Roxbury and Atom currently hold the two worst records with 20 and 29 wins, respectively.

"Yes, Egret could pick third overall if they happen to finish behind current last-place teams like County Crossing, Sunshine Tidings, and the Atom Cats," Howard said.

Before this season, finishing in fourth place would have meant that the Ninjas would pick in the range from 9th through 12th. Howard said he made the change to avoid teams volleying for draft position.

"I would hope that any pick in the Top Ten would be considered of value," he said. "However, I want teams to continue to battle not to finish last. We want teams employing the 'last stand' mentality for every game they play, even if they are eliminated from the playoffs."

Roxbury looks to be the team most likely to own the number one overall pick in 2298, which would be the second time that has happened. They also finished with the CBO-worst record of 18-42 in 2296 before finishing third at 30-30 in 2297. The Knuckle Punchers also look like they will be the first team eliminated from 2298 playoff contention. Currently they trail 2nd place Diamond City by 21 games with just 32 to play. The Knuckle Punchers have already been eliminated from League champion potential, trailing Oberland by 36 games.

The current top ten draft order following Friday's games looks like this:
1. Roxbury, RL (20-56)
2. Atom, ML (29-47)
3. Sunshine Tidings, IL (30-46)
4. Vault 81, RL (31-45)
5. County Crossing, BL (32-44)
6-T. Egret, RL (33-43)
6-T. Jamaica Plain, ML (33-43)
6-T. Lexington, IL (33-43)
6-T. Salem, BL (33-43)
10-T. Concord, IL (35-41)
10-T. Finch Farm, BL (35-41)

Tie breakers would be determined at the conclusion of the regular season. If two teams are tied and in the same association, the first tie breaker would be head-to-head matchups with the better record being awarded the higher pick. That would be a further encouragement for teams out of the playoff race to work harder even at the end of the season. A three-way tie or interassociation tie would require other tie breakers, but the best team of those would be awarded the highest pick in the draft.

23 July 2298 - Gonzalez, Richardson Hit 2 Home Runs in Deathclaws Win

Bernie Gonzalez and Kory Richardson were instrumental in their team's 11-4 triumph over the Goodneighbor Hancocks when each hit 2 home runs. Gonzalez drove in 3 runs and scored twice for the University Point Deathclaws. Richardson drove in three and scored three times. The win puts University Point at 41-36 this season.

Richardson, who is on pace for 112 RBI this season, contributed to the University Point win with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to put the Deathclaws up for good on first-place Goodneighbor.

"We did more than enough to get the win," said Gonzalez.

23 July 2298 - Diner Leads Warwick to 5-0 Win Over Jamaica Plain

The strong arm of John Diner dealt a lot of misery to the Red Rockets. He tossed a complete-game shutout to spark the Warwick Mirelurks to a 5-0 win. In today's contest at Red Rockets Stadium, Diner limited Jamaica Plain to 4 hits and had 10 strikeouts and 1 walk.

So far in 21 appearances this season, Diner has recorded 8 wins and sustained 9 losses. He has pitched 129 innings, yielded 147 hits, fanned 104 and has a 4.53 ERA.

23 July 2298 - T-51s Lose to Swatters in Walk Off

The Diamond City Swatters walked off with a big win.

The Oberland T-51s wasted an impressive 7.1-inning effort from starter Sheng Kawolski, falling 2-1 to the Diamond City Swatters at The Great Green Jewel. Diamond City reliever Josh Samm picked up the win, upping his record to 3-5. Matt Breakball took the loss.

Alex Slumpbuster was the walk-off hero for Diamond City. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Swatters pinch hitter hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"We fed off the energy of the crowd at the end," Slumpbuster said.

With the win, Diamond City raised its record to 42-35. The Swatters have earned an important series win over the CBO's best team to help their own playoff pursuit.

23 July 2298 - Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Silver Shroud

The home crowd had a good time watching the Sunshine Tidings Chemists and Fort Hagen Silver Shroud get after it.

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud knocked off the Sunshine Tidings Chemists, 10-2, at Hubris Comics Park. Jim Tiller was a big reason Fort Hagen won. The first baseman was 2 for 3 with 2 doubles and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 2. With the win, Fort Hagen pushed its record to 43-34.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the game was tied 2-2. Then the Silver Shroud bat woke up against Tony Bertha (6-10). Andre Grogg walked to start off the inning and then moved to third on Jason Niederer moved him to third with a single. Seth Dungan then singled in Grogg for the lead. Micah Morals then reached on an error to load the bases with nobody out. Tiller then doubled in two for the 5-2 lead.

After Mark Miller was intentionally walked to load the bases, Ben Pawlak singled in two for a 7-2 lead. Bertha was then pulled for Warren Gee. That move made no difference as Sam Noob took advantage of the new pitcher to hit a three-run bomb to set the final score at 10-2. Gee got the next three batters out.

"Our goal is to improve each and every day," Niederer told the Fort Hagen Bulletin.

23 July 2298 - Big Day for Mart in 15-9 Party Boys Win

Dustin Mart left his imprint on the 15-9 Nordhagen Beach win against the County Crossing Bloodbugs. Mart, who is on pace for 84 RBI this season, went 4 for 5 with a home run, a triple, and 2 singles, while scoring 3 times and driving in 2. The winning pitcher was Tommy Beach (12-3) who needed the offense to help him. He went 5.1 innings, allowing 7 runs on 10 hits for the Party Boys. Nordhagen Beach improves to 50-27 with the win. They lead their division by 7 games.

With one out in the top of the third, Taboo Richardson barreled up a cutter from Little Jemmy Madison. The result was a grand slam home run, putting the Party Boys in front, 10-1. The Party Boys hit a total of four home runs with Michael Fogcrawler and Tomas Jones each had a solo shot.

"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Richardson told the Nordhagen Beach News.

24 July 2298 - BMU: College Square Closer Suspended Two Games by Team

College Square rookie closer Muther Eckstein has been suspended by the team for two games following playing hookie from a weekend practice.

Epstein returned to the team this morning with a handwritten excuse note in his handwriting that was signed "Eckstein's Mother." Nerd Ragers manager Jeremy Jenkins didn't buy it.

"We have suspended Muther Eckstein for the next two games due to missing practice," Jenkins said. "We are on a 10-game winning streak and currently in first place. We want to keep working hard to maintain that position, so all of our players need to know that we expect 100% every single day. Missing practice is 0%, not 100%."

Eckstein is 2-1 with 13 saves and a 4.28 ERA in 26 appearances.

24 July 2298 - Mirelurks RF Sanderson 4-5 in Win

The Warwick Mirelurks topped the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets by a score of 11-6. Leading the way was right fielder Melon Sanderson. Sanderson was 4 for 5 with a home run, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5 for the Mirelurks. The triumph puts Warwick at 44-34 for the season.

In the top of the third of a scoreless game, Sanderson hit a 3-run home run to put his team ahead.

Sanderson said he was "thrilled" the fans had something to get excited about.

24 July 2298 - Shuster Lifts Knuckle Punchers to Win

The Roxbury Knuckle Punchers went home winners at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury, thanks in large part to starter Tyler Shuster. Shuster stifled the Egret Ninjas, enabling Roxbury to grab the 6-1 win. The victory makes Roxbury 21-57.

Shuster (4-6), who was born in Bourne, Massachusetts, threw 101 pitches over 9 innings, while allowing 1 run. He dropped his season ERA to 6.03.

"It's a mindset," said Shuster. "Just trying to do your job, trying to be consistent."

Rookie RF Young Goodman led the Punchers in batting, going for 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBI.

24 July 2298 - Deathclaws Squelch Hancocks Offense in Shutout Win, Sweep

University Point Deathclaws pitcher Adam Froggatt was in fine form, leading his team past the Goodneighbor Hancocks, 5-0. The first-place Hancocks have dropped 4 straight games.

In the top of the sixth, the Deathclaws found themselves in a jam. Goodneighbor had runners on 2nd and 3rd with two out. The score was 2-0, University Point. Jason Juras was at the plate, hoping to deal the Deathclaws a serious blow. Instead, he struck out to end the threat.

24 July 2298 - Chemists Spill Silver Shroud, 8-4, Win Series

The Sunshine Tidings Chemists topped the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud, 8-4, in North Charles Association action at Hubris Comics Park. The game was highlighted by the performance of Sunshine Tidings first baseman Jalen Wharton. Sunshine Tidings pitcher Bill Sarnacki got the win, upping his record to 7-11. Joey Dimes got the loss. The Chemists go to 31-47 with the win.

Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Frank Corsica? The Sunshine Tidings center fielder had a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Chemists on top, 5-1. For the game, Corsica had 2 doubles and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"It feels good to get this one," Corsica told the Sunshine Tidings Bulletin.

24 July 2298 - Bloodbugs Shock Party Boys, 5-1, Claim Series Win

Jeff Rickashaw was locked and loaded, helping the County Crossing Bloodbugs beat the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, 5-1. The Bloodbugs saw their record improve to 33-45.

In the bottom of the first, Josh Noggin hit a 3-run home run. The 20th home run of the season for the County Crossing first baseman put the Bloodbugs on top, 3-0. Noggin finished with four RBI.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Noggin said after the game.

July 2298 - News and Notes - July 25

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

25 July 2298 - BMU: Greentop Nursery Outfielder Leading MVP Charge

Greentop Nursery Night People (Nordhagen Beach) outfielder Jonathan Angelou leads the Boston Minor Union in the race for the BMU MVP, that is, if the Party Boys leave him in the minors.

Angelou is currently the leader in the BMU with a 3.1 WAR despite playing eight games for Nordhagen Beach during the season.

Selected in the 11th round of the 2296 Inaugural Draft, Angelou was not able to gain his footing in the Party Boys' lineup with the likes of Michael Fogcrawler and Tomas Jones in the corner outfield.

Angelou has appeared in 43 games for the Night People. starting 34 of those games. In 117 at bats, he had 43 hits (.368) with five doubles and 16 home runs with 41 runs scored and 43 RBI. His .368 average is good enough for third in the Commonwealth Association, while his 16 home runs lead the the association. He has by far the best Slugging Pct (.821) and OBPS (1.349).

He was not as successful in his six starts with the Party Boys this season. He was 4 for 22 (.182) with two home runs, two runs, and six RBI.

"I have been working hard to be the best I can be," Angelou said. "If I need to help Greentop win a championship, then I will work hard to do that. If I need to help Nordhagen Beach win it, then that is what I will work hard to do. I won't worry about where I play. I'll just play hard wherever it is."

25 July 2298 - Finch Farm-Goodneighbor Trade: Rocky for Swindler

The Baseball News Network is reporting that the Four Leafs and Hancocks have consummated a trade. Goodneighbor will receive 34-year-old RHP Steve Rocky and 20-year-old minor league C Silly Goose in a swap for 20-year-old minor league RHP Isaiah Swindler and 20-year-old minor league RHP Ken Windhammer. A league analyst called the trade a "fairly even transaction."

Up to now Rocky has compiled an ERA of 4.80 with a 8-8 mark over 20 starts. He has 69 strikeouts in 129.1 innings and has held opponents to a .310 batting average. Rocky led the Brotherhood League in wins in 2296 after posting a 12-3 mark.

25 July 2298 - BMU: CA Trophy Goes to McLeod of Outpost Zimonja

19-year-old Josh McLeod made a few Outpost Zimonja headlines during this past week as the rookie second baseman proved he could compete at the plate with his CBO idols. He captured the attention of fans, journalists, and Commonwealth Association officials last week and today took home Player of the Week honors for his effort.

He cracked 8 hits in 15 at-bats to put up a .533 average. McLeod collected 2 home runs, 8 RBIs and scored 4 runs.

For the season McLeod is currently batting .300 with 6 home runs and 27 RBIs. In 45 games he has reached base at a .412 rate and scored 20 runs to date.

25 July 2298 - BMU: Super Week for Mass Pike's Byrd!

It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the Massachusetts Association, but last week Harry Byrd of the Mass Pike Robobrains reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Byrd rocked opposing pitching for a .563 average (9-for-16), 1 home run and 5 RBIs to come away with the award.

For the season, Byrd is hitting at a .406 clip with 1 home run, 8 RBIs and has scored 6 runs. He has 13 hits, 6 walks and a .525 on-base percentage. The rookie has only appeared in 15 games this season, starting seven.

25 July 2298 - Sunshine Tidings's Corsica Gets NCA Player of the Week

At the age of 28, Frank Corsica might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Sunshine Tidings center fielder put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .545 batting average. For his efforts Corsica collected the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 12 hits in 22 at-bats, 1 home run and 10 RBIs last week in 5 games.

Thus far this season Corsica is hitting .340 with 12 home runs, 64 RBIs and 57 runs scored. He has 110 hits in 324 at-bats and has played in 78 games.

25 July 2298 - SCA Star of the Week Picked

One of the league's most exciting young players, Hose Wallcrawler of the FHE Yao Guai earned himself South Charles Association Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

For the week the 20-year-old shortstop had a lofty .391 average (9-for-23), collecting 3 home runs, 8 RBIs and 5 runs scored.

In 78 games this season Wallcrawler has batted at a .333 pace with 105 hits and 14 home runs.

2298 Week 16 - The Week in Review

Analysis

Despite losing their weekend series, the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys have claimed the #2 spot over Goodneighbor who is in the middle of a four-game losing streak. The Party Boys suffered a rare series loss to County Crossing, which has been the Beach Boys' tonic through troubled times in the first three seasons of the CBO. Still, Nordhagen Beach is tied with Abernathy for the CBO-best record in their last ten games with an 8-2 mark.

Abernathy has rejoined the top four after they got a series sweep of Lexington and saw league rivals Fort Hagen and Starlight drop their weekend series. The Adamantium can now claim a two-game lead over the Silver Shroud and three games over the Lady Killers. There is still a lot of season left, but Abernathy has been a pesky bloatfly in this bloated Institute League.

University Point was the biggest riser in this week's power poll after they got a much-needed sweep of first-place Goodneighbor. With the series win, the Deathclaws were able to gain a game on Warwick in the battle for the Minutemen League wildcard slot. The Mirelurks now lead the wildcard spot by two games after beating Jamaica Plain two out of three.

To round out our trip around the league bases, Diamond City also had a huge week, going 4-1, including winning two out of three pitchers' duels over the CBO-best Oberland T-51s. Their successful week showed that they can play with the best, making them a dangerous team in the playoffs, should they earn the wildcard spot in the Railroad League. It also helped them jump one more game up on FHE for a four-game lead after the Yao Guai dropped two of three against Vault 81.

Trades Analysis - A Few Winners and Losers So Far

Let us take this time to look at three moves that have been paying off so far and three that have not been doing as well. These three below are one-sided as three NCA teams improved, while three SCA teams still seek the right fit.

Winner

Nordhagen Beach: Acquired 3B Jon Hitman from FHE - The Hitman was already having a good season when he joined the Party Boys, batting .317 in 164 at bats with 11 doubles, a triple, and a home run. Since joining Nordhagen Beach, he has been a lot more efficient, probably because there are good hitters hitting before him and pitchers are just exhausted by the time they face Hitman in the lineup. In just 18 games and 73 at bats, Hitman has 26 hits, nine of them doubles and two of them home runs, for a .356 average. In 91 fewer at bats with the Boys, he has hit just two fewer extra-base hits, an impressive increase and a great boon to Nordhagen Beach becoming the top offense in the North Charles Association.

Loser

FHE: Acquired 3B Tommy Talkington from Nordhagen Beach - Talkington looked to be on a downward and unexplained spiral since his impressive 2296 season where he hit .352 with 16 home runs and drove in 51 runs in 60 games. He struggled a lot in 2297 and got even worse in 2298. batting below .200 in both season, including leading the BL in strikeouts in 2297 with 79 compared to just 49 hits. He also saw his homers drop down to a total of 17 in those two seasons combined. With the Yao Guai, he has not earned opportunities despite seeming to replace Hitman. In seven at bats, he doubled once for a .143 average there. He struck out in four of his seven at bats. He is a liability at the plate despite his power.

Winner

Abernathy: Acquired RP Bob Parkman from Atom - Parkman has not had a lot of opportunities so far with the Adamantium in just three weeks, but he fills a hole for the Adamantium. In his two games appeared, he has pitched five scoreless innings, with four hits allowed and four strikeouts. Abernathy is not using him as their closer--that role is for --but he can fill in the role if needed with his two-pitch arsenal of fastball with a good change up.

Loser

Quincy: Acquired CF Steve Gunkill from Jamaica Plain - Gunkill was supposed to help a struggling position for the Gunners who are hoping to make a playoff run. Based on this move, they are still in the trade game to find that outfielder they need to be consistent. Since joining the Gunners, Gunkill has only managed four starts, and those have not been good. He is 4 of 27 (.148) with Quincy with a home run, four runs scored, and two RBI. His OBP in 2297 was .356 with Vault 81. So far with Quincy, it is .207. There must be some reason Gunkill is with his fourth teams in just three seasons. At this rate, he may end up with his fifth.

Winner

Fort Hagen: Acquired CL Radscorpion Johnson from Vault 81 - Like Abernathy above, league rival the Silver Shroud helped their bullpen tremendously by acquiring Johnson from the Dwellers. Changing his role from closer to reliever in Fort Hagen, Johnson has pitched 6.1 innings in four appearances so far. Those innings have yielded no runs, three hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. When Johnson gets right-handed batters to two strikes, his slider has been deadly against NCA batters, just like he showed with 31 strikeouts in just 28.2 innings with the Dwellers before.

Loser

Goodneighbor: Acquired 3B Jason Juras from Egret - Like Nordhagen Beach, the Hancocks wanted to improve their 3B position, but Juras is not looking to be the right fit in just over two weeks with the team. In nine starts, Juras has seeon his batting average at .167 (6 for 36) with a double, a home run, and 14 strikeouts. He is a strikeout machine, but he was hitting .277 with the Ninjas with nine doubles, five triples, and 13 home runs. The Hancocks may need to consider making another move before the trade deadline to get production at that position. They are still the best offense, but dead weight can cost them in key playoff moments.

The View from the BMU

Today in the CBO

The View from the BMU

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

26 July 2298 – Malden

On certain Tuesdays for the 2297 and 2298 seasons, we will feature one of the settlements where teams in the Boston Minor Union play.

In our nineteenth trip around the BMU, we will go to another large town center marked for a future CBO team once the town is full-go, Malden.

Malden, A Geographical Study

According to a terminal, "Malden is a hilly woodland area north of the Mystic River, tracing its roots back to before the American Revolutionary War. The pre-War township is bordered by an elevated freeway to the east and west and the river to the south, surrounded by industrial landscape.

"The Mystic River flows approximately parallel to the lower portions of the Charles River. Encompassing 76 mi2 (200 km2) of watershed, the river flows from Mystic Lake near Covenant and travels past the Boston-area communities of East Boston, Charlestown, Malden, Medford, and Arlington.

"From Mystic Lake, the waterway is held by a dam near a military checkpoint above the west shore. After passing Wattz Consumer Electronics and Poseiden Energy Turbine #18-F, the river runs underneath the Tucker Memorial bridge. Continuing eastbound under two unnamed bridges past the BADTFL regional office, the Irish Pride Industries shipyard, the waterway is joined by the Malden River from the north before both emptying into the Boston Harbor near the USS Constitution.

"The river joins the Charles River to form inner Boston Harbor. The north central commonwealth area is border by the Mystic River to the south and elevated freeway to the east and west."

The township as it is now, has a giant sinkhole, called the Old Gullet Sinkhole, which has eaten up a large northern portion of the town. Still there is a lot of town left being built up and upon every day. According to a terminal entry, "The Old Gullet sinkhole is a giant crater-like hole that formed in Malden when a former neighborhood was swallowed by a sinkhole that formed sometime after the Great War. The Old Gullet sinkhole destroyed most of Malden located north of Malden Middle School and west of Greentop Nursery."

The major parts of the town and why it will be a future urban center are Medford Memorial Hospital, one of two major hospitals north of the Charles; Slocum's Joe Corporate HQ; Med-Tek Research; and Vault 75. While the Vault currently serves as housing for some residents, there is talks of turning it into the School of Malden. The vault is located in the basement of Malden Middle School.

Medford Memorial Hospital: Terminal Reports

Much of the hospital has been prepared, and there are several operable sections of the hospital, so not all information below is updated in the terminals at Boston Public Library.

"A pre-War health care institution, located in the center of Malden.

"Entering the hospital places one inside the main lobby, which is a fairly large, third-story room. . . . The lobby has many doors leading to various parts of the hospital:

"First floor
This doorway leads to a hall with one room on the right, then one on the left and a stairway leading up at the end. The room on the right contains a bed, a sink, and a couple of containers. The room on the left which is over the counter through the doorway, then the first room on the left, contains an advanced floor safe next to a desk in the actual floor with an advanced terminal. The stairs lead up to the 3rd floor west hallway. Both the north and east doorways lead to the same room.

"Second floor
To the west are two doorways. One . . . leads to a room with a broken terminal, the 2nd doorway leads to a hallway with a maintenance room to the right and a generator room to the left. A fusion core can be recovered from one of the generators and a mattress lays between two generators.

The east doorway opens into a room with several columns and a broken elevator. Continuing east leads to a nurses' station and a set of restrooms. Back at the nurses' station, the path creates a circle with an operating room in the center and multiple hospital bedrooms surrounding it. The operating room roof has collapsed, so the floor above is visible. As the circle continues, there will be another nurses' station and a staircase leading to the 3rd floor. Eventually, the path will lead back to the room with the columns and broken elevator and then the lobby.

"Third floor
To the west of the entrance is a doorway leading to another hallway. The stairs down lead to the 1st floor west hallway. To the east is a doorway beyond a collapsed floor, which leads to a hallway that has a room to the east and ends past the broken elevator with a staircase down to the second floor east hallway. The east room leads to a mag-locked caged area and the . . . terminal that opens the mag-lock.

"To the north is the . . . door to the Medford operating theater, requiring the Medford Operating Theater key. . . . The doorway leads to a small reception area with a desk and terminal that can be used to change the lighting and music in the theater or open the . . . door into the theater itself. Alternatively, one can use a staircase to the east to enter the viewing portion of the operating theater. This consists of a few rooms surrounding the theater, one of which has a staircase down into the surgical room."

Slocum's Joe Corporate HQ: Terminal Reports

"Before the Great War, the building was the headquarters for Slocum's Joe in Boston, a large coffee and donuts company. . . . Slocum's Joe was a pre-War coffee and donut company based in Malden. The company ran numerous coffee shops around the eastern United States and had a special of a large coffee and jelly donut for 30 dollars.

"A staple of pre-War Bostonian and Appalachian fast foods, Slocum's focused on two things: Joe (coffee) and doughnuts. While their food was noted by some to exceed the daily recommended amount of carbohydrates and fat, Slocum's always tried to stay one step ahead of the competition, such as by trying to solve the problem of keeping coffee hot and doughnuts fresh.

Their answer was Slocum's Buzzbites, a delicious doughnut filled with hot coffee and chemically preserved to stay hot, which had a 90% chance of inflicting 3rd-degree burns on consumers. This lead to it being deemed too dangerous for distribution by authorities. The actual coffee was noted to be "stale, acidic rubbish," priced at 28 dollars."

Med-Tek Research: Terminal Reports

"Med-Tek Research is the remains of Med-Tek Laboratories' medical research facility in the Commonwealth, still accessible in 2287.

"Owned by Med-Tek Laboratories, this private research laboratory was primarily focused on infectious diseases. One pharmaceutical in particular created by Med-Tek was an experiential treatment known as PREVENT, a treatment for an unknown disease. The facility's trials in developing PREVENT were less than ethical; an immense prison system in the facilities sub-levels housed dozens of test subjects who had been bought from an undisclosed source.

"The director of this facility got an advanced warning of the incoming nuclear attack. With the alert, the director placed the facility into lockdown to prevent contagions from spreading. The lockdown also authorized lethal force for those trying to escape, trapping all the researchers and test subjects inside. For the executives, however, they enacted evacuation procedures, escaping the carnage they built. The only known person to successfully escape the facility was Wayne Tournquist who hacked into the director's terminal to forward messages to him. Upon discovering what was about to happen, he fled the facility to gather his family and ride out the storm.

"In the two centuries that followed, the property remained locked down and infested with a horde of feral ghouls. However, rumors began to spread of the miraculous cures left inside. One rumor was about a cure for a virus that affected only teenagers and children, and produced blue boils on those afflicted."

Vault 75: Terminal Reports

"Located underneath Malden Middle School, this vault was presented to the public as a safe place for children in the school to take cover in the event of a nuclear war. When the bombs eventually fell in 2077, every designated family with a student attending the school, along with the teachers, made it to the vault in time. Upon entering, the children were separated from their families and escorted to the atrium, while the adults were executed by security staff, under the guise they were receiving "orientation." This act of murder coincided with the purpose of the vault, which was to enhance the gene pool of its selected residents to create stronger and more intelligent subjects. The surviving children were harshly tested mentally and physically - bordering on torture, and without regard for the survival of weaker individuals - as part of the experiment.

"They were raised learning about the horrors of 'Uptopland,' a nickname for the wasteland, and were told that they would be strong enough to venture out into the wastes and help the suffering people upon graduation. If they were intelligent and physically well built, they were either 'harvested' for their good genes when they turned eighteen, or those displaying good intelligence and obedience were recruited to the vault's science team after graduation. The others who were deemed insufficient to the vault's standards were killed upon reaching the age of eighteen after a ceremony 'celebrating' their graduation. However, details found in the various terminals suggest that even those who were 'graduated' were killed after harvesting. The mission of Vault 75, above all, was the refinement of human genetics.

"At some point, the vault was opened and emptied. Some internal log entries suggest there was a rebellion among the junior test subjects, aided by a 'graduate' scientist. This is backed by the way the bodies are placed in the Vault, indicating a quick and merciless breakout. Whatever the case, in 2287 there are no residents remaining, and the vault is serving as a hidden Gunners stronghold."

July 2298 - News and Notes - July 26

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

26 July 2298 - BMU: Huge 9th Rally by Refractors Locks Up 8-4 Win

The C.I.T. Refractors grabbed a win, 8-4, at Med-Tek Research Ballpark, overcoming a fine effort from Malden pitcher Keegan Richardson. Richardson went 8 innings and allowed 1 run. Malden's current losing streak has reached 5 games.

C.I.T. entered the 9th trailing 3-1. Happy Man, the 21-year old right fielder , had a direct impact on the outcome. Man contributed a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put C.I.T. Ruins up, 5-3. The Refractors went on to score three more in the inning, taking an 8-3 lead.

"Winning the game is always the first objective," Man said.

Walt Barbed (1-5) was credited with the loss and his third blown save of the season. In all, he allowed six earned runs on five hits with a walk with no recorded outs. Drew Adikpick and Blaze Redplate closed out the game for the Grognaks.

26 July 2298 - BMU: Tumbleson Electric in 8-0 Win

Chris Tumbleson shut down the Mass Pike Robobrains today, blanking them 8-0 on 3 hits, ringing up 8 strikeouts and allowing no walks. The Trinity Plaza Snipers pitcher appeared to get stronger as the game went on.

"I don't know if I was getting any stronger," Tumbleson said after the game. "I feel like my mechanics were getting better. I was able to make some adjustments and get a little more comfortable out there."

This year Tumbleson has fashioned a 2-0 mark, 0.33 ERA and pitched 27.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .212 against him and he has logged 28 strikeouts.

26 July 2298 - BMU: Aquaboys Lose to Cannibals in Walk Off

The Charles View Cannibals beat the Eastlake Aquaboys, 7-6, at Greenetech Genetics Park. Ryan Pondrose, in particular, was impressive. He was 2-4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 4. The Cannibals go to 22-34 with the win.

Shawn Synthman clinched the win with a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth. In the game, the Charles View first baseman drove in one run.

Synthman told a Charles View Herald reporter that he was "satisfied" with the win.

Eastlake scored four runs in the top of the 9th off Charles View closer Capstone Goofson to tie the game, 6-6.

26 July 2298 - Gunners Topple T-51s, 9-2, as Nuka Shines

Quincy left fielder Andrew Nuka played a vital role in his team's 9-2 triumph over Oberland. He was 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 3 for Quincy. The win puts Quincy at 42-37 this season.

Nuka hit a run-scoring double in the top of the first to help the Quincy cause. The double, which was hit off Gerald Jerry, allowed Quincy to take a 1-0 lead.

"I think we all put in a good day's work," said Nuka.

26 July 2298 - Vault 81 Punchless in 8-0 Loss to Mirelurks

19-year-old Warwick Mirelurks pitcher Dave Kovalenko had a strong outing against the Vault 81 Dwellers at The Homestead today, keeping them off the scoreboard the whole game. He struck out 13 in the 8-0 win and walked 1 while surrendering 6 hits.

"Hopefully there will be plenty more of these in the future for us," he said.

This year Kovalenko has compiled a 9-6 record with a 4.25 ERA.

26 July 2298 - Egret Wins, Danse has 3 hit night

The Egret Ninjas beat the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets, 8-4, at Red Rockets Stadium. The win was due in part to left fielder Paladin Danse, who was 3 for 4 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 2. Egret is now 35-44, while Jamaica Plain is 33-46.

Bill Chaney, the 26-year old center fielder, had a direct impact on the outcome. Chaney contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the second inning to put Egret up, 2-0.

"It was a solid team effort," said Chaney after the game.

26 July 2298 - Silver Shroud Win, 5-4, Versus Witch Hats

Fort Hagen starter Derek Green pitched well against the Salem Witch Hats at Hubris Comics Park. The left-hander led his team to a win, 5-4. Curtis Thriceshot notched his 27th save in 28 chances. The triumph puts Fort Hagen at 44-35 for the season.

Jim Tiller had a timely hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two out and the bases loaded, the Fort Hagen first baseman hit a 2-run single. That put the Silver Shroud in front, 5-4.

"I was able to get good plays made behind me," Green said. "And I was able to make pitches when I needed to make pitches."

Paul Grog of the Shroud was suspended for 2 games today by the league office for "inappropriate actions" during the game. He was ejected in the 8th inning for arguing a call after he struck out on a called third strike. His manager had to physically restrain the Silver Shroud catcher. Bixton Moore caught the 9th inning.

"You get caught up in the situation, emotions. No grudges, you move on," Grog said in the clubhouse after the game, while talking to reporters about the suspension.

For the season Grog is hitting .160, batted in 14 runs with 2 home runs and 13 runs scored.

26 July 2298 - Synths Sneak Past Party Boys, 6-5, in 12

Super Duper Mart Stadium was host to some action-packed drama.

The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys got a sterling performance from pitcher Julian Shed, but the Lexington Synths still prevailed, 6-5. Shed threw 6 innings of 4-hit ball. The loss makes Nordhagen Beach 50-29. The Synths broke a seven-game losing streak with the upset victory.

The Synths procured the win, in large part because of pinch hitter T.J. Craighead. In the bottom of the 12th, he produced the game-winning run-scoring single.

"Good win for us, tough loss for them," said Craighead.

27 July 2298 - BMU: Fireball's Hit Streak Soars to 20 Games

Steve Fireball collected 2 hits in today's game and extended his hitting streak to 20 games. His club, the Malden Grognaks, beat the C.I.T. Ruins Refractors 8-4.

"Right now, when they throw me the ball, it looks the size of a softball," Fireball quipped to a BNN reporter after the game. "I'm excited about how things are clicking."

Steve Fireball flied out in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Mike Knowles in the 2nd, flied out in the 5th, and singled in the 7th.

This year Fireball is batting .314 with 3 home runs and 30 RBIs. In 57 games he has scored 39 times.

27 July 2298 - BMU: Q Excels, But Behemoths Win

The Breakheart Banks Behemoths defeated the Mystic Pines Raybathers, 8-7. Doing his part was third baseman Ruben Q, who hit 2 home runs. He drove in 5 runs and scored twice. Ryan Mills earned the save, his 13th, for the Behemoths. The Behemoths go to 22-35 with the win.

The Behemoths got a big hit from center fielder Heston Prynne. In the bottom of the seventh, Prynne pounded a 2-run double to right. His 17th double of the season put the Behemoths ahead, 8-2.

"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Prynne told the Breakheart Banks Herald.

27 July 2298 - BMU: Robobrains Fall, 13-5, to Jelinski, Snipers

The Trinity Plaza Snipers beat the Mass Pike Robobrains by a score of 13-5. second baseman Tyler Jelinski deserved the lion's share of the credit. Jelinski went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double, while adding 6 RBI and scoring once for the Snipers. Trinity Plaza pitcher Gregg Door got the win. He's now 1-0. J.J. Campbell was tagged with the loss. Ben Faul converted his 1st save in 1 tries.

In the top of the first, Danny Vertibird jumped on a cutter from J.J. Campbell and hit a 2-run double. It gave Trinity Plaza a quick 2-0 lead.

"Feels good to get the job done," Jelinski said after the game.

The triumph puts Trinity Plaza at 33-24 for the season.

27 July 2298 - Tarberry Hits in 20 Straight Games

Ed Tarberry continued his streak at Coolest Field in Town today, even as the ballgame did not go his way. The Atom center fielder was 1-for-4 in today's contest and now has hit safely in his last 20 games. The Cats were not as fortunate, losing 8-2 to the Diamond City Swatters.

"Tarberry was hitting everything we threw at him," said Diamond City manager Bucky Bachelor. "He is a tough out. Fortunately, things went our way in the ballgame today and we came away with a win."
Ed Tarberry grounded out in the 1st, doubled in the 3rd, flied out in the 5th and grounded out in the 8th.

This season Tarberry has delivered 133 hits in 357 at-bats for a .373 average with 4 home runs. He is getting on base at a .394 clip and his totals also include 32 RBIs and 66 runs scored. This year Tarberry has played in 80 games.

27 July 2298 - Landslide Throws 6-0 Shutout

An efficient outing for Lennie Landslide usually means a win for the Oberland T-51s and today was no exception. The 32-year-old right-hander held the Quincy Gunners to a long line of goose eggs. He struck out 3 and gave up 5 hits in the 6-0 shutout.

"Lennie really got it done out there today," said Oberland manager Dirk Steadyhand.

Thus far this season, Landslide has tossed 132.2 innings in 20 starts, fanned 68 batters, walked 32 and put up a 4.41 ERA with 11 wins and 5 losses.

27 July 2298 - 20-Game Hitting Streak for Hayes

Chalk up another one for Goodneighbor Hancocks second baseman Jumper Hayes. He now has hit in 20 straight games. Hayes went 2-for-4 today's game at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury but saw his club defeated 6-5 by the host Roxbury Knuckle Punchers.

"Playing on the road always makes it harder to get hits and to get wins," Hancocks manager Jeremy Whiteplate said after the game. "We got one of the two, but unfortunately it was the wrong one."

Jumper Hayes flied out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Matt Rodrigue in the 5th, was hit by a pitch in the 7th, and flied out in the 9th.

Hayes has collected 123 hits for the Hancocks this year, 9 of them home runs. He has also netted 65 RBIs and scored 70 runs while batting .362.

"Nice to tuck this win away," said Pawlak.

27 July 2298 - Party Boys Drop Synths, 7-5

Ryan Combs was a major factor in the 7-5 Nordhagen Beach win over Lexington. The Party Boys center fielder went 3 for 5 with 3 singles. He scored 3 times. Night Demon Archacki earned his 19th save in 21 chances. The win elevated the Party Boys to 51-29.

With runs few and far between, the Party Boys had to seize their opportunities when they came. One of the most important chances for Nordhagen Beach came in the top of the second inning, when right fielder Tomas Jones delivered a 2-run single. The single was hit off Chris Morgen and made the score 3-0, Party Boys. Jones went 2-5 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs.

Combs told the Nordhagen Beach News: "Win or lose, I don't want to see our team outhustled."

28 July 2298 - FHE-Oberland Trade: Shackelford for Cushman

Fans in FHE woke up this morning to learn that their team had traded 32-year-old RHP Gimp Shackelford and 19-year-old minor league 3B Americ Boston to the Oberland T-51s. In return, the Yao Guai will receive 19-year-old minor league LHP Jim Hipp, 20-year-old minor league RHP Gabe Faulhaber and 22-year-old 2B Bryan Cushman.

Shackelford has taken the mound for 18 relief appearances this season, nailing down no saves while notching a 0-0 record with a 1.69 ERA. The reliever has limited opposing batters to a .228 batting average.

Cushman on the season is batting .326 with 1 home run. His totals include 10 RBIs and 5 runs scored. He has played in 14 games.

28 July 2298 - BMU: Big Day for Underwood as Refractors Down Grognaks, 8-4

The C.I.T. Ruins Refractors knocked off the Malden Grognaks, 8-4, at Med-Tek Research Ballpark. Marquise Underwood was a big reason C.I.T. Ruins won. The right fielder was 4 for 4 with a home run, a triple, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4. Copper Geffre, the winning pitcher, improved to 2-1. He pitched 5.2 innings, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 2 and walking 4. C.I.T. Ruins raised its record to 33-25 with the win.

Underwood had a big hit for C.I.T. Ruins with two out in the top of the fourth. With C.I.T. Ruins trailing 4-2, Underwood hit a grand slam home run. It was his 5th home run of the season and put the Refractors up, 6-4.

"Winning never gets dull," said Underwood.

The 20-game hitting streak of Steve Fireball has come to an end. The Malden Grognaks left fielder went 0-for-5 today in his team's loss.

"It's not just Steve who came up short today," Grognaks manager Rick Twocaps said in his postgame press conference. "This was a team loss."

This year Fireball has hit 3 home runs and posted a .308 batting average.

28 July 2298 - BMU: Sentry Bots Top Rayguns, 3-2, Behind Gipper

Somerville Place rode a fine outing from starter Ronnie Gipper to victory over the Cabot House Rayguns at Water and Beds Park. The final score was 3-2. Mike Hove converted his 12th save in 16 tries. The win puts Somerville Place at 30-28 this season.

Gipper, who was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, threw 100 pitches over 7.2 innings, while allowing no runs.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Gipper. "I feel like the boys won one for me today."

28 July 2298 - BMU: Flamers Top Spy Hunters, 4-2, in 10

His record improves to 2-1. Ryan Lynn took the loss. Mike Koenig earned the save for Corvega, his 12th of the year.

Runs were scarce in this one. So, Jass McLeod's at-bat in the top of the tenth was vitally important. With two out, the Corvega second baseman got hit by a pitch, driving in 1 run, to give his team a 3-2 lead.

"The key at this level is throwing strike one," said Bourque. "Successful pitchers do it."

The win puts the Flamers at 26-32, while the Spy Hunters drop to 25-33.

In an effort to add some depth to its roster, the Finch Farm Four Leafs have swapped 30-year-old 2B Alec Bullets and 20-year-old minor league 3B Jim Pearpeel to the Quincy Gunners for 23-year-old minor league CF Base McAndrews and 21-year-old minor league RHP Mark Bartolotti. Godlike stated that Noefostitos suspected foul play and demanded that Detective Nick Valentine come to Graygarden where Neofostitos is currently staying to help find his cat.

There was no other word about the status of Marbles other than Neofostitos had lost his Marbles.

29 July 2298 - Cats-Punchers Swap Nobodies

The Atom Cats traded 23-year-old minor league left fielder Tim Hardman to the Roxbury Knuckle Punchers, getting 28-year-old minor league reliever Berg Poppy in return.

29 July 2298 - Flatt Excels, But Mirelurks Win

The Warwick Mirelurks defeated the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets, 6-5. Doing his part was first baseman Cody Flatt, who went 3 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. The winner was Sheffield Williams in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Chris Teddybear took the loss. Warwick raised its record to 46-35 with the win.

Brad Krol, who is on pace for 73 RBI this season, contributed to the Warwick win with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. For the game, the second baseman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 3 RBI.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Warwick manager Old Man Langford.

29 July 2298 - Mutfruit Twirls 5-0 Shutout

The Vault 81 Dwellers shut out the FHE Yao Guai 5-0 today behind the strong pitching of Nick Mutfruit. Mutfruit surrendered only 4 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 9.

Following the last out, Mutfruit appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for FHE manager David Meatcook, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Mutfruit's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.

The Yao Guai skipper would not comment on the exchange, but at the Dwellers press conference, Mutfruit confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.

"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Mutfruit said.

"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Vault 81 manager Jason Personhood added.

This season Mutfruit has a 6-12 mark in 22 starts with a 6.02 ERA. He has given up 189 hits in 131.2 innings, struck out 83 and issued 62 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .341 batting average against him.

"If there was a stat for 'team shutout,' this would be it," Westing said later. "My catcher called a great game, guys delivered at the plate and when I messed something up the guys behind me were where they needed to be."

In 21 starts this season Westing has fashioned a 11-5 record and a 3.88 ERA.

29 July 2298 - County Crossing Slaps 6-5 Loss on Party Boys

County Crossing right-hander Boss Gentleman pitched his team to victory over the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. The final score was 6-5. Gentleman went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 8 hits, walked 2, and struck out 1. His record improves to 2-3. The Bloodbugs now own a record of 34-47.

County Crossing used the bat of Slim Chembaker to capture the win. The shortstop jacked a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Bloodbugs ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a dandy.

"We had the game right there for the taking," said Nordhagen Beach manager Craig Robinson. "But we decided not to take it."

29 July 2298 - Chemists Roll Over Silver Shroud, 16-4

The Sunshine Tidings Chemists topped the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud, 16-4, with right fielder Brightsun Ramos playing a big role. Ramos was 2 for 3 with 2 singles and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 2 for the Chemists in the win. The Chemists sport a record of 33-48.

The Chemists grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth. With no one out, Josh Noob hit a grand slam home run off All Day Acosta, putting Sunshine Tidings in front, 10-3. For Noob, it was his 1st home run of the season.

July 2298 - News and Notes - July 30

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

30 July 2298 - Is Squatty O'Sullivan Dead Man Walking?

Speculation out of Roxbury is that manager Squatty O'Sullivan is entering perhaps his last month with the Knuckle Punchers, if he makes it that far.

Reports are that owner Arlen Glass is fed up with the team's performance, currently 23-58 entering Saturday's game. There are 27 more games, including today's game at Egret. Glass did not travel with the team and has not appeared at a road game since the Knuckle Punchers completed being swept at Diamond City on June 26.

O'Sullivan was one of the few full-time managers in the inaugural season in 2296 when the team finished a league-worst 18-42. That year does not count in coaches' records, however, since most teams did not employ full coaching staffs that year. Last season, as an official member of the Coaches Association, O'Sullivan guided the Punchers to a 30-30 record, good enough for third place in the Railroad League.

This year, the team has been mostly inept throughout the lineup, currently 12th in both runs scored and allowed in the South Charles Association. Roxbury could be eliminated from playoff contention as early as next weekend, a month before the end of the season.

Glass was not available for a comment and neither O'Sullivan nor GM Kyle Wolf would comment on the situation.

When asked about the potential firing, O'Sullivan said, "I got nothing to say about that. We're going to try to win a ball game today. Period."

30 July 2298 - Greenzone Hits 2 home runs as Adamantium Win 7th Straight

No one was more impactful than Po Greenzone in the 6-3 Abernathy win over Lexington. Greenzone, who is on pace for 87 RBI this season, was 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 5 RBI and scoring twice. The first-place Adamantium have won 7 consecutive games.

Abernathy took the lead in the top of the sixth when Greenzone hit a grand slam home run. His 19th home run of the season made the score 4-3, Abernathy. Greenzone led the CBO in home runs in 2296 but was designated to the bench for the 2297 season for reasons he will not talk about.

"I'm just happy to help the team win," Greenzone told the Abernathy Herald. "I also want people to know that 2296 was no fluke."

30 July 2298 - Dimes Now 9-8 After Subduing Chemists

Fort Hagen starter Joey Dimes pitched well against the Sunshine Tidings Chemists at ArcJet Systems Stadium. The right-hander led his team to a win, 6-1. With the win, Fort Hagen raised its record to 46-36.

In his 98-pitch effort, Dimes allowed 1 run on 5 hits over 9 innings. He walked 0 and struck out 4.

"Winning never gets dull," said Dimes.

Ben Pawlak's two-run home run, his ninth, in the 2nd inning gave the Shroud a 2-0 lead. They never fell behind in the game.

Frank Corsica provided the Chemists' only extra-base hit, a double in the 9th inning. He also drove in his team's only run on an RBI groundout in the 6th.

30 July 2298 - Party Boys Win, 7-1, Versus Bloodbugs

The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys topped the County Crossing Bloodbugs, 7-1, in North Charles Association action at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. The game was highlighted by the performance of Nordhagen Beach pitcher Chet Arthur. With the win, Nordhagen Beach pushed its record to 52-30.

In 7.1 innings, Arthur (8-9) allowed one unearned run on five hits with eight strikeouts. His ERA dropped to 3.32 on the season, 6th best in the NCA.

Jon Hitman came through for Nordhagen Beach with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. The third baseman was a perfect 3 for 3 in the game, including 1 home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 runs and collected 1 run batted in.

"Like I've always said, I'm the straw that stirs the drink," Hitman said (again).

30 July 2298 - T-51s Rally in 8th for Win

The Oberland T-51s got a strong performance from pitcher Matt Udder, who stymied the Diamond City offense en route to a win, 3-2, at Graygarden Park. Oberland has an impressive 59-23 record.

The lead changed in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Oberland first baseman Curtis Slingshot hit his 20th home run of the year. Mike Pond threw the fateful pitch. Just like that, the T-51s were in front, 3-2.

Diamond City manager Bucky Bachelor said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.

30 July 2298 - Late Run Propels Mirelurks, 4-3

Warwick Mirelurks starter Jerry Weisman was in fine form against the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets at The Homestead, leading his team to a win, 4-3. Weisman picked up the win for Warwick, going 8 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 9-6. The current losing streak for Jamaica Plain has reached 6 games.

Jonathan Sapplicker's at-bat in the bottom of the sixth inning was a big one for Warwick. Coming to bat with two out, runners on 1st and 2nd and Warwick trailing 3-2, the shortstop hit a run-scoring single.

The game-winning run came in the first at bat in the bottom of the eighth when Melon Sanderson hit a solo shot off Red Rockets starter Will Rope (8-4).

"Sometimes, you can be too aggressive," said Jamaica Plain manager Mark Sellsword. "You need to let the game come to you."

July 2298 - News and Notes - July 31

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

31 July 2298 - CBO News: Trade Deadline

For Commonwealth Baseball Organization officials, the trading deadline is a nightmare. The nerve center of the league will be abuzz with last-minute deals -- some obscure, some shocking both in size and scope. Normal trades are allowed again once the playoffs are over and the offseason begins.

We will report any late-night trades in Monday's edition of Publick Occurences. However, if there are any trades during the day or during games, we will report on those in this edition.

31 July 2298 - Finch Farm Signs Three, Removes Them from Unrestricted Pool

The Finch Farm Four Leafs signed three players to minor league deals to remove them from the unrestricted pool for the 2299 season. The three players are now bound by rights to the CBO due to an agreement that the CBO is working out with officials for the upcoming Nuka World Baseball League.

Signed to contracts are 2B Manuel Tellez, C Beer Harku, and 2B Kurt Pool. All three players will join the Galleria Robotics Experts in the Dark Hollow Pond League of the Boston Minor Union. The Experts are currently in first place in that league at 36-22, two games ahead of Greentop Nursery.

31 July 2298 - Ranger Holds Cats Scoreless

The Quincy Gunners shut out the Atom Cats 12-0 today behind the strong pitching of Matt Ranger. Ranger surrendered only 5 hits in recording the complete-game victory, and struck out 5.

Following the last out, Ranger appeared to celebrate a little too boisterously for Atom manager Ben Stoudt, who could be seen scolding the famously outspoken right-hander as the clubs left the field. Ranger's own manager then intervened with some words for his counterpart.

The Cats skipper would not comment on the exchange, but at the Gunners press conference, Ranger confirmed that it was regarding the celebration.

"He basically told me I was being a lousy winner," Ranger said.

"And I told him he was being a lousy loser," Quincy manager Kevin Banner added.

Ranger has made 21 starts, tossed 129.2 innings, struck out 104 batters and walked 35. His record is 9-5 with a 5.00 ERA and he has limited other teams to a .275 batting average.

David Driftwood led the Gunners arsenal by going 2 for 4 with two home runs, two runs, and six RBI.

The Atom Cats' bigger news was the end of Ed Tarberry's 22-game hitting streak. The center fielder went 0-for-4 on the day.

"We felt if we could slow down Tarberry, we would win the game," Banner explained. "They really seemed to feed off his streak, so we tried to put more emphasis on shutting him down. It looks like it worked."

To date this season Tarberry is hitting .370 with 4 home runs.

31 July 2298 - Big Day for Inman in 7-5 Knuckle Punchers Win

The timely hitting of Grognak Inman helped the Roxbury Knuckle Punchers down the Egret Ninjas, 7-5. Inman went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 4 runs and scored once for the Knuckle Punchers. Tom Mannequin recorded the save. In save chances, he's now 13 for 17. The Knuckle Punchers raised their record to 24-59.

Inman had a game-changing home run in the top of the seventh. On a 0-1 fastball from Phlip Wallace, he banged a grand slam home run to left, giving the Knuckle Punchers a 7-3 lead. It was the 16th home run of the year for Inman.

"We played hard and won," said Inman. "Sometimes, baseball really is that easy."

31 July 2298 - Party Boys Shut Out Bloodbugs, 6-0

The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys picked up a win at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium, knocking off the County Crossing Bloodbugs, 6-0. Starting pitcher Julian Shed played a key role in the triumph. The Party Boys have an impressive 53-30 record.

Dustin Mart took Gavin Eviritts (4-10) deep in the bottom of the third. His solo home run put the Party Boys on top, 1-0. In all, Mart had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 3.

Mart said his team "played with focus."

Julian Shed (10-7) claimed the victory though he had a short outing due to throwing a lot of deep counts. He allowed no runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Accident John and Drama Miller pitched the final 2.2 innings.

31 July 2298 - Fort Hagen Gets 4-2 Win

Behind an impressive start by Derek Green, Fort Hagen beat Sunshine Tidings, 4-2. In 8 innings, Green (11-9) surrendered 6 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 3. He allowed 2 runs. Curtis Thriceshot earned his 28th save in 29 chances.

The Silver Shroud benefited from a costly error in the top of the fifth. With Jim Tiller at bat and Fort Hagen leading 2-1, the Sunshine Tidings miscue allowed Fort Hagen to plate 1 and take the lead, 3-1.

"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Fort Hagen skipper Mark Andersen.

The victory gives Fort Hagen a record of 47-36. With Abernathy's loss, they sit at two games back of the Adamantium, just like they started the weekend.

31 July 2298 - Hayjen Has Big Day in Dwellers Triumph

The home crowd had a good time watching the FHE Yao Guai and Vault 81 Dwellers get after it.

The Vault 81 Dwellers topped the FHE Yao Guai, 11-5, with center fielder Aesed Hayjen playing a big role. Hayjen went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and knocked in one for the Dwellers in the win. The Dwellers raised their record to 36-47.

With two out in the bottom of the third, Kevin Morrison barreled up a fastball from Sage Monticello (8-6). The result was a grand slam home run, putting the Dwellers in front, 7-1.

Morrison called the triumph "a good team win."

August 2298 - News and Notes - August 1

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 August 2298 - Oberland-Easy Town Trade: Shotgun for Alone

It is being reported in Easy Town that the Assaultrons and the Oberland T-51s have agreed on a trade. According to anonymous sources 30-year-old RF Travis Alone will be dealt to the T-51s in return for 18-year-old CF Dustin Shotgun, 18-year-old minor league RHP Dustin Haner, and a 5th round draft pick.

Shotgun is presently hitting at a .289 pace with no home runs and 4 RBIs. He has played in 48 games and scored 9 times.

For the season, Alone is hitting at a .343 clip with 4 home runs, 27 RBIs and has scored 27 runs. He has 74 hits, 7 walks and a .360 on-base percentage.

Reportedly, Oberland wanted a more mature presence on their team to handle any adversity they may face in the playoffs.

1 August 2298 - Hitman Wins NCA Player of the Week Prize

At the age of 30, Jon Hitman might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Nordhagen Beach third baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .500 batting average. For his efforts Hitman collected the North Charles Association Player of the Week Award.

He racked up 10 hits in 20 at-bats, 1 home run and 4 RBIs last week in 5 games.

So far this season Hitman has hit .342 with 4 home runs, 43 RBIs and scored 29 times.

1 August 2298 - Van Benschoten Red-Hot, SCA Player of the Week

It's always a thrill for fans of the team and students of the game alike when a superstar in the making shows what he's got. Chris Van Benschoten, the Vault 81 Dwellers 21-year-old left fielder, put himself in the spotlight last week making him the clear-cut choice for South Charles Association Player of the Week honors.

He ripped 13 hits in 21 at-bats, compiling a .619 average with 1 home run and 7 RBIs.

Van Benschoten's current batting average stands at .301 and he has chalked up 12 home runs and 44 RBIs.

1 August 2298 - BMU: Q on a Hot Streak, CA Player of the Week

His hard work and hustle paid off this week. The hard-working and hard-playing Ruben Q was rewarded with the Commonwealth Association Player of the Week honors.

The scrappy Mystic Pines Raybathers third baseman hit .538 while collecting 7 hits in 13 at-bats, 3 home runs and 7 RBIs.

Thus far this season Q has hit .420 with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs and scored 28 times. He is considered a contender for the CA MVP, but he has been called up to Starlight this weekend, meaning he may not get enough BMU at bats to qualify.

1 August 2298 - BMU: Week's Premier Player: Trinity Plaza's Hard

It was announced today that Trinity Plaza first baseman Dan "Rock" Hard has been acclaimed by the Massachusetts Association as the Player of the Week for his outstanding play last week.

Hard posted a .583 batting average as he collected 7 hits in 12 at-bats, 1 home run and 4 RBIs.

Presently Hard is batting .359 with 3 home runs and 9 RBIs. He has played in 10 games and scored 9 times.

1 August 2298 - CBO Players of the Month

NCA's #1 Batter Chosen: C.T. Woodard may be much younger than other hitters in the North Charles Association, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in July to win the Batter of the Month award.

The 19-year-old The Slog second baseman hit .459 with 5 home runs, 26 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

Thus far this year Woodard is hitting .358 with 15 home runs, 64 RBIs and 70 runs scored.

Hayes Takes Home SCA Top Batter Award: It's perhaps an award he'll win many more times through his career, as at age 18 Jumper Hayes has a lot of baseball ahead of him.

But for now the young Goodneighbor Hancocks star can enjoy the numbers he put up in July, which have garnered him the nod as the South Charles Association Batter of the Month.

His breakout month featured a .409 average with 5 home runs, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored.

Hayes currently has a .360 batting average with 127 hits, 10 homers, 67 RBIs, 73 runs scored and a .399 OBP.

Nordhagen Beach Starter Selected Best Pitcher: Last month's cream of the crop on the mound was Julian Shed of the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys. He captured the North Charles Association Pitcher of the Month award for his outstanding performance in July.

Shed started 6 games, threw 41.2 innings, yielded 29 hits and logged a 5-0 record. He put down 35 batters on strikes, walked 8 and compiled a 1.73 ERA. Opposing teams batted .190 against him.

Season-to-date Shed has rung up 10 wins and 7 losses in 21 appearances. He has an ERA of 2.90 and has fanned 108 batters in 145.2 innings.

Swatters Starter Wins SCA Pitching Award: When X10-44 Mannson takes the hill, chances are good for a Diamond City victory. At least that's the way it was in May.

He excelled with a 4-0 mark and 1.70 ERA in 6 starts, tossed 47.2 innings, fanned 44 and held others clubs to a .197 average.

That's why the Swatters star was honored today as the Pitcher of the Month by the South Charles Association.

To date this year in 21 starts, Mannson has crafted a 12-4 mark with a 3.51 ERA.

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 August 2298 - BMU Players of the Month

Fleeker Wins CA Batter of the Month: For a rookie just breaking in, Bubbles Fleeker certainly put together a successful month. It was good enough to win the CA Batter of the Month award for July.

The 21-year-old first baseman for the Outpost Zimonja Strongbacks hit .379 with 5 home runs, 17 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

This season Fleeker has 5 home runs and a .379 batting average.

Massachusetts Association Selects July's Best Batter: Jim Uglyhair has a lot going for him. The Natick Banks center fielder just broke into the majors this year and now the Massachusetts Association has just picked him as its top hitter for July.

In 14 games last month this outstanding rookie batted .278 with 6 home runs, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

For the year Uglyhair has hit .282 with 21 home runs, 62 RBIs and scored 52 runs.

Harding Acclaimed Top Pitcher in July: Daniel Harding has made fans throughout Boston Minor Union take notice over the past month with an exceptional 3-0 record. No pitcher in the Commonwealth Association threw better in July, garnering him the Pitcher of the Month award today.

In 4 starts Harding compiled a 2.35 ERA, putting up a 3-0 record, striking out 24 and tossing 23 innings.

In 10 starts this season Harding has fashioned a 4-2 record and a 3.35 ERA.

Massachusetts Association Announces Best Starter: In July, Jason Pingleton tore through the Massachusetts Association like a seasoned veteran -- quite impressive for a player only 24 years old.

2298 Week 17 - The Week in Review, Part 1

Analysis

The top three remains intact with few big moves happening from week to week at this point in the season. With just 25 games remaining, some teams are on the verge of being out of playoff contention with Roxbury (24-59) appearing to be the first team on the way out. Oberland could clinch a playoff spot this week.

The BL's The Slog and the IL's Abernathy have been the two hottest teams in their last 10 at 8-2, while Jamaica Plain on a seven-game losing streak is the coldest at 1-9.

Realistically, we count 14 teams we think have a realistic shot of making the playoffs and 10 with no chance. We will mark those with 'PC' for playoff chance and 'NC' for no chance.

The View from the BMU

Today in the CBO

The View from the BMU

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

2 August 2298 – Mass Pike Interchange and Vault 95

On certain Tuesdays for the 2297 and 2298 seasons, we will feature one of the settlements where teams in the Boston Minor Union play.

In our twentieth trip around the BMU, we will do something a little different, cover two settlements. Why? This is the official announcement that the Mass Pike (Interchange) Robobrains will begin play outside Vault 95 in a unique ballpark in 2299.

Mass Pike Interchange - Where are the people?

Mass Pike Interchange "before the Great War was an interchange between two elevated freeways, one heading north-south and one east-west, located near Lake Cochituate west of Boston. By 2287, Mass Pike Interchange has become inhabited by the Gunners, who have established an outpost on the freeway's ruins.

"Sitting atop the western freeway, it consists of two roads: the freeway and the old highway. The old highway connects Mass Pike Tunnel west to the interchange and leads to the Nuka-World transit center at the west end of the highway. At the bottom and top of the freeway, the Sole Survivor will come across several Gunners. There are two elevators that can be used to reach the upper and lower sections of the freeway. The elevator to the lower freeway is located north of the interchange, while the second is located in the middle of the interchange, guarded by several Gunners."

Mass Pike Interchange - 2288

After the Minutemen and Brotherhood of Steel teamed up to eradicate or rehabilitate Gunners members, the areas west and south of Boston became much safer.

As a thoroughfare for the railine to Nuka World, Mass Pike Interchange became an important portion of the Commonwealth where the independent government deemed a guarded safe zone.

The settlement employs some civilians, but most of the people currently inhabiting Mass Pike Interchange (MPI) are made up of stationed Brotherhood of Steel soldiers. This makes Mass Pike Interchange the least populated settlement in the Boston-area Commonwealth with only 32 permanent citizens. When transportation was more difficult before Corvega's plant provided transport vehicles to the CBO teams and the BMU counterparts, the MPI was a crucial station. Therefore, a small area was fenced off so that BoS soldiers could enjoy baseball when not on active duty. Still, the MPI baseball team usually sees crowds of 100 or fewer people regularly, which is not as good for CBO profits.

Mass Pike Interchange - 2288

The CBO does a complete gate share, keeping all teams on an equal financial tier, so the lack of residents does not affect the Robobrains' parent team, Vault 81, but Nate Howard felt the time was right to relocate now that Vault 95 has built an indoor field, Glowing Sea Indoor Stadium, slated to be fully opened in early 2299.

Back to our subtitle, "Where are the people?" One thing that many notice is that there is no housing at MPI on the ground. In fact, other than the fenced off field and a few guard posts with bunks, people would not know more than about six people lived here at all.

The MPI is one of the few places around the Commonwealth where the entire settlement is off the ground. While the MPI cannot function as it did pre-War, it was once a Gunners outpost now controlled by the BoS. Therefore, the functioning freight lifts are the only way up and down the Pike. All housing, businesses, and activity are above the ground, making it a place generally safe from raiders and creatures of the wastes.

Vault 95 - A whole lotta shakin' going on

Like the MPI, Vault 95, located on the northeast edge of the Glowing Sea, was also once a Gunners outpost. It also has an interesting history in just how evil Vault-Tec was. According to a terminal entry, "Vault-Tec created Vault 95 as a rehabilitation institute for people who suffered from chem addiction. The residents of the vault would continue with the program for five years, after which a planted Vault-Tec agent would then unearth a pre-placed, hidden supply of chems to test the social and psychological reactions of the community.

Vault 95 Entrance

"As reflected in the Vault 95 terminal entries, the rehabilitation program was effective in managing the addiction of its residents, with decisions to maintain the program remaining unanimous throughout the vault's early years. Private logs reveal that the introduction of chems effectively tore apart the family that the residents had created for each other, with some residents caving almost immediately to their urges. This stash may be found as one descends the stairs into the residential area, heading straight to the bathrooms and then looking right. Despite the fate of the vault, the stash still contains moderate quantities of chems and alcohol.

"It is certain that all of the vault's original inhabitants overdosed, were killed during in-fighting or fled well before the Gunners moved in; multiple bodies may be found in and around the stash. In the bedroom slightly to the right of the stash are two bodies splayed out across the furniture. They are surrounded by what appears to be a civilized tea party, complete with mannequin attendees, Psycho, and Jet. In one of the closed stalls in the bathroom to the left of the stash is a skeleton and Psycho. Opposite [a] room . . . a skeleton may be found slumped against the foot of a bed, Psycho at his feet and two Jet on an upturned wastebasket next to him.

Vault 95 Blueprints

"Judging from the otherwise homely and untouched nature of the rooms in that area, it seems probable the residents instantly capitulated to their addictions, shut themselves into their rooms, and resumed their chem abuse. It also appears the Vault-Tec agent did not survive the ensuing violence."

Nate first went to Vault 95 with Irish Cait. They had to clear out the place to help Cait with her own addictions. Then, she used the detox chair there, a contraption that can instantly cure anyone of a chem addiction.

Vault 95 Detox Room - Cait used this chair with success

That leads us back to Vault-Tec. We have not written much about them in recent years, but we at Publick Occurences have considered following a history of corporations/institutions that performed terrible experiments on people, most notably the information found in Vault-Tec facilities. Vault 95 contained a contraption that could instantly cure people of addictions, as in making them not want chems again, ever. Yet, instead of using that contraption on the chem-addicted and alcoholic residents of Vault 95, they instead released overdose levels of the stuff, basically dooming everyone inside to addiction. Evil. Simply evil.

Residents in Vault 95 now have worked on fixing up the place and removing as much Gunner graffiti as possible. The area near the Glowing Sea is still not optimal since the Glowing Sea will not reradiate for many more years. However, the ability to be inside for living and, by next year, baseball is something that helps Vault 95 to be a settlement that continues to grow in population and popularity.

Ashfire was 3 for 3 with 2 home runs and 2 walks, while scoring 4 runs and driving in 4 for the Cats. Picking up the win was Jesse Emacipated. He went 6.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits. In postgame comments to the University Point Daily News, Luttrell said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
