Um, no. It's Ortiz on the Ortiz rookie card. I admit I'm not very good at this game, but the image of Ortiz doesn't look remotely like any of the Pena images to me. The eyes, the eyebrows, the ears, the mouth, the cheekbone structure are all different. The nose is similar and that's about it.

The reason I felt that way was because his jersey and undershirt were identical, right down to the words bleeding through the mesh top. I attributed a lot of the facial differences to smiling/not smiling. I admit I am not getting any better at this facial recognition trick.

Francisco Rosario

I'll try to get a start on the 5 latest requested photo identifications by Rico. I think that Player # 1 is a young Francisco Rosario. Player #1 is a right-handed pitcher, and he had to have been in the Toronto Blue Jays' spring camp in 2001, 2002, or 2003, given the uniform he is wearing ( if I have my uniforms straight). Francisco Rosario was on the Blue Jays' spring roster in 2003. The primary photo of Rosario which I used for comparison purposes may be seen at the following link:

Blue Jays Media Day | Getty Images

It seems to me that the left ear is a perfect match, right down to the "Y" shaped fork in the inner ear near the top.

"Fleer Vault" photos ID'd

By pure luck, came across the Rated Rookies subset of a rather obscure, limited to 1,500 cards each set, called 2003 Fleer Patchworks.

The other cards include:

Josh Willingham (Marlins)

Matt Bruback (Cubs)

Rich Fischer (Angels)

Settling old(er) business, Prentice was also in that 2003 Fleer limited edition set. One hundred percent confirmed, and thanks.

Steve Selsky

Steve Selsky was a first baseman who appeared on the White Sox spring roster in 1962. This photo of him was for sale on eBay in 2013 by a vendor named soxphotos.

Yesterday, another player named Steve Selsky made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds. I think this may be the older Steve Selsky's son, but my ability to establish the link is a bit tenuous.

An article which mentions the younger Selsky's playing in the Cape Cod League says that his father played in the major leagues. See Cape Cod Baseball League, the Amateur's Big League | By Skip Rozin - WSJ

Other articles about the Cape Cod League Steve Selsky make clear that he attended the U. of Arizona, so he's definitely the fellow who made his major league debut yesterday.

One more piece of evidence. The father of the new major leaguer is definitely named Steve. An article in the Cincinnati paper mentioned the dad taking his wife to Hawaii as a birthday present. But again, we don't have the direct citation that the father was a minor leaguer.

There have been no previous major leaguers named Selsky, and the older Steve Selsky is the only other pro baseball playing Selsky listed in baseball-reference. Sometimes being placed on a major league roster is conflated with being a major leaguer.

If the older Steve was our new major leaguer's dad, that means that he would have been 43 years old when his son was born. That's not out of the question, but certainly unusual.

Eureka! The proof that they are father and son:

Anybody got a picture of catcher Marty Cott, first round draft pick of the Astros in 1968 (drafted ahead of Thurman Munson)? Odds are good the Vault got him in 1970, when he was on the 40-man, but I haven't seen anything from them yet.

Also looking for Bobby Lazarewicz, short time southpaw in the Tigers system in the early 60s.

You'll find a photo of Marty Cott on page 96 of the Arcadia book WILLIAMSPORT'S BASEBALL HERITAGE. The following link should get you there:

Marty was on the Houston Astros' spring roster in 1970.

Frank "Dutch" Van Burkleo

Here's another father of a major leaguer. This is Ty Van Burkleo's dad.

Frank Van Burkleo was a noted athlete out of Southern California who signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates for a $40,000 bonus in the early 1950's. That was an enormous sum in those days. Frank was a non-roster invitee with the Pirates in 1952.

The photo is from the Pittsburgh Press of February 24, 1952. The other half of the photo shows George Sisler, who is giving him batting tips. The Pirates converted Dutch to a first baseman, which is the position he spent playing his minor league career.

Mike Marble --

All this required was a Google search:

Desert Sun 19 May 1966 ? California Digital Newspaper Collection

Ron Kotick --

A Google search would also have revealed that a photo of Kotick has already been posted in this forum at:

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...pack-1248.html

Phil Zahn is shown below from a 1965 issue of the Arizona Republic in his University of Arizona uniform.

I could not find baseball-reference.com entries for Frank York or Mike Seufer, so am not sure they were minor league players.

Frank York was in 1969 Newark Co-Pilots camp-that is all I know. Mike Seufer was a 1970 Draft Pick and was in camp for Newark co-pilots but did not make the team
