Saturday, April 21st, 1883: Cincinnati reliever Joe McDoolan revealed today at a press conference that he will retire at the end of the year.

McDoolan's career record shows a 3-4 record with 9 saves and an ERA of 1.44. He has fanned 10 batters in 106 innings and held opposing hitters to a .242 average.

Shaw Hurls Cincinnati to Shutout Win
Saturday, April 21st, 1883: Fans at Bank Street Grounds witnessed the Red Stockings blank the Browns behind a superb effort by Dupee Shaw. The Cincinnati pitcher allowed 3 hits in recording the shutout.

Hines Slams 5 Hits for Detroit
Saturday, April 21st, 1883: "Ever since I picked up my first bat my coaches were always saying to keep your eye on the ball, don't overswing... just make contact and ya never know what'll happen," Detroit's Paul Hines told reporters after the game. "That's all I did today. I made contact and it turned out well."

It definitely turned out well for Hines today as he collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats against Washington. It turned out well for his team, too, as the Wolverines knocked off the Nationals 6-2 at Swampdoodle Grounds.

Wednesday, April 25th, 1883: It was a long day at the plate for the Baltimore Orioles. They never did figure out Ed Cushman and were shut out 5-0. Wednesday, May 23rd, 1883: Just like "Old Man River" Ed Cogswell just keeps on rolling along. The Washington first baseman stretched his hitting streak to 20 games today at Huntington Avenue Grounds. He was 1-for-5 in the Nationals 6-2 win over the Boston Americans.

Monday, July 23rd, 1883: When the National League regular season came to a close yesterday, John Peters was all alone in the top spot in the batting race with a .354 average. The 33-year-old Philadelphia Quakers shortstop smacked 151 hits in 427 at-bats and wrapped up the year with 23 doubles, 11 triples and 1 home run. Peters appeared in 94 games and had 64 RBIs and 89 runs scored.

Atlantics Crowned Champions
Wednesday, August 1st, 1883: Brooklyn topped Louisville 8-7 today at Washington Park I to win the North American BaseBall League Round 1. The Atlantics took the series 4-3.

"This victory belonged to the entire city of Brooklyn and all our great fans," said the team's owner as he hoisted the championship trophy for the 1st time. "Our town and our fans support us all the time...in the good times and the bad."

It was an outstanding year for the Atlantics as they ended up in first place in the National League with a 68-30 regular-season mark.

Shaw Captures 1883 Newcomer of the Year Award
Tuesday, August 14th, 1883: Dupee Shaw's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Cincinnati Red Stockings and today he walked away with the 1883 National League Newcomer of the Year Award.

The 24-year-old starter registered a 29-19 record this season in 48 starts. Over 406.2 innings he gave up 363 hits, struck out 352 and issued 50 walks as he held the opposition to a .221 batting average and fashioned a 1.77 ERA.

Cushman Named Best Rookie This Year
Tuesday, August 14th, 1883: Ed Cushman was pure poison to American League hitters this year. The Cleveland Blues felt very secure when they sent him out to the hill. The 31-year-old starter went after American League hitters with a vengeance and earned the 1883 Newcomer of the Year Award.

His skipper said to reporters, "I wish I had three more like him. He might be inexperienced, but he flat out can pitch."

In 47 starts he went 30-15 with a 1.15 ERA as he struck out 458 in 405.1 innings.

NL Best Mound Performer Named
Thursday, August 16th, 1883: Fred Corey had a sensational 1883 season in the National League. The Brooklyn pitching machine has been proclaimed this year's Outstanding Pitcher Award recipient.

This season Corey starred with a 31-11 record. In 42 starts he gave up 328 base hits and struck out 197 in 362.2 innings with a 1.66 ERA.

1883 AL Outstanding Pitcher Award Announced
Thursday, August 16th, 1883: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1883 has been presented and the American League winner is John Ward of Louisville.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Ward. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Eclipse star told reporters.

Ward excelled with an impressive 33-12 record in 48 starts. In 414.1 innings he yielded 362 hits and 28 walks, while striking out 244 and
compiling a fine 1.39 ERA.

John Peters Wins Best Bat Trophy
Friday, August 17th, 1883: Philadelphia's John Peters put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 1883 National League Outstanding Hitter Award.

The 33-year-old veteran scorched the opposition with a .354 average, picking up 151 hits, 23 doubles, 11 triples, 1 home run and 64 RBIs, while scoring 89 runs.

Friday, August 17th, 1883: Dan Brouthers of Philadelphia was a smashing success this year, winning the Outstanding Hitter Award in the American League.

Sunday, August 17th, 1884: The Louisville Eclipse ignited a huge celebration as they beat the Boston Beaneaters 3-2 to win the Round 1.

Louisville won the series 4-1, capturing the title for the 2nd time. MVP was Jerry Denny.

"We stepped it up at the right time... now we're the champs... it's a great feeling," the victorious manager said.

The champs finished the regular season 77-35 and claimed first place in the American League.

In the jubilant clubhouse after the decisive game, the Eclipse owner proudly stated, "I am so happy for our city. Our great fans deserve this."

Werden Wins NL Rookie of the Year
Saturday, August 30th, 1884: Perry Werden's age didn't show very often in his first year. He performed more like a veteran on the hill for the Boston Beaneaters and today he walked away with the 1884 National League Newcomer of the Year Award.

The 19-year-old starter registered a 36-15 record this season in 55 starts. Over 471 innings he gave up 439 hits, struck out 265 and issued 92 walks as he held the opposition to a .235 batting average and fashioned a 1.49 ERA.

Porter Earns AL Rookie Honor
Saturday, August 30th, 1884: This year Philadelphia's 26-year-old starter Henry Porter outpaced his first-year peers and he was picked as the American League Newcomer of the Year Award winner.

The Athletics newcomer completed the year with a 28-17 mark and a 2.03 ERA in 46 starts, tossed 394.1 innings, fanned 375 and held opposing hitters to a .229 average.

Perry Nabs Prestigious Outstanding Pitcher Award
Monday, September 1st, 1884: The Outstanding Pitcher Award for 1884 has been presented and the National League winner is Perry Werden of Boston.

"It's always nice to receive an award like this," said Werden. "I just hope I can improve on my performance next year and be in the running again," the Beaneaters star told reporters.

Cushman Wins American League Pitching Crown
Monday, September 1st, 1884: This past season Ed Cushman put on quite a show in the American League. In 53 starts he posted a 38-14 record for Cleveland to capture the 1884 Outstanding Pitcher Award.

In 53 starts and 477.2 innings, Cushman yielded 306 hits, holding the opposition to a .177 average. He chalked up 585 strikeouts and posted a 1.24 ERA.

Best Bat In NL Belongs To Kelly
Tuesday, September 2nd, 1884: It's been a year of triumph for veteran King Kelly of the Cincinnati Red Stockings as he hit his way to the 1884 National League Outstanding Hitter Award.

The 26-year-old veteran compiled a .327 average and .387 on-base percentage by putting together 130 hits, 16 doubles, 11 triples, 6 home runs and 41 walks. He also scored 66 times and drove in 66 runs.

AL Announces Best Batter Award
Tuesday, September 2nd, 1884: The American League Outstanding Hitter Award for 1884 has been presented to the talented and hot-hitting Dan Brouthers of the Philadelphia Athletics.

Casey Injured in Freak Off-Field Accident
Thursday, December 25th, 1884: Team officials in St. Louis informed the press that starting pitcher Dan Casey will have to take some time off after he was hurt when he fell down the stairs moving furniture into his new house. Team doctors said he could be out up to one week with a sore knee.

Since joining the league, Casey has compiled an ERA of 2.55 with a career record of 16-19. He has 257 strikeouts in 286.1 innings and has held opponents to a .247 batting average.

Wise Shines in Perfect Game
Friday, May 15th, 1885: Over the course of baseball history, some moments stand a little taller than others. One of those moments happened today at Polo Grounds I. Bill Wise of the St. Louis Browns beat the Giants 7-0 and threw a perfect game. He dominated New York in a way rarely seen. By the end of the game, he had rung up 3 New York hitters on strikeouts, showed superb control in not allowing a single walk and did not even allow a base hit. There were no errors, either. No one got on base.

The fans gave Bill Wise a well-deserved standing ovation as he left the mound. They knew they had witnessed one of the rariest events in baseball.

Wise told reporters in the postgame press conference that he never dreamed of throwing a perfect game. "As a kid, you always think of pitching to win the final game of a championship," Wise said. "You never think of pitching a perfect game, because it just seems unattainable. I'll remember this day for the rest of my life."

In 18 starts this year Wise has crafted a 8-10 record and a 1.37 ERA.
