Some last Irish HW's....for now anyway....
First a couple last T'cans...
Bob Johnston 0 wins / 1 loss / 1 draw / 0 KO Hometown: Belfast, Northern Ireland Rating by: Rocco Del SEsto Lost by 4th round TKO to Obe Hepburn in April 1969. Turned up in the ring again in December 1970 to fight to a draw in 6 rounds with Brian Hall. John Leitch 0 wins / 3 losses / 0 draws / 0 KO Hometown: Doagh, N.Ireland Birthplace: Antrim, N.Ireland Rating by: Rocco Del SEsto Lost all 3 fights by TKO in very early rounds, the last to Dave Garside. Then a guy with a short career but some decent opponents... John Lyttle 5 wins / 1 loss / 0 draws / 2 KO Hometown: Belfast, N.Ireland RAting by: Rocco Del Sesto BoxRec shows only 6 fights for Lyttle all in 1954. The first 5 were from January through April. He stopped Johnny Zedd(1-8-0,1 nobody to speak of) in 3rd round TKO, then won an 8 round decision over Hugh Ferns, and 8th round TKO over George Stern(18-10-0,9KO) a decent lefty from Scotland, and then won an 8 round decision over Wally Curtis. Less then two weeks after beating Curtis, in late April Lyttle then lost for the first time, an 8 round decision to Ron Harman. Then Lyttle doesn't fight until November of that year when he wins another 8 round decision, this one against a Dennis Lockton(2-17-0,0). After that, nothing else on Lyttle. Except for the bookends Zedd and Lockton, Lyttle took on with good results 4 fairly decent opponents. You wonder why the sudden exit or is there more to his career to be unearthed? |

Angel Cassano Rating 1 Argentina
Heavyweight 1948-54 32 wins / 8 losses / 6 draws / 27 KO Birthplace: Buenos Aires, Argentina Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Cassano exhibited a pretty good punch with the 27 KO's but also his chin would be suspect with 7 stoppages in his 8 losses. Cassano made a career building this nice looking record against the bottom of the barrel competition in mostly argentina. He fought a couple times in Peru, one fight loosing by 8th round TKO to a Sampson Powell(21-9-1,13KO), a middleweight from Cleveland, Ohio. His next fight after Sampson he did beat a Pilar Bastida(21-13-5,10KO) another middleweight, this fight in Uruguay. Those were the only two bouts against anyone of any kind of record until what turned out to be his last 3 career fights. In June 1953 he fought undefeated(24-0-1) Dogomar Martinez loosing a 12 round decision to Martinez. This one fight and his record then apparently earned him a shot at the Argentine HW Title in decemeber of that year against Reinaldo Ansaloni. That title had been vacated when Lovell was stripped of it. Cassano was no match for Ansaloni who KO'd him in the 4th round. Cassano climbed back into the ring one more time in Feb 1954 getting KO'd out in the 8th round in another fight with Dogomar Martinez. This guy is going to perform great to his record against the bottom of the barrel competition but not much anything else. Rocco |

Rodolfo Luciano Diaz Rating 2 Argentina
Heavyweight 1958-65 21 wins / 8 losses / 1 draw / 10 KO Hometown: Buenos Aires, Argentina Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto With a 7-2-1 record (the 2 losses 10 round decisions to Mauro Mina), in November 1959 Diaz knocked out Guillermo Dutschmann in the 3rd round to take the Argentine LHW Title that had been vacated by Atilio Caraune's retirement. Diaz successfully defended the title in April 1960 with a 12 round UD against Jose Angel Manzur. After 3 more wins in the LHW division against Hugo Medina, Manzur and Jerry Luedee, Diaz weighted up to heavyweight for the last half of his career. It started out well with an 8th round TKO of Clarence Floyd, but then 3 straight losses in 1961 followed against Von Clay, Lino Rendon and Tony Hughes. Diaz mounted a short comeback in 1962 with a 10th round TKO victory over Tony Alongi who was undefeated at the time at 28-0-0, a 10 round decision over Alonzo Johnson and a 4th round TKO over Dave Rent. That brought in September and December 1962 probably two of Diaz's three toughest fights of his career when he lost a 12 round split decision to Willie Pastrano and then lost a 10 round decision to Gregorio Peralta. After 3 wins against modest competition including a 5th round TKO of Levi Forte, Diaz finished his career in June 1965 when he was stopped in the 4th round by Oscar Bonavena. |

Edegar Da Silva Rating 1 Brazil
Heavyweight 1991-05 15 wins / 8 losses / 0 draws / 9 KO Hometown: Joinville, ? Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto This guy really is not retired, but I rated him as such for my purposes. 7 of 8 losses he was stopped in the fight TKO or KO. Career started out fine enough, 12-2-0 including winning the Brazilian HW Title in August 1998 outpointing Ivan Aparecido Rosa in 10 rounds. Then after a couple more wins after the title fight including another over Rosa, Da Silva then lost four straight fights starting with a 4th round TKO to George Arias in August 2000. Da Silva then is out of the ring for 2-1/2 years when in February 2003, the climbs back in to take on Fabio Eduardo Moli for the vacant WBO Latino HW Title. Moli stops Da Silva in the 5th round. In December of that year, he then is stopped in the 4th round by Marcelo Fabian Dominguez in a title bout for the South American HW crown. That's followed a month later by a 1st round TKO loss to Taras Bidenko. It's then out of the ring for over a year again before Da Silva comes back for 5 bouts in 2005, winning 3 and loosing 2 including a 3rd round KO to Gonzalo Omar Basile for something called the Ricardo Enrique Bochini cup. Elmo Mamede De Carvalho Rating 1 Brazil
Heavyweight 1994-2000 8 wins / 8 losses / 0 draws / 3 KO Hometown/Birthplace: Salvador, Bahia Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto A weak chin curtailed DeCarvalho going farther with his career suffering 7 stoppages in 8 losses. After a 5-0 start including a decision over Marcos Celestino, he lost two straight to Ezequiel Paixao and then to a guy with a 1-6 record. Six months after that though he fights and defeats Marcos Celestino in 10 rounds for the Brazilian HW title. DeCarvalho manages to beat Celestino in a rematch, though not with the title on the line then looses 8th round TKO to Carlos Barcelete. In September 1998 he looses the Brazilian HW title to George Arias and Arias beats him again 3 months later in a title rematch. 3 more losses in his next 4 bouts ends his career. |
