Game 33: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans

Make that a 6-game losing streak, as the Washington Senators (18-15) used a 3-run 7th inning to top the Boston Americans (17-16).

Ace pitcher Rube Waddell (7-2) was dialed in as he cruised to a 4-hit, 1 earned run outing, striking out 8 while walking 1 batter; Game Score 82. Noodles Hahn (5-3) was burdened with the loss after he allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, striking out 6 in 8 innings of play; Game Score 74. Jose Ramos covered the final inning in which he allowed 1 unearned run on 1 hit and 1 walk.

While this was a solid pitchers duel, there were a few noteworthy hitting performances, including Washington's Willie Keeler (2 for 4, 2 Runs) and Pat Hynes (1 for 1, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs), and Boston's Danny Shay (2 for 3) and Frank Chance (1 for 4, RBI).

Game 34: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans

Not pretty -- the losing streak continues! In the latest loss, the Boston Americans (17-17) fell to the Washington Senators (19-15) by a 6 to 2 score. This was a disappointing outcome for the 7,070 fans in attendance.

Senators pitcher Jack Chesbro (5-2) picked up the victory after limiting the opposition to 2 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 2 in his 130 pitch outing; Game Score 69. The woes of Johnny Lush continue, as the rookie struggled with his control and allowed 6 earned runs on 10 hits, 4 walks, 2 hit batsmen, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 47.

The Senators had several fine hitting performances, including Danny Green (2 for 5, Homerun, Run, RBI, Stolen Base), Doc Casey (2 for 5 Double, 2 RBIs), and Danny Hoffman (1 for 3, Run, 2 Walks, Stolen Base). The Americans limited offense was generated by Jesse Hoffmeister (1 for 3, Double, Run), John Farrell (1 for 3, Double, RBI), and Frank Chance (1 for 4, Run, Stolen Base).

Game 35: Washington Senators vs. Boston Americans

A much needed win for the home team, as the Boston Americans (18-17) snapped a 7-game losing streak to top the visiting Washington Senators (19-16) by a 7 to 2 score.

Jesse Tannehill (3-5) picked up the win by limiting the opposition to 2 runs (1 earned) on 7 hits and 1 walk, striking out 5 in his 120-pitch victory; Game Score 71. Carl Lundgren (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits, 4 walks, and 1 wild pitch in 7 innings of play; Game Score 39. Frank Kitson provided 1 inning of relief in which he allowed 1 unearned run.

The Boston hitting-attack was powered by Frank Chance (3 for 5, Triple, 2 RBI's, Stolen Base), Chick Stahl (2 for 3, Triple, 2 Runs), and Danny Shay (2 for 5, Double, 3 Runs, RBI). Washington's offense was limited to Doc Casey (2 for 4, Double, RBI) and Danny Hoffman (1 for 3, Run, Stolen Base).

Game 36: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps

The late-inning collapse is becoming all too common for the Americans, as they fell to the Cleveland Naps (16-20) by a score of 5 to 4. What was frustrating about this one was the fact that Leever quickly got the first 2 outs then the wheels came off. With the latest loss, Boston (18-18) dropped in the American League Standings to the 3rd place spot (tied with the St. Louis Browns).

Watty Lee (5-3) picked up the win by limiting the opposition to 4 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits, 3 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 59. Sam Leever (4-4) was tagged with the loss after serving up 5 earned runs on 11 hits and 2 walks in 8 2/3 innings of play; Game Score 43.

The Naps hitting-attack was powered by Lee DeMontreville (1 for 2, Double, Run, RBI), Joe Sugden (3 for 4, Run), and Doc Gessler (2 for 3, 2 RBIs, 2 Walks). Frank Chance (3 for 5, Triple), John Farrell (1 for 4, Double, 3 RBIs), and Bill Lange (1 for 1, Run, 2 Walks) played well in the loss.

Off to the best start in his storied career, Cleveland Naps infielder Ed Delahanty is pounding the ball right now. In picking up his 7th career American League Player of the Week award, Delahanty batted .538 (14 for 26) with 3 Doubles, 1 Triple, 5 Runs, 4 RBIs, and 4 Walks for a slash line of .538/.613/.731 that resulted in 0.5 WAR.

National League Player of the Week

While there have been some grumblings from the St. Louis fans that Joe McGinnity has lost something on his pitches, the veteran pitcher put together a fine week of pitching. In taking home his 1st National League Player of the Week award, McGinnity posted a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA, an opposition batting average of just .055, and a 0.28 WHIP on the week.

Power Rankings

The latest Power Rankings are out and the Cincinnati Reds (22-14) are leading the way. Close behind are the Detroit Tigers (21-15), Brooklyn Superbas (21-15), Pittsburg Pirates (20-16), and Philadelphia Athletics (19-17). The Boston Americans (18-18) have fallen to the 11th spot due to their extended losing streak. The Chicago Cubs (15-21) sit in last place.

Game 37: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps

This had all the makings of another late-inning implosion. Yet despite an 8th inning rally, the Boston American's (19-18) held off the Cleveland Naps (16-21) to take the game by a 3 to 2 score. The Americans remains 2 games out of the top spot in the American League standings.

Boston ace Noodles Hahn (6-3) picked up the win, as he limited the Naps to 2 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and 1 walk, striking out 3 in the 141 pitch complete game victory; Game Score 71. Jake Weimer (2-8) was tagged with the loss despite an overall solid performance in which he permitted 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits, 5 walks, 1 hit batsman; Game Score 72. Despite the rough season he is having, Weimer is still on my watch-list as a future trade opportunity.

Boston's limited offense was generated by Frank Chance (1 for 4, Double, Run, RBI, 2 Stolen Bases) and Danny Shay (1 for 2, Run, Walk). The Naps were led by Harry Lumley (2 for 4) and Tom Parrott (1 for 1, Run).

Game 38: Boston Americans vs. Cleveland Naps

Really not sure what to make of Lush's struggles as of late, as his rookie season has not gone as well as I had hoped. In today's loss, the Cleveland Naps (17-21) beat up on the Boston Americans (19-19) by a score of 10 to 3. The loss drops the Americans back to 4th place in the American League standings.

Picking up the win was Bill "Wild Bill" Donovan (5-4) who limited the opposition to 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks; Game Score 63. Johnny Lush (5-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing a season high 9 earned runs on 8 hits, 5 walks, 1 hit batsman, and 1 balk in 5 1/3 innings of play; Game Score 13. Gus Thompson covered the final 2 2/3 innings in which he allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits and 1 walk.

Cleveland's offense had no trouble putting the ball in play, led by Bill Donovan (2 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs, 3 RBIs), Jimmy Sheckard (2 for 3, 2 Runs, 2 RBIs, 2 Walks, 2 Stolen Bases), and Watty Lee (1 for 2, Double, 2 Runs, RBI, Walk). Bill Lange (1 for 3, Triple, 2 RBIs, Walk) and Johnny Lush (1 for 2, RBI) hit the ball well in the loss.

All-Star Fan Voting -- National League

Cincinnati Reds infielder Nap Lajoie is no stranger to baseball accolades, so it should not be a surprise to find the superstar leading the National League in fan voting after the first tally.

Game 39: Boston Americans vs. New York Highlanders

A big win for the visiting Boston Americans (20-19) as they thumped the New York Highlanders (18-21) by a score of 11 to 3. The victory moves the Americans into 3rd place in the American League standings.

Picking up the win was Jesse "Powder" Tannehill (4-5), as he limited the Highlanders to 3 earned runs on 10 hits, 2 walks, and 1 wild pitch in his 140-pitch complete game effort; Game Score 55. After a rough start to the season, Tannehill has posted victories in 3 of his last 4 outings. Barney Wolfe (2-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing 9 runs (4 earned) on 14 hits, 5 walks, a wild pitch, and a hit batsman in 7 1/3 innings of play; Game Score 23. Zeke Wilson covered the final 1 2/3 innings in which he served up 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks.

Both teams pounded out the hits today, with Fred Clarke (3 for 6, Double, Run, RBI), John Farrell (2 for 5, 3 RBIs, Walk), and Dave Brain (2 for 6, 3 Runs, RBI, Stolen Base) leading the way for the Americans, while Fred Odwell (3 for 4, Double, Triple, Run), Barry McCormick (2 for 4, Run, RBI), and Jimmy Collins (2 for 5, RBI) paced the way for New York.

Game 40: Boston Americans vs. New York Highlanders

Well so much for putting together a winning streak, as the New York Highlanders (19-21) throttled the Boston Americans (20-20) by a 9 to 3 score. Having a .500 record 40 games into the season is not how I saw this playing out.

Highlanders pitcher Wiley Piatt (4-5) limited the visitors to 3 earned runs on 8 hits, 3 walks, and 1 hit batsman; Game Score 57. On the other side of the ledger, Sam Leever (4-5) was tagged with the loss after he served up 7 earned runs on 13 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings of play; Game Score 16. Gus Thompson covered the final 2 innings in which he allowed 2 earned runs on 3 hits.

The New York batters were dialed in today, led by Jimmy Bannon (3 for 5, Double, Triple, Homerun, 2 Runs, 3 RBIs, Stolen Base), Wiley Piatt (4 for 4, Double, 2 Runs), Jesse Burkett (2 for 5m 2 Runs, RBI), and Harry Davis (1 for 4, Homerun, Run, 2 RBIs, Walk). The Americans' offense was powered by Bill Lange (3 for 4, Triple, Run, 2 RBIs), Fred Clarke (1 for 2, Run, Walk, Hit-by-Pitch), and Homer Smoot (2 for 4).

Game 41: Boston Americans vs. New York Highlanders

A match-up of two of the games best pitchers, led to a close game in which the Boston Americans (21-20) topped the New York Highlanders (19-22) by a score of 4 to 1. The win keeps the Americans in a 3-way tie for 3rd place in the American League standings.

A solid pitching outing from Noodles Hahn (7-3) in which the southpaw limited the home team to 1 earned run on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 78. On the other side of the box score, Christy Mathewson (7-6) was saddled with the loss after permitting 4 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, 4 walks, and 1 wild pitch; Game Score 59.

Boston's offense was generated by Solly Hofman (2 for 4, Double, Run, Stolen Base), Bill Lange (2 for 3, Run, Walk), and John Farrell (2 for 4, 2 RBIs, Stolen Base). New York's limited offense came from Lave Cross (2 for 4) and Roy Thomas (1 for 3, Run, Walk).

Game 42: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans

The team just cannot catch a break. One day they win and things look good, and the next day they cannot scratch out much offense in a demoralizing loss. Here, the Detroit Tigers (23-19) topped the Boston Americans (21-21) in an extra-innings affair by a score of 2 to 1.

Doc White (6-5) was the winning pitcher today, as he limited Boston to 1 earned run on 6 hits, 2 walks, 1 wild pitch, and 1 hit batsman in the 11 inning, 123 pitch effort; Game Score 82. Johnny Lush (5-6) was burdened with the loss, despite allowing just 2 runs (0 earned) on 6 hits, 4 walks, 3 hit batsmen, 1 wild pitch, and 1 balk; Game Score 83.

Offense was limited today, but Charlie Hickman (2 for 4, Double, Triple, RBI) played well in the win, while Bill Lange (2 for 4, Double, RBI) had a solid effort in the loss.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Deacon Phillipe was dialed in last week, as the veteran pitcher posted a 2-0 record with a 0.00 ERA which was good enough for him to earn his 1st National League Player of the Week award. Since moving over to the Cardinals during a mid-season 1903 trade, Phillippe has recorded a 19-5 record with a 1.67 ERA in 26 games.

Game 43: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans

On a day with clear skies and an inviting 64 degree temperature, an outstanding pitching performance by Jesse Tannehill provided the Boston Americans (22-21) with a 2 to 0 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers (23-20).

Jesse Tannehill (5-5) picked up the complete game, shutout victory by scattering 5 hits and 2 walks in his 109-pitch effort; Game Score 77. Doc White (6-6) was tagged with the loss after permitting 2 earned runs on 6 hits; Game Score 64.

Game 44: Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Americans

Despite getting behind early, the Boston Americans (23-21) prevailed over the Detroit Tigers (23-21) by a 6 to 5 score. Boston remains in a 2nd-place tie; 1 game out of the top spot in the American League standings.

While rumors continue to swirl that he is being shopped around, Sam Leever (5-5) picked up the win despite allowing 5 earned runs on 12 hits and 2 walks; Game Score 43. Nixey Callahan's (6-4) solid outing was wasted as he permitted 6 runs (3 earned) on 8 hits, 1 wild pitch, and 1 balk; Game Score 52.

There were several fine hitting performances today with Dave Brain (2 for 4, Triple, Run, RBI, Stolen Base), Bill Lange (1 for 4, Triple, 2 Runs), and Chick Stahl (1 for 4, 2 RBIs) playing well for the Americans, while Freddy Parent (2 for 4, Double, Run, RBI, Stolen Base), Jim Delahanty (2 for 5, Triple, Run, RBI), and Nixey Callahan (2 for 3, Double, Walk) hit the ball well in the loss.
