Cards news: July 23 -- Trade sends RHP Anthony Bender to Tampa Bay for pitching prospect
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired minor-league right-handed pitcher Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Anthony Bender.
Lunsford-Shenkman, 24, has pitched as a reliever in the rookie league this season for the Rays. In 10 games, he has gone 2-2 with one save and a 3.38 ERA. Acquired by the Cardinals mid-way through the 2025 season, Bender enjoyed success for a season and a half before bottoming out this season. Bender went 4-7 with 30 saves with a 2.37 in 71 games after coming to St. Louis. Penciled to be the team's closer this season, a job he quickly lost, Bender struggled. In 39 games, he is 1-4 with five saves, four blown saves and a 5.40 ERA. The 32-year-old's status as a free agent at season's end also played into the deal. |

Cards news: July 30 -- LHP Tanner Scott goes to Washington for minor-league infielder.
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired 24-year-old minor league infielder Randal Diaz from the Washington Nationals in exchange for left-handed relief pitcher Tanner Scott.
Acquired in the fifth round of the 2024 draft by the Nationals, Diaz has spent time this season between Class A Freemont and AA Harrisburg. In those 36 games, he has hit .222 with three home runs and nine RBIs. The Cardinals acquired Scott, 33, prior to the 2026 season. That year went fine, as in 56 games he went 5-5 with three saves and a 3.88 ERA. The 2027 season, however, has been a different story. The veteran has pitched in 42 games going 3-4 with two saves, five blown saves and a 5.58 ERA. |

Cards news: July 31 -- LHP John King goes to Colorado in three-player deal
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired 23-year-old relief pitcher Gage Wood from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for left-handed reliever John King and minor-league season baseman Jayden Davis.
Wood has spent the 2027 season between three levels (rookie, A and High-A) and in overall has pitched in 27 games. In those contests, he has gone 0-8 with nine saves and a 8.03 ERA. Wood has been assigned to high-A Peoria. The 32-year-old King was in his third season with St. Louis. A left-handed specialist, King has struggled this season. In 36 games, he is 2-1 with one save and a 4.45 ERA. Overall, he has pitched in 192 games for the Cardinals going 8-6 with three saves and a 2.89 ERA. The 23-year-old Davis has spent this season at Class A Palm Beach and has hit .302 with three home runs and 26 RBIs in 48 games/47 starts. |

Cards news: July 31 -- IF/OF Donovan and RHP Bednar go to Detroit in four-player deal
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired minor-league right-handed pitcher Carter Holton and infielder Hao-Yu Lee in exchange for infielder-outfielder Brendan Donovan and closer David Bednar.
The left-handed Holton has spent this season with the Tigers' rookie league team where in 10 starts he has gone 3-1 with a 3.09 ERA. He was originally drafted by Atlanta in the second round of the 2024 draft before later being traded to Detroit. In 44 career minor-league starts, he is 9-15 with a 3.33 ERA. The 24-year-old Lee has split this season between AA Erie and AAA Toledo. In 68 games/66 starts, he has hit .254 with 11 home runs and 48 RBIs. Lee has played in 598/588 minor league games since 2021, during which he has hit .286 with 22 home runs and 84 RBIs. At 47-67, the Cardinals are undoubtedly out of contention for a playoff spot so the trades of Donovan and Bednar both made sense since both will be free agents at season's end. Breaking into the majors in 2022, Donovan, 30, has had a nice career with the Cardinals. In 689 games, 631 starts, he has hit .268 with 57 home runs and 288 RBIs and a .753 OPS. The 2027 season has not been his best as he's checked in at .236 with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 73 games/70 starts. St. Louis acquired Bednar before the bottom fell out on its playoff chances. He pitched well in his limited time, going 1-1 with seven saves and a 1.00 ERA in 18 games. |
