MLB news: Sept. 21 -- Nationals sew up first playoff berth since 2019

With a 2-0 win over the New York Mets, the Washington Nationals have assured themselves their first playoff berth since 2019, a year they won their only World Series championship by defeating the Houston Astros.
At 88-62, the Nationals lead the Mets by 3.5 games in the National League East Division with 12 games remaining.
Washington owns the second-best record in the NL, but sit six games behind the NL West leading Los Angeles Dodgers in the chase for the top seed in the playoffs.

MLB news: Sept. 23 -- Dodgers are champions of the west

With a 54 win over the Miami Marlins, the Los Angeles Dodgers have clinched their fifth straight National League West Division title.
The Dodgers (95-56) lead the second-place Arizona Diamondbacks by 12 games with 11 left in the regular season.
L.A. owns a six-game edge in the race for the top seed in the NL playoffs over NL-East leader Washington.
This will be the 14th consecutive playoff appearance for the Dodgers.
They last reached the World Series in 2020, when they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays.

With a 9-8 win over the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox have clinched their first trip to the postseason since 2021.
Boston (89-63) owns an eight-game advantage over both the Rays and Baltimore Orioles in the American League East Division with 10 games left in the regular season.
The Red Sox sit one game in front of the Minnesota Twins for the best overall record in the AL.
Boston last reached the World Series in 2018, when it defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers.

MLB news: Sept. 24 -- Mets clinch second straight postseason berth

By defeating the Washington Nationals 3-2, the New York Mets assured themselves at least a wild-card berth in the upcoming National League playoffs.
It will be the second straight postseason appearance for the Mets.
With a 86-67 record, New York sits in second place in the National League East Division 3.5 games behind the first-place Washington Nationals with nine games left in the season.
The Mets last reached the World Series in 2015, losing to the Kansas City Royals.
New York's last World Series title came in 1986,when it defeated the Boston Red Sox

With a 13-6 win over the Cleveland Indians, the Minnesota Twins have clinched at least a wild-card berth in the American League playoffs.
At 89-64, the Twins own a four-game lead over the Detroit Tigers with nine games left in the season.
Minnesota is tied with the Boston Red Sox for the best record in the American League.
This will be the fifth straight trip to the playoffs for the Twins, who have made it seven of the past eight seasons.
Minnesota last made the World Series in 1991, when it defeated the Atlanta Braves in seven games.

MLB news: Sept. 26 -- D'backs clinch NL wild-card berth

The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached the National League postseason field as a wild card despite falling 6-4 to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sept. 25.
The D'backs sit at 85-69 in second place, some 12 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the NL West.
It is the second straight wild-card berth for Arizona.
The D'backs last reached the World Series in 2023, when they lost to the Texas Rangers.
Their lone World Series championship came in 2001 when they defeated th New York Yankees in seven games.

Following a 19-9 rout of the Miami Marlins, the Atlanta Braves are assured of being part of the National League postseason as they have clinched a wild-card berth.
Although, they sit in third place in the National League East Division at 85-72, some 6.5 games in back of the Washington Nationals, the Braves know they will be at least the No. 3 wild card in the NL.
It will be the ninth consecutive season of playoff baseball for the Braves.
They last reached the World Series in 2021, when they defeated the Houston Astros.

MLB news: Sept. 30 -- Orioles clinch wild-card berth

The Baltimore Orioles are back in the playoff after they clinched a wild-card berth with a 10-7 win over the New York Yankees.
At 86-71, Baltimore is tied atop the wild-card standings with the Detroit Tigers. The Tampa Bay Rays are two games in back of them.
The Orioles trail the American-League East Division champions by 6.5 games with five games left on their schedule.
The playoff berth is Baltimore's first since it advanced in 2023 and 24.
The Orioles have not been to the World Series since 1983, when they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Baltimore's last World Series title was in 1966, when it swept the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Detroit Tigers will be in the American League playoffs for the first time since 2014 following a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Tigers also remain in contention for the AL Central Division title, as they trail the first-place Minnesota Twins by three games with five contests left on the schedule.
With identical 86-71 record, the Tigers and Orioles are tied for the No. 1 seed in the AL wild-card race.
Detroit last made the World Series in 2012, when it lost to the San Francisco Giants.
The Tigers last won the World Series in 1984, when they defeated the San Diego Padres.
