So I watch in mild surprise as the Mets rally (twice!), take their first lead in a week and actually win a game. Thus perhaps justifying Gary Cohen's "stripped to the studs" sneering at Washington. (Psst, Gary…they still scored SEVEN runs off of our "great" pitching.)

Then I turn off rather than watch Game 2. since I don't watch Rob Manfred's 7-inning bullsh*t. (I also don't watch "extra-inning" games with pop-up baserunners. Off after 9, alas. [I used to LOOOOVE "free baseball". Because, duh…FREE BASEBALL!])

So I'm a little annoyed that a 3-game series has shrunk to 2 games (for me), but I'm ready for today's game. Except I just learned that Game 2 got rained out, we have TWO nonsense Little League games, and so I only get to see one game with the Gnats. Grrr…

See you tomorrow, Dodgers. Sigh.

I see, we have different criteria here. I watch whatever beisbol I can get. At least until they start to ramp up fan "involvement" to the next level. How about this - on borderline calls, the fans can decide via their dumbphones whether it was a homer or a wallbanger!

Oh well. Even if they hold of the Gnats today, two weeks with the Dodgers and Giants is nothing that this team can even remotely survive.

PEEETE secures the sweep of the Gnats, and the Mets win three straight for the first time since June(!).

Phillies 60-55
Metsies 59-55
Barves 59-56

However, I'd be stunned if they were still above .500 two weeks from now, with 13 straight games against LA and SF. The Dodgers and Giants look two sizes too big for this team.

You mean Mr Wheels, stolen base king? I love Pete even if he just turns out to be Boog Powell.

Hard to complain about a sweep, no matter how ugly... I expect the starters to get bombed by the Chavez Ravine Vandals but if they can stay in games long enough to get the bullpen clown car driving in they'll have a chance.

Edwin Diaz in to pitch the top of the 9th in a tie game.
Walks the leadoff hitter, ex-Met McKinney.
Gets a bunted pop up for an out from Austin Barnes.
Balks the baserunner to 2nd.
K's Trea Turner.
How will it end?
OMG! He struck out Muncy, I was thinking that Muncy would take him deep on the 0-2 count LOL.
Now I'm hoping Rojas doesn't dare to send him out for another inning.

Well, I see that big comeback was all for nothing. (I don't watch Manfred's garbage "extra innings", you may recall.)

Naturally this happens after Gary Cohen spent all game taunting the Dodgers about their crappy record in extra innings. You might want to cool the bragging, Gar. We're 59-56, FFS.

Robot Rojas, Boy Blunder, sat Dom Smith because a lefty was pitching. Never mind that Dom is hitting .340 against lefties. The idiot's excuse? "Well, we're playing a lot of games and I wanted to give him a day off sometime." Then sit him against a RIGHTY, moron. Dom's hitting .223 against them.

Of course, this left Dom free for pinch-hitting duty. He struck out, and is now 0-for-6 as a pinch-hitter. Not that Rojas had any idea, I'm sure.

(OT, but if somebody wants to beat Dr. Dave Chokshi's smug ass, I'm willing to donate to the legal defense fund. So sick of those ads.)

If there's one thing more fun than back to back extra inning losses, and that's giving up two touchdowns and needing to pitch two position players!

I say we keep "Reed, J." and "Pillar" in the pen, and the others can go into the dumpster.

Funny thing: MLB.com says the Giants have "19 straight against playoff contenders".

They count the Mets as playoff contenders.

Dead team. Completely and utterly dead team walking. It'll be a miracle if they're still over .500 after this stretch.

Jake Reed was the second player in as many weeks that I had no recollection of before I saw him on the field or in a box score. Hartlieb? I think that's the other one. Not only can't you tell the players without a scorecard, you can barely tell them with one!

Maybe some of these scrap heap guys will turn into something, at least more cannon fodder (the Italian expression is more accurate, carne da cannone= cannon meat) for next year.

What a giant f*cking pile of sh*t.

Great moments in MetsCasting [ESPn edition]: Matty Vaz, getting the Boy Blunder's excuses in early, says "you run out of buttons to push when you don't have the personnel".

ESPn obligingly puts up a graphic of the teams who have the most players on the DL: Yankees, Rays, Mets, Dodgers, Padres. Huh. I guess Boone and Cash and Roberts and Tingler haven't run out of buttons to push, the way the Rojas-bot has. Poor Little Bot! Life is so unfair!

(Also, our best month was May [17-9] when 5/8 of our lineup was out of action. Just Dom, the catchers, and Frankie "$341,000,000 Down the Toilet" Lindor healthy. Billy McKinney for MVP, I guess.)

Early report from SF: Rojas the Robot sends out the exact same lineup as last night. You know, the lineup that went 0-for-10 w/RiSP.

This features Michael Conforto in #2 hole. Now, Conforto's had a couple of good weeks, but part of the rationale last night was that Michael lights up Max Scherzer, specifically.

In case the Rojas-bot missed it, Kevin Gausman ≠ Max Scherzer. Just so he knows.

I thought they might be going something remotely respectable like 4-9 during their Dodgers/Giants spree.

But they're now 0-4 and getting bluer in the face.

Westheim, he failed in football, so he's probably headed back to the Mets.

But they allowed fewer than two touchdowns!

Last night was an opportunity as both Gausman and Rogers were definitely not their usual selves. If they can keep games close I have faith Pete will be able to hit one to Oakland of Jake McGee... if his pitches go over the plate.

He did graduate with a degree in 2009. I do not know what it is in, and I doubt he has ever had to use it. But he did in fact graduate.

"Well, another fun-filled evening." —Jenny Calendar, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Welcome to sub-.500ville, kids! It will actually be an accomplishment if we manage to win 1 of the next 3 and reach the magic 60-62 mark.

(And, beautiful memories of 2016 aside, I've heard that 60-62 doesn't actually guarantee a 27-13 closing run. No Cabrera bat-flip with the extra inning walk--off, no Granderson switch-hitting HRs in extra innings…after all, we don't play extra innings any longer. Thanks, Manfred!)
