TWIWBL 13.1: Series XI Notes – Bill James Division
#Detroit Wolverines
With Kevin Hart set to miss 10 days, the Wolverines recalled Matt Anderson to help in the bullpen. #Los Angeles Angels Behind 4 RBIs from Don Buford and a great start from Bret Anderson, the Angels took down the Gothams. 6-1. Anderson gave up 1 run over 8 innings, improving his record to 3-4. Bobby Grich delivered 3 doubles and 4 RBIs in support of another decent start from Doc Gooden in a 6-3 victory for the Angels in the final game of their series with the Gothams. Gooden won his second game, and Joe Nathan picked up his 6th save. #Memphis Red Sox Baltimore's Jim Palmer gave up a 2-run homerun to Reggie Smith in the top of the 3rd, and Jon Lester made it hold up, allowing only 3 hits over 8 innings in improving his record to 4-3. Joe Beggs pitched the 9th for his 5th save. After a 12-4 pasting by Baltimore, the Red Sox sent Eddie Ciccotte down to AAA and recalled Len Barker, injured since Sprint Training. #New York Gothams Buck O'Brien's first start in the WBL most likely earned him a trip back to AAA. O'Brien gave up 7 hits and 6 runs in under 3 innings in a 6-1 loss to the Angels. Two bits of good news for New York: Al Mays, who had struggled mightily, delivered 5 scoreless innings in relief of O'Brien, and Wes Westrum continued to impress, with 3 hits including a solo homerun. Westrums' performance made one choice easy for the Gothams: John Kerins was demoted to AAA, where he was already playing on a rehab assignment. #Wandering House of David The 11-3 pasting suffered at the hands of Homestead hurt, and losing Bob Rush for a few days stings a little. But seeing Pete Browning go down after being hit in the hand chills House of David fans to their bones. Browning, currently slashing 385/419/606, will miss around 3 weeks of action. Jerry Mumphrey has been recalled from AAA to help at CF.

TWIWBL 13.2: Series XI Notes – Cum Posey Division
#Baltimore Black Sox
Paul Blair has been the subject of much skepticism lately, mired in a horrendous slump for most of the season Still, the Baltimore center fielder has provided solid defense, and may be showing signs of finally coming around at that plate. Blair went 3-for-4 including a walkoff homerun as the Black Sox edged Memphis 3-2, bringing his batting average, at long last, over .200. More impressively, the hit came off Jonathan Papelbon, one of the best relievers in the league so far. Papelbon dropped to 0-2. Bill Byrd put in a good start, but wasn't involved in the decision, which went to Don Bessent, who improved to 1-1. Dennis Martinez continues to impress with 7 strong innings. He was actually outpitched by Memphis' Roger Clemens, but the Black Sox jumped all over Turk Farrell en route to a 6-2 victory, led by Larry Gardner's 3 hits and 2-RBI games from Gardner, Bobby Wallace, and Dan McGann. Martinez allowed 5 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings, improving his record to 5-1, and Buddy Groom and Bessent combined to allow only 1 walk over the final 2 innings. A grand slam by Harlond Clift, 4 runs scored by McGann, and 3 hits from McGann and Frank Robinson powered the Red Sox to a 12-4 victory. McGann hit his 5th homerun of the year, and Robinson drove in 4. The win went to Mike Mussina--his first of the year--who pitched 3 scoreless innings in relief of a labored Johnny Sain. #Houston Colt 45's Toad Ramsey continues to befuddle. Impress, but also befuddle. This time, it was a complete game effort against San Francisco, allowing only 6 hits and 2 runs. But the Colt 45's didn't score, so Ramsey's effort resulted in his 4th loss of the year. #Ottawa Mounties Roy Halladay pitched a complete game against Brooklyn, allowing only 1 run and 5 hits in a 7-1 victory for the Mounties. He gave up 3 hits to Beals Becker and 2 to Roy White, and that was it. Anthony Rendon and Ken Griffey, Jr. each had 3 hits for Ottawa, with Roy Sievers delivering a key pinch-hit and Freddy Parent going yard for the 5th time this year.

TWIWBL 13.3: Series XI Notes – Effa Manley Division
#Cleveland Spiders
The Spiders 8-3 win over Chicago could be important for their season. Whit Wyatt produced another fine performance, Stan Coveleski improved to 3-0 with 2.2 innings of perfect relief, Ron Blomberg continued his fantastic season with his 10th homerun and a 2-for-5 day at the plate, Louis Santop went 3-for-4, and, perhaps most importantly, Larry Doby also went 3-for-4, dragging his average closer and closer to .200. 2 hits and 2 RBIs from Jake Stahl backed another good start from Bill Steen in a 5-2 win for Cleveland. Steen had to leave with a back injury, but he looks like he won't miss more than about a week. The win went to Hardie Henderson in relief, despite his allowing both of Chicago's runs. Steen was put on the DL, with Doug Corbett recalled from AAA. #Homestead Grays Hal Carlson and Bartolo Colon combined to blank the House of David on 6 hits, 5-0. The Grays were powered by an unlikely source, as Rick Reichardt went 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs, hitting 2 homeruns on the day. Davey Johnson had 2 hits, and Peaches Graham threw out 3 baserunners in the game. 2 homeruns, 3 hits, 4 runs, and 6 RBIs from Mike Epstein and a strong start from Vean Gregg led the Grays in an 11-2 romp over the House of David. Gregg improved his record to 3-4 with 7.2 strong innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 runs. #Indianapolis ABC's It looked like a 3-run pinch-hit homerun by Portland's Gil Hodges had resigned the ABC's to defeat in the series opener, but they came back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the 8th for an 8-5 victory led by Jake Stenzel's 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Light hitting SS Davey Concepcion added a key 2-run double, and Lefty James--despite giving up a lead--got the win, moving to 3-1, with Rob Murphy picking up his 3rd save. Rob Dibble blew his second save of the year, but a key pinch single from Edd Roush set up a sacrifice fly from Hal Morris in the bottom of the 9th to give Dibble his second victory of the season. Johnny Cueto put in a strong shift: 7 innings, 4 hits, only 1 earned run, but wasn't part of the decision. In the series finale, Danny Hoffman hit 2 homeruns, Joe Morgan had 3 hits, and Oscar Charleston had 3 RBIs in a 10-2 victory. Rube Foster improved his record to 4-2 with 8 strong innings. #Philadelphia Stars The Stars blew open a tight game with 5 runs in the 7th en route to an 8-2 victory over Detroit. Philadelphia had 19 hits--16 of which were singles--with Sherry Magee going 4-for-6 with 3 RBIs and Buck Freeman, Scott Rolen, George Hendrick, and Jose Ramirez each adding 3 hits. Don Carman--hit pretty hard in his WBL debut--got the start, and did OK, giving up 7 hits, but only 1 run, in 4.2 innings. Rheal Cormier moved to 4-0 with 2.1 innings of 1 hit relief. The middle of the Stars' lineup--Rico Carty, Ted Kluszewski, and Freeman--powered the Stars to an 8-6 victory in the series finale. The trio went 8-for-14 with 6 runs scored and 6 RBIs, and Carty and Kluszewski both went deep. Pete Alexander struggled through 6 innings, but got the victory, and Bob Howry picked up his 12th save of the year.

TWIWBL 13.4: Series XI Notes – Marvin Miller Division
#Birmingham Black Barons
Where did that come from? Sam Streeter threw a complete game, 5-hit shutout, blanking Kansas City 1-0, with a homerun from Bob Nieman plating the game's only run. Streeter leveled his record at 2-2 and Rube Marquard was the hard-luck loser for the Monarchs, falling to 2-3 despite only giving up 3 hits in 7 innings. Dick Rudolph was cruising along with his best outing of the year, allowing no runs and 2 hits through 8 innings. Consecutive hits in the top of the 9th chased Rudolph, but Carlos Diaz did just enough to preserve the win, despite giving up a homerun to the Monarchs' Albert Pujols. Rudolph improved to 3-3, and Diaz notched his 7th save. #Brooklyn Royal Giants Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th against Ottawa's closer Tom Henke, Brooklyn pulled victory from the edge of defeat in the first game of a doubleheader as Beals Becker sent a pitch just over the right field wall for the 5-3 win. They couldn't come back against Henke in the second game, as Ottawa split the twin bill with a 5-2 victory. Terry Forster has scuffled recently, earning himself a trip back to AAA, with Brooklyn recalling Trevor Hildenberger from his rehab assignment. #Portland Sea Dogs Wade Miller continues to sparkle for the Sea Dogs, turning in another great performance in his second start of the year, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs over 7+ innings in a 4-3 victory for Portland over Indianapolis. Johan Santana picked up his 15th save despite giving up a run in the 9th. #San Francisco Sea Lions Eddie Plank evened his record at 3-3 with 7 shutout innings, allowing only 5 hits in a 2-0 victory over Houston. Rod Beck pitched a scoreless 9th for his 11th save, and Pedro Guerrero provided the offense with his 4th homerun of the season. Bob Cerv hit really well in his week in the big leagues, slashing 286/286/714 with 2 homeruns. But Bobby Bonds' return from the DL saw Cerv returned to AAA.

TWIWBL 13.5: Boomer Sent On A Pilgrimage
Disgruntled first-baseman George "Boomer" Scott got his wish--an exit from the Memphis Red Sox as the team sent him to the Boston Pilgrims of the High Indy League. The 29 year-old Scott started the year in a platoon with Bill White, but was forced to the bench, hitting only 132/254/283 with 2 homeruns.
The Red Sox pick up some needed minor league depth at catcher, with 25 year-old Kurt Suzuki coming back in the deal, along with 27 year-old shortstop Glenn Wright and promising 22 year-old reliever Jensen Lewis. Memphis waived Joe Borowski (1-1 with a 6.39 ERA at the WBL level) and 2B Pete Runnels, who has struggled both in Memphis and at AAA this season to make room on the 40-man roster for the incoming talent, and promoted 32 year-old OF Fred Lynn from AAA, where he was slashing 330/388/766.

Series XII Preview: Ottawa Mounties @ Homestead Grays
Series XII brings us back to two struggling teams we haven't looked at for a while: the Ottawa Mounties, in last place in the Cum Posey Division at 20-26, 9 games behind Baltimore; and the Homestead Grays, who at 18-28 have the second-worst record in the league.
So the key question here is ... what has gone wrong for these two teams? #Ottawa Mounties Here's what's gone right for Ottawa: they don't make many errors and Tim Raines steals a lot of bases. That's a little harsh. Raines has been excellent, slashing 293/384/475 with 32 steals at 2B and Carlos Delgado (259/385/469 with 9 homeruns) has been pretty consistent in the middle of the lineup. But the Mounties are quite reliant on those two and, after them, there isn't much: Delgado (9) and Raines (7) lead the team in homeruns, with nobody else having more than 5; they also lead the team in RBIs, 2Bs, BBs, and runs. The challenges for Ottawa are summarized by their reliance on the quartet of Anthony Rendon, Freddy Parent, Phil Bradley, and Terry Puhl, all of whom have an OPS in the .700s. If you want to point fingers, clearly both Alex Rodriguez (who has lost his starting job at SS to Parent with a slash line of 214/253/314) and Ken Griffey, Jr. (216/260/259) have been massive disappointments. Both have shown some sign of recovery over the past week or two, but it may be time for a trip to the minors. Roy Sievers has done well in his two weeks in the WBL, and deserves some more playing time. George Cutshaw has also done well, but he plays the same positions as Raines and, as such, has struggled to force his way into the lineup. The bullpen has been solid for Ottawa, led by closer Tom Henke (10 saves, 1.02 ERA) and the duo of Ted Bowsfield and Gary Lavelle, who have combined to go 4-1 with a save and 7 holds. But the starting pitching has been rough, exemplified by the long saga leading to Randy Johnson's demotion. Old Hoss Radbourn (3-3, 4.94 ERA) and Roy Halladay (2-3, 4.52 ERA) have been the best of the group, and newcomers Jim Clancy (1-1, 4.44 ERA) and Jamie Moyer (1-1, 4.71 ERA) have both been useful, but this is clearly an area of need for the Mounties. #Homestead Grays The Grays may not have been projected to be contenders, but they weren't supposed to be this bad. Offensively, the team is solid, with a trio of very strong performers in Mike Epstein (360/448/596), Andrew McCutchen (304/379/494) and Josh Gibson (316/404/463). Sure, they could do with a little more power (Epstein leads the team with 8 homeruns, and McCutcheon and Pops Stargell have 6), but who couldn't? Of the regulars, only Arky Vaughan (192/330/322) is in danger of losing his job, but ultimately he probably draws enough walks to remain useful, especially when his defense is taken into consideration. Which brings us to the pitching ... which has been rough at best. Ray Brown, Hal Carlson, and Vean Gregg have 3 victories each, with Carlson (3.20 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) being the most dependable. Stan Bahnsen (1-0, 2 saves, 2 holds, 3.12 ERA) has been very impressive since being recalled, and has earned his place in the rotation. The best arm out of the bullpen has a 5.79 ERA, which just about sums it up: Kent Tekulve has a team-leading 1.18 WHIP, but has been hit hard at times. Josh Lindblom remains the closer, with 5 saves, but he has a WHIP of 1.86 and has struggled at times. #Series Matchups Ottawa's hurler listed first: Jamie Moyer (1-1, 4.71) @ Ray Brown (3-2, 5.21); Jim Clancy (1-1, 4.44) @ Hal Carlson (3-2, 3.20); Old Hoss Radbourn (3-3, 4.94) @ Vean Gregg (3-4, 4.81); Bob Brown (2-3, 3.91) @ Stan Bahnsen (1-0, 3.12). None of the matchups are terribly compelling, although there are active questions--can Moyer, Clancy, and Bahnsen continue to contribute? Can Radbourn and Carlson cement their spots at the front of their respective rotations? And, of course, will anyone show up in the stands?

Series XII Featured Matchup: Ottawa Mounties @ Homestead Grays
Preview here.
Rain, rain, go away, give us a doubleheader another day. The opening game in this series was rained out, setting up a twinbill the following day. #Game 1: Jamie Moyer @ Ray Brown Both pitchers struggled early, and both turned it around, somewhat. Jamie Moyer gave up 5 runs in 3 innings, including a solo homerun to Andrew McCutcheon and a 2 run shot to Willie Stargell. But with the bullpen on constant alert, Moyer settled down, making it through 6 innings, trailing 5-2. Homestead's Ray Brown gave up 7 hits, but only the 2 runs in 5 innings of work, and the Grays bullpen basically held down the fort, with John Candelaria, Kent Tekulve, Bartolo Colon, and Josh Lindblom combining for 4 solid innings. Lindblom picked up his 6th save. Chris Leroux followed Moyer with a scoreless inning, but hopes of an Ottawa comeback were really dashed when Steve Howe allowed 2 runs, including a homerun to Honus Wagner. McCutcheon had 3 hits and 3 RBIs for the Grays, while--in what really could be an important turnaround for Ottawa--Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey, Jr. combined to go 5-for-8 with 4 runs scored. It was a solid win for Homestead, but one that could have implications for their bullpen in game 2. OTT 4 (Moyer 1-2) @ HOM 7 (Brown 4-2; Candelaria 1 H; Tekulve 3 H; Colon 1 H; Lindblom 6 Sv) HRs: OTT - none; HOM - Stargell (7), McCutcheon (7), Wagner (3) Box Score #Game 2: Jim Clancy @ Hal Carlson Ottawa opened up the scoring in this one, relying on their two best performers of the season, as Tim Raines doubled and stole a base and scored on an RBI double from Carlos Delgado in the top of the first against Hal Carlson. But Homestead began to hit Jim Clancy pretty hard in the 2nd: Josh Gibson led the inning off with a double, Rick Reichardt walked, and a single from Willie Stargell loaded the bases, setting the stage for two consecutive sacrifice flies, one from Tom Brown and one from Arky Vaughan. Chris Sabo added an RBI double, and the Grays emerged with a 3-1 lead. Rick Monday, given a rare start, doubled to lead off the 3rd for Ottawa, and eventually scored on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 3-2. But, Clancy was still struggling, again loading the bases to open the bottom of the 3rd. The Grays would score twice, once on a double play and once on an RBI single from Stargell, extending their lead to 5-2. The wheels fell off for Carlson in the top of the 5th. Emil Gross led off with a double for the Mounties, Monday walked, and Raines and Anthony Rendon delivered RBI hits. A walk to Delgado loaded the bases, and the Grays brought in Earl Hamilton ... who immediately walked in a run, giving Ottawa a 6-5 lead. Given the lead, Clancy suddenly excelled, retiring 11 straight batters between a walk to Vaughan in the 4th and a 2-out single by Davey Johnson in the 7th. Greg Holland relieved Clancy and got out of the inning without allowing anything else. Holland gave up a leadoff double to Gibson in the bottom of the 8th, and an RBI single to Brown to tie the game. Hamilton's work should not go unmentioned--he allowed only 2 hits in 5 innings in what is probably his best outing of the season. But he wouldn't feature in the decision, as the offenses were unable to do much, sending the game into extra innings. Ottawa's closer, Tom Henke, gave up hits to Roberto Clemente and Andrew McCutcheon to open the bottom of the 11th, and after an out, a single to Mike Epstein to load the bases. The Mounties brought in Ted Bowsfield, who retired Honus Wagner, but gave up a walk-off grand slam to Reichardt to win the game for Homestead. Henke took the loss, as the winning run was his responsibility, and the win went to Michael Jackson, who threw a hitless 1.2 innings in relief of Hamilton. Gibson had 4 hits for the Grays and scored twice, while Raines and Rendon had 2 hits each for Ottawa. OTT 6 (Henke 0-3; Holland 3 BSv) @ HOM 10 (Jackson 2-1) HRs: Reichardt (5) Box Score #Game 3: Old Hoss Radbourn @ Carlos Zambrano With Vean Gregg not ready to go, Homestead turned to Carlos Zambrano to make the start against Old Hoss Radbourn. Zambrano's performance--especially since losing his spot in the rotation--has been far better than his 1-2 record and 6.28 ERA might indicate. Radbourn sits at 3-3, 4.94. The first inning had a couple of minor baseball moments: In the top of the first, Tim Raines was thrown out stealing by Josh Gibson, something that has only happened 4 times in 37 attempts this season. Then, in the bottom of the frame, Radbourn loaded the bases with no outs, but got out of the inning unscathed. Gary Carter gave Ottawa a 2-0 lead with a homerun in the top of the 2nd. In the top of the 3rd, Gibson did it again, ending the inning with a strike-em-out, throw-em-out double play by nailing Raines at second base once more. A few innings later, Pops Stargell tied the game with a solo shot down the rightfield line. They would take the lead when an RBI single from Andrew McCutcheon scored Roberto Clemente. It was a see-saw game for a bit: in the top of the 5th, a solo homerun from Ken Griffey, Jr. would tie the game at 3; in the bottom of the inning, another hit from Stargell, this one an RBI double, would return the lead to the Grays; in the top of the 6th, Terry Puhl would go yard to again tie the game, 4-4. Cliff Lee-considered for the start originally--relieved Zambrano in the top of the 5th, and Greg Holland took over from Radbourn in the bottom of the inning. Holland was greeted by a Clemente homerun, and gave up 3 walks and another hit before being relieved managing to record only a single out. Ottawa's bullpen was already stretched, and it got worse: Steve Howe surrendered a run on a sacrifice fly, but was forced from the ballgame with an apparent back injury. Chris Leroux--already a bit overworked--replaced him, and when the inning ended, Homestead was up, 7-4. Rick Reichardt added a 2-run homerun, and Kent Tekulve slammed the door with 2 scoreless innings as the Grays won, 9-4. McCutcheon, Stargell, and Clemente had 3 hits each, with Reichardt driving in 3. After the game, Howe was put on the DL, with Ottawa recalling the impressive Johnny Podgajny from AAA. OTT 4 (Holland 2-1) @ HOM 9 (Lee 3-0; Tekulve 1 Sv) HRs: OTT - Carter (4), Griffey Jr (2), Puhl (4); HOM - Reichardt (6), Stargell (8), Clemente (6) Box Score #Game 4: Bob Brown @ Vean Gregg Vean Gregg was ready to take the ball for game four, hoping to lead Homestead to the sweep over Ottawa and Bob Brown. Brown and Gregg matched zero's through five innings, each allowing only 3 hits. It remained scoreless until the top of the 8th, when with two outs Carlos Delgado doubled in Tim Raines for a 1-0 Ottawa lead. After an error by Honus Wagner, Ottawa added another run, making it 2-0. Brown couldn't come out to take the mound in the 8th, so the Mounties turned to one of the hottest pitchers in the WBL, Gary Lavelle. It got interesting in the bottom of the 9th. Lavelle got the first out before giving way to closer Tom Henke, who has struggled in his last few appearances. Henke gave up 3 consecutive hits to load the bases with one out. But he struck out Phil Garner and got Andrew McCutcheon to fly out to Ken Griffey, Jr. in centerfield to end the game, salvaging a win in the series for Ottawa. Arky Vaughan had 3 hits for Homestead, who outhit the Mounties, 7-6 but were unable to put a run on the board. OTT 2 (Brown 3-3; Lavelle 4 H; Henke 11 Sv) @ HOM 0 (Gregg 3-5) HRs: none Box Score #Series Notes The story of the series was the collapse of Ottawa's bullpen--a strength up to now. But Tom Henke, Steve Howe, and Greg Holland all struggled quite a bit in the series. The extent of Bob Brown's injury is unknown at this time, which could be quite a blow for Ottawa, as his 3.43 ERA is quite respectable. Carlos Delgado was 6-for-12 and Phil Bradley 4-for-10 in a series where the Mounties struggled to do much offensively. For Homestead, Roberto Clemente was 7-for-12, Josh Gibson was 5-for-12, Arky Vaughan was 5-for-10, Andrew McCutcheon 8-for-19, Rick Reichardt 5-for-17 with 2 homeruns, and Pops Stargell 6-for-17 with 2 homeruns, 2 doubles, and 5 RBIs. Yeah, they feasted a bit on Ottawa pitching.

TWIWBL 14.0: May 17th Indy League Update – High Indy
{ On the 17th of each month, we'll take a look at the Independent Leagues, a three-tier system with promotion and relegation. Transactions are allowed between the Independent Leagues and the WBL teams. }
The Low and Mid Indy Leagues have barely started their seasons, but the High Indy League is about 40 games in. The High Indy is a 16 team league, where the bottom 4 teams are relegated each year. The standings are a remarkable mess, with a very clear cause: the Durham Bulls are 2-38 on the season. Two wins. And thirty-eight losses. That allows four teams to have either 26 or 27 wins, with the Tampa Bay Tarpons, at 27-13, the best of the lot. Durham has struggled through with a highly compromised pitching staff, including two hurlers--Dustin Hermanson and Euel Moore--who have been thrown out almost every day, and allowed to rack up ERA's over 25. Hermanson is 1-12, Moore 0-9. Clearly, the league needs to intervene with the management here. The team has had some decent offensive performers, especially in the OF from Mike A. Marshall and Whitey Witt, but also from the two-way wonder that is Kevin Seitzer. Seitzer is slashing 294/328/514 as a 3B, and is also 0-1 with a save (remember, they have 2 wins all year) as the Bulls' closer. Durham's woes may be addressed, as the WBL's New York Gothams have sent them five players--four pitchers and SS Davy Force--in exchange for young Freddie Fitzsimmons. As part of the resulting roster juggling, the Gotham's waived Ken Boyer. #Top Performers Curt Motton of the Minneapolis Millers has been far and away the best player in the High Indy League, slashing along at 379/485/793 with 16 homeruns. Motton has created 2.9 WAR, better than the next-best batters by 0.7. In fact, only 3 other players--Al Oliver, Jim Landis, and Heinie Wagner--are over 2.0 WAR. Oliver, only 23 years old, is attracting some interest from WBL teams with his 356/409/671 line, as is 22 year old 1B Freddie Freeman (351/471/623). An all league team might look something like this: C: Darrin Fletcher (Tampa Bay). 374/429/661. 1B: Freddie Freeman (Calgary). 351/471/623. 2B: Heinie Wagner (Lexington). 370/424/580. 3B: Matt Williams (Venice). 342/390/639. SS: Kristopher Negron (Toledo). 303/357/620. LF: Curt Motton (Minneapolis). 379/485/793. CF: Al Oliver (Dallas). 356/409/671. RF: Gene Woodling (Denver). 368/472/618. SP: Jack Powell (Tampa Bay). 5-1, 2.04; Vito Tamulis (Venice) 2-1, 2.30; Jerry Reuss (Jacksonville) 6-1, 2.32; Jack Harshman (Denver) 6-2, 3.15. RP: Bruce Dal Canton (Toledo) 0-1, 11 Sv, 2.08; Mike Harkey (Dallas) 0-1, 2 Sv, 1.53; Bobby Seay (Oakland) 0-1, 1 Sv, 1.77 ERA. If limited to true prospects for WBL teams--say, players 25 and under--it would look like this (age in parens): C: Fletcher (22). 1B: Freeman (22). 2B: Bill Doran (Boston, 24). 353/421/520. 3B: Williams (25). SS: Don Buddin (24, Lexington). 233/350/451. LF: Dick Wakefield (22, Calgaray). 313/386/607. CF: Oliver (23). RF: Nelson Cruz (24, Tampa Bay). 288/393/568. #Boomer Report George Scott is 4-for-8 with 3 homeruns since being traded to the Boston Pilgrims.

TWIWBL 15.0: Series XII Notes
May 21
We're 50 games into the season, and the standings are beginning to matter a little. And, they're tightening up. Los Angeles and Detroit are tied at 26-24 in the Bill James Division, with the New York Gothams 1/2 game back and the House of David only 2 behind. And, the New York Black Yankees have been reeled back in over in the Effa Manley Division, with both Cleveland and Philadelphia within 3 games. In the other 2 divisions, the leads are slightly larger. The surprising Baltimore Black Sox, with a league leading 32-18 record, are 5 games up on the Chicago American Giants in the Cum Posey Division and Portland leads Brooklyn by 5.5 in the Marvin Miller Division. Most believe Baltimore is overperforming meaning only Portland--maybe--is building a dependable lead. The league's emerging parity is underscored by the longest winning and losing streak being 3 games right now (Portland having won 3 in a row, Birmingham having lost). Baltimore and the Homestead Grays are 8-2 over their last 10 games (Homestead's streak leaves them only at 21-29, but still is encouraging) while the House of David, Chicago, Brooklyn, and Miami have all only won 3 of their last 10 games). #Awards Baltimore's 36-year old 1B, Dan McGann, took home the Player of the Week award, hitting .588 with 2 homeruns, 4 RBIs, and 9 runs scored, lifting his overall batting average to .314. #Performance The batter leading the league in 2 of the 3 slash categories? Not Babe Ruth, but San Francisco's Reggie Jackson (who is second to Ruth in SLG as well). Top Batters: Reggie Jackson (SFS) 378/489/649; Stan Musial (KAN) 360/425/602, 67 H; Babe Ruth (NYY) 339/445/699, 17 HR, 45 R, 3.0 WAR; Willie Mays (NYG) 352/405/531, 69 H; Rico Carty (PHI) 347/410/569, 19 2B; Louis Santop (CLE) 314/348/495, 7 3B; Terry Puhl (OTT) 255/318/422, 5 3B; Eric Davis (NYY) 284/333/553, 15 HR, 53 RBI; Doug Radar (LAA) 314/364/503, 49 RBI; Rickey Henderson (SFS) 240/399/323, 43 BB, 37 SB. Top Starters: Walter Johnson (POR) 6-1, 3.65, 2.3 WAR; Dennis Martinez (BAL) 6-1, 3.07, 1.08 WHIP; Ron Guidry (NYY) 5-3, 3.10, 83 K, 1,06 WHIP; Lefty Grove (SFS) 4-3, 3.45, 71 K; Don Drysedale (BRK) 4-2, 2.60; Camilo Pascual (MIA) 4-3, 2.90; CC Sabathia (HOD) 5-3, 3.01, 1.9 WAR. Top Relievers: Johan Santana 1-1, 3.00, 17 Sv; Terry Adams (CLE) 0-1, 1.69, 12 Sv; Bob Howry (PHI) 1-2, 5.09, 12 Sv; Ron Reed (PHI) 0-2, 2.96, 2 Sv, 9 H; Aroldis Chapman (MIA) 0-2, 0.00, 9 Sv; Joe Beggs (MEM) 0-0, 0.00, 7 Sv; Brian Wilson (NYG) 0-0, 1.93, 5 Sv, 0.79 WHIP; Jonathan Papelbon (MEM) 0-2, 2.01, 3 Sv, 3 H, 0.90 WHIP. #Streaks With Thurman Munson's hitting streak being stopped at 22 games (1 behind Ruth's 23 earlier this year), there are no active hitting streaks above 13 games. However, Indianapolis' Oscar Charleston has reached base in 24 straight games (a league high), Munson in 23, and Terry Puhl in 19. In oddities, Rickey Henderson has stolen 26 straight bases and Johnny Bench of the ABC's has 3 consecutive pinch hits. On the mound, Baltimore's Bill Byrd hasn't given up a run in 14 innings and Cleveland's Terry Adams and San Francisco's Rod Beck have each converted their last 11 save opportunities. Not coincidental to Baltimore's rise in the standings, Frank Robinson has been on a 14 game tear where he's hitting 453/525/755. Damian Jackson remains probably the coldest hitter in the WBL, managing only 068/212/068 over 20 games. On the mound, CC Sabathia is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP over his last 7 starts (51 innings) and the Gothams' Sad Sam Jones has a 2.57 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP over his last 42 innings. At the other end, Miami's Ramon Martinez is 0-3 with a 9.45 ERA over his last 4 starts and San Francisco's Dennis Eckersley truly earned his demotion to AAA, going 1-3 with a 9.74 ERA over 5 starts. Series XII Results Taking 3 of 4 in Series XII Baltimore over Los Angeles Portland over Birmingham Philadelphia over Brooklyn Chicago over Indianapolis Detroit over San Francisco Homestead over Ottawa Memphis over Miami Taking 2 out of 3 New York Gothams over Cleveland (one rainout) Series Splits Houston @ New York Black Yankees House of David @ Kansas City

TWIWBL 15.1: Series XII Notes – Bill James Division
#Detroit Wolverines
Hal Newhouser allowed 1 hit and 1 run in 6 innings ... along with a WLB record-tying 8 walks. But it was enough for a win, improving his record to 2-1 and lowering his ERA to 1.67. Gene Conley, Buddy Napier, John Hiller, and Mike Henneman combined to allow only 1 more hit over the rest of the ballgame, with Henneman picking up his 9th save in a 2-1 victory for Detroit over San Francisco. Doyle Alexander was moved into the starting rotation, which may last only as long as Si Johnson's rehab assignment (by which point, the Wolverines are hoping the mix of Napier, Matt Anderson, and Mickey Lolich have worked themselves out in terms of who belongs at the big league level). #Los Angeles Angels Pud Galvin and Harry Howell have been replaced in the Angels' starting rotation by Nolan Ryan and Chuck Finley; really the only surprise here is that Doc Gooden has retained his starting spot despite continuing to struggle. The Angels also made a shock move, replacing their entire catching corps by sending Jim Stephens and Brian Downing to AAA and promoting Ron Hassey and John Stearns, who are expected to platoon for the big league club. As part of this, the club recalled Rusty Staub to help fill in at RF, and waived Armando Benitez and his 8.00+ ERA. These moves also mean that Elmer Valo and Kal Daniels find spots in the lineup every day (Valo in RF, Daniels as the DH). #Memphis Red Sox Nomar Garciaparra's demotion to AAA from the disabled list was no surprise, but the choice to also send both Bob Brenly and Dustin Pedroia to New Orleans may have been. Billy Bryan was recalled from AAA, but Brenly's demotion means Jim Pagliaroni becomes an everyday catcher. Ivan DeJesus was recalled as well, mostly due to his defensive versatility. #New York Gothams Led by 3 hits apiece from Yasiel Puig and Pinky Higgins, the Gothams destroyed Cleveland 10-3. Juan Marichal improved to 5-1 with the victory. Buck O'Brien's time in the WBL was very brief, as after being left as sacrificial arm in a blowout game, absorbing 11 hits in just over 2 innings pitched, O'Brien was returned to AAA with Carl Hubbell making his long awaited return from injury. #Wandering House of David In a see-saw game, the House of David relied on 4 hits from George Stone and Ryne Sandberg and 3 RBIs from Ron Santo in a 15-9 triumph over Kansas City. The Monarchs hit 4 homeruns, but the House of David responded by outhitting them, 22 to 13. After Wade Miley was hit hard, Bob Rush continued his great season with 4 innings, allowing only 1 run and improving his record to 4-1. Rush has replaced Ferguson Jenkins in the House of David's rotation and Bruce Sutter has been named the closer, with Tom Niedenfeuer out for several months. Jerry Mumphrey, Jung Ho Kang, and Bunny Downs were all sent down to AAA (essentially giving Sammy Sosa the job in CF for the time being). Dave Altizer was waived to make room for Craig Reynolds on the 40-man roster, and Jim Edmonds and Anthony Rizzo were recalled as well. All of that results in Dan Ford parlaying his strong showing with the House of David into a starting job in RF.

TWIWBL 15.2: Series XII Notes – Cum Posey Division
#Baltimore Black Sox
Ned Garvin kept Los Angeles' Gerrit Cole from becoming the first 7 game winner in the WBL, spinning a brilliant 8 innings, allowing only 2 runs in a 4-2 Black Sox victory. Garvin moved to 4-1 on the year, and Bob Miller picked up his 4th save. Curt Blefary hit his 14th and Harlond Clift his 8th homerun of the year. In the next game, Dennis Martinez moved to 6-1 on the year, allowing only 3 hits and 1 run in 7.2 innings. Bryce Harper drove in 2, and Harper, Ken Singleton, and Dan McGann all chipped in with 2 hits. Bill Byrd pitched 8.1 innings of shutout ball before being relieved by Don Bessent, who finished the job in a 5-0 win for the Black Sox. Byrd brought his ERA under 4.00 and improved his record to 4-2, helped by 3 hits from Bobby Wallace and the suddenly resurgent Paul Blair, who even hit his 4th homerun of the year in the game. Clearly not a fan of the if it ain't broke school of thought, the team with the best record in the WBL shook its roster up some on the day off, demoting P Mark Baldwin, 3B Brooks Robinson, and SS Mark Belanger to AAA. Baldwin and Robinson had done very little in their opportunities, and Belanger had only played in 7 games all season. P Bob Welch, and IFs Cal Ripken, Jr. and Brian Roberts were recalled to the big league club. #Chicago American Giants Frank Thomas went 3-for-4 and Dick Allen had 3 RBI's to lead Chicago to a 5-4 victory over Indianapolis. Herb Pennock survived 6 rocky innings to pick up his 2nd win, with AJ Minter pitching a perfect 9th for his 6th save. Adrian Gonzalez was sent to AAA, ending his nightmare of a year so far in the majors; with Joe Horlen being promoted to fill out the bullpen and C Pop Snyder being waived. All of that will result in Cristobal Torriente and Avisail Garcia seeing more time in the American Giants' OF. #Houston Colt 45s Behind 3 hits and 3 RBIs from George Brett, including his 5th homerun of the year, the Colt 45s put away the Black Yankees, 9-4. It could be a difficult game for Houston, as Bret Saberhagen and Casey Stengel (who also hit his 5th homerun) both had to leave with injuries. Bones Ely was recalled, and if you ignore a 499 foot homerun to Babe Ruth and one nearly as long to Lou Gehrig, he did alright, earning the save with 3 innings of work in a 13-5 blowout win. Craig Biggio drove in 4 and HR Johnson and Lance Berkman 3 each in support of Roy Oswalt, who moved to 5-2 on the year. Brad Lidge was replaced by Billy Wagner as Houston's closer, with Mike Hartley being sent to AAA. Carney Lansford was recalled from the minors to add another bat off the bench. #Kansas City Monarchs 2 homeruns from Stan Musial helped the Monarchs overcome a 90 minute rain delay in an 11-5 win over the House of David. Musial drove in 4, and the win went to Connie Johnson, who pitched 3 scoreless innings after the rains came down. Who knows what to make of Luke Hamlin? He seems to mix mediocre starts with absolute gems. This was one of the latter, as Hamlin had a no-hitter into the 7th and ended up with a 2-hit, complete game shutout to level his record at 3-3. 5 pitchers had thrown 3-hit shutouts, but this was the first game to go below that, and it was the 3rd best game score of the season at 86. Willie McGee was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs in the 6-0 victory. Hamlin's performance was especially welcome, as the Monarchs' bullpen was fairly decimated. Jose Rijo lost his spot in the starting rotation in favor of Adam Wainwright, and McGee--who had been in a platoon with Fielder Jones--has become the everyday CF for the Monarchs. #Ottawa Mounties Greg Holland was sent to AAA with Ryan Dempster coming back the other way. Josh Donaldson--0-for-15 in his time in the big leagues--was returned to AAA as well, with Steve Garvey coming off the DL to return to Ottawa. The Mounties would like to promote Larry Parrish, who is playing very well at 3B, but haven't found a corresponding move to free up room on the 40-man roster.

TWIWBL 15.3: Series XII Notes – Effa Manley Division
#Cleveland Spiders
Ron Blomberg had 3 hits and 4 RBIs, leading the Spiders to an opening game victory over the New York Gothams, 9-4. Cleveland OF Johnny Bates had an odd day: 3 walks and 2 sacrifice bunts, meaning he walked up to the plate 5 times without an official at-bat. The win went to Cy Young, now 3-2, and Doug Corbett pitched 2 scoreless innings to close it out for his first save. Nap Lajoie and Evan Longoria were both sent to AAA to try to get their swings on track. IF Bobby Knoop and OF Kenny Lofton were recalled to Cleveland. The challenge for the Spiders remains juggling playing time at DH/C/1B, with Blomberg, Louis Santop, John Ellis, and Jake Stahl among their better contributors. #Homestead Grays Earl Hamilton moved into the starting rotation, but the fifth slot remains up in the air, with Carlos Zambrano recovering a bit from his early season struggles and John Candelaria not showing enough to stake a solid claim. Cliff Lee was sent to AAA. With a slash line of 162/311/216, Peaches Graham should be joining him, but there aren't a lot of options in the minors, and Graham's ability to get on base has some value, especially given how limited his role is as Josh Gibson's backup. #Indianapolis ABC's Lefty James will miss about 3 weeks with a sore elbow, which is a blow to the Indianapolis bullpen as the lefty was 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA. Octavio Dotel was promoted from AAA to take James' place. Clay Carroll has been struggling in his bullpen role, but not enough to warrant demotion, at least not until the ABC's learn more about what they have in Dotel. 3B has been a problem spot for Indianapolis all season. Chase Headley's demotion to AAA hands the fulltime job to Ed Charles, but it's not clear that's a long-term solution. Barry Larkin was recalled to take Headley's spot, but he's more likely to pressure Davey Concepcion at SS than to challenge for the 3B job. #New York Black Yankees Jack Scott opened the series against Houston with a 6-hit shutout victory, 4-0. Mickey Mantle, Albert Belle, and Thurman Munson each had 2 hits, with Munson extending his hitting streak to 21 games. In a game that saw Munson's hitting streak end at 22 games, the Black Yankees clawed their way back to a walk-off win in 12 innings. Babe Ruth plated Derek Jeter with a hit through the drawn-in infield to give Goose Gossage his 3rd victory on the season. Gossage, Ralph Citarella, and Dellin Betances combined for 5 innings of 1-hit relief after a strong start from Waite Hoyt. Belle had 3 hits, Ruth and Jeter 2 each. The recent dip in form by the Black Yankees has revived the question of what to do with Willie Randolph and Craig Counsell, neither of whom are hitting well enough to justify a big league roster spot. The challenge is that there really aren't any options, especially with New York carrying 12 pitchers. Aaron Hill was promoted to AAA, and if he does well there, he may replace Counsell on the big league roster shortly. #Philadelphia Stars Led by Buck Freeman's 7th homerun of the year and Robin Roberts' best start, the Stars put together walk-off, 3-2 victory over Brooklyn. The win went to Bob McClure in relief of Roberts, and was sealed by an RBI single from Sherm Lollar, scoring Scott Rolen. The top of Philadelphia's lineup--Chase Utley and Gavvy Cravath--went 5-for-9 with 3 runs scored and 5 RBIs, leading the Stars over Brooklyn, 11-3. Utley, Sherry Magee, and Rico Carty all homered, and Ray Collins improved to 5-2 on the season with John Montgomery Ward throwing 3+ scoreless innings for his second save of the season. Philadelphia is in a hard situation with Bill Dickey at C and Mickey Doolin at SS, both of whom are stretching credulity on how much defensive value a player can add. Both Dickey and Doolin carry OPS' below .500, but for now both retain their jobs. The Stars would love recently recalled Jimmy Rollins to show more offensively to push Doolin, but so far, no luck.

TWIWBL 15.4: Series XII Notes – Marvin Miller Division
#Birmingham Black Barons
The Black Barons may have found something with Tim Hudson. The recent callup improved to 3-0 with 8 strong innings against Portland, allowing 4 hits and 2 runs. Birmingham scored 5 runs against Walter Johnson in the 3rd inning in the 6-2 victory, preventing Johnson from notching his 7th win of the year. Tommy Herr--he of the .354 average--hit his first homerun of the season. Not all the news was great for Birmingham, as Hoyt Wilhelm had to leave the game injured in the 9th inning. It looks like Wilhelm will miss about 5 days, leaving it up in the air whether the Black Barons will put him on the DL. Playing .400 ball, the Black Barons made some major changes. Greg Maddux and Warren Spahn were both sent to AAA, as was closer Carlos Diaz, with Fred Fussell returning to Birmingham after injury rehab and Steve Bedrosian being recalled all the way from AA, where he had allowed only 8 hits in 22 innings. Juan Rincon will take over as closer from Diaz. Additionally, Chipper Jones and Emil Frisk were both waived, and 3B Pie Traynor was recalled into a platoon with struggling Eddie Matthews. They would shake it up more, but the minor league talent that is performing well largely duplicates the only bright spots at the big league level--OFs Bob Nieman and Billy Southworth and IFs Frank McCormick, Frank Isbell, and Herr are playing too well to be replaced at the moment. #Brooklyn Royal Giants Brickyard Kennedy and Smokey Joe Williams were both sent to AAA, with Dave Von Ohlen completing his rehab assignment and Tommy Hanson being recalled. Sandy Koufax moves into the starting rotation, taking Kennedy's slot. Additionally, Pee Wee Reese was released and Hobe Ferris demoted to AAA, with Ray Dandridge and Hi Myers coming to Brooklyn. Mike Piazza lost his starting role, and is on the verge of demotion as well. #Miami Cuban Giants Alejandro Oms and Will Clark each hit homeruns (Oms' first of the year) and Charlie Bennett added a key long ball to blow the game open as Miami beat Memphis, 8-4. Don Newcombe got his 2nd win on the year. Not all the news was good for the Cuban Giants, as Carlos Moran had to leave the game with an apparent elbow injury. Sandy Consuegra was sent to AAA with Steve Brown receiving the call to Miami, a move that necessitated Yonder Alonso's being waived. 17 year old Martin Dihigo has struggled since returning from the DL, but his defensive versatility keeps him in Miami for the time being. #Portland Sea Dogs Kent Hrbek had 4 hits and Jim Fregosi--who had stranded 6 runners on base earlier in the game--delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the Sea Dogs over the Black Barons 3-2. Portland pitchers only allowed 4 hits in the game (all from starter Jerry Koosman, who gave up 2 earned runs in 8 innings of work). Johan Santana picked up the win to even his record at 1-1. The Sea Dogs have some good decisions to make on the mound. Wade Miller's fantastic turns in the starting rotation mean that Smokey Joe Wood returns from injury to the bullpen instead of his starting spot. Bob Porterfield and Randy Myers both did well in Portland, but Wood and Jim Kern's return send them back to AAA, along with Frank Williams. On the bench, the Greg Litton question persists: Litton serves as a reserve at a ton of positions, but is struggling to reach a .400 OPS. He remains for now, but the team is considering a bench shake up, returning Litton, Jeff Burroughs, and Gary Pettis to AAA due to their offensive struggles. #San Francisco Sea Lions The Sea Lions overcame a 5 run deficit, winning the game against Detroit 8-7 with a walk-off homerun from Jack Clark in the bottom of the 10th. Jimmy Bloodworth homered and had 4 RBIs and Reggie Jackson continued his torrid season going 3-for-5. The win went to Ron Robinson, who is now 3-1. Dennis Eckersley was returned to AAA to try to find his rhythm on the mound again, with Huston Street being recalled to shore up the middle of the bullpen. Charlie Root will replace Eckersley in the rotation. In a somewhat surprising move, Charlie Reilly was sent to AAA, while Eddie Joost and Mickey Cochrane remain on the roster. Bob Cerv, who had impressed in a brief stint with the Sea Lions, was recalled into a very crowded OF.

Series XIII Preview: Memphis Red Sox @ Houston Colt 45’s
We haven't touched on these two clubs since the very start of the season, when Houston visited Homestead in Series I and Memphis hosted Birmingham in Series III.
#Memphis Red Sox Memphis is struggling. They come into series XII 10 games below .500 at 20-30, but only 6 games out in the Bill James Division. They have really had issues across the board, with some recent hiccups in the bullpen calling what had been a strength all season into question. There are some bright spots: Ted Williams is a likely all-star, slashing 291/381/542 and Reggie Smith has been on a tear, bringing his line up to 307/368/513. Those two, along with Mookie Betts and Bill White have been quite dependable all season. The biggest concern offensively is probably Wade Boggs, who has been removed from the 2-spot in the lineup given his 244/362/327 slash line. Still, the OBP is solid and the Memphis faithful are convinced he'll bounce back. The bigger question is how the sextet of recently promoted players, especially infielders Claude Ritchey and Wayne Causey, will perform at the WBL level. On the mound Jon Lester leads the staff in wins at 5-3 with a quite solid 3.91 ERA. Roger Clemens, who has shown real flashes of brilliance, has little to show for it, at 0-4 with a 5.56 ERA to date. The other starters--Dean Chance, Tim Wakefield and Nixey Callahan--have been perfectly fine, but little more. Joe Beggs has 7 saves and is yet to allow a run over 13 innings, and Jonathan Papelbon has been fantastic setting him up. Getting to Papelbon via Turk Farrell and Heath Bell has been bumpy at times, but overall the bullpen has been solid for the Red Sox. So, it's a team in need of better starting pitching and hoping the changes they have made offensively might all click. #Houston Colt 45's Houston is who they are: currently 25-25 and 7 games back in the Cum Posey Division. They're a solid team across the board, lacking power and suffering a bit in their bullpen, but just ... solid. Which is almost a compliment. Jim Wynn, Jeff Bagwell, and HR Johnson have been their best players offensively. Wynn, slashing 293/402/467, leads the team in OBP and SLG, and Johnson at .324 in BA. Wynn and Johnson have combined to steal 33 bases in 42 attempts, making the top of their lineup dangerous on the basepaths. Bagwell has 7 homeruns to lead the Colt 45's and his 27 RBIs trail George Brett by 1. The most obvious need is for one or more of Tony Gwynn, Craig Biggio, or Carlos Correa to break out of OPS' hovering roughly around .700. The starting pitching has been anchored, as expected, by Roy Oswalt at 5-2, 4.21. But the contributions of Toad Ramsey and Stubby Overmire have been totally unexpected, and if Bret Saberhagen's recent starts are indicative of him getting back on track, the rotation could be significantly better than average. In the bullpen, Brad Lidge leads with 6 saves, but his 9.35 ERA has moved him out of the closer role, which now falls to Billy Wagner, who has impressed with a team low 2.38 ERA and 0.79 WHIP. It's not clear how much longer the team will stick with Leon Day, Dock Ellis, or Bones Ely at the deep end of the bullpen. #Series Matchups Memphis' starter listed first. Nixey Callahan (3-5, 4.91) @ Stubby Overmire (0-2, 3.58); Tim Wakefield (2-3, 4.33) @ Stephen Strasburg (2-3, 3.81); Roger Clemens (0-4, 5.56) @ Bret Saberhagen (3-3, 5.29); Jon Lester (5-3, 3.91) @ Roy Oswalt (5-2, 4.21). It's hard to argue that Memphis has the edge in any of the matchups: maybe, if Clemens puts together all the parts of his best starts and maybe Lester over Oswalt.

Series XIII Featured Matchup: Memphis Red Sox @ Houston Colt 45’s
Preview here.
#Game One: Nixey Callahan @ Stubby Overmire Ah, the Nixey v Stubby matchup we've all been waiting for ... The Red Sox got to Stubby Overmire in the top of the first as Jim Pagliaroni singled home Ted Williams for an early 1-0 lead. It was short-lived, as an RBI from Jeff Bagwell tied it up in the bottom of the inning. But from there the pitchers took over until the bottom of the 4th, when Houston loaded the bases against Callahan. They scored one run on a groundout from Jimmy Wynn to take the lead, 2-1, but that was it. Stubby gave up his 2nd run in the top of the 6th on a double by Vern Stephens, who then scored on a double by Eddie Rosario. That gave the Red Sox a 3-2 edge, with Nixey Callahan near the end of his tether, having thrown 98 pitches in 5 innings. The Memphis bench may have waited too long: Callahan's 100th pitch was sent deep into right-center field by Tony Gwynn to tie the game back up at 3. Stubby walked Claude Ritchey to start the 7th inning, and was relieved by Leon Day, while Turk Farrell took over from Nixey in the bottom of the frame. The relievers were great for both teams: Andrew Chafin took over from Day, and we were still tied at 3 at the end of 9 innings. Jonathan Papelbon is struggling a bit right now: he walked two before inducing a double play from Carlos Correa to get out of the 10th, then in the bottom of the 11th, gave up a single to Gwynn before getting Jorge Posada to hit into another double play. But, with two outs, Wynn walked, stole second, a scored on a softly hit single into LF by HR Johnson, sending the home crowd happy with the Houston victory. Mark Melancon got the win, moving to 4-1 on the year, while Papelbon fell to 0-3. Gwynn went 4-for-5, and has brought his batting average up to over .280. MEM 3 (Papelbon 0-3) @ HOU 4 (Melancon 4-1) HRs: HOU - Gwynn (4) Box Score #Game Two: Tim Wakefield @ Stephen Strasburg Ted Williams' 11th homerun of the year gave Memphis a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. It lasted until the bottom of the 3rd, when DJ LeMahieu led off with a double against Tim Wakefield, moved to 3rd on a sacrifice fly, and scored on a wild pitch. HR Johnson took Wakefield into the short left field porch for a 2-1 lead for Houston. Stephen Strasburg looked rough all day, and an RBI single from Vern Stephens tied the game in the top of the 4th. By the end of the inning, Strasburg had given up 5 hits and walked 2 and had thrown 84 pitches, leading to some activity in the Colt 45's bullpen. After striking out Reggie Smith to start the 5th, Strasburg walked Wade Boggs and Williams, bringing Dock Ellis into the game with runners on 1st and 2nd. Mookie Betts greeted Ellis with a shot to right field, scoring Boggs and sending Williams to third on the RBI double. But Ellis got a popout from Bill White and fanned Jim Pagliaroni ending the inning with the Red Sox up, 3-2. Ellis may have punched his ticket back to AAA with another ineffectual outing, allowing 4 hits in 1 inning and seeing the Red Sox lead increase to 5-2. Meanwhile, Wakefield was solid, but allowed Houston a 3rd run in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI single from Jorge Posada. Wakefield's final line was 7 innings pitched, 6 hits, and 3 earned runs: a decent enough start from the knuckleballer. He was relieved by Len Barker, with much of the Memphis bullpen fatigued. It didn't go well: George Brett singled and Carlos Correa took Barker deep to tie the game at 5. Barker got an out, but after back-to-back walks to Jim O'Rourke and Wynn, Memphis turned to Heath Bell. Making his WBL debut, Carney Lansford hit a hard ground ball to 3B that was misplayed by Boggs for an error, loading the bases with one out. Craig Biggio singled in 2 runs, putting Houston up 7-5 as we moved to the top of the 9th. Boggs atoned, leading off the inning with a solo homerun against Houston's new closer, Billy Wagner. But Wagner recovered, and even after an error by Correa put the tying run on second, he was able to fan Pagliaroni to end the ballgame. The win went to Houston's old closer, Brad Lidge, who threw a scoreless frame in relief of Trevor Hoffman. MEM 6 (Barker 0-1, 1 BSv) @ HOU 7 (Lidge 1-3; Wagner 2 Sv) HRs: MEM - Williams (11), Boggs (1); HOU - Johnson (5), Correa (3) Box Score #Game Three: Roger Clemens @ Bret Saberhagen Jimmy Wynn led off the bottom of the first with a homerun to give Houston a 1-0 lead. It went downhill from there, as Wynn committed two errors in centerfield that helped Memphis get out to a big lead. Fred Lynn started it with the first homerun of his career, a 2-run shot in the top of the second. They added 3 more in the 3rd, the first on Wynn's first error, the other 2 on a single from Claude Ritchey. Then, in the top of the 5th, another run scored on Wynn's second miscue, and and a single from Ivan DeJesus plated 2 more, extending the lead to 7-1. Clemens gave up 2 more runs in the bottom of the 5th on a triple from HR Johnson and a single from George Brett. An RBI single from Jeff Bagwell made it 7-4 in the bottom of the 7th, and Carlos Correa took Turk Farrell deep in the bottom of the 8th to close it to a one run game, 8-7. Memphis would add two more in the top of the 9th, helped by another Houston error, this one by Craig Biggio at C. Lynn sacrificed one run home, and Manny Ramirez plated the other with a pinch-hit single. With 2 outs and 2 on in the bottom of the 9th, Biggio had a chance to redeem himself against Memphis' closer, Joe Beggs. He couldn't: Beggs induced a groundball to shortstop to end the game. Bagwell had 4 hits for Houston while Lynn and Ritchey combined for 5 RBIs for Memphis. Clemens finally got his first victory of the year, and Beggs' work was good for his 8th save while Bret Saberhagen took the loss, although he was let down more by his defense than his arm. MEM 9 (Clemens 1-4; Papelbon 4 H; Beggs 8 Sv) @ HOU 6 (Saberhagen 3-4) HRs: MEM - Lynn (1); HOU - Correa (4); Wynn (6) Box Score #Game Four: Jon Lester @ Roy Oswalt Reggie Smith led off the game with his 7th homerun of the year, taking Roy Oswalt deep down the right field line for an early 1-0 lead for Memphis. Jim Pagliaroni doubled the lead with homerun in the 2nd. That was all for the Red Sox through 5 innings, but Jon Lester was out-pitching Oswalt, allowing no runs and only 2 hits. The Cole 45's got on the scoreboard in the 6th, as HR Johnson walked, stole second, took third on a throwing error by Pagliaroni, and scored on an single by Lance Berkman. Pagliaroni went deep for his 2nd homerun of the game in the top of the 7th with a 2-run shot to extend the Red Sox lead to 4-1. In the 8th, Ted Williams and Bill White went back-to-back against Trevor Hoffman, extending the lead to 7-1. Given the state of the Red Sox bullpen, those runs were important, as it allowed Memphis to leave Lester in, with only Len Barker warming up in the bullpen. Both teams scored again, and Barker was pulled into action ... but it didn't really matter. Williams and Smith had 3 hits each for Memphis, and Pagliaroni drove in 3 runs. Tony Gwynn had 3 hits for Houston as his average edges towards .300, sitting at .292. MEM 8 (Lester 6-3) @ HOU (Oswalt 5-3) HRs: MEM - Smith (7), Pagliaroni 2 (4), White (7), Williams (12) Box Score Series Summary The series ended an even split, which is a better result for Memphis than for Houston. Jeff Bagwell went 6-for-16 and Tony Gwynn 8-for-12 for Houston. Reggie Smith, Jim Pagliaroni, and Eddie Rosario had 5 hits each for Memphis (with Smith and Pagliaroni each hitting 2 homeruns), and Ted Williams went 7-for-17 with 2 homeruns, bringing his average back over .300 for the season.

Series XIII Featured Game: New York Black Yankees @ Detroit Wolverines
The final game between the New York Black Yankees and the Detroit Wolverines saw Justin Verlander make his 7th start of the year for the home team, while Dave Righetti would start for the visiting Black Yankees.
Verlander had been incredibly effective as a reliever to start the year, but less so as a starting pitcher, making this an important game for him as Detroit tries to sort out its pitching staff. Hank Greenberg took Righetti deep in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead for the home team, but it was short-lived, as Thurman Munson continued his argument as the best catcher in the league with a homerun to lead off the 3rd off Verlander. Two outs later, Derek Jeter went deep as well, pushing New York out to a 2-1 lead. But the Wolverines are a decent team, and they fought back with an RBI single from Chili Davis in the bottom of the 4th that left 2 on and 2 out. However, Righetti retired Geoff Jenkins on a flyball to right to end the threat. The same New York duo struck in the 5th when Jeter singled home Munson to edge the Black Yankees back in front, 3-2. That lasted until Righetti--who was perhaps left in a few batters too long--gave up a 3 run home run to Bill Carrigan, scoring Greenberg and Ty Cobb and moving Detroit into the lead, 5-3. A solo homerun by Lou Gehrig made it 5-4, with the Wolverines trying to hold on for the victory. In the top of the 9th, Detroit had its closer--Mike Henneman--on the mound, and made three defensive substitutions, including putting Greg Brock at 1B in place of Greenberg. Remember that. Henneman gave up a single to Albert Belle, who was replaced at first by Eric Davis. Davis promptly stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored, after a walk to Munson, on a single by Mike Schmidt. That tied the game, and when Jeter again brought Munson home with a single, the Black Yankees moved in front. With usual closer Sparky Lyle a bit tired, New York turned to Goose Gossage to face a Detroit lineup weakened by their defensive substitutions. The first of them, Sparky Adams, led off with a walk, and was bunted to second by Jimmy Collins. Cobb singled him to third, bringing up Brock ... who promptly whiffed, making the Wolverine faithful question the choice to replace Greenberg. But, with 2 outs, Oscar Gamble took Gossage's second pitch deep into the night for a walkoff, 3-run homerun giving Detroit the 8-6 win. This marked the second consecutive game both Greenberg and Gamble went deep for the Wolverines. It was one of those odd nights for relievers, as Henneman picked up both a blown save and a victory, and Gossage a blown save and a loss. NYA 6 (Gossage 3-2, 4 BSv) @ DET 8 (Henneman 1-2, 2 BSv) HRs: NYA - Jeter (4), Munson (6), Gehrig (12); DET - Gamble (13), Carrigan (3), Greenberg (14) Box Score Other Games of Note The third game between New York and Detroit--the one preceeding the above--was memorable for its shenanigans, as Whitey Wilshire plunked Albert Belle, resulting in a bases-clearing brawl. Belle was suspended for 4 games; Wilshire for 6. Additionally, New York's David Robertson was injured while pitching, leading to the recall of OF Sam Thompson from AAA. The game itself was never really in doubt as New York led wire-to-wire in an 8-4 victory. NYA 8 (Ruffing 6-1) @ DET 4 (Wilshire 6-3) HRs: NYA - Ruth (19), Mantle (6); DET - Greenberg (13), Gamble (12) Box Score Indianapolis outhit the New York Gothams 16 to 9, and scored 4 runs in the final 2 innings ... but it was all for naught, as the Gothams rode an early 8-1 lead to an 8-6 victory. Jimmy Sheckard had 3 hits, 3 runs, and 3 RBIs for the Gothams. Edd Roush had 4 hits for the ABCs, raising his average to .352 on the season. NYG 8 (Perry 2-4; Norris 1 Sv) @ IND 6 (Luque 3-5) HRs: NYG - Sheckard (5), Mays (7) Box Score Sandy Koufax, who had impressed mightily from the bullpen, took the mound for Brooklyn for his first start of the season against Homestead. It didn't go great, as Koufax gave up 5 runs in 5 innings before giving way to Dick Redding. Redding and Dave Von Ohlen combined for 5 innings of 2-hit relief. Brooklyn needed all of that, as the Grays had a 5-1 lead after 5 innings behind 2 homeruns from Davey Johnson. But the Royal Giants came back to tie the game, and Mike Piazza--he of the sub .200 average--won it in the bottom of the 10th with a solo shot against Homestead's closer, Josh Lindblom. HOM 5 (Lindblom 0-2; Jackson 4 H; Tekulve 1 BSv) @ BRK 6 (Von Ohlen 3-0) HRs: HOM - Johnson 2 (6), Epstein (9); BRK - Cey (9), Robinson (6), Piazza (4) Box Score

TWIWBL 16.0: Series XIII Notes
May 26
There were no series sweeps in Series XIII, and half the matchups resulted in 2 game splits, leading most of the divisions to drawing closer together. The best teams in the WBL continue to surprise, with only two teams playing over .600 ball: the Baltimore Black Sox lead the way at 35-19 and the Portland Sea Dogs are at 34-20. Baltimore leads the Cumberland Posey Division by 6 games; Portland is atop the Marvin Miller Division by 5.5. The other two divisions are much closer, with the Los Angeles Angels, New York Gothams, and Detroit Wolverines all within 1 game in the Bill James Division (the Angels lead the way at 29-25) and the New York Black Yankees ahead of the Philadelphia Stars by 3 in the Effa Manley Division. Only 1 team--the Miami Cuban Giants--is playing under .400 ball, with Florida's team managing only 21 wins so far on the season. After a few weeks of trying, the WBL has its first two 7 game winners, with Los Angeles' Gerrit Cole and Baltimore's Dennis Martinez both reaching that mark. Martinez has probably surpassed Walter Johnson as the best pitcher in the league right now, and the Black Yankees' Ron Guidry is the only starter ranking 1st or 2nd in four major statistical categories. Two closers, Aroldis Chapman of Miami and Joe Beggs of the Memphis Red Sox, have yet to give up a run in roughly 13 innings each. Reggie Jackson's run at the triple crown continues: he leads the league in BA and OBP and is fifth in SLG. Jackson's performance may be the most surprising, but catcher Louis Santop leading the league in triples has to be close, as is the continued excellence from Curt Blefary. All that said, the Black Yankees' Babe Ruth continues to be the most valuable offensive player in the league, followed closely by the centerfielder for the cross-town Gothams, Willie Mays. Performances { Well, cr@p. The tool I use to convert from wordpress to BBCode couldn't handle the table I created for this section. I'll go back to text based lists next series; in the meantime, if you want to see who's the best in the league, you'll have to go here. } Streaks The Homestead Gray's Roberto Clemente has hit in 14 straight games, Baltimore's Dan McGann has scored in 9 straight, and Detroit's Oscar Gamble as hit a homerun in his last 3 games. While there aren't many hitting streaks of note, the Black Yankees' Thurman Munson has reached base in 26 straight games, the Ottawa Mounties' Terry Puhl in 23, and the Gothams' Jimmy Sheckard in 22. Baltimore's Ned Garvin hasn't allowed a run in 15 innings, and his teammate Dennis Martinez has had 5 consecutive quality starts, as has the Kansas City Monarchs' Andy Pettite. The Brooklyn Royal Giants' Raul Mondesi was an early season surprise, but the bloom is off the rose: he's struggling at 115/164/135 over his last 14 games. Baltimore's Brooks Robinson--122/170/134 over 35 games--is easily the coldest hitter in the WBL, to the point he's no longer in the WBL, having been optioned to AAA. Series XIII Results Taking 3 out of 4 in Series XIII Baltimore over Cleveland Spiders Brooklyn over Homestead New York Gothams over Indianapolis ABCs Los Angeles over Miami Portland over Wandering House of David Splitting Series XIII 2-2 Chicago @ Birmingham New York Black Yankees @ Detroit Kansas City @ Ottawa Memphis @ Houston San Francisco @ Philadelphia

TWIWBL 16.1: Series XIII Notes – Bill James Division
#Detroit Wolverines
Each player in Detroit's starting lineup had 1 hit, with the biggest being a 2-run single by Oscar Gamble leading the Wolverines to a 4-2 win over the Black Yankees. Johnny Marcum moved to 5-1 with 7.2 strong innings, and Mike Henneman earned his 10th save of the season. Mickey Lolich was sent to AAA to make room for Si Johnson's return from his rehab assignment. Johnson's return pushes Justin Verlander back to the bullpen. #Los Angeles Angels The less said about the 18-3 loss to Miami, the better. Aaron Heilman hit the DL after the game, and Doc Gooden's 6th loss of the year--4 innings, 6 walks, 6 hits, 8 runs--sent him to AAA to see if he can work out his great promise. Sid Fernandez and Francisco Rodriguez were recalled from AAA Las Vegas. AT LAST! After many attempts, Gerrit Cole became the WBL's first 7 game winner, improving to 7-3 with 7 strong innings in an 8-3 victory for the Angels over Miami. Mike Trout led the way with 4 hits and Don Buford and Bobby Grich added 3 each. Brett Anderson threw a 4-hitter, blanking Miami 5-0 in a complete game effort. Derrek Lee and Grich each went deep and had 2 hits for Los Angeles. #New York Gothams Al Mays will miss a couple weeks after straining his wrist in a 7-1 loss to Indianapolis. Pete Donohue was recalled from AAA to take Mays's place. The Gothams' other Mays--Willie Mays--showed a flash of what the future might hold as the 23 year old hit 2 homeruns, drove in 4, and threw the tying run out at the plate to end the game as New York beat Indianapolis, 5-4. Juan Marichal improved to 6-1 and Brian Wilson, despite giving up 3 hits and a run, was bailed out by Mays' throw to gain his 6th save. John Kerins has been tearing up AAA on his rehab assignment, leading the Gothams to send down Joe Adcock, returning Kerins to the big league club as a 1B, and given them 3 catchers on the roster. Carson Smith was also recalled from a rehab assignment, with Carl Hubbell's recent injury landing him right back on the DL. #Wandering House of David Elrod Hendricks had 2 homeruns and he and Ernie Banks had 3 hits each to back a masterful performance from Jack Taylor, who spun a 2 hit shutout against Portland to improve his record to 3-5. Taylor walked 2 and struck out 6, lowering his ERA to 3.88.

TWIWBL 16.2: Series XIII Notes – Cum Posey Division
#Baltimore Black Sox
Ned Garvin blanked the Cleveland Spiders on 4 hits as Baltimore rolled to an 8-0 win behind 3 hits from Bobby Wallace and Ramon Hernandez' first homerun of the year. Garvin walked none and struck out 3, improving his record to 5-1 and lowering his ERA to 2.09. Despite a subpar outing, Dennis Martinez joined the list of 7 game winners, moving to 7-1 as the Black Sox came from behind to blow out Cleveland, 10-4. Ken Singleton went 5-for-5, Dan McGann added 3 hits, and Paul Blair--yes, Paul Blair--added 2 homeruns as every Baltimore starter got at least 1 hit. The Black Sox just find a way to win ... down 4-0 after 6, and 5-4 heading into the 9th, Larry Gardner sent the fans home happy with a 2-run walkoff single. Curt Blefary hit 2 homeruns to give him 16 on the year. The win went to Buddy Groom, his first of the year. #Chicago American Giants Behind a strong start from Ben Sheets and 3 homeruns from Duffy Lewis, Chicago took apart Birmingham, 12-3. Allowing only 1 run on 3 hits over 7 innings, Sheets improved his record to 5-3. Lewis drove in 4 and Eddie Collins went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Ed Walsh lasted 8 pitches before having to leave the game with an apparent hamstring injury. The American Giants recalled Fernando Rodney from AAA to take Walsh's place, and his starts should go to Joe Horlen or Frank Smith. #Houston Colt 45's Trevor Hoffman's return from the DL moved Bones Ely back to AAA. #Kansas City Monarchs Robinson Cano hit 2 homeruns and drove in 4, leading the Monarchs to a 7-3 victory over Ottawa. Andy Pettite got his 4th victory of the year with 7 scoreless innings and Craig Kimbrel picked up his 8th hold. Ted Simmons also had 2 hits in a game that was a pitcher's duel until the Monarchs exploded for 4 runs in the top of the 7th. Willie McGee hit 2 homeruns and Frank Castillo allowed only 1 hit before running out of steam in the 8th inning as the Monarchs won the second game of the series, 9-2. McGee drove in 4, and Albert Pujols went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs as Castillo moved to 3-4 on the year. #Ottawa Mounties The news was not good on Bob Brown: the Mountie's best starter all season will miss 4-5 months with a shoulder injury. Clayton Richard, 6-1 with a 3.65 at AAA Montreal, was recalled. Ted Bowsfield threw 1 pitch in the 9-2 loss to Kansas City before having to leave the game. He was placed on the DL with the Mounties recalling Clark Griffith. Ottawa's 4-1 victory over the Monarchs to close out their series was costly, as Tom Henke had to leave with an apparent arm injury. A strong start from Old Hoss Radbourn improved his record to 4-3 and Johnny Podgajny made his WBL debut to relieve Henke and pickup the save. Tim Raines had 2 hits and Anthony Rendon 2 RBIs for the Mounties.

TWIWBL 16.3: Series XII Notes – Effa Manley Division
#Homestead Grays
Earl Hamilton had to be pulled from his first start of the year with a tight back, and was placed on the DL after the game. Chief Wilson--who had 15 homeruns in 36 games at AAA--was recalled to add some punch to the Grays' bench. Corey Kluber was sent to AAA when he came off the DL, where he will be joined by Francisco Liriano, who will be on a rehab assignment. #Indianapolis ABC's Davey Concepcion went 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and Doc White got his first victory of the year, allowing only 1 hit in nearly 5 innings of relief after a rain delay as the ABC's beat the New York Gothams 8-1. #Philadelphia Stars Pete Alexander will miss over a month with a shoulder injury, prompting the Stars to move Jaret Wright into the starting rotation and bring Larry Jackson up from AAA.
