Game 1 Matchups

Analysis

Here we go, ladies, gentlemen, ghouls, and synths! The third-ever Sole Survivor Series is here! This year's matchup is the #1 team from the South Charles Association, the Goodneighbor Hancocks, taking on the #4 seed from the North Charles Association, the Easy Town Assaultrons, in a best-of-seven battle. This is a matchup of the Harbor as Easy Town is just a boat ride away from getting to South Boston where the Hancocks play their home ball. This week, however, the Assaultrons were in Diamond City and started traveling to South Boston at the conclusion of the Hancocks' 12-6 victory over the Oberland T-51s in Game 5 of the SCA League Championship.

This matchup makes sense since both teams finished among the hotter in the league at the end of the season. The Assaultrons were 17-8 in the August-September regular season's last month, while the Hancocks were 21-4 in that stretch, including an 11-game winning streak to end the season. Both records represented the best in their associations in the time when games counted the most.

Goodneighbor had the CBO's best record for a reason: they are fierce in all three facets of the game. In fact in all of the offensive and defensive categories, the Hancocks finished out of the top half in only two: Bullpen ERA (9th at 4.81) and Strikeouts (T-9th at 767). Now, that bullpen ERA may be disturbing for them; if the Assaultrons can knock out Goodneighbors' starters, then they have a much better chance than being held down. Still, the Hancocks were only behind Oberland in runs allowed (435), Starters ERA (3.59), and Team ERA (3.79). Ace Quincy Eloquent may have had a bad Game 5 versus the T-51s, but he was stout all season at 19-6 with a 2.77 ERA and may be the favorite to win the Pitcher of the Year Award. Bruce Iddings (17-4, 3.41) and John Oldsink (16-5, 4.09) are just too good for most teams' lineups in a three-game period. The dual-closers in Bus Paula (0-3, 3.43, 16 SV) and Bryan Punchine (4-2, 1.86, 16 SV) can keep teams honest in the late game, and usual starter Steve Rocky (12-8, 4.30) can provide some bullpen help if a starter gets chased early or gets injured.

Easy Town counters with pitching that finished in the bottom half of almost every category in the North Charles Association in pitching. That may be a problem, though they have played above their heads in the 2298 playoffs and have been better overall since the start of August. Angel Waterdrink (13-11, 4.59) is the ace, while Smoker Caliman (15-4, 4.59) and David Tech (9-10, 4.75) follow him in the rotation. Closer Aaron Geneva has been one of the best on the year, going 2-1 with a 1.96 and a CBO-best 37 saves. Marc Woodsman (6-2, 2.76) is their other good reliever.

The offense for the Hancocks were second to none and provide the real damage in the series as was seen in Game 5 versus a good-pitching Oberland team. Good Don Duck has now earned Series MVP twice in a row because he is a tough out with some pop on his bat. In just 10 games in the 2298 playoffs, Duck is 16 of 42 (.381) with a double, three home runs, four walks, nine runs, and seven RBI. Pitchers ready to sleep on the Hancocks after Duck bats? Welcome to CF John Rose (.321/18/88 regular season), 1B Bryan Assman (.376/35/102), 2B Jumper Hayes (.360/12/85), LF Zachary Utsinger (.354/12/88), SS Burtie Cuttooth (.301/19/91), and 3B Jason Juras (.245/15/46). Relax a little against eighth hitter Splotch Pollock and the Goodneighbor pitcher.

The Assaultrons are much better when it comes to offense, though they still trail the Hancocks in that category. Easy Town finished second in runs scored in the NCA (599) and hit and ran well to lead in batting average (.299) and stolen bases (83). Part of the reason why the batting average was so high comes from fifth-hitter, LF Jarrett Metalbox (.408/17/89) who won the NCA League Championship Series MVP. Add to that League Semifinals MVP, cleanup hitter RF Dan Squirrel (.372/24/99) and the Assaultrons have a dangerous 1-2 punch in the middle of their lineup. CF Sean Samuels (.348/12/65) and leadoff 1B Joe Ransom (.271/22/67) provide pop in Easy Town's nonstandard lineup. There are definitely weaknesses, including 2B Frank Clawdodger (.278/0/15), but he has been hot in the postseason: 13 for 35 (.371) with a double, a triple, three walks, five runs, six RBI, and a stolen base. The bottom of the lineup is not considered strong, but C Adam Henderson (.246/13/64) and 3B Bobby Carr (.218/15/54) had better numbers than some of their peers.

Fun fact: Easy Town is the third straight Brotherhood League wildcard team to make the Sole Survivor Series. In 2296, The Slog snuck in to beat league rival and BL champion Finch Farm in the SSS. In 2297, the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys advanced to the SSS before falling to Oberland.

Prediction

Goodneighbor appears to be much too strong on paper for Easy Town to have a chance in this series. Our best guess: the Assaultrons find one upset in the mix but eventually fall in five games, 4-1, in the series.

September 2298 - News and Notes - September 24

Today in the CBO

News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

24 September 2298 - Easy City Downs Honors Trons Player

Lucky Lou, co-owner of Easy City Downs in the Easy Town, announced upon the start of the Sole Survivor Series that there would be a name change at the Downs.

The announcer's box at the robot (and sometimes creature) tracks will be renamed to the Metalbox in honor of Easy Town Assaultrons left fielder Jarrett Metalbox who won the batting crown with a .408 average and helped lead the team to the Sole Survivor Series where they will play Goodneighbor.

The Assaultrons can host up to three home games: Tuesday, August 27, through Thursday, August 29. Lucky Lou said that bettors on those dates who visit the Downs can vote on the Easy Town baseball for double payouts.

"We're going to have the biggest crowd the Commonwealth has ever seen," Lucky Lou said. "We have the Assaultrons to thank for that, especially Mr. Metalbox. That's why we're naming the announcer's box after him, and he is welcome here anytime, when there's no baseball games to win, of course."

Early lines at the Downs are showing heavy betting in favor of Goodneighbor with nine bets going for the Hancocks to win it all for every two Easy Town bets. The heaviest series length bets include Goodneighbor in 6 games (36%), Goodneighbor in 7 games (26%), and Easy Town in 7 games (11%). The lowest bet rate was for Easy Town to sweep (1%).

The bettors are heavily in Goodneighbor's corner. It looks like Easy Town needs to just stick in there to pull off some upsets, but their pitching staff has to be shaking about facing the Hancocks' lineup. Easy Town has definitely not faced any team like that all season.

No More Thank Yous

I understand wht OOTP has to disable it on the forums: https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...d.php?t=323392

However, I will be sad to see the Thank You feature go. I use it a lot in reading others' posts as an acknowledgment that I have read people's dynasties and replies to my own.

I was wondering about that! I read your latest posts this morning and - like you - used the "thank you" button to show I had read something. But, suddenly, there it was - gone!

Eh, I'm sad to see it go too, but maybe this will increase engagement too, as was said in the thread announcing the change. I post my dynasty in two places, and the other place has a "thanks" feature too, and the people over there are really "bad" about only thanking a post and not leaving feedback, so I know I have readers over there, but actually trying to get any constructive criticism is like blood from a stone

I know I'm guilty on OOTP. When my time is limited for writing and reading, I will just quickly sim others' posts and then hit the Thanks button. I may need to limit the number of threads I click on, especially since I will be very much busier soon.

27 September 2298 - BMU: Commonwealth Association Selects Manager of the Year

Galleria manager Alfredo Barios caused quite a stir when he came to town. Noted for his feisty, no-nonsense attitude, Barios threw his all into the 2298 campaign, winning over critics and fans as he went. He also won a few ballgames, running up a 44-33 record, which was good enough to take the first place spot in the Commonwealth Association Dark Hollow Pond League standings.

"These guys are grown men. They don't need psychobabble, they need to win ballgames," Barios snapped at his first press conference. While his approach was controversial, even for Galleria, it netted the 42-year-old the Commonwealth Association Manager of the Year trophy. In response to which he replied, "It ain't molecular physics, it's baseball," and began discussing potential free agents with the local media.

27 September 2298 - BMU: MA Best Manager, Vetson of the Natick Banks Big Leaguers

Scott Vetson skippered the Natick Banks Big Leaguers to a very successful year and has been acclaimed as the 2298 Massachusetts Association Manager of the Year.

He kept it short and sweet in the press conference as he accepted the award. "Thanks, but it wasn't just me out there this season."

The Big Leaguers finished the regular season in first place in the Massachusetts Association Glowing Sea League with a 48-28 record.

27 September 2298 - Sole Survivor Series Resumes in Easy Town

The Sole Survivor Series picks back up at 8:05 PM today when the Easy Town Assaultrons try to get back on track in Game 3 versus the Goodneighbor Hancocks. Quincy Eloquent (3-1, 5.14 ERA in the postseason) and David Tech (1-1, 3.52) are the scheduled starters today. Fans can watch every moment on BosCom affiliated networks or listen in on Diamond City Radio.

Thinking about this more, Nuke Laloosh is soooooooo perfect for a Fallout world character name. I just added him to the 2299 draft list.

I'll have a word with the front office staff at Nordhagen Beach and see if I can't persuade them to draft for him - he'd be a perfect fit, he's, like, sooo radical!!

28 September 2298 - BMU: MA's Best Hurler is Capps

When the name of R.J. Capps appeared on the Haymarket Mall lineup card in 2298, it was a virtual guarantee of a victory or at least a well-pitched game. For his brilliant performance this season he was named the Massachusetts Association Pitcher of the Year Award winner today.

He started 17 games, running up a 10-3 record and a 2.22 ERA. Capps held opponents to a .202 average while striking out 121, walking 29 and allowing 80 hits in 109.1 innings of work.

28 September 2298 - Sole Survivor Series Could End Today

If the Easy Town Assaultrons cannot find their bats today, they will walk away from their first-ever playoff appearance with a bitter taste of broom needles. That's what is at stake when the Assaultrons host the CBO's best team, the Goodneighbor Hancocks in Game 4 of the series with the Hancocks currently up 3 games to nil. Bruce Iddings (1-2, 7.20 ERA in the postseason) will face off against Angel Waterdrink (4-1, 3.13) where the Assaultrons appear on paper to have a chance to win. Game time is 8:05 PM at Easy Town Field.
