Fifteen Runs Innings Caps Wild Second Tier Match. Clapton Orient maintained their position two lengths within prospects for promotion with a decisive victory against the Bristol City club. The O’s were suffering an eleven runs to seven deficit going into the top of the eighth innings during which they scored fifteen to utterly smother the Robins. O’s put their first five batsmen on with singles and chased pitcher Rowley off the mound, but new pitcher Angus could not stop the bleeding either, and was replaced in the same innings by Steventon, who finally put the cap on the geyser. Orient made eleven base hits during the innings, including one two and one three, and drew five bases on balls as well. Rowley’s pitiful performance earned him the defeat, his tenth against six victories. Orient are second in the Division, six lengths behind the leader Fulham, and two ahead of Blackpool and four ahead of Chelsea. |

Palace came into the League with the absorption of the Southern League clubs to form the Third Division in 1920 season. They had been in the Southern League since 1910. Winners for the Southern League cup in 1910, they immediately fell on hard times, finishing with a .500 season only in 1919 season. This persisted until 1923, when they began to show a little life by finishing 4th. They placed 8th in both 1924 and 1925. Their greatest player all time is Tom Newington, still young at age 25. He's the all time leader for the club in runs scored, triples, batting average and VORP. He also won a Fieldsman of the Year award at second base in 1923. Their greatest pitcher to date is William Crabtree, a 34 year old southpaw from the Southern League days, having begun his career in 1914. He was 24-7 with a 2.36 ERA during their 1923 season. He will probably be eclipsed by Freddie Hall, though. Hall is a 25 year old right-hander who also won 21 in 1923, but he is off to a start that will probably give him a better career in short order than Crabtree, who also missed four years to the war. Here are the club's overall record, leading hitters, and pitching register, which covers their time in the League between 1920 and 1925. |

First Ever Qualifying Match Played Decides Southern Section Promotion. An historic match was played at Gillingham yesterday afternoon. Because of a revision in the laws of the game enacted prior to the season, the promotion spot at the top of the Southern Section table was decided by playing a qualifier, rather than awarding the promotion to the club who had achieved the better run difference during the season. So, instead of giving the spot to the Swansea town club by dint of their 41 runs advantage against the Gills, the Jacks were forced instead to prove their worthiness on the pitch itself. Jacks need not have worried, as they easily dispatched Gills by a count of nine runs to four. Gillingham held the three runs to two lead after four innings, but Swansea scored one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, and then four in the seventh to salt away the game and secure the promotion unto themselves. Third base man May punctuated the victory with a home run worth two runs in the ninth, which itself did not affect the end result but which served as a fitting crown for the club. |
