Swansea Pitcher Perfect at South Shields. The exceedingly rare feat of the "perfect" baseball game—in which a pitcher puts out all 27 batsmen he faces in a match—has occurred only thrice in the forty year history of the Baseball League, and Tuesday was that third time. Derek Hirst, the old mainstay of the Swansea baseball club since the 1913 season, turned the trick as he put down the South Shields club by six runs to nil in a hostile Horsley Hill filled with some 6,700 unhappy spectators. There has been great hope that the Tynesiders would contend for promotion this season, but instead they find themselves having lost more games than they have won, and are situated in a draw for the fifteenth place on the table alongside The Wednesday and Accrington Stanley. South Shields still had a fine chance to come back and win the match as it stood at a scoreless draw after the seventh innings, but once the Jacks scored three runs in the top of their eighth innings, Hirst redoubled his efforts to retire the final six Tynesider batsmen without allowing any to reach base. After having started out three balls and no strikes on the first batsman MacLaine, Hirst induced a weak ground ball back to himself for the easy put out. He retired the next two batsmen easily and, benefitting from a doubled cushion of six runs following a fruitful Swansea ninth, put out remaining three frustrated batsman on just five pitches to secure the special victory. It took some sprightly fielding to keep the duck-eggs unbroken but as the impossible loomed nearer the Jacks, the Tynesiders, and all who watched lay under Hirst’s bewitching spell, and the nine maiden innings of his will long be enshrined in the League’s historical roll of individual accomplishment. Afterwards, the South Shields club and their angry, hapless supporters could do nothing afterwards but stare at the same line of noughts that greeted them when they first arrived into the ground for the tie, and leave the ground audibly grumbling about their missed opportunity for comeback and victory. |
