Analysis

This is the Battle of the Best as far as the CBO is concerned. No, this is not the final series, but it does offer the heavyweights of the CBO in the bid to win it all. The winner of this series will be a heavy favorite in the Sole Survivor Series, so this is sure to be a brutal affair.

Goodneighbor trailed Oberland for most of the season, but they finished the regular season with 11 straight wins to pull ahead of the T-51s by two games. While the T-51s have the league's best pitching staff, the Hancocks sport the league's best offense, leading the South Charles Association in most offensive categories and finishing in the top half of every category. Don't let the offensive finesse fool you. The Hancocks were also a good pitching team, outscoring their opponents by 261 runs in the 108-game season. For reference, Oberland was second in that category with a 165-run difference.

On offense, leadoff hitter Good Don Duck had a steady series in the five-game series against Diamond City. He finished the series 9 for 23 (.391) with a home run and three RBI. John Rose (7 for 21), Jumper Hayes (6 for 22), and Bryan Assman (5 for 17) all averaged at least a hit a game despite the Hancocks offense not coming close to its season average in runs against the Swatters. They will all need to do much more against the T-51s.

Quincy Eloquent not only started two games, but he also came on in relief in Game 5 against the Swatters to earn the victory in the 12-inning, 4-3 victory. For the series he was 2-1 with a 5.56 ERA. Bruce Iddings got starts in Games 2 and 5, going 0-1 with a 5.54 ERA. John Oldsink won Game 3, but he had a 6.43 ERA in 7.0 innings. In short, the Hancocks were not hot on the mound in the League Semifinals, but they will have to be steady in the League Championship Series to come out on top for three wins.

The defending champions, Oberland won the 2297 championship with great pitching throughout the playoffs. That steadiness and extreme success continued in 2298, allowing a CBO-low 418 runs. While the pitching has been great, they were not as dominant in the Legue Semifinal Series versus Warwick. Goodneighbor's offense is a lot tougher to shut down, so the T-51s will have to find their 2297 dominance to win this series.

The T-51s were led in the League Semifinal by leadoff hitter B.J. Perez. He was an impressive 8 for 19 (.421) with two RBI. Like the Hancocks, Oberland had guys contribute but not dominate in batting in Jonathan Abern (6 for 16), Curtis Slingshot (5 for 15), Pro Castillo (5 for 17), and Jeremy Bugs (5 for 20).

If I told you Sheng Kawolski pitched two games in the postseason but has no wins to show for it, you would be shocked. In two starts, Kawolski was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 12.0 innings. The T-51s were able to win Game 4, though, with a 3-2 extra-inning win. Matt Udder (1-0, 5.14) and Gerald Jerry (1-0, 5.14) both won, but neither were outstanding in their starts in Games 2 and 3, respectively. They did have much more success from the bullpen with four pitchers combining for seven scoreless innings and Aaron Still giving up two runs in four innings but getting the Game 4 win.

Prediction

Oberland is the defending champions for a reason and finds a way to pull this one out, 3 games to 2.

16 September 2298 - Somerville Place's Hellhole Seriously Injured

Somerville Place Sentry Bots (Egret) reliever Zachary Hellhole was seriously injured today in a ghoul attack.

A roaming pack of ghouls came into the vicinity of Quincy where Hellhole was visiting, catching several people in the attack. Two unnamed people were killed. Hellhole has his pitching arm torn off by a glowing one, meaning his baseball career is over.

Quincy security officials said that they were surprised by the approaching pack that somehow happened upon the area without being detected. An unnamed source said that Quincy happened to be shorthanded on its security detail due to a stomach bug affecting several of the Minutemen patrols.

Hellhole was signed as a free agent in January of this year. He pitched in only one game for the Sentry Bots, throwing one inning and allowing a hit.

16 September 2298 - League Championships in Double Header Today

Both League Championship Series games will be played today in one of the two possible double-header days.

At 4:05 PM, the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud will play at the Easy Town Assaultrons in Game 2 of the North Charles Association's League Championship. Mike Cartrette will take the mound for the Shroud, while Smoker Caliman will pitch for the Assaultrons.

Game 1 of the South Charles Association will start at 8:05 PM when the Oberland T-51s' Sheng Kawolski takes the mound against the Goodneighbor Hancocks' John Oldsink. That game will be on BosCom TV in the primetime slot.

19 September 2298 - McDuff Vows Revenge on SCA

Quincy pitcher Manny McDuff was not happy with the way his 2298 season ended. While the Gunners were in the running for a wildcard spot in the Minutemen League near the end of the season, Quincy faded down the stretch to allow Warwick to claim the spot by five games. In 2297, the Gunners were the Minutemen League wildcard team and the #5 seed in the playoffs. They swept the #4 seed The Slog Ghouls in the first round, but fell to the #6-seed Nordhagen Beach Party Boys in the semifinals in three games.

"If I am going to be a team leader," McDuff said, "then I have to take responsibility for my own failings, own them, and get better."

In 28 appearances with 27 starts in 2298, McDuff went 10-10 with a 4.07 ERA. It was his best season so far in terms of ERA. He also struck out 128 batters in 174.2 innings.

"I want to win, I want my teammates to win. Therefore, I am not taking a rest at all. Every day I am going to work on winning and pitching better. We're back in 2299."

The 30-year-old was drafted by the Gunners in the fifth round of the 2296 Inaugural Draft. In his career, McDuff is 25-26 with a 4.70 ERA in 68 games with 66 starts. He is 1-1 in the postseason with a 9.31 ERA in two starts.

19 September 2298 - A New Home Means a New Hope?

The Atom Cats were a surprise addition to the 2296 playoffs, avoiding an end-of-the-season meltdown to win a play-in game and then upset #1-seed Oberland in the Quarterfinals.

That surprise turned on its head in 2297 and 2298 finished 5th and now 6th in the Minutemen League, thanks in part to their "Ace in the Hole," ace Matt "Ace in the Hole" Hope.

Now rumors are flying that the Cats are looking to deal that 30-year-old Big Daddy for some young ankle-biter prospects. In three seasons as the Cats' ace, Hope has a career mark of 22-30 with a 6.20 ERA. For the 2298 season, he pitched in 30 games and started 28, going 7-15 with a 5.18 ERA. His 2296 postseason was successful, going 3-0 in four starts with a 3.03 ERA.

"Rumors are just rumors, baby," Cats GM Rich "Size Man" Szymanowski said. "Don't let those dirty dogs kick mud on your toes, you know. They're just blowing hot air through a muffler."

Despite Szmanowski's denials, there has been confirmed interest in some top teams considering what they can offer the Cats in exchange for Hope, hoping he can become a new hope for their pitching staff.

Among teams looking to deal for Hope, some 2298 playoff teams are in that number, including Abernathy and Warwick. Other potential trade mates could include The Slog, Concord, Starlight, and FHE.

19 September 2298 - Playoff Doubleheader #2

For the last time this season, CBO fans have more than one game to pay attention to when both the North Charles Association and South Charles Association League Championships take place.

At 4:05 PM, the #3-seed Easy Town Assaultrons have a chance to clinch a spot in the Sole Survivor Series when they visit the #4-seed Fort Hagen Silver Shroud. Angel Waterdrink (3-0, 2.74) takes the mound for the Assaultrons, while Brent Hooker (1-1, 4.50) gets the nod for the Shroud. If Fort Hagen finds a way to win, Game 5 will take place on Wednesday in Easy Town.

The feature game is the Battle for the South when the #1-seed Goodneighbor Hancocks go for the sweep over the defending champions, #2-seed Oberland. That game takes place at 8:06 PM with the Hancocks' Bruce Iddings (0-1. 5.54) matching against the T-51s' Gerald Jerry (1-0, 5.14). Should the T-51s take this game, the two teams will play again tomorrow night in Graygarden.

The McDuff story is a result of distracted writing where I forgot the part about him vying revenge on the rest of the association in his quotes! However, in this land, darker is always possible!

Shroud can be proud of themselves, but it always hurts to get so close yet be so far away from the championship. Easy Town could beat Goodneighbor or Oberland in the Sole Survivor Series, but either the Trons or Shroud are likely to fall there. This championship seems the two best teams' one to take.

21 September 2298 - League Championship Banners Revealed

Four teams have new banners to proudly display in their respective stadiums. The Brotherhood League champion Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, the Institute League Abernathy Adamantium, the Minutemen League Goodneighbor Hancocks, and the Railroad League Oberland T-51s will all display their banners in their stadiums for the 2299 season.

Goodneighbor and Oberland have vowed to reveal the banner at their stadium this season should they make the Sole Survivor Series.

The Party Boys are displaying their first league title banner, Abernathy and the Hancocks their second, and Oberland their third.
